The best teams – more often than not – find a way to win.
Whether it’s through quality, resilience or outrageous good fortune, coming out on top becomes second nature.

Wolves are rediscovering the habit having delivered the goods without being at their best so many times last season, including this very fixture.
We didn’t play well at St. James’ Park, even against 10 men, but ultimately forced the mistake that turned the game and eventually capitalised on the advantage.
I expect the margins will be similarly narrow on Sunday.
Newcastle
Steve Bruce has been at pains to stress his side have started the season with a particularly difficult run of fixtures.
And while it’s true they’ve played all the big guns minus Man City, they’ve also failed to beat Watford, Brighton and Norwich in three of their more presentable opportunities for point accumulation.

Two wins against Spurs and Man Utd have counterbalanced those disappointments though and despite being in the bottom three, they’re very much up and running.
Scoring goals has been a major problem and the 5 they’ve netted so far (all from different scorers) is the joint lowest with Watford.
Aside from the 5 they shipped at Leicester, they’ve been reasonably disciplined defensively so maybe there’s evidence Bruce is trying to build from the back.
In Almiron, Saint-Maximin and £40 million record signing Joelinton they should have the players to do more damage, but as a completely new forward line, that understanding might require some time and patience.

The home end
Some comments lifted from the pre-match thread on a Newcastle fan forum.
I just wanted to mention that I said Wolves would come good about 6 weeks ago when they were 19th! I said this because they had also had tough opening fixtures and I have been proved correct and they now sit in 11th with a game they will be favourites to win next week. I have heard people saying we have to win this game, but imo that is not the case!! we need to pick up around 6-9 points out of the next 4 games is the way I see it and we will be in a very good position! wolves are a better side and can play a bit, so I expect we will struggle to get anything in the game.
Hayden still suspended but bar Ritchie and Lejenue there doesn’t appear to be any additional injury worries. With the formation Wolves play and the players at their disposal I think we have to try something different against them. If Hayden was fit I’d try matching their formation with a 3-5-2 and try and win the midfield battle which will be crucial in this game but without Hayden I’d go 4-3-3 with Schar moving into a DM role just behind the Longstaff’s because the other CB’s we have aren’t mobile enough or good enough with the ball and play a bit longer up to the front three.
no need to change anything wolves are a well drilled until and we won’t see the ball, so makes no sense to change anything! I don’t like almiron on the right because you can see he’s not comfortable there like he does on the left! with max being a lefty too i’d swap the two around for a trial , but nothing drastic. I don’t see any other option but to counter because we cannot keep the ball and there’s no point dropping anyone for players that can’t run fast enough to break.
the problem is we don’t create many chances maybe 1 or 2 a game so even if we had good finishers we aren’t likely to score enough .. rondon was a clinical finisher with both his head and feet and Ritchie and perez were feeding him … he could also score from free kicks and joelinton does none of that as well… zero!!! he can’t hold it up aswel either. last season we were effective because we played this system and had a sting in our tail and now weve lost that aspect.. People can say drop almiron , drop joelinton all they want it’s not going to be better if we play carrol and atsu is it. we have no ability to pass and move in our squad , so why any thinks removing pace and adding another striker will make a **** of a difference is beyond me.
Wolves
Assuming fitness and availability of all of the below, this is the team for me.

If Bennett remains out injured, Saiss is the only choice for me in that back three after Vallejo’s antics against Southampton.
I think they’ve got injuries at the back so makes sense to really try and test them with Traore and Jota either side of Jimenez.
Nuno normally does the opposite of what I’m expecting these days, so more likely is a 352 with two or three changes in personnel to the above.

That’s where you’ll also find my best guess for this one.
Up The Wolves!

I think we will play 352 at the start with Neves starting and Doc on the bench. Then again what do I know?
We still seem to be set up to play more effectively away from home just like most of last season and so I think we will get a narrow win.
I am going for a 1-0 to us though I wouldn’t be too surprised if we won 2-0 or 2-1 or, with shades of AirWolf 90, even 4-1!
