In Steve Morgan’s post-relegation statement there was one paragraph in particular that stood out from the rest.

“It is the younger players who will play an essential part of the team going forward. These will be supplemented by recruiting new players for the challenge ahead. I confirm that funds will be made available for this purpose within the confines of the new Football League financial fair play restrictions.”
From our chairman’s defiant words, two questions immediately came to mind:
- What exactly are the Football League financial fair play restrictions?
- What are the implications of these restrictions for Wolverhampton Wanderers?
In this article, I’ll answer the first question and attempt to shed light on the second.
Financial Fair Play
Clubs in League One must simply comply with a Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP).
This means limiting the amount a club can spend on wages as a proportion of turnover. For the 2013/14 season, a League One club can spend no more than 60% of it’s turnover on wages.
As a rough example then, if a club makes £20 million (from parachute payments, player sales, ticket sales, TV money, etc) then they can spend no more than £12 million (60%) of that money on wages.
Any club that fails to comply with this rule will be hit with a transfer embargo. The Football League state that they’re aiming to enforce this ‘at source’ meaning an embargo will come into force immediately when a club goes beyond the 60% threshold, not retrospectively.
You can read the full literature on Financial Fair Play on the Football League website here.
Parachutes and early birds
If a club can only spend 60% of it’s turnover on salaries, surely Wolves are immediately at a huge advantage?

After all, we’ll have easily the biggest turnover of any League One side, thanks to a £16 million parachute payment we’re due from the Premier League.
Additionally, with over 9,000 supporters signing up for an early bird, we’re already guaranteed to be one of the best supported clubs in the league, given that only 5 League One clubs had an average gate of over 9,000 last season.
When you add in shirt sales, sponsorship deals and other commercial initiatives, our financial might for 13/14 will easily dwarf that of any other side competing at our level.
It’s difficult to say what our turnover will be, but based on the most recent accounts (as discussed in this Fans Parliament meeting) I would conservatively calculate it’s somewhere in the region of £25-£30 million.
One big problem
You know what I’m going to say already.
Our current wage bill is widely reported to be £25 million.
That figure would account for a percentage much higher than the permitted 60% of our turnover for 13/14. It might even be 100%.
This does nothing more than confirm what we knew already, Wolves must trim the fat.
High earners, expired deals and easy wins
On the playing staff, our biggest earners are reported to be Roger Johnson, Jamie O’Hara, Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt.

By offloading just these four players, as much as £6.5 million could be shed from the annual wage bill. This alone would go a long way towards bringing us in line with financial regulations.
Stephen Hunt provides the easiest solution. His contract is up so the club have the option of offering him a new deal on more suitable wages or just letting him walk away.
Doyle will likely find a club, meaning Wolves not only get shot of his salary but also pocket a transfer fee. Double bubble.
Roger Johnson’s stock couldn’t be lower, but Wolves would likely give him away for nothing just to get his wages off the books and Johnson himself would probably take a pay-cut to end his Molineux nightmare.
O’Hara provides the most considerable problem. His terrible injury record and ongoing fitness concerns could make him unsellable. Would a termination be viable?
Outside ‘the big four’, there are some other easy wins.
Christophe Berra will walk for free. Ebanks-Blake could do the same. Jody Craddock will retire after a season in the wilderness. Their combined salaries would recoup another chunk. Loan signings like Peszko, Robinson and Gorkks will also go, further easing the burden.
By contrast, McCarthy stalwarts like Henry, Edwards, Foley and Ward are all tied to contracts on reasonable wages. If offers don’t come in, all could survive the summer coup.
Learning a lesson
Cutting wages isn’t the only way to comply with Financial Fair Play of course, there is a second method – boost turnover.

And by far and away the easiest way to do that is by selling your best players.
Get £5 million for Bakary Sako and the immediate financial picture looks much brighter, easing the pressure to offload others.
But one would hope Steve Morgan knows better.
Selling your top performers (like Fletcher, Jarvis, Kightly) isn’t just a bad exercise in fan PR, it’s also short sighted in a financial sense, moving the club further away from a return to the riches of the Premier League.
