I only just read that the Express & Star’s Saturday Sporting Star i.e. ‘The Pink’ has been axed for the forthcoming season. Very sad news indeed.

The simple fact that they’re scrapping it suggests that it isn’t as popular as it once was. I know I haven’t bought one for a very long time indeed. The evolution of the web for getting up to the minute sports news has probably put a large nail in it’s coffin and the current economic climate is likely to be another factor.
I suppose in many ways, the world just doesn’t need the Pink anymore, which is probably sad for nostalgic reasons more than anything.
In one way, it feels like it spells the end of an era. The last remnant of my childhood years as a Wolves fan. No more last minute winners from Bully, no more Liquidator and no more Pink paper. You shall be missed.
RIP

Gutted!! Defo part of match day tradition (well when we won anyway!!). Will be sad to see it go.
Was also good for sunday league results and match reports. Was always good for banter the following sunday to see what had been said about our game and who had claimed the goals when the report was called in!!
I’ll always remember it the day I was a mascot for the Wolves. It was an amazing day, away at WBA in 1990/91. Rob Hindmarch scored in the 5th minute of injury time, and we drew 1-1. The goal was so late that the headline was all about Gary Bannister scoring the winner for Albion in a 1-0 win! Happy days. I have a picture somewhere – will have to dig it out!
I’m surprised it’s lasted this long – Pink (or sometimes Green) Saturday evening sports papers have been disappearing all over the country for the past few years. People are getting there match reports in different ways now, if you’re a paper lucky enough to have a few Premier League teams on your patch, you might only have one 3pm Saturday kick off to cover, making an evening paper full of match reports pretty redundant.
They’ve axed the second print on a saturday so theres no late edition as well i presume its all due to major cost cutting exercise.
@Ben – I would love to see a picture of you as a mascot. You were in full kit I assume? What a match to be mascot.
@Neil – You make a good point about kick-off times. That’s what makes the internet so versatile and the good old paper seem so outdated.
@David – That’s really naff about the second print on a Saturday. People who have it delivered to their door won’t be too happy about reading news from the day before on a Saturday night.