Well after last week i predicted 4-o and every thing fell apart when Bennet got injured and var decided to do us again. Im hoping Nuno puts his strongest team out and moves Neves further up the pitch and go for the jugular from the off
After last nights performance , Max Kilman has to play at the back . Cannot risk Vallejo or we are in big trouble ! Lovely lad but not fit for the prem. Please Mr Nuno don’t play MGW from the off or at all. His form has dipped and Mr flicks and tricks man isn’t working either.
All being said if we play the fluid football that we all know we are capable of I cant see this game being much of a problem. On the back of a confident win in Europe I predict a win…..COYW
Jota finally on the score sheet and we get back to our winning ways.
Every time I predict a win we draw, every time I predict a loss we draw, every time I predict a draw we win or lose, so it’s a…
In a fairly confident mood, I must say.
It looks like we’ll be seeing the majority of possession – hopefully the MF can supply Traore/Jota with plenty of ball on the flanks, so they can wreak havoc and provide oppos for Raul.
In a game where we need the midfield to unlock a deep Newcastle defence, I’d stick with Moutinho and Saiss. The latter is very good in a two; breaking up play but also more than competent on the ball. I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, Donk is nowhere near good enough in possession and contributes little.
Kilman did little wrong last night – no problem with him starting again if Bennett still out. Hard to predict the exact team due to the hectic fixture schedule!
Victory will taste that bit sweeter by shutting up the scotch egg obsessed Elephant Man, sorry, Steve Bruce.
Interesting game on Sunday…..Traore made the difference going forward last night in Europe and should do the same against a poor injury depleted Newcastle
I’d like to see us create more chances Sunday than we did against Southampton where, beyond the two goals that never were, I didn’t see us looking very threatening.
Jota being back to his best should be a big help.
Keep some energy saved to do Villa mid week as well please boys.
The omens are not good because – I’ll be at this game, in the home end sitting on my hands and not saying anything in case someone spots that my accent isn’t as undecipherable as their’s.
It’s not obligatory to have to remove all your clothes from the waste up is it?
Only if you have man boobs.
Horses for courses is a saying that regularly rings true in the sport of kings and it resonates in football too with St James Park/ Sports Direct Stadium or whatever it is called these days being one of our happier hunting grounds. We’ve won there the last twice in the league so we are going to confound the statisticians and finally, finally, at last actually beat a crap team as we secure the hat trick.
I think we will have to much for them. A narrow win but three points non the less.
Does anyone agree we should ditch the green away strip – I found it difficult on the telly at times to see where they were! Great camouflage but it did’nt make for easy viewing!
It’s primarily there for all our new Mexican fans, Andrew. Apparently Raul is the third most followed premier league player on social media so it’s pretty good marketing, as well as camouflage, for our third strip to be in Mexico national team colours.
Thank you Mr Pigeon. There are always financial ramifications that are not, at first sight, apparent!
Think Jota will get 2 and he owes us after the sending off
Boly deserves 1 for his all round efforts
First off, a big thanks to all my fellow bloggers for the birthday wishes, and Dr. Nuno & Co. for the early present last night.
Doogle, your next task is to get the duck back in the box!!
How can we go to Geordie Land and not think of Bully’s foursome?
Brucie is a perennial loser, in the same dinosaur mould as mcDickwadhead, and this season will be no different.
They might have beaten Manure, but let’s face it, a lot of teams are gonna do that this season.
They are in the bottom three for a reason, and pony tail boy is missing this weekend, which augers well for us.
Diogo is gonna be on fire, with his sense of injustice fueled by a ridiculous first yellow card decision yesterday. ( the second yellow was inevitable, just surprised it took so long in coming!)
An easy 5-1 away win, the second of four on the bounce.
Oh what fun it is to be a Wolves fan these days!!
Brucie is a perennial loser! If he’d taken over from Mad Mick in 2012 we would have had a double relegation. Hang on, we did! We managed to find our own perennial losers!
Will be interesting would prob. Start as 352 with said coady boly doc neves dendoncker moutiniho Johnny Raul jota and then bring on traore with half hour to go to run at their tired legs probably for dendoncker coutinho for jota with 20 to go and mgw for moutinho for last 10 but will probably be wrong
Either way wolves win all day
Happy birthday Clive. May your celebrations continue into the weekend with another Wolves win on Sunday.
Let’s go Wanderers!
