I’m inclined to call this a victory for the old and the new.
The goals symbolic of the performance.
Firstly, great interplay between Iorfa and Doherty allowed that man Edwards to profit as the old guard kicked down the door.
Then a sumptuous cross field pass from Saiss released Costa and the Portuguese man did the rest with a dazzling dribble and finish.
This was how it was supposed to be wasn’t it? The marriage of Championship grit to continental flair.
OK, it was against 10 men and we nearly contrived to throw it away in the final minutes, but at last – something to feel good about.
It was ridiculous QPR even had a sniff given that Wolves squandered several golden opportunities to make it three, four or five before a late scramble caused predictable panic.
Thankfully we didn’t pay for that wastefulness and now have the invaluable building block of a first win in ten matches to begin reconstructing the season.
Paul Lambert obviously saw the same game we all did at the weekend and acted accordingly with wholesale changes to the team.
It’s safe to say Ikeme, Batth, Saiss, Cavaleiro and Dicko brought greater balance to the team than the five who made way.
Ikeme was quick off his line several times in contrast to Lonergan at the weekend. Lets hope the injury isn’t serious.
Batth was solid and dependable, making one fine block in the first half from a goal bound effort that may have altered the course of the game.
Saiss provided a much needed calm head and eye for a pass, particularly after the break when Wolves were struggling to find a rhythm.
The Moroccan’s ball for Costa’s goal was exactly what the team lacked in central areas against Sheffield Wednesday.
Cavaleiro submitted another hit and miss contribution but brought much needed trickery and adventure down the left.
Even in his most frustrating moments, our record signing offers glimpses of the player he could become with a pinch more confidence and a sustained starting berth.
With Jon Dadi Bodvarsson struggling for form, Nouha Dicko was handed a start and looked sharper than he has for a good while.
Much like Cavaleiro, his mere presence is enough to make defenders back off a yard for fear of being caught out by raw pace.
Bodvarsson was dangerous after his introduction but couldn’t find the finish to match the ridiculously good turn that got him a clear run on goal.
Whether it’s the Icelander, Dicko or someone else, getting our strikers scoring goals will likely be the difference between a relegation scrap and upward mobility.
We certainly can’t rely on Costa and Edwards to continually produce the goods.
But that’s for another day. In the immediate can just savour the bonus of a victory for the old and the new at a time when any victory would do.

I had the dubious pleasure of watching the whole game, big screen and all, whilst supping copious amounts of ale. And boy did I need them!
If this is the quality of football you have to put up with, week in, week out, then you have my sympathy.
That game, first half especially was dire.
Is it something about playing in that sickly green shitshirt that brings out the worst in the players?
The second half, interrupted by two excellent goals, was nearly as bad.
Do they never practise one one ones with a keeper?
No wonder our goals for column is nearly empty, with crap finishing like that.
However, as I’ve said many times, it dont matter how badly or well we play, the record books will only show the result, which in our present predicament is all that matters.
Pathetic ground, pathetic home crowd, and a pathetic joke of a manager banging his chest like a b actor out of Zulu.
But, I was really impressed with the quality of both goals.
Three priceless points and a lot of work still to be done.
FOwb
Can’t fathom why we aren’t playing in old gold & black whenever possible. Who decides these things? Our away shirts at QPR were baby-shit green. Yuk. I think Ian Holloway must have been trying to restart his heart. Yuk again.
Nothing gives me more pleasure than Wolves getting one over on Holloway. I remember when we beat Holloway’s Blackpool team 4-0 in the Premier League. Happy days. You probably forecast 5-1 for that one too, but at least you got the goal margin right! The 5-1 winning days will come back soon.
Clive are you at Houston Texas ? ifso I cantell you I was at Houston Airport 4 years ago , I am suffering with a cancer of the Blood Named Lymphoma .I don’t know how long I have to live ,that was 9 years ago so I just had to visit my destination before I die & that was The Alamo it was a great week for me & my Brother we landed at Houston and had a 4 hour wait for just a 1 hour flight to San Antonio it was worth every minute if I could I would go back tomorrow .I have been a Wolves Fan For 55 years now me & my friend go to most home games we live at Boston Lincolnshire 125 miles from Molineux that’s how dedicated we are to Wolves win or lose or draw we still go
And first and second comments.
You lot all asleep?
Wot no comment on your mate Karl?
just emailed you Clive im awake
A Good write up like the burgermeister said on the previous thread lets celebrate the victory.
On the performance i would just add we need to keep the ball better and be more comfortable with it. If we do this quality players like Costa will shine even more. Good to see Paul Lambert go onto the pitch at the end and hug the players we need bonding and this is one of the areas where KJ fell short.
Morning Clive, it does look like we’ve all shut up shop and just given up.
Two fantastic goals as you said, Costa is without doubt a very very special talent with the ball at his feet, this reminded me of the second half against Villa where he tore them apart.
You’re right about our strikers in front of goal, I think that shows the complete lack of confidence the players have right now, but that can be built on the back of a better performance than I have seen in many weeks.
Defence was better we didn’t concede early, and we looked OK at the back except for the last 7 mins of extra time.
We just need a run of a few games winning and things can turn around quickly, especially if PL get’s the money he’s been promised for January, we need to move some out, and get some premier league quality signings in with a proven track record in our top two divisions. Happily take a gamble or two on youngest wanting to prove themselves.
We just need to build a team that will fight for other no matter the opposition or situation.
Long Live Costa, lets hope he can play better and better over this month and we can emerge in January undefeated.
Three points are three points. We just have to play average to avoid relegation and that probably is the main goal, considering the present circumstances.
Great win, i thought we played really well. Looks like Lambert has been reading our posts and put the sort of team everyone has been calling for – so fair play to him for correcting his mistakes from last week. I just hope that team has a regular run out and we play like that from now on.
4-3-3 is often a disguise for 4-5-1, but last night with Cav, Dicko and Costa was defo a 4-3-3 and the pace and skill caused QPR a lot of terror. I think Caveliero will get better and better, and Costa is up to scratch now (we really need to sign him up permanently if possible). We can keep swapping Dicko and Bodvarsson in this setup too (Hopefully we sign someone like Rhodes in January to bolster our strike force)
Lets kick on and get a run of results
p.s. despite only winning 5 games this season, 3 wins have been against the top 4, so we shouldn’t fear anyone once our confidence is back.
Yes, this is the football I want us to play, and the kind of football I’d imagined Lambert represent. We fell a bit apart after their goal, but the Hawaiian football were just as productive for wolves as for qpr. Good game. Entertaining at it’s best. Costa’s goal was one of a kind. The ball looked like it was glued to his feets. And then we had Edwards goal which was clinical and just as pleasing for the eye. This is really promising. Up the wolves. Cheers!
A wins a win just think if. We’d have kept a clean sheet it would of given the defence an even bigger boost. I think the subs unbalanced the team and if I’m honest could see no reason for them espeacilly Saville this would be my on gripe with Lambert.
It’s a platform now to start building on and the starting line up was almost the 11 I’d pick week in week out defiantly the midfield I’d like to see Diko and Dadi paired together at some point I think with Dikcos pace and Dadi technical ability they would cause havoc, but as has been rightly said lets bask in the warm glow of victory………it’s been a long time coming.
Apologies if I upset anyone on this blog last night when I encouraged everyone to celebrate the win. I was in a euphoric state (and full of lager). I completely respect all views on here.We all want the same thing. A bloody good Wolves side in the top flight thrashing Sandwell Town 6-0 at the Mol in front of 31000. A long way to go for PL before he wins everyone over but last night, to me, we actually looked more like a team. Closing down quickly, defeneding well and some glimpses of good forward play. Accepted it was 10 men but sometime playing against 10 is the hardest thing to do. So on we go. Hopefully we can do something about our awful record at molineux in 9 days time.
Cheese mate can understand your joy it must of felt like winning the Champions League ( that will be the effect of the lager you had, just the 15 was it ) wouldn’t wish to burst your bubble mate quite understand you joy and relief your are a man who’s glass is half full.
I admire and aspire to be half full but I cannot always manage it, fair play to you and all the other half full folks on here.
I only hope that can repair lost confidence, I agree with most of your comments about the game except for Dicko , I thought that his time out of the game showed , I thought he was poor , but it’s time on the pitch he needs so I understand .
I can not see for the life of me why lambert loves Saville so much ( better watch my wording under the present climate … especially with saville in the same sentence! ) will someone explain it to me ,
It’s like having Darren ferguson back in the side ! We invited that onslaught straight after that substitution.
