After about 10 minutes it was painfully clear this was a game Wolves should be winning.
Nuno went with something resembling his strongest eleven playing a tried and tested system. Klopp deployed a team of reserves and kids in a kamikaze formation that showed little respect to Premier League opposition.

It was frustrating we didn’t use the ball better in a patchy first half with Liverpool clearly there to be picked off.
Had we deployed the more attack minded front three approach we may have blown them away, given the hodgepodge disjointed display from the league leaders.
But Jimenez eventually scored the goal their high line and our high press had been threatening and from that point things generally improved.
Boly and/or Dendoncker should have got a block on Origi’s well struck equaliser and there was a period of about three minutes when you wondered if the big guns were coming on to conjure up a victory.
Thankfully though, Salah and Firmino were still shuttling up and down the touchline when Neves battered home the winner.
He’s endured some nchd ambien zolpidem difficult moments of late and there were one or two loose passes in this performance, but it’s a timely reminder about the quality our star man has in reserve.
It was the second half of last season that Neves really came into his own, so fingers crossed for a repeat as the team significantly benefits when he’s playing well.
Other than the result and progress in a competition we must have a fighting chance of winning, there were other useful pluses.
[interaction id=”5c3484c9b1837632bf9fe6d0″]Jota looked as sharp and aggressive as he did in his last appearance a month ago, which bodes well for the games to come.
And in goal, John Ruddy was assured for the most part and spectacular in tipping Shaqiri’s goal bound free kick onto the post.
I still feel Patricio is the better keeper but it’s great to have such an experienced and capable performer ready to step up.
He’ll get at least one more outing this season at Shrewsbury or managerless Stoke and that will hopefully be alongside a similarly strong team selection from the head coach.
We can win this thing.

Fantastic result. Hope we can get to the final and lift the cup.
🙂
Felt Morgan Gibbs-White deserved some game time – but be bitterly disappointed !
Enjoyed very much watching the game, albeit from a distance as away with friends. Two of them very keen Liverpool supporters which added to my enjoyment no end.
Thought we controlled the game throughout and never really thought we would lose. At the very least a draw, with a win the likeliest result.
And so it proved. Jiminez his usual effective best and Jota picking up where he left off. Dendoncker looked solid and Neves brought back memories of his last season’s goals. And Ruddy produced a game saving tip onto the post again reminiscent of last season. Great selection by Nuno, forget please my suggestion of bringing in peripheral players and youngsters!
Local rivals in the next round, a winnable game and who knows onwards to Wembley!
1st thing 1st and that was the tribute to Bill Slater. Very touching and honoured beautifully.
Now the match and that starting line up was very impressive and I can see that being deployed more in the league given a couple of personnel changes.
Very happy for big John and it’s great we have 2 top class keepers in our squad. That save was probably the best save of the season and I hope for the sake of John that we can progress to the later stages of this competition.
The back 3 were as strong as ever with Boly being the pick for me. Vinagre is a scary prospect for his young age and he will hopefully mature into a very good player in time.
Neves and Moutinho looked like they really enjoyed last night and it was great to see Neves get his long over waited goal. Dendoncker looks like a good back up to call on and it’s probably not gonna be till next season that we will see the best of him. Raul was phenomenal as always and must be made permanent this summer. Jota is slowly coming into his own and is another player we should build this team around.
Few players for me who should be playing for their futures for the remainder of the season are Cav, Costa,Traore and Saiss. Very good performance against a Liverpool team who rely on their star players but let’s not take anything away from us being very organised and patient. Roll on round 4 and if we can get past that and get a favourable 5th round draw then who knows what could happen this season. Once again well played lads and this season is slowly already living up to the heroics of last season. UTW ?
Well first 30 mins was possibly the worst seen on tv was embarresed.
Was I the only one who thought dendonker was running about like a headless chicken ?
Origi took that goal well and may be an alternative if Abraham falls through.
Strange game as Liverpool unless they got in front looked to accept the defeat.
Lost count of the number of times a wolves forward player made a breaking movement but was not picked up only to make a safe sideways pass.
Neves appeared to suggest he prefers the mitre ball used in the fa Cup to the Nike ball used in the prem hope he does not let it get to him mentally.
Overall a good win and on to a local away tie in the next round.
Absolutely dreadful game to watch for the most part. A top performance from Ruddy again, nice to see balls from the keeper going to one of our own players for a change.
Great write-up mate. Fully agree this is a competition we should try and win. It’ll be difficult given most of the top sides are still in it but we’ve shown this season that we can compete with anyone in a one-off game so why shouldn’t we dream of the final?