These days, Wolves realistically have just two jewels in the crown. One of which is Sako and the other is a player yet to even make an appearance – Leigh Griffiths.
The Scottish striker has been in red hot form for Hibernian and will attract interest. But is it worth cashing in on a player that could easily spearhead a promotion charge?
Surely the emphasis must be on getting rid of the players we don’t want to keep, rather than sacrificing those we don’t want to lose? Keep quality, cut quantity.
If that means rejecting good offers, turning down transfer requests and defiantly making want-away players honour their contracts, then so be it.
Buying power
Spending big on transfer fees isn’t a problem. The Financial Fair Play rules for League One only cover wages. This is a significant development.
If Steve Morgan wanted to give his new manager (or head coach) millions to spend on new players, he could.
As long as Wolves even out their wage bill so it equates to less than 60% of turnover, they can flex as much financial muscle as they like to secure an immediate Championship return.
Conclusions and takeaways
Despite the many details, it’s really a simple equation: get rid of the big earners and deadweights and the financial advantage we’ll have over our League One competitors will be gargantuan.
I’ll finish with my top 7 rules for financial and footballing success in 2013/14:
1. Get rid of the top earners as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Preferably sell Doyle, Johnson and O’Hara, but get them off the wage bill by any means necessary that doesn’t incur significant loss.
2. Sell any of the other players that have contributed to our downfall if offers are received. These include but aren’t limited to: Henry, Ward, Foley and Edwards.
3. Allow Berra, Craddock, Hunt and Ebanks-Blake to leave for free. The latter two could be offered deals on reduced terms if the new manager so chooses.
4. Return all loan signings to their parent clubs. In particular, do not contemplate signing Kaspars Gorkks.
5. Do not accept any offers for the club’s best players. Our best players consist of Sako, Griffiths, Sigurdarson and Hennessey.
6. Should any of the above players request a transfer, reject and block by any means necessary.
7. Assuming steps 1 to 6 have been executed successfully, invest money in new players to fill in the gaps around our best young talents and top performers.

I agree with most of this. We should be at a massive advantage and anything other than promotion will be considered a failure, we can’t really afford to hang around this league either..
I can’t see us keeping Sako, there’s just no way he should be playing in League 1 and I think we will sell early so that we can get that out of the way. A mistake we made last summer was holding onto Fletcher, jarvis so late. Sure we got an extra million or two but did it hinder our preparations?
and btw, excellent blog!
the same could have been said when we started life in the championship … ive said it a thousand times and i wont stop saying it – moxey must go, or nothing will change for us.
Concise and informative Thomas, our situation in a nutshell, agree with all of your points with the exception of Sako. If sold for the right money he would ease our problems considerably, also if a player is being courted by premiership clubs, will he give is all in the third tier, not sure. I also believe there was an over reliance on Sako last year which was to the detriment of the team play, I would much prefer a youngster or Hunt if he takes the pay cut on the wing.
I take your points on Sako Dave, but here’s my problem…
How many times have we gone down the road of simply cashing in?
We did it with Henri Camara after our first Premier League escapade and we repeated the trick with Fletcher, Jarvis, etc last season.
Where did it get us?
How about giving the opposite a go for a change? Make our most talented player stay, whatever his opinion on the situation, and see what happens.
If he wants to throw a tantrum, put in a transfer request, go on a strike for a few weeks, let him. I would wager good money that when the time comes to play, he’ll just get on with it.
For the record though, I don’t think this will happen. I think Sako will indeed be sold at the first sniff of an offer with the club claiming victory for the fee negotiated.
Thomas, I think you are right, he probably will be sold at the first sniff, and it would be nice if the club didn’t sell their best players. But the mind set I’m in at the moment is to have a complete clear out with exception of the youngsters and Siggy. A complete re-build, Sako to me was good but not in the same class as Fletcher and Jarvis. However, if we get rid of Doyle, Johnson and OHara there may not be such pressure on selling Sako, trouble is, he will probably be the first one who will attract an offer. Not sure if Moxey will have the nerve to see if he can off-load three big earners first.
excellent blog Thomas – two thumbs up!