We need a new keeper too . I don’t rate Lonnigan at all
Much better team selection though just a pity that stears can’t play against against Fulham
Also Danny and Matt need to reign the fouling in , in both boxes . I understand that being a defender is a tough post these days but when we’re in the opposition s box these needless fouls diminish our opportunity from set pieces. It’s not rocket science
Anyway , we were lucky , but well done wolves !
Thanks for reminding me about Darren Ferguson. Not.
Remember the fuss before we signed him? Shall we sign him, shall we not, yes, no, yes, no. Then we went on record saying we didn’t want him because he was a mid-fielder and we had too many mid-fielders already. So why even bloody consider buying him? So that was that. Or was it? Then we signed him.
Ooh those dither days of old.
Oh! And it was worse. We were the but of jokes for a week on Mark Radcliffe’s Graveyard shift with Mark and Lard pissing themselves over the whole nonsense. Them both being City fans.
We must have been looking for some Ferguson link-up with some crumbs and favours from Alex, cheap loan deals or something. Or maybe somebody in the management wanted a season ticket for United. There had to be some ulterior motive behind buying him and keeping him for so long.
Oh , and I wish those extra 5000 who sometimes turn up at wolves would stay away .
Booing Danny baathat half time and Edwards . Absolute wankers .
I’d rather look at empty seats than hear the shit they come out with !
A lot of em seem to want to watch wolves to fail so they can spew their stupid negative bile!
Fuck off up the Albion and do your damage there !
for me,coady, saville, wallace just to name a few should be excluded from any future first team football at wolves, they are simply not good enough and will stall any progress at wolves with continued involement.sorry but they need getting shut of.
Well PL played the team the fans were asking for and it was the mix of regular and the new that put in a good performance.
Pleased for Iorfa and hope that if he is kept to his proven position he will improve, why suggest he can be a centre back when that negates his pace and ability to use it ?
Docherty to me always seemed better at left back and also went forward and helped the forwards (similiar to Tottenham ? if we can play them regulary)
Is it just me or do goalkeepers never come off their line to take crosses nowadays? anyway wish Ikeme a fast recovery.
Saiss good at the holding role, Dependable Dave and Cav getting better each game and I think will turn out to be very good.
Clive goes on about the shortage of goals and I agree but note the villa have scored only the same amount with I extra game to play and the impression is that they are doing so well now (we could have had a lot more last night as well)
Costa shows just why Mendes imports are not all bad and need to be included in the team.
UTW
Costa is the only Mendes import, basherbaz. That is, the only one with Mendes as his agent!
Heh ho…..lets get some realism here…….until they went down to 10 men we were struggling.
For the next 20 mins until Dave’s goal the 10 men were more threatening than us.
For the last 10 mins (injury time) from their goal we were defending like panicked schoolchildren.
Yes great to get a win at last, yes great move for Dave’s goal and Costa’s individuality, but…….get real we are still in deep, deep, do-do’s and January transfer window cannot come quickly enough.
I’d keep the same team with Jack Price for Coady for Fulham, and pleeeaaasssseee Saville nowhere near the teamsheet -why cannot our managers see that he is nowhere near championship ability.
Two really good goals and a decent team performance, though I was a little concerned how their ten men pinned us back early in the second half. Particular mention goes to Iorfa who had a much better game, which should help his confidence no end.
Onwards and upwards!
Just seen the suggestion re signing Jordan Rhodes from Middlesborough, Jan will be very interesting and we shall see just how commited Fosun are with the money
Pleased with the win obviously (especially as I predicted the score) but a couple of comments which may or may not be well received.
The defence always looks better with Saiss in front of it. Is Ikemes rushes out of his box inspired by PL?
Good goal by Dangerous. Equally good individual goal by Costa but its the individual bit that worries me. Cavaleiro for all his ability rarely looks up to see the pass and loses the ball too often as a result. But 3 important points, hopefully more to come. COYW
A better performance because the team was far more balanced.
Saiss represented a major improvement in midfield, and the selection of two genuinely fast wide men was another positive development. Sheer pace on the outside always terrifies defenders, and this we have in abundance. Cav is not by any means the finished article, but he has huge potential, and will surely grow in confidence if he is regularly selected. We took a big step back last night when , for reasons unknown, he was replaced by Savile, who is just not good enough at this level, and as usual contributed nothing
The three points is invaluable, but this result should not serve to disguise the fact that if we are to survive the season intact, we urgently require quality recruits for key positions in January. The fact remains that we are simply not good enough in key areas all over the pitch. A lot of dross needs to be cleared out. Period.
I’m not going to get carried away with a good performance against 10 men, but I’m delighted with the effort put in by the lads last night. Confidence was rock bottom, so that much needed win will push our guys on to improve if we can keep it going.
January should be interesting and I for one can’t wait, Saville, Coady, Wallace, Evans, Texeira, and Gladon all need to move on, first signing should be Costa in my opinion.
Had our shooting boots been better last night we could easily have been singing 5 for Clive that’s what was on offer to be truthful.
One point I want to make is, people like Costa, Dicko, Cavalerio and Bodvarrson are all struggling (or appear to be struggling) because they are so far ahead of the other players in terms of skill at the moment that they shoot forward with the ball only to look round to find they are on their own up there. If Calalerio had copped a goal then he would have been the best thing since sliced bread. He holds the ball, does his runs in and out of the defence and more importantly, he keeps us in their half.
I tell my 12 year old Grandson every Saturday get your defence onto the half way line, that way your team is always in their half and it bloody works. With more possession last night we caused them problems.
While your’e marching your’e not fighting. Simple.
RIP Manuel from Faulty Towers, funny, funny man.
I agree stu , watching cav last night , I know he got caught offside sometimes , but some of the balls that went astray looked to me to be the right thing to do , some of our players not reading his game .
The late great George Best said, ” you don’t run into a space where the ball is, you run whete the ball is going to be next”
Signing up Costa should be priority number one indeed. I knew he was pacey, but not so pacey, and his technical skills are just incredible. A bit egoistic at time, but his skills justify it, as long as he’s not overdoing it. The only thing he need to develop now is his shooting skills.
As many have pointed out, this was against 10 men and should be looked at in that context. But I would like to balance that with saying that playing 10 can often bring it’s own problems.
Those 10 often raise their game, seeing the chance to be unlikely heroes by taking the points.
The 11 then face the full weight of expectation, something with which we suffer persistently at the Mol. So playing against 10 is no guarantee of anything.
Prime example : Birmingham 1v3 Wolves
That said, prior to the dismissal we were poor and even afterwards, there were spells where we couldn’t get a grip of the game. But some of our play was exhilarating and the goals were both superb and showed what we can achieve when we play together as a team. Dangerous Dave played well throughout again and was Johnny-on-the-spot once more. I expect his many detractors will now hush awhile.(or maybe not).
Costa’s goal was a thing of beauty and I too would like to sign him permanently. But if he’s for sale when his loan runs out I’ll eat my hat.
This is a start, and it’s a long and uphill road from where we are. But I feel we’ve made a start, at least.
I was hoping for a draw so absolutely delighted with the win. Lambert’s first job was to make us a bit more compact and then to add a bit of attacking intent. So far from his three games I think we’re starting to look a lot more like a proper team rather than eleven individuals. Still more work needed to turn us into a top six side but I like the way Lambert is quietly going about things.
Last nights team had a nice balance to it. The defence played well as a unit and its a shame Stearman won’t be eligible for the next game against Fulham. The midfield of one sitter and two box-to-box runners worked well. I am a big Price fan so always disappointed when he doesn’t play but fair play to Saiss he played well until he tired at the end which is understandable. The front three needs to build up a better understanding and be a bit more clinical in front of goal but what a strike from Costa – top quality.
And now I can relax and enjoy the weekend for a change!
That’s a relief anyway! Amid all the tension, two things, apart from the goals, enlivened proceedings for me. One was Holloway’s maniacal shouting and gesticulating, with the ever present threat he’d bring on a coronary, especially when beating his chest so vigorously. The other was Doherty’s forward surges. There’s something quite remarkable about a man who has so little control of the ball careering past players and finding to his and no doubt the crowd’s astonishment that he has somehow maintained possession and is bearing down on goal. He’s a big solid guy so maybe the opposition decide it’s best not to get in his way feeling confident that sooner or later he’ll knock the ball out of play. I found it hilarious. Reminded me of the wondrous Steve Kindon. Coady can play like this too. You gorra laff……
If I was Holloway, I would seriously consider investing in wireless communication equipment and earplugs to the players.