Also agree re Liverpool, I thought their approach to the game was shocking and completely unbecoming of the club’s history. Always had time to Klopp prior to last night but his team selection and post-match drivel about the wind left a sour taste in the mouth.
Regardless of what team they put out though, I thought we were excellent last night and fully deserved the win. Great to see Neves back to his swaggering best and Raul seems to get better with every game, I hope we bag him permanently in the summer. Special mention for Vinagre too, who had his best game in a Wolves shirt for my money.
See some of you at Shrewsbury or Stoke hopefully!
The record books from this season will show, probably, that Liverpool won the league, and made good progress in the European Cup.
They will also show that they got knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolverhampton Wanderers, for the second time in two years.
I don’t care if it was a “good” game or not.
Any game is good for me if we win.
What I’m getting at is we knocked out probably the best team in the country.
No amount of bullshit from their manager can hide the facts.
We beat them fair and square, with two excellent goals and a Ruddy good keeper.
Fielding a “weak” team is bollocks.
If you have no respect for the competition and don’t want to win it, why bother entering in the first place?
I posted previously that the players from the Palace match should have been dropped, but wiser heads prevailed, the same team, virtually, played and made amends big time.
So, hands up, I was wrong, and happy to be proved so.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even with no sound, and we most certainly deserved to win.
So all the naysayers, and especially all those arrogant scousers, can go fuck themselves, and cheer for us on Monday when we do what they couldn’t, and win in Manchester.
Good for you, Clive!
As far as I’m concerned it was our game of the season, so far.
Maybe I was watching from a parallel universe, but we took our own time to to figure out their weaknesses, restricted them to two open play shots in the match (one of which ended up in the back of our net) and scored two terrific goals of our own.
I tell ya, an evil grin worked its way across my face when I saw Jota was back in the side, and the way he craftily shepherded Milner away from blocking Jimi for the first goal I’ll never get bored of watching. As for the second; well it’s Ruben, innit.
So ffs, will you lot mithering out there get a grip. Two of their players cost more than our team, so get over yourselves. Poor first arf, my arse. Weaker Liverpool team maybe, but would any of us say ‘no’ to any of their squad….? Course you feckin wouldn’t! So enjoy the win, cos anybody reading this from Mars would believe we’ve been here forever, as opposed to this season being our best for nearly 40 years!
I can see the point about Liverpool being there for the taking early on, but personally I thought Nuno got his tactics spot on and we nullified Liverpool. As the first half wore on, we pressed more and more and rattled Liverpool. We grew into the game, went 1-0 up and never looked back. Some of the football at times was sublime.
Ruben returned to somewhere near his best. The ball danced to his tune and he ran the midfield – ably assisted by Dendoncker (calm, did the simple things well) and Moutinho, who played less as a 10 and more as an orthodox MF.
Not like me to disagree with Thomas but I’m much more of a fan of 3412/352. Playing with that extra man in MF gives us more control and options. It allows the WBs the space and the width they need, while Jota thrives in that second forward role alongside Raul. Often with 343 this season, everyone has been too far apart and the MF overran.
Must say Ruddy picked up from where he left off last season. Marshalled the defence well, distribution good and a brilliant save from Shaqiri’s FK. Back 3 were superb, especially Boly, a Rolls Royce of a performance. Surely, he’s worthy of a France call-up if he continues that form? I thought Jonny was sound defensively on the right without doing anything remarkable in the attack. Arguably, he gave Bennett more protection that Doc does. Vinagre attacked that left flank all night with some success – he dovetailed well with Jota. It was Vinagre’s best defensive performance since joining us.
Finally, thank god we have our Jota back. His direct running scared the living daylights out of Liverpool. Raul and Jota have struck up some partnership. And what about Raul, a masterclass in link up play. Took his goal brilliantly too.
Agree with you Paddy re the extra man in midfield. I am a big fan of Saiss, but Dendonker has done well against Spurs and again last night.
UTW!
Aside from the victories themselves , I always enjoy reading the next day how any team that has just lost to Wolves is now a “club in crisis”.
Liverpool seemingly have an injury crisis so why leave circa ÂŁ150m worth of attaching talent on the bench at kick-off which would have allowed them to defend from the front ?
I watched this in front of the telly with the PMDG’er and a serious case of Man flu.
The first half, for the most part, did nothing to make me feel better. The crowd was spookily quiet again and neither team seemed capable of passing the ball to one of their own players.
