It was almost 25 years to the day since Wolves last won at St. James’ Park.
Walter Zenga was still between the sticks for Inter Milan in those days and I doubt few victories back then tasted as sweet as this one.
Bludgeoned by Barnsley, it was difficult to foresee any combination the Italian selected emerging on top against a team who’d won their last five.
Yet that’s exactly what they did, sprinting from the traps, winning all the second balls and putting Newcastle on the back foot throughout.
It may have taken an own goal to force the breakthrough, but Wolves should have been ahead long before Chancel Mbemba planted one in his own net with half an hour gone.
Roman Saiss headed just over on an impressive debut, the fantastic Costa saw a shot blocked and Bodvarsson smacked the top of the bar as the away side probed and pressed.
Newcastle stepped on the gas in the second half but it was Costa who struck the decisive blow capping one of many driving runs forward with a fine curling finish to double the advantage.
Bodvarsson and Cavaleiro could have added further gloss as the Magpies became stretched and ragged in the final moments, but that wastefulness mattered little.
Comfortable in the end, but it could have been so different if Carl Ikeme hadn’t produced a world class save in the first half, palming away Ayoze Perez’s sweetly struck drive to keep his team on level terms.
Wolves’ undisputed number one also prevented a grand stand finish, repelling Aleksandar Mitrovic who raced through on goal and looked certain to score.
He wasn’t the only member of the old guard stepping up their game either. Matt Doherty was back to his best and a constant thorn in Newcastle’s side.
Batth, Iorfa and Edwards all turned in typically consistent performances to lay the foundations for the new intake to finally shine.
It shouldn’t be overlooked that this was the first league victory of the season from a team primarily made up of our summer recruits.
Six of the fresh faces made it onto the pitch and such a cohesive team performance bodes well for the season ahead.
Individually, all were steady to outstanding, with Helder Costa just about edging home for Man of the Match.
But Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was again instrumental, occupying the Newcastle back four with aplomb and routinely battering his way through.
It was his run that created the all important opener and he should again have scored a couple himself. Goals will come for the Icelander if his performances maintain this level of consistency.
New boy Saiss was impressive in the middle of the park, planting himself in front of the back four and helping to keep things tight. With the midfield looking flaky in recent times he could be the pivotal addition.
Rotation seems inevitable for the Groundhog Day League Cup fixture, but this XI must be considered our strongest in the immediate and at the forefront of Zenga’s thoughts for Brentford.
Although second guessing our head coach or the collective performance of this group of players isn’t something you want to waste your time worrying about.
Just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
* Highlights of the game can be viewed here.

Great team performance underscored this hopefully turning the corner win.
Great response from the chastened team after last Tuesday’s debacle.
Campbell Borthwick-Johnson is a classy player, you know you’re pretty safe when he’s near the ball.
Thought Dave Edwards was excellent, and Cavaleiro in his cameo looked to have that extra pace that could prove key in any sustained winning run.
Hope to see the same team & level of application v Brentford who won big yesterday.
The season under this new regime looks a hell of a lot rosier this sunny Sunday morning.
No good if a win against Brentford doesn’t follow
Sitting at a cafe in sunny Lincoln and feeling very contented. Thanks Wolves.
Smiles on faces performance and expectations must rise belief restored, least we forget that they spent 50mill in close season and we have in Saiss found the midfielder we need. This game will stay in the memory for a long time, especially through the bad period we seem to go through (November)this team reminds me of the Watford team that got promoted and make no mistake this was a title winning effort. They have invested well and Venga knows what he’s doing.Dicho is the missing link. But above all else how amazing are our travelling fans. From the first minute throughout the first half they sang their hearts out,and they were right when they sang “is this a library ” they with the team silenced 50,000.Geordies.
Fantastic. I just didn’t see this coming. There’s nothing like being a Wolves fan. Great write up Thomas
I agree with you Thomas, surely this must be the intended starting line up for the league games. The big difference for me was Saiss who has the most cultured left foot at the club since Paul Cook perhaps, his passing into space for the runners was a joy to watch.
The entire crowd watched in disbelief as the game unfolded, can`t believe even the wolves fans were expecting this.