Yes Nancy – part of the fun was watching Holloway losing the plot. Wearing the club scarf is the equivalent of kissing the badge and about as sincere
If one suffers a Cardiac Arrest and your’e unfortunate enough to witness it, making a fist as Holloway did and thumping the guy on the floor over the heart with the force Holloway used should momentarily stop the Fibrillation, allowing the dominant pacemaker in the heart to correct the problem the guy is experiencing. Studies have shown that the thump on the chest (a Cardiac Thump) produces the same force as a 50 joules shock from a defibrillator.
Conversely, Holloway smackin himself on the heart like he does will stop the friggin heart which in his case is not fibrillating, thus rendering himself fooked. Dozy half wit. It looked really pathetic and false.
I thought the defence was good.
Stearman’s presence was invaluable.
Saiss should be the first on the team sheet.
Agree with StuWolf about Costa, Cav, Bod.
They have vision.
I think it is why both Costa and Cav appeared to be ‘selfish’ and try to score rather than pass.
It’s a lack of trust and P.L. needs to sort that out.
I didn’t think Coady played well but, for the first time, was really impressed by Iorfa.
Often we had two players going for the same ball, which was a mistake but again, the result of a lack of trust by individuals, of the whole teams ability…
After Savile came on we might as well have been playing with 10 men.
I only saw him touch the ball once!
Still, let’s hope Lambert sticks with the nucleus of this 1st team.
It was dire and scrappy but, at this point, any kind of win is a great result…
Well done the lads!
A great bit of coaching by Hollowhead.
“Heart!!!!!!! Heart!!!!!!! Heart!!!!!!”
I didn’t know Hart was playing.
Watched the game and was reasonably impressed with the renewed Batth/Stearman partnership and very impressed with Dave Edwards – I’ve likened him to Martin Peters before, underrated, works hard off the ball and always liable to ghost into position for that important goal.
The Sky commentators say that he’s probably the best midfielder in the division at doing that and they can’t be wrong all of the time.
Costa was superb. He’s a very talented lad and we could do a lot worse than sign him on a long term contract.
Unfortunately, the one we did sign for £7m is still flattering to deceive. He doesn’t know when to release the ball so invariably, after going past a couple of defenders he ends up losing it.
I thought Ikeme looked very shaky. Dropped a couple of crosses and was lucky to get free kicks from them. And his rushing out of goal had a hint of “Will I get there, or won’t I” about it.
The referee wasn’t too hot either, he should have awarded a penalty either way in my book but I suppose that’s fair.
I agree with some comments about Lambert’s substitutions. I really fail to see what Saville brings to the party and taking Dicko and Cav off reduced our counterattacking capability.
Very happy with the result though. Three valuable points for Wolves and valuable points for me in the prediction league.
Oh! Yes! Forgot to say that Iorfa had a very good game too.
Getting back to what he was doing when he first broke into the first team.
Spot on DooGooder!
Also agree with your comment below on Dominic – it hurts me to say it, but imo he has gone backwards since his breakthrough season with the first team when he looked like he would end up with a Premiership club sooner rather than later (and, no, I don’t mean with Wolves!).
Hard to understand how his form has gradually dipped to the point when he has at times been a liability this season. Maybe it’s a confidence thing with no real senior pro like Williamson to play alongside him and nurse him along when the rest of the team are struggling for form and confidence themselves. Hopefully it’s not his under 23 appearances that have gone to his and Kortney’s heads and that Lambert can help get him back on track.
Back to last night at The Loft – much better shape and quality and pace about the side. Agree with most of what’s been said, particularly Saville! The subs seemed to surrender the initiative back to QPR when they came on. Duracell Dave was again outstanding – not the most gifted player, but always gives 100 per cent and pops up with important goals.
Finally it was very noticeable what a great team spirit there was and I particularly noticed that Saiss and Costa seem to be very popular with their teammates judging by the post match celebrations on the pitch in front of us Wolves contingent.
Early days to get carried away, but what an important 3 points that could turn out to be.
UTW!
I still believe Jeff should offer him a golden contract instead of selling him to Westham for instance. Then he could move his mum to Wolverhampton :=), which is one of the reasons he want’s to move to London, according to an article. When he’s at his best it’s like we’re playing with two wingers out right. I’ve also heard there’s been mentioned a 5 m price tag on his head, which of course is way too low. 20 millions sounds like a fair price if we’re selling.
… And I don’t believe he will get as much play time as he gets for wolves. So much is at stake for Westham, and he’ll most likely end up as Sako – on the bench or worse.
29 Sleeps till the transfer window.
“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”
🙂 🙂 🙂
But you Jocks don’t celebrate Christmas, coz it means spending money.
Strange how the game mirrored our 2-1 win at QPR under Mick McCarthy early 2012. Back then we were flirting with the relegation places and hadn’t won in ages. QPR had a player sent off and we won 2-1 though it could and should have been more.
Last night was not pretty but we deserved the win. Costa adds something special and I believe Cavaleiro will too given a bit more time and the manager showing more faith in him. Saiss is also quality and should start every game.
Defensively although a lot better last night I still think we have issues. I think Iorfa is better at centre back than full back and left back isn’t Doherty’s best position. Both Batth and Stearman continue to worry me.
January – ditch several including Saville, Henry and Gladon and sign 4 new players : 2 x centre backs, a left back and a striker.
Can’t make the Fulham game due to family issues but got me ticket for Forest away on 17th December when I hope to meet up with the Newark Wolves for a drink or three before the match. Any other bloggers going to Forest and want to meet up?
Regardless of the sending off, we were looking a lot more solid even at 11 v 11. In fact we had the two better chances in that period – Edwards’ header and Costa’s shot. So I’m not bothered that we beat 10 men – the team looked balanced and competitive. The only problem is one of confidence. At 2-0 it was flooding through the team and we really should have put away at least one of the 1on1s that we created. But at 2-1 and with 7 minutes added on you could see confidence draining out of the team and panic setting in. Instead of managing the situation (by retaining possession) we were naively booting it up the pitch only for it to come back like a boomerang. This needs to be addressed urgently by PL, but it will probably need an injection of experience to do it. Otherwise good performances by pretty much all of the team with Saiss’ passing – crisp and accurate – the stand out feature for me.
I said only last week with the foreign players we have if given a chance they will show through, because quality always counts, its all about the blend,Costa,Cav, Saiss.played their part admirably.
A huge slice of luck with the sending off gave us the lift we needed because we where under the cosh for long spells in the first half.
In the end we should have buried them but hung on for a much welcomed 3 points.
Its a long way to go,but its a start…Happiest I’ve been for a long while with the way we played.let’s hope that win breeds confidence to all of us.UTW.
Watched the game, even though I said I wouldn’t if Saville was even in the squad let alone the team.
Spent the first 15 mins praying that we kept the ball out and the last 10 behind the metaphorical sofa with a large scotch. That said what a difference a balanced team made. I agree with most comments made by fellow bloggers but how can PL even consider leaving Saiss out of the team. The mann was immense last night, definately gave the back four some much needed confidence in my opinion.
Only downside for me is that Stearman has to miss the Fulham game, just hoping that Ikeme is ok because our back up keeper does not fill me with any confidence.
Nice to see Iorfa somewhere near back to form, Dave Edwards my MOM.
Onwards & Upwards.
Behind the sofa with a large Scotch Eh?
I didn’t know that StuWolf watched the game at your place.
No he wasn’t but he will welcome anytime he wants to come.
My missus, Wergs Road WAG or Tettenhall Tottie as she likes to be known ( I only married her for Dad’s money problem was I got Border Wolf as part of the deal!!!!!!), says she will organise a barbie for bloggers in the summer if Stu can cope with the alcohol and a hot tub.
God help after that.
I’ll get my diary out then ..!
Forgot to add Why the F*** was Saville sent on. Useless TWAT
One for the books……
Paul Gladon is in the U23’s squad playing Norwich, 30 mins into the 2nd half and he has a hat trick. Wolves winning 4-2, they were 4-0 up.
Bet he’s on the bench against Fulham.
Yes, a hattrick should at least qualify for a place among the subs. Is it Lamberts system he’s benefited from? Exciting.
a bit off topic ,but id like to mention a point that nobodies mentioned ,when the wop was appointed manager the pitch at the mol was noticably narrowed.traditionally the mol pitch has been one of the biggest pitches in the uk with many great footballers gracing the hallow turf,so why dont we put it back to how it was a give the wingers room to do there stuff instead of packing the midfield with no romm for width/wingers. just saying lol.