Then we got our goal. And I suddenly started to feel less like an aching, mucus filled sponge and more like the super fit and fettled example of manhood that I normally am.
What a wonderful goal!
First, Milner, who wasted more time in the league match against us a few weeks back, than someone going to sandwell to watch football, was caught with his pants down and robbed by Jota whose little flick to the EXCELLENT Jimenez set him off on a 40 yard sprint to goal.
Meanwhile, Jota was blocking the aforementioned Milner so he couldn’t get anywhere near the Mexican Marvel.
Then came the perfect finish from a striker who is just getting better with every game he plays.
And a bit later on, came a goal from the revitalised Neves that topped it!
Like many managers and coaches of ‘Big’ clubs, Klopp got his FA Cup line up horribly wrong. Nuno got his almost spot on and showed respect for a trophy that he knows we could win.
A well deserved victory and good performances from most of the lads.
A special shout out for John Ruddy who pulled off an incredible save.
When I played in goal a couple of years back (shut up Clive), I made a similar sort of save (I said shut up Clive) which the referee gave as a goal kick.
Unlike John Ruddy, I had to let everybody know that I’d got a touch on it and owned up to the ref. Cue congratulations and pats on the back from my defenders.
The other team scored from the resultant corner.
On a brighter note. The result last night made me feel that maybe my Man flu may be nothing more than a cold.
But a VERY bad one of course.
This Man Flu.
Where can I get a case of it, and is it in pint cans or bottles?
Well, its always nice to turn over the scousers but lets keep this in the context that Thomas has outlined. An almost full strength Wolves against a seriously understrength (their choice) Liverpool. The fact that they were able to stay in the game for so long with kids in the team shows us how far we still have to go.
But what of ‘The Prince of Darkness’ ? (‘Donker’ is ‘Dark’ in Dutch/Flemish). Personally I’m now looking at Dendoncker having played in wins v Spurs and Liverpool and thinking these are two of the best results of our season. So why is there talk of him being on the move/unwanted at Molineux ? Rumour had it that he was unfit when he arrrived and indeed he still looks a little heavy, but that doesn’t seem to affect his ability to be influential at this level. I though that last night he was calm in possesssion, picked his moments to press well and gave our midfield that extra solidity that it has lacked in some recent home matches. Be interesting to see if/how his career develops at Molineux.
What’s full strength about a backup goaltender, a backup left wingback and a less than backup midfielder? Plus our right wingback was playing out of position and Moutinho was, too.
Thats why I wrote ‘ALMOST full strength’ Tim…and what’s a ‘goaltender’ ?
Sorry. I guess I am frustrated at everyone else saying it was Liverpool’s “B” team against Wolves best.
I try to point out that many of our players were not the main players at their positions or were playing out of position.
It goes behind a steam train, it was a typo, should have read coal tender.
They played youngsters and we played youngsters. Vinagre is 19 and, although he didn’t play last night, Gibbs-White is 18. If Klopp doesn’t wish to integrate them into the team during actual games, that is his decision. Nuno has been integrating youngsters, somewhat out of necessity, since he got to Wolves.
As I said immediately before the game, one of the most important aspects of last nights game was how Diogo played. Would he be back to where he was before his hamstring injury or back to where he was at the beginning of the season?
And also, how would his interaction with Jimenez be? Would their partnership be good or would that understanding have faded during the time off.
Good to say that he played well and they played well together.
That Milner guy seems to get a lot of yellows against us. How does he not get suspensions all of the time?
We’ve been capitalizing on our chances a lot lately and if we continue to, we will do much better in the second half of the season because that was one of our weak spots in the first half.
Well, we’ve scared Tammy Abrahams off,
The boy’s a fool with limited ambition.
I still prefer players that WANT to play for Wolves.
I wish him luck with Villa.
Tammy Abraham, you are the weakest link, Goodbye.
Actually Stu, I beg to differ. He’s actually a Chelski player and would have come to Wolves, or so I understand, if it was on a permanent deal. To be honest, I do admire his loyalty, which is all too rare in football these days.
I think he’s done the right thing for himself. What’s the point of him warming up our bench when he can be playing every game for Villa? There’s no way he’s going to get in front of Raul or any other other forwards for that matter.
Well, I think he would be the perfect man to play alongside Raul in a 3-5-2 formation, and he would get playing time if not another big gun is brought in during the january window. Origi is another interesting player, but his work rate is not as high as Abrahams.
