According to last week’s E&S bulletin, Wolves have opened the book on Bakary Sako.

Tim Nash reported negotiations are likely to ‘drag on’ and later stated on Twitter the club wanted a ‘repeat of last yr re Jarvis and Fletcher’.
A repeat of last year? Are you serious?
I would suggest that reviewing what they did last year and doing the exact opposite would be the blueprint for success, particularly where transfer policy is concerned.
The club were widely lauded over the generous sums pocketed for Jarvis and Fletcher, but the ‘we don’t need to sell’ pantomime was a major cause of the double-dip.
Holding out until the last minute for those bigger windfalls is typical of the club’s recent approach, which is to say ‘finance first, football second’.
The coffers were swelled by a few million quid, but it severely effected Solbakken’s ability to shape his squad. He’d have struggled to replace the influence of those players with a whole summer to go at, let alone a few days.
That to me was a major lesson that needed to be learned this time. Has it been learned?
As far as Sako is concerned, I would be straining every sinew to keep him at the club, however difficult that might prove to be. Operation Deadwood has yet to commence and I’d hope getting rid of our worst players would take precedent over selling our best.
But if there truly is no way he can be retained, even if we offload a lorry full of the no-hopers, I would sell for an acceptable fee at the earliest possible opportunity. Give the manager adequate time to reinvest and mould his team.
Meanwhile, poor old Leigh Griffiths appears to be staying put, which at least signals some intent from the club to hold firm over a want-away player.
Many believed Wolves only took up his additional year in a bid to rake in a transfer fee, but today’s quote from Jez Moxey seems absolute: “There is no offer which can be made at this time that will change our minds.”
I should hope not.
There’s another comparison to be drawn with last year in the case of Michael Kightly. The club thought getting the dosh was a better option than making him play out his contract. They were wrong.
Griffiths, arguably a greater asset than Kightly given our predicament, must not follow the same path. He has scored goals at an impressive ratio in every side he’s played in, at a standard that won’t be any worse than League One.
Even if he leaves for nothing in a year, having failed to score a single goal, so be it. At the very least we’ll know the club made a decision that had the best interests of the team in mind.
We haven’t seen many of those recently.

Agree completely. Well said!
I don’t think M and M have learnt one bit as you say finance comes first. What they should be doing is bursting a gut to get rid of Doyle, Johnson, O’Hara the big earners that’s where we can make or should I say save big money what ever we get for Sako and I agree they should lay the law down with him and make him see his contract out it will mean nothing if they don’t get rid of the big earners.
Thomas
You can bet that any fees received for Sako and Doyle, plus fees for any of the dead wood that we might just possibly be able to sell at knockdown prices, will mainly finish up in the Bank of Morgan, the same place that the residual £20 million from last Summer’s transfers is sitting. Subsequent to last year’s fiasco, admirably summarised by your good self above, not one penny was spent in the January window despite the looming threat of relegation (it couldn’ happen to us, we’re too good / too big to go down).
The way this Club is being run (into the ground) is worse than incompetent it’s scandalous and the financial machinations stink; it’s nothing more than a sophistcated Bhatti operation.
And please no replies from Morgan / Moxet lovers that we “couldn’t do a Portsmouth” because we could.
Back up your claim that Morgan is taking money out of the club with hard facts and figures.
He has made some very poor decisions, but there is no evidence he is taking Wolves’ income.
Hershamwolf
Look at the relationships between WWFC Ltd. and other Brigemere owned Companies, particularly Wollve Properties Limited and then you may see why the football operation (Wolves FC 1986 Limited and WWFC 1990 Ltd.) are so starved of cash. All the Club’s assets (ie. Molineux and Compton) are owned by Wolves Propeerties Ltd. and profits from the football Club have been reallocated to pay for infrastructure projects; if he chose to do so morgan could put the football club into administation tomorrow and maintain control / ownership of the assets through Bridgemere Investments.