Wouldn’t it be great to follow up Thursday’s win with another one at Newcastle. Nuno has a bit of thinking to do what with Killman playing so well Thursday and Sisa back, me I’d put Sisa in midfield to combat the two brothers because unlike Dendonker he get stuck in.
I’d drop Dendonker to the bench he’s not been in form recently just seems to let games pass him by I’d keep Killman in Bennett’s position the lad is comming on and Newcastle haven’t scored a load of goals only have one up front so he should be ok with the help of Coady and Boly.
Up front it has to be Raul I think Catronie needs a rest it’s just not working for him at the minute why I don’t know he puts the effort in but there’s been no end product has to be Jota and Adam they will frighten the life out of Newcastles back line.
I read some of the comments on here and see people going for a dour championship team. I want to see our flair players all out there. With the likes of Neves, Traore and others we can turn difficult games into wins. I still think this is a tough one but we should win it. But not by going back in time.
When we played Slovan Bratislava last night it was plain to see that their team were set up well to run at us and hold us at the back. Barring that wicked deflection off Coady’s foot, we were doing ok and getting some momentum. As sure as Dog made duck eggs, on came Traore which meant they had to put 3 men on him every time he got the ball. This opened up Slovan greatly and the rest is history.
For me, play Traore and Doherty for the 90 minutes, tear the Geordies a new one. If we go two or three up, then rest Traore, but let’s take 3 men out of the game and 3 points out of the Toon.
Newcastle 0
Wolves 6 Jota, Jimmy, Cutrone and Boly to sort it out.
Loving this………..
Jota to come out swinging and a repeat of last season’s scoreline.
Great result last night and we should, on paper, win on Sunday.
Gone are the days when we could say with almost certainty, ‘whe’re on TV, so that’s screwed any chance of getting a win’.
In fact, I’m getting quite used to us giving a good show of ourselves and bringing home the bacon.
Would be nice to keep a clean sheet and for Cutrone to get a couple to boost his confidence and our belief in him.
Not expecting a classic against a team set up to negate but not create.Never liked Bruce, the man has little style and zero class. No loyalty to clubs or their fans.
Expect us to win a bitty game with, I hope, Jota and Traore up front with Jiminez
Hmmm. Will be knackered from last night and flying back. And if MGW and Valejo play we will be crap. Another 3 points lost.
Shit aye We.
The Brompton Cafe’ is closed on Sunday from 1000 hrs due to the owner travelling to Newcastle. It will reopen from 0830 on Monday for returning fans.
Are you doing all day breakfasts on Monday?
That’s Full English… as I’ll need something to soak up the wine following our humongous walloping of the Geordies…..
Will we be knackered from Europe? To hell with knackered, the lads are on Cloud Nine. They are becoming battle-hardened. A number of heroes last night but special mention to Traore for electrifying the game when he came on. I’m guessing there will be little love lost in Mike Cashley’s Toon-Land for Traore, given his previous with Boro.
The Longstaff brothers look a handful but I’m backing us to edge the match by whatever margin is necessary. I suspect 2-1. I’d be happy to call on Max Kilman again; he played a blinder last night. But, please Nuno, give MGW a rest. He looked totally devoid of confidence and needs to go on loan if we strengthen in January.
A few sheets to the wind in Padstow, feeling confident! Raul, Jota and Traore to click and Wolves to win!
Yes, a bit of a blow today.
Glad you’ve made it to God’s own land.
Lots of Cornish beers to sample – all with medicinal properties.
If we get the first goal it should be a piece of piss but you never know what might happen with Wolves. Cutrone to come on and score.
I have got family who are Newcastle STH’s and I never hear from them from one year to the next unless they beat Wolves – so I won’t be hearing from them again this weekend then. Another away win to keep our fab run going. Heading to Birmingham tomorrow to see Cher in concert who I am told is even older than Clive – just !
Bloody sight better looking, that’s for sure.
Disagree
She aint that bad!!