Agree re: Sako M & M just won’t be able to resist selling and that’s been the fundamental problem there’s no one putting the argument for keeping him ie putting the football argument for keeping him as apposed to the financial argument which has won out time after time. M & M have never thought of the footballing consequences or so it appears of selling our best players we should be building the team around Sako, Cassidy, Batth but I don’t hold out much hope who ever the new ” coach ” is I think the first thing Morgan will tell them is we’re selling Sako so dont bother making any plans envolving him
I agree totally Thomas on your initial post,i suggest you print it out and send ASAP to Steve Morgan for his eyes only.Don’t let Moxey see it.
Everything you posted on your blog is what i would like to happen with the addition of
OWEN COYLE.UTW.
There’s got to be an understanding when you sign a player what’s on offer. Bakary Sako is 25 and reasonably thought a year or two in Championship and then a shot at the big time, hopefully with Wolves. At 29-30, a chance with a big club and silverware, maybe. He’s got a career and probably 5 years to get to a PL club. Just because we’re lumbered with Moxey and Morgan shouldn’t mean his career should go down the pan. I’m sure we’d see it in his performances as well.
We’d all love a loyal Steve Bull, but I’d be surprised if a Malian Frenchman or a Scot will prove to be our hope.
A very interesting and well thought blog Thomas. It puzzles me how revenue can be easily assessed since if we’re doing well our gate receipts would undoubtedly be higher. Which would give us another plus over our rivals.
This leads to several KEY issues.
1) How crucial it is to appoint the right man to manage the team and who is allowed to bring in players that will make a difference .. NOT THE CHEAPO’S that MOXEY will be looking for.
2) The promise from THE BOARD that no player will be sold if it is not in the best interest of WWFC. I will watch this with baited breath coz I firmly believe that selling Fletcher, Fletch, Jarvis and Kightly was a big factor in our demise.
3)We keep the likes of Sako,Hennesey,Doherty, Griffiths regardless of the lure of selling them.
To me the financial restrictions won’t have that big an effect based on our fan base, parachute payments, other revenue streams…IT WILL BE THE STRANGLEHOLD, WAGE CAP AND INTERFERENCE FROM OUR CEO THAT WILL BE THE BIGGEST ISSUE.
I hope that Moxey will trim the club overheads drastically and allow the real money to be invested in the team rather than try to break even carrying the current costs.
Top blog with great info Thomas, thanks>
I think it boils down to two things:
1. The new manager/head coach will be key to success.
2. Can we trust Morgan and Moxey to do the right thing for the club? Past experience would suggest otherwise!
I really have no idea who will be in charge for the new season and will not be holding my breath for anyone noteworthy. I think that will be key for us and our challenge for promotion. I’m desperately trying to stay upbeat about everything but it gets harder by the day!
UTW
Thomas,
It can’t be that sales of players are included in turnover but purchases are not. Teams would just sell each other players for high fees for a month and then sell back.
I believe player sales are excluded from turnover.
Your analysis of who needs to go is correct but I don’t think Johnson will take a pay cut (I know I wouldn’t) and I don’t think he will leave unless Blues come in for him.
Doyle’s record as a striker looks abysmal ( never scored more than 12 in a season ?). I think he is now seen as kings new clothes man.
On O’hara I agree with your analysis.
And if you know Hunt is out of contract then that’s an easy win.
I also agree that Mick’s men won’t go.
If this is how it pans out then we will have to offload a lot of 2nd level players and that will include the likes of Griffiths, Batth, Doherty etc.
I hope your scenario comes to pass; I hope the club keep us in touch with who is leaving.
Still hurting and still worried.
I thought you might have a bit to say pferde, seeing as you’ve long been predicting the apocalypse 😉
Turnover by definition is sales, revenue, money in. It has nothing to do with money spent.
Therefore money spent on players doesn’t come into Financial Fair Play.
Remember, the rules are there to stop clubs going into financial meltdown. If Wolves have the money to spend on transfer fees from cash in the bank or Morgan himself, they’re free to do so as long as the wage bill is in line.
League One and League Two are unique in this respect compared to the Championship and the Premier League.
Whether Johnson will take a pay cut or Doyle’s goalscoring record is up to scratch is up for debate.