Think this was addressed by Morgan in the last Parliament’s meeting? At least with Redrow he said something along the lines of ‘it was illegal to do it’…
Hamlet
Not sure what you are referring to here as I am not one of the 100? “Parliament members” who are supposed to be representative of the thousands of disenfranchised supporters whose only voice is through forums such as this. Suffice to say that I have never accused anyone (including the Bhattis) of anything illegal but legality and morality do not have to be mutually exclusive.
What “infrastructure projects” and exactly how much of the “profits from the football Club”? Please give hard facts and figures.
Hersham, I don’t think we should be worried about him taking money out yet.
Let’s concentrate on his failure to fulfil a promise to a knight of the realm to invest £30mil!
He hasn’t!
Unless I should listen to the powers that be rather than published accounts.
I have no concerns about Morgan taking money out of the club, I’m certain this isn’t happening. I am challenging unsubstantiated allegations.
I will agree that Morgan is too tight-fisted but can someone please explain to me how back-to-back relegations would be more profitable to the board than Premier League stability? That’s what I find so hard to understand about all this talk about Morgan/Moxey greed!
You can accuse them of incompetence and bad decisions, sure, but any talk about them making more money by losing TV licenses and home game fans baffles me!
If you are a builder and you get a football club plus property for a tenner, (plus your promise of £30m investment), then you build property not a team.
This is what Morgan has done and as PJB points out, quite easily.
The football club becomes secondary to owning the property…
So…Morgan buys Wolves to build a new stand?
If his main focus was bproperty, wouldn’t Morgan…I dunno, focus on businesses that build property? Redrow etc makes a fine profit without any need of profit from Wolves
Hamlet that is too simplistic.
He has built much more than a stand.
He has built luxury homes, developed Compton…
He owns the ground.
If the football club went into administration, as PJB points out, Morgan can retain the assets through Bridgemere.
The land value of WWFC is fiscally more valuable than Sako.
You get a small house in West London for Sako’s value.
So this is all a convoluted plot to profit from engineering administration for the club? Paranoid conspiracy theorists please step forward with your unsubstantiated rhetoric.
Hersham Wolf
You’re starting to sound like johnwolf with phrases like “paranoid conspiracy theories” and “unsubstantiated rhetoric”.
If you want some substantiation then let’s start with the well documented £12 million taken from the football club operating profits to finance the rebuilding of the Stan Cullis. And the whole Compton project involves foggy wheeling and dealing between Morgan’s Companies, Wolverhampton Council, The University, Green Belt Land etc. etc. (property development not football).
Then there are the questions of the accumulated profits from 3 years in the PL and residual transfer profits (£20 million) from last summer sitting in a bank somewhere whilst ” the best run club in England” suffered a second successive relegation plunging it into a potentially catastrophic financial situation rivalling the crises of the ’80’s. Not one penny was made available to Stale or Saunders to attempt to avoid this impending disaster. Why is the football club so starved of cash given these circumstances?
I am not an accountant and neither do I (nor I suspect anyone other than a chosen few) have access to the behind the scenes cross company financial dealings of a web of organizations effectively owned and contolled by Steve Morgan, but to expect comprehensive substantiation is akin to asking how Google is able to avoid (not evade) UK tax. As you yourself quoted Morgan “if it’s legal do it.” I have previously stated I have never accused anyone, including the notorious Bhattis, of acting illegally and I am sure that Morgan has an array of lawyers and accountants who ensure that he stays on the right side of the line.
Then of course there is the often asked question of the £30 million unfulfilled CASH INVESTMENT pledged to SJH, a genuinely honourable man, in exchange for a tenner and his £40 million debt write off again highlighted by kwolf above.
You are entitled to your (in my view naive) opinion that there is nothing amiss with the finances at WWFC but please allow those of us who don’t agree the right to exprees our opinions without being accused being conspiracy theorists and paranoid.
I know an opportunist when I see one and this one arrived at Molineux in 2007.