Look my friend, “wop” is a derogatory and perhaps racist name for a person of Latin origin. Do not speak like that on this blog.
I was just reading about Neil emblem . About 20 years ago I used to work at the same place as his girlfriend. He used to leave me a ticket at away games . Top bloke but never really knew him .
After he left for New Zealand he had success as a player but more interestingly he had major success as a coach . So much so after coaching their Olympic football team , they made him assistant coach for their national team . He said ” When the football scores come in, I look for wolves first “
2006/2007 ashes tour. Went to football match in Sydney. Sydney FC v NZ Knights. Emblem and Darren Bazeley played for NZ. Steve Corica played for Sydney. No bullshit.
Neil Emblen: Fabulous chap, particularly if you remember the Crystal Palace connection. He signed a merchandise catalogue on a visit to the Wolves Shop. Reminds me of Big Dave. Also lived in a smashing barn conversion just north of the Wergs.
Priority is a Striker. Our Strikers are not scoring. Priority is a striker. Just hope our GD does not keep us from achieving our aim, because at the moment our lack of goals is causing some concern.
If last night taught us anything it’s that Cavaleiro and Dicko must start. Cav must wonder how he ended up here and for him to have been on the bench as we lurched towards the drop was ridiculous. Stearman in at the back seemed to shore things up too, let’s face it anything is better than having Hause and Iorfa in the same back four. Lambert saw sense last night, let’s hope he sticks with it. Now if only we could win at home…
He had strong opposition in Onuha, a player which I in the past have bought in Football manager due to his pace and tackling skills. Still he managed to dribble him off many times – even passified him at times.
Well, we’ve stopped the rot..
Lambert’s face said it all at the whistle and incidentally welcome to the traditional Wolves crap yourself time -last 10 minutes..
The (result) was fantastic and so were our 2 goals but we missed at least three more so PL with his coaching experience must put that right I hope..
DB /Steers did ok I admit give or take their goal who I blamed DB for as the Captain ..when that big bloke came up for a go we should of had two on him ..- was back to the Alamo..
Costa at this rate could even stop me pining for Sako ..he’s now obviously a target for us to sign and give or take the fact that all the Portuguese players are selfish and go for glory his particular goal was out of sight.
Dave Edwards goal shows why he is such a
key club player ..
So,we are still lower table ..we need a run through to January ..the nxt 5 games I reckon will decide this season.. 12 points would be nice.. Forest away looks daunting ..
Ladbrooks give 50-1 for Wolves to make the play offs and scrape up..if we buy buy buy in January particularly a no 5 and a cracking striker then our hopes could re-materialise ..
Too hopeful?
QPR were obviously very aware of our ability to give a goal away early and really went for us. Was anybody else looking at their watch and thinking if we can just get to sixteen minutes we can break the curse? Problem is teams cannot maintain that pressure for a full game and just like at Villa we have the pace to hurt teams as the game goes on players tire and the game gets stretched. For fifty minutes you could not tell that we had an extra player but then we put our foot on the gas and left them. These are the tactics we need to build on and my only change would be to bring in the Prince for Coady as I felt we needed a stronger presence in front of the back four.
Just one other thought. Seems like there is a body of opinion that Lee Evans should be one of the players that needs moving on. Before he went to Bradford I didn’t think he was ready, one good game one average then disappeared. But when he played well he got his foot in and could find a decent pass. He had a good season at Bradford and we have not seen anything since. I’m not saying he’s breaking the door down for selection, but I wouldn’t mind knowing what level he is at now before letting him go.
Haven’t seen any suggestion that the club are looking to sell Lee Evans but it wouldn’t surprise me given that Wolves have recent history of selling the FOOTBALLING midfield players or left them out completely as with Jack Price.
Wolves will probably struggle big time next weekend to gain any possession once Kevin McDonald strides the stage. A player who’s talent was constantly abused by a manager who didn’t use him to his full potential.
It’s criminal the way Jackett treated McDonald should still be here the most creative midfielder we had for Donkeys years and he’ll probably score as well…..criminal !
Spot on – and yes he will probably score on Saturday when considering that virtually every player we sell on comes back to haunt us.
Ridiculous state of affairs selling the one player who actually had some vision and no mean amount of skill. Shades of Cookie with that left peg.
A thought on the Richard Stearman situation.
I find it surprising that he’s not allowed to play against his parent club. If Fulham have the low regard for him that we are lead to believe, I would have thought they would have stipulated that he MUST play against them before they would loan him out.
Its often for the loan players self interest to not play against his parent club. Imagine if was involved in some highly contentious event or broke someones leg. It wouldn’t sit well with the fans on his return. Best to sit it out.
Jesus Christ I love the Aberdeen German Christmas Market.
Just got all the kids presents for a tenner…….
They are doing a pack of batteries for a quid.
Label on the back says, “Toys not included”
Bit of a coincidence that, Stu. I was in Aberdeen when they built that market this year.
The whole thing arrived prefabricated on the backs of trailers on the Friday night before the Preston Game. For three nights they were up til gone 2 am banging about.
I was in the Mercure Caledonian on Union Terrace. I asked to move rooms.
But I think this is the same enterprise as the Manchester German Christmas market and the Leeds German Christmas market and all the others.
There are at least two stalls there selling scratchings. Home from home. I asked, “Where did you get them from?” Reply, “Staffordshire”. …….Oh! that part of Germany!
Severe Groin itch
I grew up in Mastrick in Aberdeen many more moons ago than I care to remember. The Granite City, it always tugs at my heart strings when I drive down the hill into Aberdeen, especially driving past the prison where my dad was locked up. 🙂
But, I was born in Germany whilst my dad was in the army, so a Ittle link there and me being a feckin pikey ties the market stalls in. Prior to moving to Wolvo about 12 years ago, I spent all my adult life in Cannock / Rugeley Staffordshire. But I feckin hate scratchings.
It’s a small World matey, a very small World.
Were you on holiday or working?
Hi Stu
It was a family celebration, in-laws.
I checked out the Flybe flight costs and times to get to Manchester and car hire to get to Preston. Just couldn’t do it. The wife would not have been pleased. But I would have got there easier than going up past J16-J18 M6 and the snow.
Stayed over for most of the week. Great place Aberdeen could withstand a nuclear attack, no trouble. Didn’t get to Pitodrie either, it’s still on my to do list.
What do these German marketeers do the rest of the year?
I think they revert back to speaking Polish and take up their jobs as plumbers for the rest of the year. But that’s me being cynical again and I think I will get a slap on the wrist from our PC bloggers. We scattered my fathers ashes right by Pittodrie he lived in the flats over.ooking the ground.
‘I think this is the same enterprise as the Manchester German Christmas market and the Leeds German Christmas market and all the others.’
Don’t people ever go to Germany any more ? Unsurprisingly they have good German Christmas markets there – I can recommend Aachen.
Starting the Christmas theme…….
Guess the song.
Missing toe and wine by any chance..
I’m stumped BOG, at first I thought, “Toot toot tootsie goodbye”
Well done that man, but no Brownie.
One for all true Wolves fans of the last few seasons.
Off topic I know but today at Tottenham Swansea managed NO shots on target, NO shots off target – so that’s not one single effort on goal in 90 odd minutes – and NO corner kicks. So basically they did taff all. Wonder if that’s a record? Even in our darkest days in the PL under dear old TC am sure we managed something!
Only one xmas tune by our very own Noddy and the boys. Did like Nellie the elephant as well by silly punks The Toy Dolls. Wizard wor bad neither and i’ve seen Roy Wood avin a beer round Wolvo. Looks the same now as in 1967. Amazing how rockers manage to have and keep loads of hair.
Cheeso, he used to drink in The Vine in Wombourne a lot, when I played for their Sunday League team.
Isnt that special?
Fuckin sound clive!
Vine is virtually a restaurant now. Wombourne is the new Penn if i lived in Penn think i would feck off to Texus.
And the fuckin’ shit are 6th in the Prem!
The world has gone mad!
Cunts hate pulis ? All of a sudden it’s pride midlands etc
Clive dont dodge it mate Wombourne is hot in Penn you cant find a fence that goes from one end to another.
I watched the England Australia match on Sky yesterday.
I don’t know what Eddie Jones is feeding those lads but I wish he’d give some to Paul Lambert to feed to our lot.