I think that it’s a lot to do with not being sure about the FIFA rules given that he’s already played for two clubs this season. He’d look a fool if he came and then FIFA said that you can’t play.
The best aspect of last night by far in my view was that Nuno played a full strength team .As any supporter can tell him we are not going to be relegated so why not have a proper go in a Cup .After the next round there will be a maximum of 10 PL teams left in .We can have a proper run in a Cup at long last .I think it is too soon to qualify for the Europa Leage much as it would be terrific to be in it .Nuno will need to accept the need for a bigger squad before we are ready although it would help to keep the predators away from our best players .
I have mixed feeling about Abraham .If he is only on loan and does well Chelsea will probably keep him .If he does not we have gained nothing .Loans are great but the option to buy as with Jiminez is the key .I think we should buy him for the ÂŁ30 million .
When you are dealing with a loan deal, what difference does potential make?
If he is going to be a star in 3 years but the loan is for 6 months or 18 months, then 3 years is irrelevant.
I’m sure there are equally good players in Europe for much less money.
Great win. Got exactly what we deserved for showing respect to the cup. You never know we might win it.
As for little Tammy, his choice, hall of fame & golden glory. or the hall of memory at the vile.
I liked the balance of the team last night, the high press suits our fast break counter attacks and we have real quality in our defensive MF in Neves/Dendoncker and of course Saiss who is much underrated. Our final ball accuracy is the key area for improvement. Tremendous improvements all over the team and the BBC team were very complimentary. I can put up with the occasional blip as we continue to do the right things. No time wasting from our professionals! Must say we look so more potent with Jota and Jimenez working as a pair as have previous successful teams over the years. Doog/JR; Bully/ Mutch. Roll on City, they will provide our sternest test to-date but with belief and IF we can stay in the game City will get anxious and we will capitalise on their defensive frailties.
Not at the game but watched it on TV for a change. Great that Nuno played a strong 11. Dendoncker looked good, & Neves is back, so too Jota whose dispossession of Milner for Jiminez’s goal was great, then blocking him off tremendous. Well pleased after the lows of Palace.
Klopp picked a weakened team & they looked pretty poor to be honest. I thought our pressing was brilliant last night, I also like that lineup & formation, it does look more solid.
Why second string players from arguably the top team in the country should look so ordinary beats me. But maybe it was our game that knocked the stuffing out of them. Onwards to the 4 th round. Come on you Wolves. Be great to enjoy a bit of a decent cup run.
I loved the set up last night Nuno, thanks for not wasting my time and hard earned money. Almost 26000 on a Monday night, with the game on the TV also thank you.
You put out a team that turned up and challenged for the FA Cup no matter which 11 players were on the pitch, to be fair there’s a few of those second string Liverpool players we would buy any day of the week.
I enjoyed all the game, from start to finish, I saw the first 30 minutes two teams sizing eachother up, finding weaknesses and getting used to the team changes, (albeit we only had 5 changes to Liverpools 9, but changes they were).
I don’t care too much about how quiet Wolves fans were, they respond to what they see on the pitch, not the other way round, once we scored, the very vocal Kop were silenced.
I have to comment on the amazing Wolves team that despite the hurricane force winds, played a team like Liverpool at their own game and beat them, Milners face was a picture when Ruddy and our throw takers dragged their heels at every opportunity. Karma James, Karma.
I am delighted with the game, the result and the prospect of Wolves progressing to the next round.
Two years ago we beat Stoke at their ground, then Liverpool at theirs, History in reverse. We then took on Chelsea at Molineux and they put us out. I fancy our chances if the same situation occurs this year.
Iv’e never ever seen Wolves lose at Wemberleee, long that may continue.
Happy Clapper from Wolverhampton…
Footnote.
I was on a site this morning at to a man every single Liverpool fan who commented, commended Wolves on the performance and said, “we genuinely deserved it”
Who am I to argue with fans of the team that sit 4 points clear at the top of the Premiership.
What a great win against the league leaders.
We can only beat what’s in front of us and that was spectacular.
I’m dismissing any reference to them having a weaker team… that’s crap .. should have played Salad from the start.
It looked like it’s a repeat of our cup jolly 2 years ago when we whooped that clay heads on there own pitch 2-0….. after that Barnet and before we know it …Wembley Way again….
Well done boys and some pleasing performances from Neves, Jota and Rudders… and that’s not taking anything away from the others.
Citeh up next ….