My gut instinct is both will go though. We’ll just have to see.
But having looked in more detail, I don’t think the picture is as grim as you’ve suggested in recent comments.
What about signing on fees, because if that’s not included then clubs can get round the wage restrictions by paying a player a signing on fee that in reality tops up his weekly wage but in a lump sum I don’t know if uefa have thought of this, is it a loop hole ? I don’t know does any one else know.
Can’t we just sack them?
Surely paying Johnson, Ward, O Hara, Henry etc to f…. off is cheaper than keeping them?
Their ‘presence’ in a dressing room must be a real downer.
How will a new Manager, (sorry Head Coach), bring any form of optimism to his squad if they are included?
It is cheaper to pay them off in the long term.
Get them out.
They are like a cancer.
Good article Thomas.
What about Boukhari, Doumbia and Margeitter?
you forgot Moxeys massive wage surely he has to go as well?
Unfortunately Moxeys wage has no bearing on the financial operating rules in Div 1 .. it certainly does on the club’s fixed overheads which frankly cannot sustain such obscene money for the incompetent mess he’s contrived to put us in..
However, according to League 1 rules, Moxey will now only be able eat 60% of his own body weight in pies… That should save us a few bob. Not sure how this will affect turnover though…
even if we signed no one, but got rid of that fat sack of shit, i would consider it our most successful transfer period to date …
We all talk about the Football League Financial Fair Play Restrictions without really knowing what they are (I certainly didn’t know) so thanks, Thomas, for the information.
Your seven rules also look very sensible to me and I am also sure the club would go along with the first four. However, I can see Moxey now crossing out nos. 5, 6 and 7.
Good detailed financial analysis Thomas but i’m just worried sick about who they might bring in. All the bookmakers have now slashed
there odds on McClaren this afternoon i despair.
3 players are on their way already: http://www.ipswich.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=319192
I’m sure Mick would take on O’Hara also. He and Fletcher was easily our best players. He’s a very good attacking midfielder when he’s in form.
If we can rid ourselves with our oldest players the relegation will serve a higher purpose: building a new team – finally. The previous chelsea players Zola and Poyet are flying high now a days. Their team plays good football. If we only could get hold of an ex-chelski player to manage our team… hint hint: Roberto Di Matteo
OH God I hope this Ipswich rumour is true. 3 dead wood in one stroke of a pen
I’d send them for nothing.
Tell MM he can have Johnson as a free gift too !!
If only Moxey could work this out as well as Thomas, but l fear he will pick all the wrong options and we will spend 59.9% of turnover on wages and get relegated due to a leaky defence, non existant midfield and an attack that can’t score goals.
Quoting Thomas:
“If Wolves have the money to spend on transfer fees from cash in the bank or Morgan himself, they’re free to do so as long as the wage bill is in line.”
As Morgan has a reputed personal fortune of £400m+, it would seem he could pay some transfer fees out of his own pocket without breaching Football League Financial Fair Play Restrictions? If he did this, it would help restore some of his credibility with us long-suffering supporters.
Oh well – it was just a thought
An excellent blog, Thomas. Logical and succinct. Thank you for taking the time to research and present it. If SM does finally see sense and part company with our esteemed CEO, perhaps you should consider putting in an application?
Excellent report Thomas. I watched the Fa cup and wigan’s squad was alledged to have cost 12 million. Their football, playing out from the back, quick movement, running angles, creating space, was light years from the dirge wolves have played. I can’t emphasise how bad it’s been. Its amateur. No two ways about it Solbakken and Saunders had to go. The team improved not a jot and got worse. There was no organisation style or substance or even chest beating throwing myself in to the thick of it passion. Nothing. So where am i going with this. Well yes, Doyle, henry, ward, foley, berra, johnson o hara well have to go. Not because they are bad people, but they are the heart of the team and the heart is tired now, time for a transplant. I would not be unhappy to see doumbia go as he is not trying, and edwards because of his sick record, he is not the worse player. Hunt could go to, not had guy or player but terrible injury record.