Another trip to the NE where all fans are a lot more passionate than everyone else. Well I think I would be roaring my head off if I was sat there in the middle of January in a vest and shorts. The land of Speedy Clark off Byker Grove. The only thing speedy that the Geordies will encounter on Sunday is their own goalie picking the fucking ball out of the net for the fifth time. A blubbing Gazza up in the stands will seek solace in the bar with his 17th pint of Desperado and the bass player out of Lindisfarne will throw himself off the top of The Angel of the North. So all in all a shocking day for Steve Bruce and his biffed up nose. Goals from Adama (2) Jimi Diogo and the usual header from a corner by Saiss will do it. After the match Nuno said ‘ I grew up watching Byker Grove on telly in Portugal. It was shit’. Steve Bruce said ‘ Mike Ashley is a wanker and I blame him. The fans can fuck off’. Geordies 0 WWFC 5.
You been at the sauce Chessy mate ? Cor stop loffin !
It’s hard to understand why Ashley bothers owning a football club as season after season, one of Britain’s richest men really seems to relish taking the piss out of the fans. It’s a sorry state of affairs and a support so big deserves better.
However, there’s no room for sentiment in football so I shall be grinning like a Cheshire cat as our goals go in on Sunday.
The front line I would choose matches Thomas’s and, unlike many, I don’t have a downer on The Donk, so would be happy to see him in midfield. Saiss in the back three with Conor and Willy.
Looking forward to seeing the game on the magic telebox in the Duke in Ivybridge, so if you’re around, get yerself in there. Bit of a jaunt from Padstow though Ben.
Now there’s a thing. A VAR review goes in Leicester ‘s favour at Southampton tonight. ………….
Wasn’t Bruce the Vile manager when they did us 4-1 ? Something to be wary of. Having said that, with Thomas’s team above I’d expect us to win.
Logistical wise after our European game i don’t think we could have picked a worse fixture to have geographical wise
Fancy us to turn over the geordies on Sunday
Happy to see Kilman play, and great if Jota can settle back in with a couple of goals. The Slovakians seemed to be very physical and I don’t blame Jota if he was angry, a man can take so much and he takes a lot of kicking.
I’ve got my predictions so wrong so far this season so I’m going to go against my own grain…….
Still not entirely convinced that we’re firing on all cylinders yet, so hence my copout forecast of a score draw, based on our apparent difficulty in finding the net and the defensive capabilities of this week’s opposition.
Therefore 1-1 for me I think.
Mixed feelings about this game. We did well away from home to beat Slovan Bratislava 2 – 1 in the week even though by all accounts we were not very good in the first half.
We struggled against Southampton last weekend at home and they just got well and truly stuffed 0 – 9 by Leicester on their own heap .
Bennet back in if fit Saiss or Kilman if not, Jota up front with Jimenez and we might just manage a draw, or even a win.
Seems like the Wolves tend to tie when I predict a win, and win when I predict a loss. Have to break that streak! No loss in form from Europe. Jota with 2 goals in this one.
Big brucie will be desperate to get running down the sideline with his fist in the air and questioning how we got Neves and co to play in the championship but he is going to be angry again I’m afraid
A welcome var advantage and a one goal win coming up
The sporting weekend kicks off in a few hours when the mighty all whites maul the all blacks
Come on England
Utw
Worrying that we were so ineffective against Southampton as they’ve just been stuffed 9-0 at home but think Newcastle will present is with 3 more points.
Leicester took no points against man utd and Liverpool this season. We took 4 points off man utd and man city. The fact we only drew with Southampton and Leicester beat them doesn’t really mean anything. It’s football.its on the day.
Of course. We are obviously better that the Saints. Just can’t help feeling it was two points dropped but I’m happy enough. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
Thursday was a classic game of two
Halves… somehow Nuno has to
persuade his starters to start!
I’m for an aggressive approach and an attacking selection… traore jimenez jota Plus vinaigre .sod it, play 12!
It’s about time we had a big score
My Geordie mate won’t even consider our usual bottle of whisky bet.. so let’s warm up
For Villa
We can win this and put them deeper into relegation mire.
My only concern for the game is the fact that we start against 112 men. That prat Friend is the ref. god help us.
If that dickhead plays it straight for once I see no problem in us taking all 3 points.
On team selection anybody but Jesus if Bennett not fit.
We start against 112 men?
That’s not fair is it?
We’ve only got a small squad.
I get the irony doog
SWING LOW SWEET CHARIOT!
Great play second half in Bratislava. It’s asking a lot to get a positive result against Newcastle in such a quick turnaround; nearly all the Premier teams are capable of achieving a good result on the day. However our lads are special at times and it is hard to bet against us. 2-1 win, I hope.