Didn`t even mind the 13 flights of stairs out of the ground after the game, only wish the tremendous performance had provided more goals the display deserved. On this form Walter`s team can do anything they want to this season, I just felt so privileged to have been there to witness such an unbelievable display of grit, determination, no little quality and football ability.
Really enjoyed the walk back to Newcastle station, the silence of the home fans said it all. For once delighted my 1-0 score prediction was wrong, but who would have believed the final score was remotely possible, if someone got that right they can choose my lottery tickets for next week.
So glad that the lads proved me wrong.
So happy that my prediction turned out to be a pile of what Wolves played in the last ten minutes against Barnsley.
But I am not at all pleased at being accused of being disloyal for predicting defeat.
And I am not eating shit for doing it Mr Bucknell.
We are not governed by that nice Mr Putin, or the North Korean leader Egg Foo Yung or whatever his name is, so we are all entitled to opinions without having to be metaphorically lined up against the wall of the Steve Bull and shot for treason if we don’t predict a win every time.
It doesn’t lessen my love for the Wolves.
We’re all after the same thing on this blog – or should be anyway.
Back to yesterday’s performance.
In a word, BRILLIANT!
It looks like Walter has stumbled across a winning combination and perhaps should stick to it. In League games anyway.
Jon Dadi continues to boss opposing defenders, Edwards runs his socks off, Ikeme seems back to his shot stopping best, CBJ is coming on apace, Saiss could well be the answer to our holding midfielder role and everybody did themselves, and us, proud.
To close, a message to Amanda.
I have never been, and never said that I have been, a member of The Fans’ Parliament. I suggest that you sack your team of researchers.
And, can you desist with the continuous efforts at doing down fellow Wolves fans?
When you first came on the Blog it was quite shocking but now it’s just plain tedious.
You don’t need to do it. You’ve made several pertinent comments and are obviously knowledgeable about the club and have strong opinions as we all do.
Plus, you must have picked up a fair amount of dosh if your bet came up at 33-1 so it’s going to be your round at the next Bloggers’ Ballbash.
One last thing.
Clive doesn’t wear a toupee.
Do you think they’d sell any that looked like that?
I’m just surprised that you couldn’t seem to see the possibility of a victory, or even a tie.
That seems to indicate that you don’t know a lot about sports.
Teams have horrible and then great games all of the time.
Look Tim, I gave my opinion.
Of course I could see the possibility of a ‘Tie’? or a win.
It’s a PREDICTION LEAGUE. The clue is in the name.
I predicted that, on the balance of probabilities, given that Newcastle scored six in their last game and it could have been ten, and we had been beaten by four goals to nil, that we would lose.
I was wrong.
So shoot me!
Quite frankly I was surprised too DG, if not a little disappointed in your negativeness towards the team and if I’m honest
I’ve often wondered what you know about sports (even less about music).
I also noticed that you didn’t even forecast a ‘tie’…
Perhaps is because you can’t relate to these’modern type’ managers compared to say KJ, you know the driven, passionate
Ones that relate to the fans..
Be reprimanded you pessimistic old fuddy duddy
I stand erected mate.
I will forecast ‘ties’ from now on.
I’ve still got the silly one I wore at the last Bloggers’ Ballbash.
I thought it was a prediction league, not a ‘Who can vote the most positive Wolves result’ competition..!!???
Very well put and into perspective Kford…..
For Christ sake some of you others….ITS A PREDICTION COMPETION AND ITS FOR FUN….IF ITS TOO SERIOUS FOR YOU ….STAY OFF PREDICTING..!!!!
Mr DG As you said you’re entitled to your own thoughts and no thinking your team may well lose doesn’t mean you support for Wolves is any less, it may mean you were around when the Bhatti brothers damned near ruined our club. Thank goodness for Graham Turner and a couple of guys from a team that looks like Tescos, and frankly whom I have no care to mention. We bloody won, didn’t expect it myself either, but we did and like every other person that reads this blog it make my damn week and I have a huge grin on my face 3 days later. Like the motto you need the dark times to appreciate the good and we’re collectively due.