Express and Star Wolverhampton news paper saying Tammy Abraham deal still on. Something to do with FIFA clearance.AND have Villa made any statement to say how delighted they are he is staying? And finally Jack Grealish and his tweet can fuck off. Oh and delighted we are in 4th round with a chance of making the 5th. May we dream of another trip to fortress Wembley?
Wembley genuinely beckons after this and I give our result to Ruddy..what an amazing save..
Ok Neves is half way to god again and Nuno fits in at this level as if he’s been doing this for years even Coady and Bennet fit in too..
Yep Liverpool did put out a weaker side but so what destiny is playing a part in this season imo..
Not sure about Stoke the old enemy but should be at least 2-0
– Famous last words..but over to destiny again…
What a season..
All FA cup matches being shown here on ESPN+…which has a monthly subscription
I signed up thinking that I can get out free ( there’s a 7 day free trial) after the Liverpool game …now hoping I have to keep paying through to May. I’m over for the Fulham match on May 4th…so maybe need to find a way to stay until May 18th Cup Final?
Meantime I’d say we played 6 out of 10…but the difference from earlier in the season is that we didn’t need 16 attempts per goal( wasn’t Burnley nearly 30?)…just 8 for 2! Now with that kind of finishing excellence and with a bit more finesse on the final ball we can play at the level of a top six team ie demolish the lower teams in the PL.
looking ahead to next Monday I’m hoping that we can see how MGW can showcase his talents at Etihad….sorry getting ahead of myself
UTW
Thank you Nuno and Wolves for giving this competition the respect it deserves. Now we know we are going to see a strong 11, more tickets will be sold. Super finishes and a great touch from JR and we were through. Great draw as well so very confident we can keep the run going into the round of 16 at least.
Football is a squad game and our squad beat their squad 2 – 1. Actually, I didn’t mind losing the league game ’cause it means we can concentrate on the cup.
Jota was like he’d never been away and Dendonker was like an excellent new signing. Vinagre was electric down the left and Coady,s passing was superb in front of the watching Gareth Southgate.
The Beeb showed the watching millions the moving tributes to Bill Slater, the pyrotechnics, all the nice touches we have become used to. A tremendous advert for our wonderful club and, eventually, our team lived up to their billing. Such an enjoyable evening.
Took my Liverpool supporting 17 year old (aka family black sheep) for a rare outing to the Golden Palace. Got home to Birmingham-on-Sea with a big grin on my face to declare to his mother that only one of us was in a good mood.
The first half hour I would have spent more usefully looking over the boys shoulder at his Instagram page. (whatever that is) From there on in I don’t know whether I just got carried away by the enthusiasm generated by the South Bank but I thought it was a thoroughly entertaining game.
We can only beat what’s put in front of us and that was a collection of very talented individuals if not a cohesive team. Either way there were some half decent performances and we’ve got a good draw in the next round so I’ll take it.
I can’t diss Klipperty for what he has done with t’pool in the last year. Virgin & Alison have been the difference for them but Moreno! Sturridge! Lovren! very poor side and Klipperty gooin on abart the wind? Wtf
Nuno has a little tinker but that could easily be a starting 11 in the prem. Well done Nuno as was convinced we’d have had “a second string” out.
Want Shrews but won’t get a ticket! Don’t want manager less Stoke but 4,500 + tickets – still I reckon i’ll be able to get a ticket for Wembley in May.
COMFB FWAW & proper FOwb
Don’t know much about the Shrewsbury pitch but a premier standard pitch like Stoke’s might be better for our style of play. Plus they’re really shit right now.
If you’re happy……. 🙂
Next time I go to the barber I am going to ask for the Leroy Sane. Unfortunately I haven’t got much hair left on top of my head. How do I get round that ? Apart from a replica Leroy Sane wig.
Just watched the second half ( again ) of the Tottenham match, and the incredible noise from our 3500 strong 12th man, especially from the 74th minute onwards.
Just think what the sound will be like when we half fill the stadium for the final in May!
Ok citeh just beat Rotherham and Burton 16-0 but it is Wolves next. Apart from penalties they have scored 1 goal in 210 minutes against us. As in the words of the Black Knight off Monty python. We fear no one!
Also in the words of The Black Knight as he lost the last of his limbs and was spurting blood over the forest floor:-
“Call it a draw!”
Do you think we should settle for that or go for the win?
Doog it would be UNDERPANTS time all over again if we came away with a draw Monday night.
We are a Premier League team. B&A are not.
And considering Spurs were playing Premier League teams and scored 11, we have nothing to concern ourselves with.
Well, maybe only one of the teams was Premier League.