“…£12 million taken from the football club operating profits to finance the rebuilding of the Stan Cullis.” Using club money for a club stand, criminal!
“…whole Compton project involves foggy wheeling and dealing between Morgan’s Companies, Wolverhampton Council, The University, Green Belt Land etc. etc. (property development not football).” Certainly a foggy statement, as it says nothing of substance, like the rest of your epic post.
I think you will find that the quote you accredited to me was in fact from Hamlet’s post.
Finally (I’m pleased to say), to liken my comments to those of another poster is disingenuous at best, showing a lack of appreciation in differing content and style.
HershamWolf
2 points to take up here.
Firstly , what is Compton if not a property development?
Secondly, a much overlooked point is that a football club generates positive cash flow which can be a very useful asset as part of a group of companies where liquidity can often be in short supply.
Are you saying: that the Compton (housing, I presume) development has been paid out of club funds; that club generated “positive cash flow” is being used by other companies in the group?
Could, I think we are half way there all ready and as someone else pointed out a least they had an F.A Cup win as a consultation. We had F.A and shit football.
With regards to Sako the problem from my view wasn’t so much that they were sold so late as it was that Solbakken thought that they would be staying – if Moxey and Morgan had told him they were trying to drive up the price as much as possible he’d have been looking to replace them whilst they were still here – if we are to sell Sako Jackett needs to be told straight – or rather, Jackett should already know this.
As for Leigh – damn straight he should be kept here, he’s proved himself and it’s time for him to step up!
I can’t help wonder what the issue was with Griffiths for him to be loaned out since signed. No doubt of his goal scoring ability when motivated and happy. I just hope that transfers to being back at Wolves as he seems to have some personality traits which may prov eto be disruptive.
Whatever, we shouldn’t look to a single player as the solution, Both Torres and Carroll were meant to be fantastic League changing signings and look what they did for Chelsea and Liverpool. Closer to home Johnson was the rock that would stabilise our defence and was immediatedly gifted the best contract at WWFC with the Captains armband…..Nuff said.
A balanced team with competition at every position is mandatory for League 1 as it will be a long tough season and injuries will be a constant issue, which may or may not have been a factor in last seasons demise.
“There is no offer which can be made at this time that will change our minds.”
There are 3 words in that statement Thomas that make it worthless, “at this time”. I don’t think Moxey will hang onto him til his contract expires and he goes on a free and it doesn’t sound like they are going to be offering anyone big wages which and he won’t sign a new contract without that. Keep him upto Christmas, hope he scores a load to increase his value and sell to the highest bidder in January will be Moxey’s plan. And if he gets a bid big enough, i wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone before the season starts.
Yes, it certainly looks to be the intent. Someone mentioned finance before football. Yes it is definitley the case and looks the same again.
Where the whole thing goes wrong and we have seen it before. If LG goes straight into the team which I am sure he will, than regardless of performance you can count on him keeping his place regardless.
Watched through Leighs goals on youtube think he will have little trouble scoring in league 1 looks a born finisher if there is such a thing.
I was initially scathing of Kenny J but having reviewed his record, particularly at Millwall where he had NIL budget, he had them punching way above their weight and I think he may be the right pragmatic appointment for where we are now. However, he has a hell of a job as there very little evidence of a team at Wolves for a while now. Just a collection of individuals trying or not trying and seldom working together. This latter point finally gets me round to the points in Thomas’s blog. Again Thomas, you have provided considered astute thoughts, but in some areas I differ from your views. Players like Sako and co, yes we would love them to stay, but if they want to go and don’t want to be at Wolves ( and I include Griffiths in this) we may as well capitalise on them (also as an aside, although Sako is good in a very poor team, this was relative and I believe in many ways he was not as good as Jarvis, particularly with regards defensively and discipline). What we need now is a TEAM, devoted to Wolves, hungry and relishing the opportunity. A hungry Wolf is keener than a bloated satisfied one who knows where its next meal is coming from. I say, if they don’t want to be here, for whatever reason, let them go, but here is where I agree with Thomas, the funds gained MUST be re-invested in the team. Kenny will not build a team over-night (and bear the poor bugger is nearly going to have to start afresh, as possibly Hennessey, Foley, Johnson, Ward, Berra, O Hara, Henry, Griffiths, Doyle may go. Hunt and E Blake have gone. I believe we will start poorly this season but get stronger and stronger towards the end as the team gells. having said that, failure to make the play offs, given our size and budget, should be considered a failure.