If he stays it should be on half wages again or pay per play, otherwise go. This is a whole team!! So most important point, a new manager, he must have time to pick, acquaint himself and organise players. At the moment i would say go for owen coyle, he is as good as mick, and getting back to where we were before is a step in the right direction. This would then give us the fhance to judge promising maagers such as davis or robinson, over a period of time rather than a snapshot. So coyle in charge, hennesey in goal, robinson, baath and a new ball playing centre half, a new right back as the present one gets skinned to easily, davis and three others in midfield, mcalinden and siggy up front. Poor siggy he neds the ball played to his fet then he looks a quality player.lets try and emulate wigan, swansea et al. We are bigger than them we need to be goverened as well as them!
I don’t see the FFP as an issue personally.
Get a decent squad of players together on whatever % of wage/turnover ratio.
Accept the transfer embargo, win the league with our squad from the start of the season.
Job done.
What about suing Messrs Doyle, Johnson, O’Hara and Hunt under the trades description act? No way are they worth even £65,000 pa collectively. Disgraces!
Interesting article,Thomas. The thing we have to do above everything else is’ buy well.’ Easy said. The budget needs to be controlled by sensibly pruning of the high earners as you suggest, and cashing in wherever possible eg Sako and Doyle.I still think a Prem club will spend nearly £2m on Doyler. He would be a useful squad player for a no of clubs.I don’t see us making any money out of Johnson and O’Hara ,in fact it will cost millions to negotiate pay offs.To be fair to Jez Moxey that is an area where he excels. On top of that we get one more year of £16m parachute money. We must spend well what is available .we need a new core of up and coming players.Above all we need a talisman striker .If they minimise expendiure on buying new players, like they did last season, then we will miss the chance to bounce back. Then we will be back to cutting again the season after, when parachute money drops to £8m. Whatever happens in the next few weeks ,whoever is manager or chief executive,we have one real opportunity to rebuild our broken football team.We need Steve Morgan to release the maximum funds possible and then we need to’ buy well.’If we don’t ,and rely too much on the kids ,we could be stuck in the third division or worse for years.
Sorry Thomas…it’s Moron and Greaseball we are talking about.
They will try very hard and in the end lash it up.
They always do.
Top stuff Thomas.
I’m surprised you can even write a blog never mind keep the quality flowing… I can’t open a newspaper at the sports section!
My concern is that if we don’t get promotion in year 1, we lose 8 million of turnover the following year (parachute).
If we spend the full 60% of turnover next season and don’t get up, we will have to trim 4.8m of wages the next year… so we would need to lose significant players from a team that was already not good enough to get promoted.
Ash, you are quite right. Wolves need to plan for this eventuality now.
Great analysis Thomas – this was an extremely interesting read.
If only Morgan were as sensible as you that would be a refreshing relief, however I’m not sure he’s going to follow your 7 steps to success.
They already have form of selling want-away players, so I would expect the crown jewels to go ASAP.
Perhaps Sigurdarson and Hennessey would stay , the former as he’s so young and the latter as he’s injured.
Here’s hoping we can finally enjoy some football now (not that I have a cat in hell’s chance of seeing any now)!
An extremely well written blog, Thomas, you have surpassed yourself.
For me, the easiest and most sensible thing to do is let all out of contract players go, and sack the old guard.
They have proven themselves disruptive and useless, and no doubt will do so again if they stay.
If they stay, they will still get paid the same amount as if they are sacked, and will cause problems, so why not just get rid immediately, and not have the disruptiveness?
Sadly, this suggestion, along with those above, is a sensible one, and when have those two dickheads ever listened to, or acted upon, any sensible advice.
Once again, while the cancer is still there, the club will slowly die.
The prayer line remains open………………..
yeah clives right …if any of the poison is put in the team next term it will be like groundhog day !!
Excellent blog and difficult to disagree with any of the analysis. The “7 steps”, however, will likely fail at Step 5 in respect of Sako at least; he’s just far too good for where we’ve ended up. I suspect that Hennessey, too, will be difficult to keep at the club.
PS. Talking of star players, n’er-do-wells and excessive wage bills: what’s happened to Ben?
Thanks mate. You’re probably correct in respect of Sako too.
As for Ben, a combination of being stacked with work and personal commitments as well as feeling less than inspired by events around Molineux have all contributed to his absence.