What a performance!
On another subject, I have just been entertained for fourteen minutes or so by Ian Hollowhead’s post match press conference.
Do you think that Ricky Gervais based his David Brent character on him?
“Don’t assume. It makes an “ass” out of “u” and “me”.
Priceless!
All you local guys…..
The U23’s play tomorrow night in the Checkertrade trophy at the Molineux against Sunderland.
If your’e a season Ticket holder it’s free, if not it’s only £2 to get in. STH’s can get in the WV1 bar for free but you have to phone up for the ticket, but you can get food in there before the game.
They won 4-2 on Friday with Paul Gladon bagging a hat trick, well worth a look because if Gladon scores again I’m sure he will figure at some point on Saturday.
Get down and support the lads, I will be there but in one of the boxes. Lifes a bitch sometimes.
🙂
Come on me Babbies.
Sorry guys, Dis-information.
It’s £5 to non STH’s or members. Full details in the link below. Sorry

Just thought I would post this link for anyone interested.

Its from a QPR fan page but well worth a read.
The points made are valid and interesting and could be said by the majority of clubs in the Football league at some time or another.
At last a win and I was happy to be proved wrong. Good goals too.. still 20th still a lot of work to do..
Excellent article.
Thanks for the link Nige3367
A really well written article and absolutely spot on.
If my (failing) memory serves me correctly last season Wolves were screened on 16 occasions bettered – if there is the correct terminology – only by Leeds.
Having to travel from Bedford for ridiculous kick off times and alternate days was bad enough but we have only 200 miles to travel as a round trip to Molineux.
Some Wolves supporters travel a good deal further from such far flung outposts as Devon, Scotland (a guy I met at Bolton a few years ago travels from Kilmarnock), South London, Wiltshire, Essex (another fan I had a rattle to at Corley services travels on his own from Shoeburyness) and so on. (However it also greatly inconveniences supporters much closer to WV1).
As the article mentioned yes every club welcomes the cash injection that Sky provide but surely sense and reason has to prevail. Not having a traditional 3pm Saturday afternoon kick off for three or four months is madness.
Anyway I doubt whether Sky even considers those who actually want to attend the game and with so much money swilling about the clubs ain’t gonna argue on our behalf any time soon although I seem to recall the Leeds chairman putting up the barricades last term. Not sure how that panned out to be honest.
Suppose it’s just like banging your head against a brick wall – eventually you get used to it.
BOG
I hope I’ve got my facts right here, but one possible reason for the low number of Wolves fans at qpr was the £37 a ticket price tag. I could be a millionaire and wouldn’t pay that. On principle. Greedy buggers. Although I fully accept the Thursday evening kick-off is a massive factor.
I’ll give it until the end of November and then I’ll pass comment on progress, I said to myself back on takeover day. Well November has come and gone and none of us can honestly say where we really are. After watching every home match in recent memory, the last home game really was an all time low, certainly as bad as some of the ‘Clipboard’ games in my opinion. Did anyone else notice what the pitch side advertising boards were displaying at the 89th minute – LoveWolves? – there was certainly some irony in choosing that moment to ask that question. Well the answer will be in the number that turn up next Saturday.
So we move forward using the same old strategy used so frequently by the club for so many years – kneejerk reaction: it’s there in recruitment, team selection, tactics and most notably in the boardroom. We need to change the way we approach all aspects of the football game and the sooner the new owners recognise this the better.
Crouch coming in new year
Brilliant comeback by Bournemouth against Liverpool in the second half. Even Afobe looked good when he came on as a late sub. He almost scored. Bournemouth are a good team but not as good as the score line suggests. They didn’t suddenly become Barcelona at half time but the players showed what can be done with passion and the right attitude, even at 3-1 down. There’s a lesson here for Wolves. With the right attitude and passion we can do a lot better with the current squad. These qualities have been largely missing for a long time. We now have rich owners prepared to invest in the playing squad and a proven, successful, head coach. The omens are so much better than they were this time last year.
So its FA cup draw tonight bloggers (7.00 BBC 2) – time to grab a sheet of A4 and write 32 “vs” down the middle. I guess most fans these days would say “so what” but for me the FA Cup was simply magical.
Since the inception of the Premier League and Champions league place for the top 4, plus the untold riches of ensuring survival in the top flight, the FA Cup has to all intents and purposes been relegated to a “bit part” competition for the so called “big clubs” until at least the quarter finals and key players are rested. Unfortunately clubs in the lower divisions also choose to adopt this philosophy and it really is all a far cry from the time when the FA cup was THE knockout competition in world football.
Our beloved Wolves won the cup on 4 occasions, the last of these in 1960 and since then we have played in 4 semi-finals (1973, 1979, 1981 and 1998) and lost the lost. Unfortunately I witnessed every one of these defeats and for me the most bitter was losing to those grubby Yorkshire cretins Leeds United at Maine Road in 1973.
During the formative years in the 1960’s I used to wait with bated breath for the third round draw. Christmas 1963 or thereabouts and my cherished grandparents bought me the ultimate present – a transistor radio with a large dial on the front indicating the wavelength settings of a multitude of transmitters and locations, some of which I had never heard of at the time (Hilversum, Lille, Athlone, Allouis) plus some of a more familiar nature (Moscow, Warsaw, Droitwich). Twiddling the dial resulted in a high pitched “wheee hoooo weeeee” as the machine searched for frequencies to connect with. Marconi was a visionary!
Well what on earth has this to do with the FA Cup one may ask? Well for me it meant tuning into the Light Programme and then Pete Murray on radio two for the third round draw live from FA headquarters, Lancaster Gate, London. (The first ever live draw on the BBC actually took place in 1937. Pete Murray/Bryon Butler covered the 40th draw in 1977).
The FA cup represented a magical excitement across the country with the opportunities for lowly football league or non-league clubs to get one over their lofty opponents. Yes it has happened to Wolves as we know but apart from the infamous Chorley defeat, when 63,000 turned up (funny how many Wolves claim to have seen all three games), The Grand Master himself witnessed a shock of epic proportions when his all conquering Wolves lost 1-0 to Bournemouth from the third division in front of over 42,000 – the magic of the cup!
In reality my earliest recollection of the magic of the cup arrived during 1964/65 season. In the third and fourth round we defeated Portsmouth and Rotherham before the draw (as listened to on the aforementioned transistor) pitted Wolves v Villa. And what a titanic struggle this proved to be. Over 100,000 watched the first two games at Villa Park and Molineux which failed to find a winner. So the second replay was played at The Hawthorns on a bitterly cold evening with the pitch carpeted in snow – it resembled the icing on a wedding cake. I stood on the Brummie Road terraces with a mate from the time – Martin Wheeler (I wonder if he reads this blog) – after arriving via the 74 West Bromwich Corporation bus from Dudley. Hugh Mcllmoyle bagged a hat trick as Wolves ran out 3-1 winners. Of course we already knew our quarter final opponents having smuggled the radio into school and tuned in to the lunchtime draw – Manchester United and Matt Busby with his second crop of babes including the mercurial George Best and then usual suspects of Law, Charlton etc. 53,581 crammed into Molineux on that Wednesday evening (the game was scheduled for the previous Saturday but snow put paid to that).
In what proved to be a humdinger of a game Wolves swept into a 2 goal lead early on thanks for Mcllmoyle only for United to score 5 including 4 in 24 second half minutes. Peter Knowles scored Wolves’ third late on but United went to the semi-finals only to lose to Leeds.
Looking from the North Bank end, the South Bank was an unbelievable site with thousands of cigarettes burning like fireflies and clouds of smoke billowing under the Molineux lights. In those days the South Bank terrace was one of the largest in the country housing around 29,000 spectators and when full it was quite a sight.
So ended my dream of following Wolves to Wembley for the FA cup final as I was too young in 1960 and my beloved dad refused to take me along…thanks dad…
Over the following 5 decades or so dreams of Wembley and an FA cup final with Wolves were dashed time and time again but that is for another day..
Next up – 1973 and the run to the semi-finals – only to lose to those evil feckers Leeds at Maine Road.
Have a great week guys.
Herewith a tip – If you want to remain of sane and sound mind I suggest you don’t glance at the top 7 in the Premier League. It’s enough to make you feel physically sick and bloody angry.
BOG
Hilversum. I remember that name from a shortwave radio I had back in the 1970s.
Great memories BOG.
