Seeing Kevin Doyle in a Wolves shirt seems to have changed my whole outlook on life, and with a glut of signings following the Irishman, things just get better and better.
My darling Irish wife thinks my upturn in mood is exclusively down to a flourishing marriage and little Wolves dribbler.
She certainly has a point. My mojo is well and truly back, but I don’t want to burst our blissful balloon by attributing my lusty haze to another beauty from the Emerald Isle.
Sod lying back and thinking of England. I’m spread eagled on the bed thinking of ‘Super Kev’ in an Old Gold shirt. I’d like to say I have imagined him scoring 15 so far (all at the South Bank end) but it is usually all over well before then.
A real passion killer would be the sight of him getting crocked, which really would be a cold shower moment for all us fans. The thought seems to loiter in the dark recesses of my mind. Oops. I have gone all miserable again.
Back to a positive thought…What music is going to play on the Molineux PA system when Doyle hits the onion bag? Or Ronald Zubar? How about Abba’s ‘Zubar Trouper?!’ Hmm, maybe not.

The mere mention of his name still makes me smile, and some of his performances will live long in the memory (Port Vale away anyone?). Shame he got crippled and lost any pace he ever had.
I was excited at the prospect of Steve Corica bizarrely, probably because Mark McGhee said he was better than Kinkladze, or words to that effect. I think history tells us he got that one slightly wrong.
Other feel good moments were when Graham Turner was given some of Sir Jack’s money to spend. Kevin Keen, David Kelly and Geoff Thomas had me dreaming of an automatic promotion, but it didn’t work out quite that way.
Right then, off to watch the Sky Sports ‘breaking news’ ticker bar. It’s about time Richard Dunne signed!

John De Wolf is a legend. I’ll always remember him for the penalty he scored against Sheffield Wednesday in that FA Cup shootout.
Getting him was a massive coup for us at the time, shame it didn’t work out how we’d all hoped. Didn’t he sign on the same day as Don Goodman?
Loving the new blog site mate, congatulations on being picked up, I bet it will be a real buzz if you could here some of the Molinuex regulars quoting your blog in the stands this season, quality.
Anyway as for Kevin Doyle, sorry to burst every ones bubble but I am not convinced. 23ish goals in two full seasons in the the Prem and wasn’t in the top 20 scorers in the championship last year, only scroed twice after Christmas in the divisions top scoring team (next to us). That is our £6.5M man??
I don’t disagree he has the potential to score 15 gaols in the Prem because he did in his first year but then….whoops…..team figured him out and started paying attention to him (and his supply to be fair) and what happend…..8 gaols and relegation.
Lets not get giving our cherry to a guy just because he has an Irish accent and cost £6.5M……he is not, and never will be Robbie Keane.
Loving the blog mate, keep up the good work……….(Thomas, you’re my real favourite…Shhhh)
Port Vale away was awesome; I was only young at the time but loved it! Every time I hear the name John De Wolf all those happy memories come flooding back…. let’s just hope all these new signings provoke similar memories in a few years time! Next stop Champions League!!!!!
@EmeraldPete – You’re on the money in terms of Kevin Doyle. But is 8 goals really an horrendous return in the Premiership? If he scores 8 for Wolves and they’re all winners, I won’t complain. If he gets 15 then there’s no doubting he was a good signing. £6.5 million was a lot for him, but it was that or nothing as Reading weren’t going to sell for less. Personally, I’m glad we’ve taken the gamble. Glad you like the blog, think you’re in the minority preferring me though.
@Danny – I was at a motorway service station the day the Wolf Man got his hattrick at Port Vale. My dad kept telling me we’d won and he’d got 3, but I was sure he was having me on. Good times.
Let’s hope Doyle isn’t chased out of town by the Wolvo mafia, whoever they are 🙂
Am loving the picture!! Great hair indeed!!
Once met him in the McDonalds on the Penn Road. One of the happest days of my life. Got 2 big mac meals for the price of 1 as well. Happy days!!!
@Edward – I met Alex Rae at the very same McDonalds. It was just before we beat Man Utd 1-0 when we were last in the Prem. Top bloke and even posed for a pic with me. Definitely one of my favourite Wolves players of all time.
Alex Rae used to walk his dog round the tettenhall green where me and my dad used to play football, I’d always hit a pass too long whenever he went past just so he would kick it back.
Awww.
Very excited about the Doyle signing. Definitely shows ambition, and its probably not just a conincidence that so many signings followed. Although his goals dried up in the second half of last season, Reading fans seem to think Stephen Hunt had the worst dip in form. Surely with service of the quality provided by Kightly and Jarvis he’ll bag a few.
Think the last time I got this excited about Wolves signing a striker was probably, um….Freddy Eastwood….
Alex Rae has to be up there with my all time favourites (nothing to do with him having a better hair cut than John de Wolf!!) Will never forget the goal he scored at reading in that play off game, almost broke my neck trying to get to the front of the stand to celebrate with him!! Also his goal against Bolton in the last Premiership season, one of the best goals i’ve ever seen at a game i’ve been at.
Think he used to live in Tettenhall because we used to see him in the Dog and Gun all the time. Was in there the saturday night after he’d announced he was leaving and had played his last ever game for us. He got a mobbed on his way out by everyone trying to shake his hand and got a standing ovation from the rest of the pub!!
@Toby – When you deliberately over-kicked it, did he send back a thunderous volley into the top corner? That would have been awesome.
@Andrew – I was excited about the Eastwood signing when he came and really couldn’t see him not being a success. How wrong I was. Doyle seems to have a better character though and will slot into our squad far better than Freddy did.
@Edward – Great story about the Dog and Gun. Was gutted when he left. I can’t help but wonder what might have been had we signed him earlier. I honestly believe we would have gone up years before we eventually did. He was that good.
have you all just seen the news, that standard liege centre back, Oguchi Onyewu that we were linked with has just signed for AC MILAN!!!!
I think that says more about the state of Milan than our abitions in trying to sign him, but if you going to loose a transfer battle it might as well be a Europeen Giant and not Bolton as in the case of Sean Daivies………….gutted about that by the way, I think he would have beend a perfect fit for us this season.!!!
Yeah, I was gutted about Davies too. Experienced Premiership midfielder who still has a few of his best years left in the tank. Would have been an excellent addition to the squad. Were we ever close to getting him though? His mate Matt Taylor is at Bolton. Probably a done deal months ago.