I just wonder why we are looking at a Burnley reserve, Paterson, when we have Griffith, Siggy, McAlinden and Cassidy. . . . . . . unless we intend selling one of them.
I hope our ambition stretches farther than Paterson.
Forgot to mention I agree that we need to keep our best players and sell the poorer ones – surely that is a given????? Probably would be at most clubs. At ours selling seems to be dictated by how much money we can get rather than how it will benifit the team long term. Success on the pitch would appear to come after finance when they should be linked. The way to make money is to be in the prem – not sell our best players.
Only defence I’ve seen in this is that with Doyle leaving the front-line needs experience…mind you that rumour is baseless at this time!
Your blog was spot on, Thomas.
Why does history keep repeating itself at Wolves? We’re in danger of relegation so we sack the experienced manager and appoint a rookie who hasn’t a hope of keeping us up. This has happened in two successive seasons. Now, we’re not considering offers for Griffiths, just like we didn’t need to sell Fletch and Jarvis this time last year. But if Hibs are knocking at the door, Griffiths is bound to have his head turned. They’re his boyhood club, they are based in the part of Edinburgh where he grew up, and he loved playing for them last year. Moreover, he’s never played for Wolves. We could insist on him fulfilling his contract but if his heart’ s not with us I can’t see it working out. No, this talk about not listening to offers is Moxey’s plan to drive the price up eventually.
I fear the next striker to go will be Sigurdarson, probably on 31st August. That’s probably why we’re interested in Paterson, and apparently also Leroy Lita. But I hope they will at least give Cassidy and McAlinden a chance.
Very apt title for the latest blog Thomas.
I’ve seen less surreal things happening in a Marx Brothers film than have gone on at the Molineux recently.
I’m sure that Groucho Moxey believes that his constant attempts at witticisms are hugely entertaining, when all us fans wish he would turn into Harpo and SHUT THE F**K UP!
A couple of points.
I’m resigned to the fact that Sako has to go, which I reckon is OK as long ‘Strait’ can re-invest the money.
I can’t think why we are looking at getting a striker – surely with LG et al we have enough here to do the business in Division 3.
It’s a solid defence and creative midfield we are in desperate need of.
On another matter, I have received a reply to my application for the post of Head Coach.
It was from Paul Richards – Head of Safeguarding & Supporter Liaison. (?!)
My fellow bloggers will no doubt be devastated to hear that I was not successful, and that all the jobs that I promised some of you will now not be forthcoming. I hope none of you handed your notice in to your present employers.
It was a very polite refusal and it seems that it was mainly the fact that I don’t hold a ‘Professional Licence’ that precluded me from at least getting on the short list.
Still, it was good of them to reply to what could could have been an idiot’s application….
…what do you mean?
At least someone must have read my letter and been made aware of the points I was trying to put across.
And on balance, Kenny Jackett probably just had the edge.
‘Still, it was good of them to reply to what could could have been an idiot’s application….’
I have sacked my proff reader!
Sorry, that should read ‘proof reader’.
I knew Proff. Reader, he was my maths teacher all those centuries ago when I was at my approved school.
A player is not for sale from greasel is like I wont invade Russia from Hitler…inevitable.
Further proof that greasel started World War Two. And I bet his ancestors had Germanic roots, and bombed our chip shop.
Bastard.
