Credit to Shrewsbury, they executed an underdog cup performance almost perfectly.
Great hit for their first goal, but I’m wondering if Ruddy should really be getting beaten from that angle by any shot?

Still, they dug in, kept a shape and waited for that chance to break away so the game plan worked perfectly.
A good delivery, a smart run and a powerful header is always enough to take out a zonal marking system so no complaints about the second goal either.
I’m just glad the lads were mentally strong enough to get it together and the substitutes did exactly what substitutes are supposed to do – change the game.
Cav and Jimenez combined superbly for the first goal and were the catalyst for the late onslaught that eventually resulted in Doherty powering in that header from a superb Traore cross.
Our record signing continues to divide opinion but no surprise his best moments come when he’s playing in the only position he’s truly comfortable. Right wing or nothing for me.
If there’s a major criticism of the team it’s that they don’t make the most of games where teams allow them more of the ball. 66% possession today but not really enough chances created for my liking.
The odd attacking selection probably had something to do with that and Costa’s point blank header right at the keeper underlined what they were lacking prior to Jimenez coming on.
Nuno says the schedule is tight but I’m thrilled we’ve got another game and hope they get it done at the second time of asking.
With a scalp to our name already (albeit against a cack Liverpool side) and a dramatic comeback, maybe it’s our year?

In the hat. Don’t care.
One more Wolves game to watch!! Yahoooo!!!
I agree cheesy . Let’s hope for a game against the shite home draw ! Stroll on Monday evening
Yeah mate. The Shite would be good.
What is the problem with The Shite? Makes me loff you lot
Snowflakes ay it
The result was all part of a cunning Nuno plan.
He felt sorry for Shrewsbury and told our lads to give them a two goal start, then dash their hopes in the dying seconds, so we can give Sam Ricketts and Dangerous Dave a rousing Molineux reception, as well as some nice dosh from the replay receipts.
Then stick five past them.
Arsenal and Everton among others would love to be in the 5th round draw.
They aint, we am.
I for one am happy with the result, another not defeat.
See my fellow Houston Wolves mates in Nicks Place on Tuesday afternoon.
FOwb
I told my family we’d played it for a draw to give them a nice pay day at Molineux, but, my, we did leave it late !
I forecast 5-0, but will roll it over for the replay………..
We played our Get out of jail card a bit late today, but we’re still in the competition and that’s mainly down to the ‘Never say die’ attitude that Nuno has instilled into our club. The replay will be interesting at Molineux if Dangerous Dave is fit to play.
Here’s a statement to start a few arguments.
Most valuable player in the Wolves squad?
Raul Jimenez.
Discuss:-
Him being off the pitch makes it even more obvious why he is so essential to the way the team works. His all round play and work rate is top notch virtually every game. I don’t think I’ve seen him have a duffer.
Neves has sublime passing and shooting ability but doesn’t always show it, Moutinho is like a Rolls Royce but lacks a bit of pace and can be hurried off the ball sometimes, Doherty can fall asleep, Coady is pretty damn good all the time but does concede the odd own goal or three…
But Raul is Mr Consistent.
Every one will probably have a different opinion of their top two or three players, but whoever they are, Jimenez will probably be right up there.
And we need to get him tied down to a long term contract as soon as possible.
With you 100% on this, Doogle, been saying it for weeks.
Whatever the asking price, it’s worth it.
They love him over here, in the capital of Mexico, where I live, as well!
Also, a late but heartfelt Happy 25th to Mrs Dooglegooder!
Cheers Clive!
You ringing made her morning, me buying her a ring made her afternoon and a delicious meal at The Sign of The Angel followed by ‘ Match of The Day’ has made her evening.
Brownie points all round.
Creep! Who got her the ring? ?
Agreed. Jimenez is gold. I know many have been asking for a prolific striker, but I think we already have him with Jimenez. Of course, no objection getting another! 🙂
Jimenez rests from time to time, while Doherty plays every game!! And who has the biggest area to cover? Doherty has been our best player so far in the season.
Agree plus sign another striker / front man and tie up Dendonker for £12M while we are at it.
Did you think Ruddy should have stopped the first one?