If you disrespect Mr DooGooder you disrespect us all. Keep up the good work all , and as Thomas said let this be the corner we don’t have too come back too onwards and upwards and to paraphrase Clive let’s hope we do the decent thing and stuff the Bees 5-1, can’t say I like them after Whitney Wharbutons comments when we won league one, and I know how to hold a grudge
I agree with you Thomas, surely this must be then starting line up as frequently as possible.
The big difference for me was Saiss whose cultured left foot and vision have not been seen at the club since Paul Cook`s days, his unrushed and sublime passing into space for his team mates was a joy to watch.
At my age I shouldn`t be walking up 13 flights of stairs to get to the away fans concourse, but it was worth every moment as probably nobody in the crowd expected this. I felt privileged to have been there to watch an awesome display of grit determination, and a great deal of excellent football, so proud of every player. On this form Walter`s side can do anything they want to this season.
Really enjoyed the walk back to Newcastle station after the game, the silence of the home fans said it all. They knew they had been stuffed well and truly, its days like this that you travel to away matches for, I`m sure there will be plenty more where that performance came from as the season unravels.
It was natural to raise questions after the Barnsley performance but its way to early to write Zenga and the new players off. Some may struggle to adapt but the indications from yesterday are that there could be some Gold nuggets.
Like ‘born to be wild’ steppenwolfe couldn’t see this coming.
Like the Doog predicted a 2-0 loss, but am absolutely delighted with the 2-0 win.
Like just about every other blogger on here got ‘Amandered’ (new verb) for daring to say Saiss
should start……..who’s laughing now.
T’is a good sunday morning and no doubt about it.
Now t’is all about Tues and next home match – and what Walt will do with squad rotation/fielding a settled side.
Magnificent effort all round.
Now, please Mr Zenga, confine your rotation ideas to the mickey mouse cup events. Changing all the eleven starters on Tuesday so that you can keep all the squad members happy is great — as long as you go back to yesterday`s line-up for next Saturday [ fitness permitting ] These guys deserve the chance to build on the foundations that were established yesterday.
Our future success must be entirely dependent on creating a TEAM, whose members, through selection and tactical consistency can develop understandings and confidence in each other and thereby play together as a winning unit. This victory at Newcastle should be seen as the start of our serious promotional campaign.
How can you say that after the victory against Newcastle, after a round of rotation. If all the squadmembers understand their responsibilities, they can all do a terrific job. Fresh feets are just as important. Who would you play on the wings? Cavaleiro, Zyro, Costa, Jordan Graham? Your conventional way of thinking is not what Zenga stands for, and his way is just as good as any other – if it’s executed in the right way – especially with such a packed program like the Championship.
In theory what you say makes good sense. But this assumes that all players are equally as talented as any other, and can be seemlessly fitted in and out of the side. But this is far from reality. The divergence in ability is marked.
My point is that historically successful teams over any season are those who retain the spline of the team on a regular basis. The players get used to each other. Relationships on the field are established. This cannot happen when the team is endlessly chopped and changed.
By way of an example, we have only to look at Wolves. Dougan and Richards were extremely talented individually, but as a partnership playing together week on week, they became a lethal duo. Same with Bull and Mutch. Similarly, a defense can only become truly effective when it solidifies into an effective unit, and this can only happen by playing with each other very regularly.
Rotation may be fashionable today, but it is not the only way. I recall that back in the day, one of the great Bill Shankly`s Liverpool championship winning teams went through a full season of some 50 odd games, and used only 15 players all season. They won because that wise old manager saw the huge benefit of allowing them to develop into a formidable unit. They became a team rather than just a group of talented individuals. There is a big difference.
50 years of following this club and I still haven’t got a clue as to what they are likely to do next. But few results in recent years have felt as satisfying – no, exhilerating – as this one.