In fact, all the problems of the world can be laid at his door, he is that fat, greasy and obnoxious. The “man” is a weasel, a slimeball, a snake oil salesman all rolled into one.
How can someone who is proud of the slithery name “jez” and “moxey” think anyone will believe anything that spurts from his lips?
Makes my skin crawl just to see his brylcreemed photo, fuck me, that went out with the ark and the brown ball.
He is a pathological liar, and all our assets will be sold before the season starts, as “offers too good to refuse” come in, and we will be left with the shit who dragged us down over the last two seasons.
Put yer money on a third successive relegation while that fat stinking pile of dogshit remains in charge.
Mark my words, I have spoken, and I am, for once, as sober as Roger Johnson!!
Excellent Clive agree with every word.
The man is a cancer in our midst.
Clive, you are a little ray of sunshine on this blog.
Always happy, cheerful and positive….
Thank you!
Much appreciated!
Please don’t be down hearted at being turned down. Despite not having the pre-requisite of a PRO licence, there is nothing wrong with your ability to highlight our deficencies and what is an easy solution.
However, talking of vacancies that are currently unavailable (or should that be useless), what the hell does the ‘Head of Safeguarding & Supporter Liaison’ do?
Supporter Liaison?????? Since when (counted in decades, not months, weeks or days) has the Club liaised with the true stakeholders in the Club? Since when have the supporters really mattered anymore?
Some very good points being made here. I think the big question is not who will be sold but how much will be invested back into the squad! Based on the past 2 seasons that’s why I’m worrying, I fear very little! We all know who needs to go & who we should keep, sadly I’m not sure pieman would agree with us on this. Personally I would love to see Griffiths stay & keep hitting the back of the net, but as some folks have already pointed out, will he play if his hearts not in it? We need young hungry players who are proud to wear the gold & black & who will play their hearts out to get wolves back where we belong. Maybe I’m worrying over nothing here but it does appear to be finance first & football second. I do hope I’m wrong! We shall see!!!
Good article.
I see Coyle says he turned down 7 or 8 offers before accepting Wigan.
Am sure one was from Wolves and he rejected it.
Is Griffiths that good ?
He was great for Hearts, just as Cassidy was leading scorer last year in Div I, till we called him back.
Moxey says he was a ‘sensation’ for Hibs…
How come we didn’t get him back to save us from relegation?
Sako has to go, money before football is the moxey mantra.
We are in a mess whatever way you look at it and our ceo is in the thick of it.
Hope he gets assassinated!
Robin
Quite right on all counts.
I think we can be reasonably confident that Coyle turned us down, but then it’s becoming quite common for established managers / coaches to find that after interviews they don’t share Morgan’s “vision.” But at least we know that our revered CEO shares the “vision” so the top brass are all singing from the same (but wrong) hymn sheet.
As you say the whole thing is a complete mess. The Club is consumed by greed and personal agendas.
The owner is only interested in using WWFC as a vehicle for property development and personal gain. He lost interest in investing when the Council quashed his ambitions for commercial development of Molineux and the surrounding area by refusing to let him have the freehold in March 2010.
The CEO is only interested in balancing the books to ensure he “earns” his massive bonuses; he has now emulated his “achievements” at Stoke by taking the Club from the first to the third tier of English football but I think managed it motre quickly.
A group of “senior” “players” who are only interested in milking their lucrative contracts and are fireproof for the next 2/3 years whether they play or not.
An array of amateur backroom advisors who are probably enthusiastic but just not up to the level required.
I honestly don’t believe that the slide will be arrested until Morgan, Moxey, Thelwell, Weaver, Daly, Johnson, O’Hara, Ward, Henry and Edwards have all departed. But who knows how long that will take and where we will be by then doesn’t bear thinking about.
Good luck to you Kenny Jackett, I hope you are treated better than Stale Solbaaken was, but I doubt it. Rest assured you will receive very little financial backing.