I was at the Hawthorns that night as well. 74 bus from Great Bridge, maybe the same one who knows?
Yes Tipton we could well have been on the same 74 bus.
Dropped us off right at the back of the Brummie end on the Birmingham Road.
How much from Dudley to Hawthorns – maybe three (old) pence?
I was the 12 year old wearing winkle pickers after pestering mum at Christmas time.
Nearly 52 years ago – bloody hell.
I think you have the fare about correct. I was 20 at the time and had already been a suffering supporter since the end of the 53 season.
Time flies when you are having fun. NOT
Thanks for that BOG.
I was feeling pretty chipper until I read your tale of ‘what might have beens’ and ‘what did beens (??!!) but many years ago’.
And yes, the South Bank was a whopper wasn’t it – and there were a damn sight more than 29000 in it the night in 1972 when we beat Leeds 2-1.
I swear I was three inches taller and two inches thinner when I came out of that mass of humanity (and Leeds supporters).
Sorry about that Doog did not mean to upset your chippiness!!
Without a doubt the South Bank was home to well over 29,000 on that unforgettable night v Leeds in 1972.
Heaven knows how many surged in without paying after the gates gave way at both ends of the ground under the sheer weight of humanity- -and Leeds fans as you say!
One day we may once again be involved in such high profile games but heaven knows when
BOG
The Bournemouth 1-0 defeat was notable for two things. Firstly Ollie Norris used to stand in front of any Wolves player taking a throw-in and jump up and down. It really threw the Wolves team and put them out of their stride. This blatant obstruction technique was later outlawed with a change in the laws to stop it.
The second and most unusual thing was the Bournemouth player breaking the Wolves goalpost. He was so intent on reaching the ball and running at full tilt, that he ran straight into the goalpost which promptly snapped in two. There was much humming and hawing, and no-one let alone alone the referee knew what to do. Eventually two blokes appeared wearing brown workcoats and carrying a stepladder. Twenty minutes later a new upright had been attached to the crossbar and the game was restarted. One of the strangest events seen on a professional football field – and we still lost. Laugh ? – oh how we cried…..
Great article providing a detailed insight into matters Wolves nearly 60 years ago.
Enjoyed the read.
Cheers

Good article. I enjoy your stuff. I was at both home defeats by Utd in 64-65 and 65-66, also. If you want the programmes I still have them. I’d been to the 5th round at Villa, 0-0, then onto the night match replay at home. I remember Phil Woosnam was in America at the time trying to tell the yanks to play football, and me glad he wasn’t playing. I couldn’t get to the Hawthorns 2nd replay (another night match) being at school at the time. And then there was the big one, again a night match.
I was in the South Bank with my school mates. It was a very chilly night. The crowd crush was tremendous, there were kids being bodily lifted and passed down overhead to the touch line. Pennies dropping out of pockets, limp bodies; you had to get the right side of the crash barriers. I was with a scrawny lad called Stephen Woollam, a violin player, he’s mentioned in Wikipedia’s entry for Bilston. He got sent overhead before the game even started! Next day he told us, after a little attention, he had a great view of the game down there on the grass.
I remember Bobby Thompson superbly tricking Denis Law and Law doing a cartwheel out of frustration. Law was brilliant that night. A great goal for Knowles in the South Bank end late on and Wolves fans telling United fans, “Watch out for him, he is going places”. I was walking out up the slope to the Molineux hotel surrounded by United fans in fur-trimmed parkas, biro-writing all over them lauding their successes. They were Ok, they just seemed to live in a different world from me. I was so jealous.
The match was televised, (the BBC should have it in the archives somewhere) so I got to see it again later that night with my family round the tele. I could go on. What a game!
At the 4-2, the next year, I had to get a day off from my Woolworth’s Saturday job. The next week I went in and I was sacked, I’d used the same excuse as all the other lads who hadn’t turned in the previous week: ‘My Grandmother died’.
Here’s a bit of Wolves FA Cup trivia. I remember on the night of the 1960 cup win the pink was printed on yellow paper (well, old gold, of course). I can see my dad now reading out the report of the game to me. Yes, the night the pink went yellow.
Wow SG – wonderful memories and an enjoyable read. The bit about Woolworths is priceless and makes clear your priorities. Quite right as well!
Thanks for the offer of the programmes.
Three years ago I was under threat of mutiny from “petticoat government” indoors – either the programmes or the 7″ vinyl go or I do. I gave a few to Bedford Wolf who now has every Wolves programme since 1954 and the rest, including the 60’s cup games, were donated to the Molineux museum. I decided to keep the vinyl collection purely on the basis that, unlike the programmes, finding a suitable home was more difficult.
Absolutely spot about Peter Knowles our very own “George Best” and had been mentioned before what a bloody loss when he packed it in for the Jehovas Witness sect.
Spot on regarding the 1960 “pink” it was yellowish with “OURS AGAIN” plastered across the front page. Tremendous!
Unfortunately we will probably never see the likes again.
Lovely paragraph about the violinist from Bilston highlighting Black Country culture!
Finally tv footage of both 65 and 66 games v Manchester United are on You Tube.
Thanks for the read
BOG.
I was in the Cowshed end that night too BOG …couldn’t take anything away from Charlton, Law and Best …although when we went two up I thought a shock was on the cards…great night despite the squeeze…
Hi Twix –
You are right – take nothing away from that Manchester United X1 – they were a splendid outfit to be fair. But what a game – as it was 12 months later in 1966 when United beat us 4 2 at Molineux after “piggy” Wharton put us two up – age just we surrendered a two goal lead.
Amazing days

I too was at both those home defeats to United in the cup, great, great players but their fans were bastards.
Anyone else remember the filed down, big old pennies thase twats were throwing at us, as well as the darts??
I bet Stuwolf has still got any pennies that came his way!
Changing subject, I just received my number 48 of 306 limited edition Bully 30 years book
Signed by the great man “shit golfer, top man”
Thank you, Mr. Bull, for the thousands of wonderful memories.
And of course, FOwb
A good 3 points last Thursday. Anything would have been an improvement over the previous Saturday’s dire performance. Saiss was the missing link, let’s hope he and Cav get a run of games. Helda Costa is a quality player, It’s a shame he will be going back to Benfica.
And Dangerous Dave does it again. Top bloke.
All in a decent performance.
…and I manged to get my prediction right for a change.
😉
Stoke City away ….I’ll be going to that ….!
So will me and Mrs Wing Mike. Went to Stoke in the’80’s and got beat up on the train at a place called Blyth Bridge. Fond memories of the place…………….not !
Yeah stoke. No love lost there. Probly get off train in stafford av beers an then back in to stoke. Hopefullly the temperature will be above minus 6.
“Any way the wind blows” – when you go to Stoke that is.
Stoke away, yep, I remember the car park behind the Bootthen end, wall to wall rocks and half house bricks most of which came our way.
You can laugh Clive but one of those sharpened pennies turned out to be really valuable with Queen Victoria’s head on it, so last laugh on me.
Great win for the U23’s tonight, Enokhabare scored and it was 1-1 at full time, Wolves won on penalties 4-3 with Harry Burgoyne pulling off two fantastic saves. 1,118 turned out, nearly as many as the first team got against Burton.
I too have fond memories of Stoke.
The North Bank “choir” massed at the other end to the Boothen, forgot its name, irrelevant anyrode, and at about 2.30 ish we all ran across the pitch and took the Boothen.
They all ran like scared wabbits!!
And another time coming back from an evening match in my Dad’s trustee Volvo Estate,

Pub quiz poser for you all;
What is the colour of the icing on the cake left out in the rain in the classic song MacArthur Park?
No googling or you tubing allowed!
Sweet green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain,
it took so long to bake it and I’ll never have the recipe again.
Stoned or what??!!
MacArthur Park – one of my faves (but then I am tone deaf).
Another good performance from our youngsters in the Checkatrade last night. Bright Enobakare especially impressive. Just three wins away from Wembley. The future’s Bright……..
What do I win, Bedders, what do I win?
You don’t win nuffin’, because as Mr Pedant, I would like to point out that you missed out the words:-
I don’t think that I can take it
‘Cos ……
First prize – a goldfish. No only joshing chief. It’s good for morale you know. Prize? As the wonderful Ade Edmondson once said to the equally wonderful and much lamented Rik Mayall in an episode of The Young Ones – a big girlie kiss on the bottom.