On the other hand, I would take issue with the ‘this is our strongest line-up, don’t change it’ brigade. The team yesterday was set up to contain what was, on paper, a very dangerous opponent. The approach at home against less strong opponents has to be completely different, much more attack/creative minded. And don’t forget we still have the likes of Dicko, Zyro, Graham etc to come back into contention not to mention those sat on the bench and in the stands yesterday. It has to be a ‘horses for courses’ policy if we are aiming for the top 6. Still, I’m delighted and will be grinning all day today…
Walter
” there will be ups and downs but we have to continue to believe and go on with our journey ”
Brilliant reaction from the team and I’m so pleased for the fans who made it ,
No real surprise to me really , expect the unexpected ! I do think we have a habit of getting everybody bang on form though, brentford next utmw
The strength is in the pack
Really disappointed – a good opportunity to move up the prediction league and what happens – we score a second goal! How dare they do that to me!
However this was tempered by the fact I had a cheeky bet – 2-0 to Wolves- at the local Corals (in addition to the 1-0 forecast) so I am well chuffed on this sunny Bedfordshire afternoon.
Excellent result, so bloody pleased I really am – a mate found this little gem on a Newcastle fans site………..
““Well played Wolves – deserved to win – outplayed and out sung – nosiest away fans for years better than any Premiership team fans that have visited St James’s Park”.
Some praise for team and supporters.
Went to the local swimming pool at 8.00 this morning feeling on top of the world (only football can drop you from a great height and then pick you up and fling you to the top of Everest in a few days) to see if a couple of Geordie lads who had been forecasting a thrashing for Wolves were around. Strangely enough – no sign of ’em!
Going to REALLY enjoy roast beef and Yorkshires this afternoon – washed down with a couple of snifters of course (Chianti).
Have a great day bloggers and a great week and keep on smiling.
BOG
The bloggers comment s on Wednesday after yesterday’s game totally inconsistent.Slagging off Zenga and calling out the foreign players to be powered puff.i think you should think before you right your articles.
Two different authors mate.
I think you should read the articles properly before commenting.
Well I must admit that my hopes for the game were boosted when the team sheet was minus calamity Jane (Stearman) in defence and Buffalo Bill (Coady) in midfield – although I do think that the latter can do a job at full back from time to time.
It will be interesting to see whether the latest eleven start against Brentford and whether they are able to create chances on our very tight pitch.UTW
It just goes to show that even when we have shit loads of money behind us we can still get caught out with the way Wolves play..
Depths of despair then wtf…as in this case we virtually tormented a £50M league favorite in front of 52000 fans away from home no less.
If WZ can just get his head around this current team choice – presumably adding Dicko and Jordan graham then we really should be knocking on that PL door at the end of the season..
My endeavors here in begging for a strong half back line could now be tempered by a stronger defending midfield…..I have no complaints about conceding goals yesterday and I have to say Ikeme was also brilliant..
I personally think that we have to play Iorfa continuously beside DB and perhaps WZ has now cemented this..
DB in the post interview with his chest stuck out quite rightly gave it large prob with a V sign hidden behind his back to his critics – me included..
He couldn’t of got a better result than this away from home in front of a huge crowd..Saiss could well be his personal insurance who I thought gave much needed stability that the team needed..
.
I think this team keeps out Steers and (I really hope it does) ….- sometimes a team involves where players just start to gell and we seem at last to be doing this..
So,quite plainly if we can beat Newcastle away like this then we can beat anyone in this league..
We need points and I agree that re : Brentford and onwards we must keep this up..
Slip ups against the likes of Barnsley really must never happen again if we are going to make it..
I think Zenga is a Coach who is learning really fast except his ability to speak English lol
But who cares about that ..
COYW
I’m on a remote Greek island .. Take note Amanda .. When I wore my wolves shirt before and after the game …. Wolves fans all ages and from every where introduced themselves ( she thinks we’ve got no fans !! )
Anyway I knew wolves would win
What I wanted to say is that those of you calling for zenga to be sacked and saying stupid shit about mendes
Grubby little hands being on our transfer budged and signing shit like
Costa saiss etc know absolutely fuck all . Hang your heads in shame . You talk absolute bollocks
Make no mistake It does what it says on the tin !
Is it the Isle of Lesbos by any chance???
So you were ‘Tangoed’ then London in your ‘Hull City’ lookalike shirt. How embarrassing old chap.
Do,nt count Syrian refugees in ‘charity bag’ Wolves tops, confusing you wearing the same, near their Greek Island camps, as Wolves fans mister.