Two sides who struggle to create chances. 1-0 to the Wolves
So, Benny A S in the squad for tomorrow then?
I was all set to predict a narrow win, but just read that Boly might be out injured. That is going to be a big gap to fill with Bennett also out. Going for a 1-1 draw.
Would much prefer to see us play 3 up front in games like this, and I think the Doc/Traore right wing needs to be played more often as they are both so dangerous. Doc’s stability I think will also bring the best out of Traore. On the other wing I would like to see Vinagre in these games as he can take people on. Boly is injured apparentely which is a big worry with Beno out as well, Kilman one side Saiss or even Dendoncker the other, anything but Vallejo at the moment !
2-0 Wolves. Jota double.
Let’s hope we take a tip from the England Rugby team today.
They were superb! The All Blacks might have been the bookies favourites but couldn’t stand the pressure we exerted on them and in the end we absolooootly dominated them.
That’s it then lads. Get right in their faces from the off. Play with confidence, belief and passion. Show us the skill that we know lurks in our side, and the victory is there for the taking.
If Big Willy is out injured we might struggle a bit defensively (I’d give Kilman a shot if Bennett’s not fit), but Raul, Adama and Diogo can make hay against the Newcastle back line.
Let’s have old Brucie saying at the end of the game:- “Wuh can play bettah than that. Wuh really can. But I thought three goals flattered them”.
I predict a riot… Sorry, a win… For Wuh!
ROLL ON SUNDAY…
WILL NOT BE LIKE TAKING SWEETS FROM THIS TOUGH LOOKING BABY.
BEARDSLEY’S LOVE CHILD?
I’ll be happy with the same result as Thursday …. COYW
Early start tomorrow to get up to the home of …the Blaydon races and will also be honoured to be in the company of the Jetsetters…Stuwolf, Jen and the Lowves……. who will have literally pitched up from Bratislava…!
Whatever team we put out will be a tough nut to crack and even without Boly we should have plenty of attacking options to cause a toon upset.
Looking forward to a cooked breakfast on Monday at Bromto’s and would ask for brown sauce please on my eggs and bacon….
Official club latest on Boly and other player injuries:
Wolves head of medical Phil Hayward has confirmed that Willy Boly sustained a ‘serious injury’ in training this morning.
The defender is currently undergoing tests on a suspected ankle fracture and has not travelled with the rest of the squad to Newcastle for tomorrow’s Premier League fixture at St James’ Park.
Hayward said: “Unfortunately, Willy Boly sustained a serious injury to his left ankle in training earlier today.
“Initial tests show a fracture to his fibula, and he will undergo further imaging over the coming days to determine whether surgery is required or not.
“If surgery is required that will take place during the next week.”
Hayward also provided updates on a number of other injuries in the squad.
He said: “Ryan Bennett is recovering well from his adductor injury. He has now started outdoor rehab and he will return to training in the coming days.
“Pedro Neto has progressed well with his outdoor rehab this week and has trained with the squad ahead of tomorrow’s game against Newcastle.
“Bruno Jordao has trained for the last two days and is progressing well. We expect him to be fit for selection very soon.
“Finally, Meritan Shabani underwent surgery to repair his right ACL, which went very well with the surgeon very pleased with the outcome. He has now returned to Compton to begin his early stages of rehabilitation.”
Missing Benno and Willy is a huge blow. Difficult to predict how Nuno will adjust the defence, but I fear the reappearance of Vallejo. If so we’re doomed Cap’n Mainwaring, doomed I tell ye!
COMBs – prove me wrong!
Feeling like the team will have been comparing our outing against the saints to Leicester’s shellacking. Hope that motivates them to get some goals on the board.
Either Saisse to foll in but my gut reaction is possibly we could see Saunderson and kilnman either side of Conor . Anyway
Two all
Don’t know what foll means . I meant saisse or Jesus to start
Broken ankle……….Boly……..shit………he is going to be a massive massive loss this could effect our whole season he’s that important our best defender by a mile.
Jesus I’m afraid is not the savour this time the fact Nuno left him out the squad altogether against Batislaia confirms to me even Nuno has lost faith in him.
He’s going to have to look to the under 23’s this is one of the draw backs of having a small squad.