I know the pitch and conditions were bad, but found it frustrating how we let the game drift in the first half. Too eager to match Shrewsbury’s physicality and go direct. Don’t know why we didn’t let our quality shine through and get the ball down and play through Shrewsbury.
Livid with MGW and especially Costa. Both were ineffective and quite frankly irresponsible. Too often making the wrong decision, giving the ball away, or just weak.
Neves did hesitate for the first goal, but the way Costa and MGW faffed around in the corner made my blood boil. They showed no awareness and hey presto Shrewsbury go up the other end and score.
Feel for Traore. Not suited to our 2 up front system and not sure if a lack of a football brain will ever be coached into him. But I tell you what, he kept going today, caused problems with his pace and set up both goals. Going forward, could be an assist as a sub for last 20.
Cav was confident on the ball, driving at his man and trying to make things happen. Convinced that an on song Cav is the only one who can fill Jota’s second forward role.
Realised how much we missed Jota, Raul and Moutinho today. We need them in order to make the 352 work, as MGW offered nothing as the third MF, while Costa and Traore are just not cut out to play as forwards. Like I say, at least Traore still had an influence, Costa is just completely ineffective wherever he plays at the minute.
Having said all that, we showed great character and delighted to be in the hat for the next round.
Nuno pulls a Pep and a Jurgen by blaming the pitch for the poor performance. Please don’t embarrass the team, Nuno.
I noticed Raul seemed to be OK with the pitch. Cavaleiro, too.
Costa should be loaned out or sold. He shouldn’t be taking up a spot on the bench the way he has been playing this season.
“Nuno pulls a Pep” now that really is cack
Doc and Adama (when finally played as a right winger) had no problems with the pitch.
I also believe that Big Willy would have stopped the last Leicester headed goal and the Shrewsbury headed goal.
Looking forward to Sam and Dangerous at the Mol.
Well another chance to see us in action at the golden palace & let Ram Slicketts & Dangerless Dai have one last cameo at The Mol.
Still in the hat or the the goldfish bowl as it is now.
Massive shout out to Thomas for the write up & the use of the word “cack” that I haven’t seen or used for ni on 40 years – Brillo
Most valuable player – Neves – whilst I lurrrve Jim there are gud ens all round but That Goal will stay with me for ever.
PS Can’t be arsed in drawing The Shite in the next round, in fact couldn’t be arsed if we didn’t play em for the next 40 years FOwb
Nuno is a great coach. But after all this time why has he made zero progress in sorting out a huge weakness in defense ? Namely, our absolute inability to defend corners or free kicks coming high into the box. We endlessly see big opposition players getting free headers — often with the keeper rooted to his line — causing havoc which all too often results in a goal against.
Surely this problem can be resolved with proper coaching. If we have to change the so called zonal method, then lets get it done PDQ. As we stand now any half decent Sunday league team would have a fair chance of scoring from a corner. Its not an option any longer to do nothing
Good post. With Willy out the situation is in sharper focus. Could be a frustrating night on Tuesday with Andy Carroll in town and Arnautovic with a point to prove. Another high scoring game in prospect. Saiss back in midfield and Dendoncker at CH for me.
Nothing surprising or unexpected for me here. This was always a banana skin to be contended with. It’s called the FA cup, when any team can beat any other on the day. If you’re still unconvinced, ask West Ham, Everton, or Liverpool : -)
Kudos to Nuno for making the changes he did. Kept us in it and showed he’s serious about going forward. Worry not, I tell you, Nuno wants to win this cup. Didn’t finish the job today, but we will.
Let’s go Wanderers!
In Nuno We Trust.
But when the team sheet came up could not see where our goals were coming from. Costa and Traore as a front two with mgw as a feeder.
Still looked at the Subs and relief there was Jimenez.
Going forward we obviously need backup for Jimenez and Traore will always be a winger in a front 3. Talk of Cav to Leeds/anywhere is surely stupid, goodness we gave them bd.
Quite critical week ahead with the transfer window shutting and West Ham suffering a Wimbledon hammering.
Agreed Basher, our bench may not cost the same as Citeh’s but it’s the best we’ve ever had.