Wolves next welcome Dean Smith a Black Countryman from West Bromwich to Molineux.
Famous in Walsall and now the Brentford manager, who are above us yet again for the 3rd season.
Once again for the Wolves stand and forum investment experts, Brentford along with lickle Barnsley and Huddersfield, proof that a good manager does come before shed loads of wonga.
Dean Smith demands more of his Brentford side and describes performance in 5-0 win over Preston as ‘quite average’
My prediction of 6-0 win unbelievably could have come true!
We are a work in progress.
A friend of mine in France told me we had bought a gem when Saiss arrived.
Consistency is the key.
I’ve been a Wolves supporter for half a century and can honestly say, we have more potential now, than we ever had…
On current home form we’d be 17th whilst on current away form we’d be 4th.
Wish we were playing at Griffin Park next week.
Well done Batth and co, credit where its due he put in a commanding performance yesterday, please keep it up. We all want our players to do well and I think in Batth case we know he has those type of performances in him which is why I get frustrated with him. Stearmans admission was notable he is not the answer and never has been. Exciting thing for me is that we do have players at our club who when fit can come in and improve the team. The bus is rolling again now lets turn it into a steam roller Walter and win this league.
Well no sooner we get a great result than the trolls and doom & gloom merchants jump on bloggers who shall I say “dared to express their opinion on what they witnessed on Tuesday”, how dare you publish on this site that Wolves would lose.
What a load of Bollox, it’s a blog site for FS, where does it say you can’t express your own views or what you feel. Get real Barry Bucknall, some of these people on here were supporting Wolves since Stan Cullis were a lad, who are you to say they can’t say “we could get beat”. I predicted a 1-0 to Wolves but I’m not then crowing from the rooftops, they are all entitled to their opinions.
Back to the important stuff, great response yesterday after Tuesdays shit display, team held it’s shape and gave a good account of themselves in a thoroughly deserved win. Walter has answered Steve Showcase and my cry for a solid figure at the back, in Siass we have a calm, skillful, rock solid player who is the plug for the leak in the midfield / defence that we’ve been waiting for. This was the best performance from a Wolves side in two seasons, even better than the second half against Birmingham. IMO
Talk from the boot room…….
Apparently Danny Batth and a n other approached Walter after the Barnsley game and asked for some slack, he had put them through a 2 hour high intensity training session on the day of the game and with all the training on top, they we’re knackered. No arguing there…..
I want nail my flag to the keep the same team Saturday fans, but even though I’m making the long trek North again on Tuesday I don’t care what team he plays as the league is the most important thing for us. If we play Siass again I think he could keep the team together enough to gleen another win for us on Tuesday no matter who he plays.
I want to ask Fosun & Walter here and now, ” please find £7 – £10 million and buy Cameron BJ from United”, he is mint, a gem, a quality addition to our squad, he’s scared of no one.
Roll on Tuesday, at least we’re being given the bottom corner and won’t have the 13 flights of stairs up to the subbuteo table view, we are instead being given the lower tier in the corner. More noise from less fans echoing of the perspex walls.
Come on me babbies.
🙂
I honestly don’t think £7-£10mill would secure the services of CBJ Stu. However, I do think Fosun could afford him if they really wanted him and he wanted to come.
So you know everything then LwL? I agree with what you say about Zenga but if you honestly believe Mendez has Wolves interests above his own then you have a lot to learn about agents. There is no reason why Wolves cannot benefit from his contacts however but Fosun will be keeping thir eyes on him particularly as they have a stake in his business.
Richard Stearman.
All piss taking aside, a lot of us were miffed when he was sold, but then equally miffed when he was brought back.
And the big question I have is who made THAT decision?
If it was WZ, why was he dropped after a couple of games?
If it wasn’t WZ, who was it?
I still think he’s a good player, but if I have the choice of him in the side or three wonderful points in “When The Boot Comes In ” country, then the points win every time.
Shit eating grin on all day yesterday, and today.
This proves, together with Barnsley being stuffed by a team WE stuffed, that no match is going to be easy, not for us or our rivals.