Every time I predict an easy win the results are…well, not to kind so I’m gonna change it up and see what happens with this attempt.
Terrible news re Boly, although fibula break is better than tibia and fibula both broken.
Cody + any 2 of Kilman, Saiss, Donk, Vallejo = a shambles.
I wonder if Nuno can conjure something up for the next little while without Boly & Bennet? 442?
Willy Boly is a big loss but this team has so often overcome such challenges. I’ll leave it to Nuno to work out how..
I’ll be more than hapoy with an away point.
Boly is a rock, and will be missed for however long he is out. With one space to fill all is not lost, but with two defensive gaps you would expect Vallejo to come in. I think against some of Newcastle’s pace in attack they will isolate him and score because of it. Nuno will know what is best to do. If he does decide against Vallejo and try something new, the lads confidence is going to be shot and a replacement might just be bought in jan. Happy with a draw under the circumstances today. UTW
I feel really sorry for boly as he has been excellent for us and most times this season motm or a contender for me. However, “ex tenebris lux” and I was really impressed by Kilman in his last 2 starts. Also, before we have to consider Vallejo, who has struggled so far, we have options with Saiss and I remember dendoncker playing away in a back three at Sheffield Wednesday in the carabao cup last season and being impressed how solid he was. We also have Sanderson who may be able to slot in. Sometimes even dark clouds can have silver linings. No point fretting as we certainly won’t see boly until the new year at the earliest and if surgery is required possibly March. COYW
Bad news about Boly 🙁
Going to be interesting to see how things are without him.
Austin Samuels has travelled with the squad, though probably for the experience rather than making it into the team.
Going for a win, narrowly though, and not scoring the winning goal in the 96 minute please, let’s wrap it up sooner because my heart won’t take it !
Should read Benny Ashley-Seal
Not Austin Samuels
Boly massive blow, and these days you have to factor in VAR in your predictions.
Absolute nightmare without Boly! Big shoes for someone to fill. This games got a draw written all over it
Gutted about Boly he’s the rock of our back 3! But we know both Donk & Saiss can play at the back plus Kilman – sorry I’m still not convinced by Vallejo!!
Stuck between a win or a draw, if I predict a win they draw & if I say a draw they win! So theoretically if I say a draw we should win. I haven’t a clue honestly!
COYW
I still feel we are a bit fragile at times, and losing Boly will add to that. Got a nasty feeling about this game, but hoping we manage a draw.
That’s OK. We have the U23s to cover for any injuries.
Big Willy out is a massive blow. At least I’ll be watching in the pub, so if all else fails, I can get absolutely marmalized.
Boly is a fantastic player both in defense and up at the front, and Bennet can be useful, but to think that a team like Wolves can totally collapse with two players unavailable is ludicrous.
Trust in Nuno and the rest of the team.
My cup runneth over, just back from the States and only missed one game shitey Hampton. Got a away tickets for Veela and Aresenal. Anybody know where we can watch the Rugby early doors near Euston Station next Saturday ???
The fringe players need to step up to the plate today and show us how good they can be.
Just listened to a lovely interview with Raul on Radio 5 Live.
Guess where he spent his recent week off?
Bahamas? Spain? Some Middle Eastern Millionaire Hotspot?
No! Driving round this country visiting places like Bath, Salisbury, Stonehenge and some Castles in England and Scotland.
And he loves living in Wolverhampton because he can go out to the cinema and restaurants without being hounded by the press and hangers on.
What a bloke!
Believe we can battle out for a point today, but not under any illusions how much tougher the next three months have become since the Boly injury. Time for the rest of the team and kids to step up.
Brave second half and in the end a decent point given Thursday’s heroics.Thought every substitution and Nuno’s half time tweak made a difference. With a bit more luck with finishing the 3 points the performance deserved could have been achieved.
How much short pull is a foul?Answer any, but not according to VAR. Clear and obvious penalty!
What is the point of checking for an infringement. There clearly is one. And fuckin VAR doe give it. What is the point. Get rid of it. Brighton got 2 extra points from VAR yesterday. We got fuck all. Again.
F**k VAR!
F**k VAR!
F**k VAR! F**k VAR!
F**k VAR!
Apologies for the language, but F**k VAR!