Spot on analysis PJP
I have wanted griffiths and others to be given their chance when they could have saved us. Like our last 6 months in the prem theire were players despactched on loan i thought could have helped us. A few goals from Griffiths last season could have saved us. Why doesnt our CEO see this?
All the build up with griffiths know is just for our benefit, which ever way you cut it it makes little sense.
Unless I am missing something the best we can hope for is that he fits right in and scores goals to help us to promotion. Chances he will resign with us are slim to none whatever happens. If he is successful and Mozey cashes in in January as he will, then we can all see the problem. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet to create some Football success. I am seriously doubting we will see him next season. Please Moxey get on with the clear out and give our new coach a half a chance to settle his team in.
Hate to be like a broken record, but come on we are talking about selling our best player,,,A. If we can afford to keep him we should,,, get rid of four crap players with lower fees…Jamie ohcantbearsed for a start get the wage bill down take a gamble on the elite youngsters we have paid a fortune for and sprinkle quality amongst them…sako, Murray, Edwards foley (in league one), griffiths (in league one) and then forget about short term cash revenue…ala fat man saying whilst rubbing his considerably bloated fingers that griffiths will fill the coffers like fletcher… And go for it with passion and pride.. Realise we are in league one and respect the division for a season…get out and we can think positive again, fail and ok we sell and rebuild with youth. But please let’s approach a season with a winning mentality again..oh
And for fuck sake sack the fat man for a brighter future
Lickeywolf .. what you say is not like a broken record. It’s good football practice NOT TO SELL YOUR BEST PLAYERS.
Fergie didn’t shift out his best players , even if they got itchy feet, he told them to knuckle down and get on with it. There is no doubt ( FOR FOOTBALL REASONS OR FINANCIAL FAIR PLAY RULES) that we do not need to sell Sako.
HOWEVER .. that fat git runs the football club from a pounds and pence point of view and will sell our crown jewel without hesitation. Selling SAKO will mirror last year’s farce and put us treading water before a ball has been kicked. ..I fear that our downward spiral hasn’t ended yet if this is our strategy.
Get rid of the deadwood first.
Including Moxey!
You are right and that is the problem, “the fat git runs the football club” and he hasn’t a clue about football. Of course we shouldn’t be selling Sako – we’ll need him if we get promotion which is what we MUST be aiming for.
Because the fat bloated greedy idiot knows jack about using common sense to run a business he is and always will be an account…value of nothing and cost of everything is all the twat knows
Sack the fat man for a brighter future

Looks like Crewe selling another youngster to the Prem……Ok i wont go there they’ve talked the talk lets see if they can walk the walk….BRING IT ON !

The Griffiths question really revolves around whether he wants to play for us.
All I’ve read tells me he’s happy in Edinburgh and plays well there. He ain’t happy in Wolverhampton and will be troublesome
I’d sell to Hibs now.
Still no sign of the dead legs leaving. I can see the first team at PNE containing at least 9 players who played more than 20 games for us last season.
THere’s indications in recent articles he’s happy to play here – Jackett called him up personally remember!
I recall lots of overpaid bodies on the pitch a lot of times, but I don’t remember many actually playing.
And to continue the Phil Collins song title theme…” I don’t care anymore” !!!
Unless you have got the right people in charge taking the club and the team in the right direction individual players are an over valued commodity. Our broken backed club is still rammed full of players that cost a lot of money and are paid top wages.
Has anybody else seen this bit from the Daily Mail about the Financial Fair Play Rules:-
“Wolves have been in discussions with the Football League over the issue and believe that they will be compliant.
It appears that players who signed contracts of three years or over are exempt from the calculations.
This means the likes of the Black Country club’s top earners – players such as Jamie O’Hara, Roger Johnson and Kevin Doyle – all of whom put pen-to-paper during the club’s spell in the Premier League, will be excluded.”
Can’t wait to hear Moxey’s excuse for getting round that little inconvenience. No doubt he’ll say it makes no difference cause now we’re in the 3rd tier we have to cut our cloth accordingly.