Traore should play on the right at all times.
Cav to stay – end of.
The Irons probably feel they owe us one after the 1st game, but 1 more win & we’re practically safe. A big week for certain.
COMB FOwb
When I made it known that I wanted a good cup run, I did not mean playing teams twice. Hey ho ….. at least if Dangerous Dave is fit for the replay, he should receive a good reception at Molineux.
See you Tuesday.
DD will get a great reception only if he’s getting married at the Mol!
Lmao
I suppose, in the end, we did well to nick the draw, although we shouldn’t have allowed ourselves to get into that position in the first place.
I’ve only seen MOTD so can’t comment on individual performances, but I thought the much maligned Costa’s missed header was actually a fantastic reaction save rather than ‘straight at the keeper’. Also, the pitch is a great leveller and the result proves that. I can’t see the teams still being level after 90mins at the Mol.
Looking forward to West Ham now, who suffered a bigger Cup shock than we. Should be interesting.
I too thought from the highlights that Costa had a powerful connection with that header, and it was unlucky not to beat the keeper. Then the forward pass from Traore that Costa ‘took too strong a first touch to, was actually just beyond his reach.
Those little Div 1 pitches are a devil for the big clubs; we’ll knock them for six (well, 5) in the replay, despite the return of Dangerous Dave .
I see a reliable journo is saying that the permanent transfer of Jonny from Atletico to Wolves is a done deal and will be going through. Goodie. Bostin’ news.
Yeah. The Spanish press (A.S.) confirms the same this morning.
Sam Ricketts:- ” I don’t know where he got 6 mins from”
Sam you should have stood where we were behind your keeper, you would have known you got off light with 6 mins, at least 30 seconds wasted everytime he touched the ball, strolling around to collect it, repositioning it , stopping to clean his boots, I expected him to get a mirror out to comb his hair at one stage!
It’s no good the ref pointing at his watch, he should have been carded for blatant time wasting.
when playing lower league teams in cup competitions it seems most higher league teams play their second string side.
We very nearly came to grief yesterday using this method so maybe it would be more prudent to play our strongest side from the off get a suitable lead then swop key players for their mini mees.
Yes I know we only get three subs but if we had played a full first team yesterday there was a very good chance we could have been out of sight at half time swop certain players who need a rest and coast the second half.
It doesn’t help having a prem game on Tuesday but if we progress in the cup it’s most likely we will have to play the first team anyway .
Personally I think Nuno may have learnt his lesson yesterday he thought we had enough quality to turn them over and he has now realised he needs a lot better in reserve than he has.
That said we are in the draw and will probably progress …..if we play our best players
I would recommend a visit to the Wolves site, click on the 12:30 minutes extended highlights on Wolves tv of yesterdays game, that’s the game I was at. Wolves never stepped out of first gear all game until their first goal went in, then when they made it 2 nil, we stepped up again.
The highlights show what a calm steady progress we made, never faltering from Nuno’s orders, executing them to the letter apart from 2 sloppy goals again. But when we stepped up, it was great entertainment. The highlights show just how many shots we did take and a couple of excellent blocks and saves from Shrewsbury.
After the game Mr & Mrs Lowves and us went for a coffee, (although they only drink Tea) and we got talking to a couple of Shrewsbury lads, they said, “in all their time supporting Shrewsbury, they have never seen them play as well as that.” I agree, it was a good old fashioned cup tie, but I never felt as if we were going out, Wolves just had too much in the tank.
As Lowves states above, ” Shrewsbury killed their own chances with the constant time wasting”, we are the fittest team in the league, only two injuries the whole season, give us an extra 6 minutes and you are going to get run ragged if your an opposing team. The result was, a goal in the 93rd, but it was 100% deserved.
Great effort from Shrewsbury, they gave their all, when Doherty’s goal went in they sank to their knees, me, I would have gone back and kicked shit out of their goalkeeper Arnold, he was an A-hole with a capital A.
The West Ham game should be a good un, Jota rested, Otto rested, all the guys that played yesterday hardly broke a sweat. Just think also, for the return cup game we have Otto, Jota and Boly.
For you guys unlucky not tobe there, the latest song.