With regard to the vitriolic tart, skulking on this blog, I would say this:
Firstly, you are getting me mixed up with Donald Trump with reference to hair pieces. As Doogle rightly says, who would make a wig as ugly as my hair?
Secondly, with regard to your extremely rare correct score prediction…..even Stevie Wonder occasionally knows when he’s finished wiping his arse properly.
Have a day, Armani.
FOwb
You know Clive, we have a big squad now, and I think it would be a bit premature to say that all those who didn’t make Saturday’s matchday squad have been ‘dropped’. Walt likes to rotate his players and my guess is we’ll see Stears back on the pitch sooner rather than later.
Captain Kirk of Compton keep your hair on.
No good being vindictive and jealous that you cannot even do what Stevie Wonder does occasionally then ?
Wipe your arse Ralph Coates.
And another week passes with neither Benik Afobe nor Bakary Sako kicking a football. Who says the green is always grasser?
Okay, so I was wrong….I thought Newcastle might score 1!
Enjoyed celebrating with betfred and a number of very sweet ales after the game though, accepting their donation of lovely 11/2 odds along with a few Wolves fans of similar ilk who know ‘the way’ of our all too errant club. As I’ve mentioned before, if there is a more contrary bunch than a Wolves team, I’m yet to find it, unless I make up an eleven of my lovely lady friends from down the years, maybe?
So, where do we go from here? Home to Brentford Nylons I read in the paper (unless we have a week game, of course). What team will turn up, who the hell knows? Just fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride. I doubt whether we’ll get 11/2 for a while though.
UTW
I got 13/2 with Bet365 !
As I was walking off the terraces a bloke was saying to his mate, I’ve just won £400 , I’ve just won £400 (fookin quid)
Go Wolves.
Great to see the positives on here. Think it’s natural to have a go when you’re disappointed after a poor performance. Thought they looked knackered on Tuesday.
Batth clearly benefits from a strong midfield presence in front of him. Fair play to him if he had a word in Zenga’s ear about overtraining.
Looking forward to see if we can continue the same at home v Brentford.
All defenders benefit from having a strong midfield presence in front of them Allen.
Listened to the game on Wolves Player and the thing I heard more than anything was the amazing din from the travelling support. Well done you lot. Very impressive and made me chuckle.
As for the game itself, tremendous stuff. Sounded like we played ’em off the park for long periods and that’s no mean feat at St James Park. Special mentions, from the commentary, go to newboy Saiss who protected the back four with aplomb, Dangerous Dave who made countless interceptions and as usual ran two marathons in 90mins and Helder Costa, our new wing wizard.Perhaps it’s unfair to pick out a few as there were eleven heroes on the pitch on Saturday.
Hope and expectation suitably rekindled, onward to Brentford. May be able to make it up for that one.
Oh, I predicted 0-1, but you can’t allow for own goals can you.
My sticking to predicting clean sheets finally paid off! Just goes to show if you say the same thing often enough eventually you are going to be right. Pity I went for only 1 goal. Agree with the stay with the winning combination group. With Saiiss guarding the back four clean sheets should keep coming.
Oh yeah – let’s drop the name calling. Starting to sound like kids in the playground
Well said Cotswold.
Let’s drop the name calling.
If we all support Wolves, more than our Ego’s, we’re all on the same side, Stearman et al.
Seconded Cotswold, kids stuff indeed.
Well said that man.
Fantastic performance and result.
Well done the Wolves
🙂
Well to say that was unexpected was an understatement. I predicted a heavy defeat whilst hoping for a point away from home, but a relatively comfortable 3 points will do nicely. However, as others have pointed out this result means nothing if we can’t get 3 points out of Brentford in the next game.
Saiss looked great in this one. Can Zenga find the formula to make performances like this one a regular feature?
I still think Newcastle will be the team to beat this season, if we’re around them by Christmas we’ll be in for a shout at automatic promotion.
On the Barnsley game Ben called it as he saw it which was very fair. He also raised the issues that yesterday were so successfully addressed what is wrong with that ? We are a work in progress.