On the subject of music I recently acquired a newly remastered CD of the magical Bowie album Aladdin Sane. My all time favourite Bowie album. Even more so than Ziggy Stardust as it was Aladdin Sane that got me into Bowie though I did then buy all the earlier albums (and all the subsequent ones). The first time I played the album, the first time I heard the opening bars to Watch That Man fair blew me away. 1973 I think?
That gold fish is fucking mine !
I’ve got an empty sound proof tank waiting
Every morning , I’ve been down that Ouse with my big net and ear protectors .. and now , not only do I find out you never released it … you’re trying to give it away again as another of your fucking prizes . People like you shouldn’t be allowed to keep fish or run competition s
That’s a bit harsh on the Texan exile. My Jen de Wolf wants that one played at her funeral but I don’t ever recall Any reference to lettuce in the song. Give him a Brownie at least. Perhaps I’d better re-phrase that in light of the current climate in football, a bit touchy feelie. Bugga, I’ve done it again.
I see Edwards has been give a 2 and a half year contract, I really am amazed he gives his all no doubt about that but I’m sorry his all, most the time in my option is mid table championship at best.
Like Batth what is it with Wolves no matter who the manager or owner they seem to settle for mediocrity,I really am baffled and dismay……..I really am .
Do the people who run Wolves really have the ambition to get to the Premier League………do they really…I really am starting to wander…..?
Absolutely. If we want to progress to the Prem, the last thing we need is a goal scoring, run forever, midfielder in our squad.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Here’s another competition.
Who sang that one then?
The prize is one of the fish from my lovely pond.
I’ll eel mail it to the winner.
Meatloaf – how many fish you got? Can I have it battered? Or just lightly knocked about a bit?
Mind you my prize may be invalidated as I agree 100% with Paul Feather….of…….. the …..stone AD.1967
As I have said many, many times of dear old Dave Edwards yes he runs forever, is 100% committed, chases lost causes and can pop up in the right place at the right time to glance in a header or bundle the ball home BUT the man cannot trap a football to save his life and as such, in my book any road up, is not a footballer and never will be. I accept at the moment we are a bit like Edwards (and Batth) – a club that tries hard and means well but lacks quality but that doesn’t mean that is where we should stay or aspire to be surely? If we really are aiming for the PL (premier League/promised land) then we want something a little better than ‘tries his best’ don’t we? Like quality.
Bedford thank fuck someone else can see through the” gives his all ” which he does but the bottom line is……….and this is for all the Davenport Edwards fan club……..it ant could enough look at where we are folks hadn’t won a game for 9 the m beat 10 men QPR and yes Edwards scored…..where was he the previous 9 games….?
Hey Paul , I never have a problem with Edwards so called failings because he has a couple of really good aspects to his game, one being he sticks the ball in the net (joint top scorer ATM ) which is pretty important, maybe it’s just me not being able to read the game as good technically as some but he would be one of the first names on the team sheet, besides we are currently a bottom six championship team so he could perhaps help us move up to the middle for now , ha
Well said Marney.
Deadly has been a bloody good player for our club. Always gives 100% and never goes hiding in games. Also if he is dropped gets on with life and fights back.
Tipton, he was brilliant in the 9 winless run we went on……absolutely brilliant .
You can’t blame Edwards for the 9 game winless run. He had more than a few shirkers to play with.
If it’s you not being able to read the game properly Marney, it’s me too.
Although, you don’t need to be able to read the game too well to recognise a goal when he ghosts in and slips it between the uprights.
Oh! Don’t you just love it when I talk dirty!
Feels like that 10 day ennui between games has set in. For those who are interested about the ‘large network’ we have become embroiled in via Fosun, this article is worth checking out.
http://www.scmp.com/sport/soccer/article/2052213/whats-link-between-wolves-brad-pitt-and-uk-broadcaster-channel-4
And as the article points out, we are not expecting Brad Pitt to pitch up in the next transfer window. Interesting times we live in.
I saw that article and similar others. There was one in the Financial Times recently.
As the article implies, there’s no way that Fosun will be selling Wolves if things go pear-shaped. It’s more likely the other way around, if at all. There’s a much bigger picture at work here. Obviously Fosun want us promoted ASAP, but if it’s not this season, so be it, ownership will continue.
I don’t think Brad Pitt will become a Wolves fan, but I think his ugly cousin is a Wolves fan already. He’s called Cess Pitt..
As has been mentioned we are in a relegation battle that is down to the players not performing or just plain cannot deliver the goods.
Edwards has been a good player for Wolves but even so is he a Premier League player, NO.
He trains well is a nice bloke always has a smile on his face but looking forward if we do get in the Premier League would anyone on this blog really believe he has the ability to play there he didn’t last time and hell be 4, 5 years older if we get there next season.
The fact we are in a relegation battle say it all about the squad we have Davenport has been here for 2 promotions and 2 relegations with a posible third on the cards, I’m just questioning are we building for the Premier League or League One if the latter then give him 4 years like Batth.
Who’s next for a bumper deal…..? Wallace, Saville just because you train hard and are brilliant in training and walk round the place smiling even when we are in a relegation fight doesn’t mean you deserved a new deal, help get us out of trouble then well talk about a new deal……..cart and horse me thinks.
As before I agree 100% with you.
P.S
Brilliant in training apparently we are like Barcelona in training……….pity were are not like Barcelona on and Saturday and Tuesday.
If that’s the case give them all 4 year deals what does it matter if we get relegated.
I’m with Wolfstroker and Doog on this one. Edwards has been one of our best – if not the best player this season so why not reward him with a new contract? In any sort of version of a 451 system he plays well and is one of the only central midfielders we have who regularly scores goals. (Although I have noticed that Saville can do the same when played in his proper position of central midfield – cue outrage from all his detractors even though he is our leading goalscorer in calendar year 2016!)
Anyway if Edwards isn’t good enough for the Prem (which I don’t think he is to be fair) then worry about it when or if we ever get there. In the meantime Edwards for player of the year 2016-17 gets my vote!
We all have different opinions on players and when the expected clear out begins in January I’m sure not all of us will agree on the incomings and outgoings but will still be cheering them on each week.
OODCL
I must admit it always tickles me when people moan about Eddo, Joe Soap and all saying they aren’t Premier League quality. We’re not in the Premier League. Premier League quality players are, in the main, playing in the Premier League. That’s how it works. Championship quality players win you promotion and, if you want to achieve anything once up there, you flog most of ’em and buy, yes, Premier League quality players. Simples.
Wolfie – I’m not moaning about Edwards because he is not Premier league quality I am moaning because he is not top end of the Championship quality. But mostly because he is not a footballer.
I know its all my fault but I can’t help it.
I was brought up in the 60’s and 70’s which means that to me Wolves midfielders, or indeed any proper midfielders, are people like Bailey, Hegan, Hibbitt, McCalliog, Knowles, Hunt, Burnside. You know, footballers. Every one of them could trap a ball, pass to a teammate (and I don’t mean one of these new-fangled modern ‘passes’ which are backwards or sideways and only go about 5 yards), shoot from 25 yards into the top corner, dribble past an opponent using skill and technique etc. In other words they could all play football.
I am not denying that Edwards runs all day, chases lost causes, is 100% committed, tries his best, scores a few goals (though I think if we had a count back on the number of ‘goals’ he has missed this season I suspect he would be break-even at best and possibly in negativity street), is good to his Mum and is a thoroughly top hole sort of a chap. Despite being Welsh.
What I am saying though is that he lacks the quality and ability I would expect of Wolverhampton Wanderers – don’t even start me on him being our captain for a game or so! lol – regardless of whether we are Premier League, Championship or whatever. I would also say that if he, and others like Saville to name but one, are the embodiment of the Fosun dream of achieving Premier League status for this club as soon as possible then I am the Chinaman not Mr Shi.
Bedford exactly mate. If Ewards is the standard, we can forget Premier League Football while he’s here.
Bedford, We all touched on this previously it’s real chicken and egg job. Whilst we languish in the bottom half of the table we are not going to attract any quality players to the club. My theory being that they would rather play for a bottom 3 team in the Premier League than a bottom half team in the Championship. Of course that also brings with it Premiership wages.
I’ve banged on for years about performance related wages and bonuses in the game like it used to be just bigger numbers. Just like Clive said on here but it will never happen. I even think a wage cap would be an improvement lets just say £150k per week, if you could not live on that, then there is something really wrong in your life, whoever you are.
Just to highlight the differences did any of you see Chelsea second half last week end, My bestie is a life long Chelsea fan and my ears are still red hot.