Those players excluded? Great just what we need. I think if Johnson every pulls on a Wolves shirt again the fans will most likely lynch him! Clear the crap out, none of them are worth the time, money or effort. If they performed we wouldn’t be in the position we are now!
Yeah, fair point. We don’t want them anyway, we just want to flog them but we’ll probably have to give them away.
Just seen the fixture list.
Really brings home where we have fallen to.
Never been so depressed.
Not looking forward to next 12 months at all.
How can we fail to attract top players, and how can we think our overpaid wankers will not perform at their best when we have some mouth watering local derbies coming up?
Walsall, Crewe, Port Vale and last but not least…Shrewsbury Town!
My heart is all a flutter at the thought of entertaining mighty Crawley soon, together with an upcoming trip to Morecambe.
I don’t know if I can stand the excitement.
Mmmmm Doesn’t quite roll of the tongue like Honved, Real Madrid, Dynamo, Man U, Chelski and so on.
E xcitment? I am excited. Not because we are playing Crawley or Walsall etc but come
X mas time we will be top of the league having won all our games!! We thought that in the

R eally must take a look at himself and even better take a look at the job opportunities in the

M iserable times in the 4th Division. I have been unable to buy a season ticket because of my

N ow go to as many matches as before, not because of the division we are in but because I am
T ired of that big fat greasball that is our CEO. You can see what I think of him!! UTW, FOWB.
He has to go,,,cant believe hes stayed… someone come up with a fuck off moxey song for us all to sing
Sigh!!! You’ve upset me now Clive. I was hoping you’d put me up for a few days and show me the delights of Houston.
As it is, the thought of watching the overpaid wankers at cold and uninviting grounds such as port vale is so enthralling, I might have to forego flying over the visit you mate.

Excellent Steve, very good – and spot on sentiments as well!!
So Wolves intend selling their stars, oh those must be the players who got relegated two years running. If any of these can be considered as stars, then who by? certainly not by any clubs looking for new players.
Now if SEB and Hunt have gone, surely there is room for two young and hungry players already.
Other contributors have said what comes first, finance or football. Well, apparently the year of our first recent relegation when we exited the prem, the club made £9.2m profit. For me that says it all, that £9m invested in 3 or 4 decent players may have kept us in the prem, but its clear evidence – if any was ever needed, that finance comes first, and football a poor two relegations later.
One other observation – it seems that now Threllwell is now the official spokes person for the club, replacing that moron Moxey. AS to who actually writes the script its anyones guess. I fear Moxey is being shielded by our new head of football recruitment. Lets hope he just now does the accounts and keeps his fat greasy hands out of the football side of the business.
if the club EVER really intended to get a PROPER director of football he would have been a man with years of experience in the game. I feel the same as you in that morgan has ok d thellwell to act as a shield to moxey. it all looks and sounds VERY amateurish and is making me question the man morgan. until moxey goes it will be as if the club is stuck on a roundabout making the same mistakes over and over.
Hope when the players get back. Mr Moxey is not using the loophole to keep certain players eg. our over paid ex premier players, who of course had no part in our demise. I notice the club are being quoted by the E/S that player need to be moved on the make room for new players. The club need to move them on quickly or a new season we will be stuck with them. If it needs to cancel contracts so be it. We have the chance to create a new era at the club. Hope for the fans we take it and not go down the same route as the last 3 years.
I have just been sitting eating my lunch and reading the Telegraph Sports pages.
I was chewing my toast and marmite when I got to the column written by the excellent Oliver Brown and I suddenly began to feel much happier.
There’s us, thinking that we’ve got the fattest and most obnoxious slob running any football club in the world.
And then Newcastle appoint someone ten times worse.
I expect, on hearing the news, Pardew said “You’ve got to be jokin’ ‘ere!”.
Haway the lads!!