On Mendes yes he is a football agent but he is one that has built his reputation on spotting and promoting players that can deliver. Its not in his interest for the football clubs he is associated with to fail. Anyway the jury is out on that one what we do know is its have a go at Doog week (just waiting for Mandy 69 to come back on and try and sit on his face).
I have, been giving my Newcastle mate some stick since the result, I predicted we would play well.and play with pride but a draw
I will.take the,win ha ha!
Need to carry it on now.
Fantastic result spoke to my brother briefly he said the atmospher was brilliant even though they were up in the gods, none stop singing by the 3,250 Wolves fans but 48,000 Geordies to shame.
Is seen the highlights and like I said spoken to my brother he was full of praise for the back four. Its no coincidence that we kept a clean sheet and Stearman was not playing…….his words not mine but I am of the same opinion.
Fantastic performance and one I don’t think anyone saw coming after Tuesday’s horror show. I suppose with so many changes a certain amount of inconsistency is inevitable.
But we do seem better suited to playing away. At home we struggle to break the opposition down and run out of ideas, thus bringing frustration from the fans. We work much better away where teams have to come out and attack us. It’s no coincidence our two beat performances were on the road at Blues and now Newcastle. Hopefully Zenga can sort it out at home – and stop tinkering so much.
But most importantly, what a day.
My humble opinion is that WZ has been giving players an opportunity. No pre-season. Arrived a few days before the season kicked off. Perhaps now he has discovered the basis of a ‘team’. Just a bit of tweaking here and there going forward. I think there will be a few more hic ups ad we go but i do expect us to find a consistent approach in the interim. I didn’t go yesterday but I want to thank every one of you who did. I was there the last time we won in 1991 when Tim Steel i think got the winner. Well done fans. Well done team. Well done WZ.
Well I predicted 2-0 but unfortunately like Andrew Preview I predicted all the right goals but not necessarily in the right order.
Amazing how we get spanked by Barnsley while Newcastle are spanking QPR then four days later we beat Newcastle in their own back yard while Reading (pronounced Redding Clive) who we beat comfortably go to Oakwell and beat Barnsley! As Greavsie used to say its a funny old game…
Congratulations to everybody who predicted a Wolves win. You obviously know a lot more about football than what I do.
Are ewe incineratin that coz I live over ear wiv a load of mericans, I cor spake propper, like wot y’all do?
Its spelt Reeding so that’s wot it is, like.
Well I hoped and predicted for a 4-0 and by what I heared on the Radio we should have won by more.
More than satisfied with the scoreline with some of the new boys playing well at last, but collectively played 100% better than Tuesday last.
Let’s not get to carried away with this fantastic result away from home but enjoy the moment and another 3 points come Saturday please ,PS I hope WZ doesn’t tinker to much and try to keep a settled side.UTW.
I I have been off air, but I have been to the Reading and Burton games. I wrote a long post after the Reading game which didn’t save on the site. Anyhow, I like WZ and the players that have come in are all good footballers. Jon Dadi, Tex and Costa have all looked good, there wasn’t much doubt that Saiss is a class player. I am in the “Stears is good” camp and we also have Silvi when he is fit. CBJ is top-drawer and Fosun may stump up – it’s a season loan, so we have time.
I think we will be Ok come the end of the season and if WZ rotates the squad that’s good. I would have been one of the first to spout the old cliches, but WZ always intended to use this large squad. He needed/needs time to find out what he strongest options are, it won’t take long.
Good to see you back ‘On air’ mate.
Always appreciate your comments.
Did spend time this morning reading through the Newcastle fan blog one of the few football blogs that can match us for number of comments. That we were the better team and well supported was said other than that it was largely bland stuff boring. A few lines saying the same thing just spelt differently. We are lucky to have so many characters on here i would even defend Johns right to come on and call us all a bunch of c***s. A good blog is its own moderator.
Well, I went for 4-0 Newcastle, but I’m delighted to be eating humble pie. I’m still not convinced by Zenga, especially if he continues to rotate the team, but time will tell.
On another note, that ‘Zenga, he’ll take us to the Premier’ chant is bloody awful. I hated it when Palace and Leicester started singing it and loathe it even more now. Just horrible.
A few thoughts about the game.