Not stirring muddy waters here, but it’s really interesting this debate on Dangerous Dave at this point in time.
Last week a footballer from one of the London clubs (think it was Palace) took it upon himself to actually come on and wax lyrical about Dave Edwards, totally out of the blue. He siad, ” he’s the ultimate professional” and that, he’s modelled himself on him. Then just this morning another from Brighton has gone to the papers and said exactly the same. So he appears to be making people sit up and take notice of him, perhaps the same as our bloggers today.
Me, Iv’e not really been a huge fan, but like everyone else I do believe he gives 100%, i did post last year my feelings about him not having the legs for a full season and to be honest still believe that. I think in a better squad as on Thursday he will shine and has the ability to be in the right place at the right time.
For me, the jury’s still out on him, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility he could have a swan song, i was talking to Clive this morning and he’s been offered a 3 year deal with a £12-50 buyout clause if the Albion come knocking.
FOwb eh Clivey boy. Still some life in those knees kid.
Jon Dadi hasn’t scored for centuries.
Dicko hasn’t scored since he’s come back from injury.
Dave Edwards is joint highest scorer for us this season in the league.
Season 2013-14 he was 5th highest scorer
Season 2014-15 he was 4th highest scorer
Season 2015-16 he was 3rd highest scorer
They might have been quite low totals but at least he scored them.
Nobody rattles on about the rest of the side who couldn’t find the net.
And trapping a ball doesn’t make you a footballer.
Peter Knowles said that Derek Dougan couldn’t trap a bag of cement but I think that most people would agree that he was one of Wolves Greats.
Low your not kidding to use that as an augment in Edwards favour in a squad and team that has over archived since we came up from League One……….Doog you’ll never make a lawyer…….what your saying is he better than most in a very bad bunch…..I rest my case!
Ron Suanders said Bully coudn’t trap a ball either, he wan’t that bad though, and before someone jumps down my throat I am NOT suggesting Dangerous is as good as Bully
Ooh you were lucky there Tipton, I was just about to leap head first! lol
With a Blog handle to match the great man. …YES….THE DOOG…..OODER…
I couldn’t trap a bag of cement either Twix.
Although the PMDG’er says that I must have headed a few in my time.
Doogie – we will have to agree to disagree on this I feel. To me having the ability to trap a football does differentiate between a footballer and an athlete. I also think comparisons with strikers like the Doog or Bully are as spurious as a comparison with say Matt Murray or Micky Stowell. Edwards is a midfielder and is judged differently surely? It would also be interesting to look at how many ‘goals’ Edwards hasn’t scored or in fact missed due to his limitations. But of course it goes without saying that if he is wearing the old gold and black – or the atrocious fluorescent lime green – I am right behind him. He actually almost injured me last week as when he scored at QPR I leaped up and nearly fell over the seats in front of me and it was quite a drop down to the lower tier!
Glad you didn’t fall on me Bedford – must have just missed me, as i was in the front row!
For the record I’m fully in the DooGooder camp when it comes to Duracell Dave.
He’s just like Marmite – you either love him or hate him.
UTW!
I said it before and I say it again because some people are not or do not want to acknowledge what I’m trying to say and by the way I have NEVER questioned Edwards commitment only his ability at this and Premier League level.
We are in a relegation battle and that comming from Lambet by the way not just me. So then is it wise to be giving out 3 year contracts to a player on championship wages over 30 when we could be in Leauge One next season……..does any one really think this is good bussiness sense.
Anyone rember when we were relegated last time from the championship with most the squad still on Premier League wages.
12,500 pound aweek is Edwards worth that much really…..at a club that has won one game in the last 10…really.
Madness giving out 3 year contracts to ANYONE when would could be in Leagu One next season no wonder this club is where it is.
£12.5k Per week is a lot of money to any one, but in foot ball it’s peanuts. I have just read what the Arsenal players want!!!!!
£400k per week, I still think that this is why the whole of football is in a mess outside of the PL
I do acknowledge what you are trying to say mate, and appreciate the point you are making, I just don’t agree with it.
We would be in a much deeper relegation battle if you chalk off Dave Edward’s goals.
He’s scoring them in the Championship, against Championship clubs. How does that make him not of Championship standard?
Taking that argument to it’s natural conclusion we should get rid of the entire first team squad in January and buy a new lot who we know will succeed in the Premier League.
I don’t think even Fosun would stump up the cash for that.
So Doog you think it’s ok to be giving out 3 year contracts when it still could all go pear shaped. And just a point about Fosun if it does go pear shaped what the betting they don’t pull the plug completely they are not going the throw good money after bad.
I’m think of the future a Premier League future with a lot of luck if and it’s a big if just because we’ve won one game I think some people think we safe already I rember a few people the last time thinking, ” no we won’t get relegated got to many good players ” and we all know what happened next.
I’ve never run a bussiness but I know one thing about finance the the golden rule don’t over extend yourself on the assumption everything will be ok, and if you think Fosun will keep stumping up think again they will relise sooner or later there flogging a dead horse.
Interesting debate on Dave Edwards and the merit or otherwise in awarding him a new contract……
A couple of thoughts:
1) There is a direct correlation between the unexpired term of a player’s contract and their transfer value. Therefore, if Wolves do decide to sell Edwards at some point, (e..g if we get into the PL and decide we need to upgrade) there is some logic in locking him into a longer deal now.
2) On the general comments around Fosun….they are an Investment Group. They invest capital to make a return. If they decide the capital investment is not generating sufficient return or that they could get better return by redeploying capital investment elsewhere they will do so. They may have a 3, 5 or 10+ year plan for Wolves but they will reassess this on a regular basis and if returns aren’t matching/exceeding expectations they will pursue an alternative strategy. They may have very deep pockets but they are not a Wolves mad benefactor a la Sir Jack. I think for a variety of reasons inc. Fosun’s strategic intent it is absolutely critical that Wolves are in the PL within 3 years at the outside – they will not keep investing ad nauseam until the promised land is reached and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
I gotta stick my oar in this debate.
Football is a business, and like all others, is results driven.
Salesmen don’t get commissions up front, they are earned, based on results.
I think footballers should be paid the same way.
Reasonable basic wage, but massive incentives based on match results, goals scored, league position, etc. etc.
I also do not like this business of signing/negotiating new contracts partway through a season.
I fell all contracts should start and end during the close season.
When the season finishes, based on a player’s performance over the past 12 months, he could be offered a new deal, or politely told he is up for sale.
Yes, there should be contingencies built in for injuries, and of course we have the Bosman rule, but eventually things would even out, and agents could be a thing of the past.
Pie in the sky thinking perhaps, but what a novel idea, footballers actually trying to earn the ridiculous salaries they get.
With regards to Dave Edwards, I personally have never been a huge fan, but he has been a loyal guy, and is doing better than most at the moment.
With him, the old saying applies: What you see is what you get.
At present, undropable.
And I still cannot look at the Prem table.
Sixth?
Fuckin’ sixth?
The football world is upside down if poolis’s style of football is getting them up there.
Madness, utter madness.
Next someone will be telling me Ward is still “playing” in the prem.
A really big FOwb is merited.
One could argue that Bosman destroyed football as we knew it.
Whether that was a good or bad thing is open for debate (what isn’t?).
The trouble is that when, at the end of the season, a player is told politely he is up for sale, he will say “I’m not up for sale, you didn’t renew my contract so I’m a free agent and will walk away for nowt”.
So clubs will never let a player with any value be in that position.
Their investment in him has to be returned.
Talking of which, Ward IS still playing in the Prem.
What has the game come to?
Not only Wardy. Vokes, George Friend, Guedioura. All up there.
Define the word “playing” !!!!
I didn’t really want to get too deeply into a debate about this. I just feel that we ain’t gonna sign Yaya Toure and his buddies unless and until we get promoted, and only then if we’re prepared to put up the dosh. The fact Dangerous Dave misses a few chances makes him even more important to our team because it shows his remarkable knack of being in the right place at the right time, unlike most of the others.
I’m overjoyed we’ve secured his services for a few more years. Like a good wine, he’s improving with age.
Call me delusionary but I noticed that my online bookie BetVictor had Wolves 50-1 against for promotion yesterday. OK, we’re a long shot but surely not that long?
For fun I stuck £100 quid on to return me £5,100 if it happens. I wouldn’t have been tempted if the odds were 20-1.
I checked the odds again after my bet went on, and they plummeted to 33-1.
Typical!
You’ve gone and ruined it for everyone now!