Nuno,
Oh Nuno Santo goes down the wing for me.
Da, da, da, da, da.
Da, da, da, da, da
Yow gorra loff
Fekin luv it ……….
Watching the first half I could see no way we were going to lose that match. Shrewsbury were well organised but technically lacking a lot. Their first goal changed that. I guess Neves is still playing for the love of the game because any battle-hardened midfielder would have taken one for the team and chopped down their attacker as he broke away.
After that we stepped it up but even so MGW, Costa and DenD (to a lesser extent) were largely bystanders. The introduction of Raul showed just how necessary it is for the attack to have a focal point, and Traore showed exactly why he should be used as a sub to run at defenders as they are tiring- and only ever on the right.
I cant’ help but feel that some complacency has set in and its a dangerous thing…thank goodness Nuno’s team seem to be able to find ways to rescue these situations.
Don’t you just love the FA Cup? Big teams v little teams, big teams win and so do little teams, that’s what the Cup is all about. Watched the second half via the interweb and it was a typical cup match. One thing we do is that we never give up and that is something we have learned – never say die.
Things could be worse, we could support West Ham, or Everton……..
Surely it would be worse if we supported anyone else, not just those two?
My bottom 5, who I’d hate to be a supporter of are:
1. Obvious!
2. Small Heath.
3. Man U.
4. Chelski.
5. Tottingham.
And Arsenal for me SP
And
We all fuckin’ ate Leeds!!
We’re still in the cup…….and that’s a good thing. Other good things from the game were Doc’s ‘never say die’ attitude and Traore sticking at it to the end.
Well played to the Shrews but we earned our draw. Now it’s back to Molineux for a proper send off for Sam and Dave – Harlem Shuffle anyone?
Yeah ,….. Yeah… Yeah … do the Harlem Shuffle…..
Where’s that wacky backy Dougie….
No, Mike, that’s Harlem Snuffle.
No Dougie, that’s Harlem Spliffle!
Revealed, just what was on that Note…

That was hilarious !
That’s brilliant Stu…cant stop laffin
Surely this is why the FA Cup is all about ! Being a privileged member of Premiership is not a free pass to the final stages of this most prestigious of competitions ! Quite the opposite. Lower league teams raise their game and find extra motivation more easily. Just ask any of the 12 elite clubs who are no longer in it.
We could easily have lost yesterday. A tough well drilled team, motivated by the possibility of a local giant killing, in difficult conditions, on a day when both West Ham and Everton were knocked out. 2-0 down in the 71st minute.
Not our team. We battled until the end. The team spirit and character to keep going no matter what has been demonstrated time and time again recently. We didn’t perform well BUT we are still in the competition. We are 8th In the Premier League, in January ! The team have attracted many admirers for the way they play and we are most definitely on an upward curve. Wealthy owners, a brilliant manager, feet on the ground, ambitious, fantastic infrastructure. We have some superb players, some young players with huge potential and others who are work in progress. Having supported Wolves for a long time, I cannot recall ever feeling so happy at the position ( not just the league table ) we find ourselves in.
So let’s all stay happy, positive, supportive and keep getting behind our team and above all else, enjoy the good times !
Did anyone notice how the two guys stood in the middle of shot at the Shrewsbury extended highlights on the club website look suspiciously like Stu and Ken ‘Lowves’. I could be wrong of course. Looking very smug, they are. 10 mins 44 secs.
Smug and very very happy as were the two ladies to our right , their smiles brightened up a very cold day.
Staggered there’s still people who think Ruddy is better than Patricio. Beaten at his near post for the first and rooted to his line of a header from inside the six yard box for the second. There’s a reason Nuno wants Patricio as his number one and it’s nothing to do with da lingo
Anyone travelling to match tomorrow nite be aware met office currently saying heavy snow in West Midlands from about 5/6 pm. Keep an eye on the forecast.
Driving up from Devon tomoz for the game. Might stick my skis in the wagon.
See you in the Combemere mate.
We’ve got to stay in this! So long as we don’t draw Man City in the next couple of rounds, I think its within our potential to reach Wembley. Doing this would be a serious signal of our return to the big time.