Despite being desperately depressed about our current predicament I was hoping our demise to league one would at least see changes at the club (and I don’t mean the whipping boys ie: our previous 2 managers). I was hoping against hope Steve Morgan would see it is not all about money but the need to speculate to accumulate in modern day football.
All the talk through the club means little to me as with many of you it is like listening to a Middle Eastern tyrant – plenty of rhetoric but no substance and little truth.
The thing that really got to me, really worries me and to be honest makes me feel physically sick is Moxey’s latest comment – “I think we know what we are doing” in reference to the two promotions since 2003. Jez are you joking? I have always believed you feel Wolves supporters are beneath you and from the comments of those who have had dealings with you I understand you can be aloof and patronising but you have got to be having the laugh of your life! Some of us share boardrooms and we understand your style of rhetoric, we hear it every day and quite frankly it is mostly a method of creating a smokescreen to disguise bigger issues. You have proved you know nothing about football – football by the way is the product of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club just in case you need reminding. The product you have resided over for 13 years is out of date, fails in the market and does not meet the description as laid down under trading standards – YOU HAVE FAILED MR JEZ MOXEY! 100%, absolutely and categorically in terms of your product.
Those who choose to support your methods including Mr Morgan do so because they share your lack of product knowledge. Succinctly put they don’t know what they are talking about in football terms! Now commercially you have some attributes – but again the most commercially productive earner is revenue from the football team i.e. being in the premier league. And you have failed miserably to secure this highly lucrative commercial contract – so are you even any good at the commercial side? Probably not – do the decent thing and go – your comment re “we know what we are doing” for me was your final idiotic statement – who are you trying to convince? Ring up Steve Kindon and ask him to recite his favourite poem to you – it’s called ‘The man in the Glass’. After digesting it and listening to it a thousand times, as it will take that long for you to understand as it is about personal responsibility. You should then decide it is in the best interests of WWFC for you to go. Then and only then will our great club begin to climb back up the road to recovery! You have had your chance just like McCarthy, Solbaken and Saunders or have you also changed your name to Jez Teflon!!!!!!
I absolutely agree with all of this, particularly the point about the need to speculate to accumulate. They started well under McCarthy when they stopped buying over the hill has-beens and actually made quite a few decent to very good signings at the right age. What they should have done then was improve on that steadily year on year after an annual objective appraisal, particularly when we arrived in the PL.
Weakest positions( left back for example!) should have been identified and dealt with when they found a suitable improvement. The success of all this depends on having the right manager, a comprehensive world-wide scouting network and a Director of Football to make all the important footballing decisions.
McCarthy would have been replaced probably sometime through our second PL season ideally with the DOF appointed at the same time.
During the past 3 or 4 years the likes of Ward, Edwards, Henry, Berra and others would have been sold with their stock at their highest and largely at a profit. Increased sums would then have to be paid on transfers and wages to attract the next level of players in the general upward spiral of the club, joining the ones who had proved their worth like Jarvis, Kightly etc. If they were serious about PL status they needed to operate at PL level, and it aint cheap. One or more of those new players you are hoping will eventually attract offers from top clubs too good to refuse. You take the money and re-invest at an even more ambitious level.
This is gradual evolution and would depend on the right people in all the critical senior positions(including a good CEO looking after the purse strings admittedly). Success can not be guaranteed but it can be done as our dear neighbours and others have shown.
Decisions have to be objective and professional, not based on sentiment. Far too often poor decisions were made based on loyalty to managers and players, at the expense of the team, the results and the long-suffering fans.
I agree with you, Tuba there’s no sign of any real change. An Academy Director with a new title and a determination to do things more cheaply coupled with a safe pair of hands in the manager’s seat now called head coach, hardly fills me with confidence.
Jackett may well prove to be a very good appointment and we will start the climb back to where we were 4 years ago. How long that will take, who knows. What i think is clear, whatever Moxey says, is that we had a golden opportunity when we arrived in the Premier League and now, as our Division 1 status confirms, we blew it big time.