1. Many of us on here should eat humble pie after writing off Zenga and his team after the Barnsley capitulation. It was probably more about Zenga’s decision to bring off Iorfa for another attacking player that left us wide open. I questioned some of the Portuguese players motivation. After watching the game Costa, Prince and Teixeira worked their socks off (as did every one of the team) and it was just rewards for Costa to cap his performance with a great finish.
2. Maybe l am also wrong about Mendes. Bodvarsson we already know is a bargain at 1 million and has made a big impression. Roman Saiss if he can perform like that every week can offer protection to our centre halves where there is still a weakness. Don’t get me wrong though Iorfa and Bath were fantastic!
We have now seen what Costa can do. Tex and Cavaeiro have shown glimpses of ability too. To me the pick of the bunch is CBJ. He is the most naturally talented player we have. He reads the game well he is very composed and his passing out of tight situations was impressive. And no, there is no chance Man U will sell, l was surprised they let him go out on loan. Lets just hope he is not recalled after Christmas and we keep him for the season.
3. Zenga will probably play a different X1 on Tuesday and l suspect we may see Dicko making his return off the bench. However against Brentford WZ must stick with the same team. They were superb, other players must now fight to displace them. We need some consistency and Saiss must stick in that deeper role despite us playing at home.
4. As some as suggesting on here, we did not ‘play them off the park’ they had 68% possession! They played like we have been playing, giving the ball away too frequently. However. it was our constant pressing and getting crucial tackles in that meant in the end they just got frustrated and ran out of ideas. (I thought Diame’s was more a straight red than Anita’s to be honest.)
5. Finally Richard Stearman. Some people have short memories. He was our best player not so long ago as all the end of season polls demonstrated. It is bound to be unsettling being sold to another club then returning some time after. He is not the reason we conceded 4 at Barnsley. I still feel he will be an important part of our squad and he is Wolves through and through.
Anyway what a weekend to be a Wolves fan, particularly when you spend it with your mates that are massive Toon fans! Doing the double would be even better!!
How about the treble and also draw them in the FA cup – they would be sick of the sight of us.
I don’t many (any) fan on here who predicted a loss against Newcastle had written Zenga off. It was just a realistic prediction based on the last performance and result vs Newcastle’s blistering form.
I shouldn’t need to explain this!
I wasn’t referring to the predictions, but some of the negative comments some of us had written after the Barnsley debacle, including myself! We now have something to build on after showing up for the first time for the full 90 minutes.
It is particularly satisfying to read Newcastle fan’s blogs. I think they are more shell-shocked that we were when we lost to Barnsley. I predicted 2-2 against Newcastle so at least I got our goals total right! This victory will live long in the memory. And, it was achieved against the odds in a legendary stadium in front of 52,000 people. And, against a shrewd Champions League-winning manager. It doesn’t get much better than that. A sign of things to come.
Talking of predictions, I have no problem if anyone predicts a Wolves defeat in our Prediction League. It is meant to all about predictions. Thomas himself predicted 2-0 a loss against Newcastle. What I do have a problem with is excessive negativity. Zenga to me is a brilliant although rough diamond, but this Wolves job is his big chance, probably his last big chance. He won’t blow it. With Zenga we will have far more wins like the Newcastle one, than losses like the Barnsley one. Bring it on.
Manchester United will welcome any approach for unwanted German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, 32. (Daily Mail)
Now if Fosun want to prove to me that their ambition to make the Premiership is serious, pull out the stops and get this guy, stick him just infront of Prince and Siass then Bob’s your Aunty and we’re sorted.

Fosun, prove to me your serious about the Premiership, break the bank and get this guy. Walter, stick him in just front of Prince and Siass and watch our team soar.
If we do that, I will join Jeremy Henlan and find religion.
Who does this bloke Religion play for, and is he any good?
Nah, but he’s not short of belief.
He’s no good!
Been the cause of much trouble over many centuries.
Mmmmmm! Profound!
We had Jesus playing for us once ! Bastian would be a great addition can players still be brought in now the window is shut?
Only if they are out of contract, but in the words of the M&M twins, (one for the future) tie him up now and use him from January.
what a great christmas present that would be 🙂