But fear not, the maestro will return. We had a pint on Friday and while whipping me at pool, he signaled his intentions to put something together.
Excellent read Thomas which i found very useful.
The only problem with your 7 points is they are based on clear, sensible, logical thinking and with only the best interests of the club and team at heart, with no hidden agenda. Unfortunately, our beloved CEO doesn’t operate like that. If he did, we might be established in the Premiership now instead of heading for Division 1.
Last year he boasted that we didn’t need to sell players and then sold all the good ones, conveniently when it was too late to use the money. Twelve months on and the club will have to get rid of the ones we paid plenty of money for, on the cheap, and good ones that fans would like to keep. That is a disaster and the man responsible is still running the club.
I don’t foresee any change in our fortune until Moxey goes.
This is excellent journalism Thomas, well written and well informed.
And it’s cleared up a few facts that I wasn’t too sure off.
I have decided that when I am finally appointed ‘Head Coach’ in the not too distant future I would like you to act as my consultant – unpaid of course, I’ve got to save money you know!
I’m still waiting for the reply to my application but I’m sure it’s in the post.
Here’s a thought. If Steve McClaren gets the job do you think he’ll adopt a Black Country accent during press conferences?
On another subject entirely, all of you who were so devastated when I said I couldn’t get Glastonbury tickets can stop grieving on my behalf. Thanks to the present Mrs DOOGooder’s connections with famous people we now have tickets in The Hospitality section directly between the main stages!
This is where all the media people and a load of top celebrities hang out – I wonder if I’ll see my best mate Jez there? (I’ll carry a poisoned pie with me just in case).
I’m starting to get a bit worried. Two things on my Bucket List are being ticked off very quickly: Clapton at The Albert Hall this Friday and The Stones in June.
I wonder if God is trying to tell me something?
Well done Mrs. D!
Don’t worry, DOOG, there are no plans for your demise until you have had the pleasure of meeting me, and buying me a pint!!
That’s so spooky!
That was another thing on my Bucket List.
…Except it was your round.
Clapton …idlove to have seen cream doogster
I saw Cream play several times.
Wven met Clapton when he was living with Alice Ormsby Gore, wonder if anyone remembers her?
I certainly do.
Tragic end to her life.
Clapton made it through all the substances – she didn’t.
Alcohol killed her, after her brothers suicide she went to Harlech.
Her parents gave her a caravan on their estate, where she drank herself to death.
Clapton, for all his famed substance survival, is not a very nice man.
Certainly not from my meetings with him.
I DID manage to get tickets for Sabbath though at th 02 🙂
Nice one OG’y.
Never got to see Cream.
Seen Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker separately – on Friday I’ll have the set. Not quite the same but about as near as I’ll get now.
Did you see the Jack Bruce Band?
Ronnie Leahy, old friend of mine, was his keyboardist.
His old wife divorced him, married Richard Branson and is now a Lady!
Not bad for a Glaswegian….
Crickey its turning back to my Rock ‘n Roll years.
Saw them all.
Remember the Who?
Their first performance of Tommy was at Mothers in Birmingham.
I was there….
1st Galstonbury price of an entry an LSD trip….
What happened to Wolves????????????
Hi robin.
Are you still in contact with Mr Leahy?
I saw Jack Bruce with his Big Blues Band last year at the Komedia in Bath.
Got a video on Youtube of him doing Sunshine of your love.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxzxPft9k-A
Ginger Baker I saw in Bristol twice – once with Ginger Baker’s Airforce and once with The Baker Gurvitz Army (fabulous band!).
I’ve followed The Who since they first drew breath. Seen them about a dozen times live – the first at Midnight City, a long forgotten club in Digbeth, Birmingham and the last at Glastonbury a few years ago.
I made a 24 track with Ronnie and what remained of Joe Cocker’s Greaseband in the 80’s. I knew him from the early 70’s. He did quite well with Nazareth who I’ve never heard. Apparently he has given up touring isn’t very well and has gone back to Glasgow.
excellent blog well done,
IF ON THE OFFCHANCE KEVIN THELWALL IS READING THIS BLOG AND YOU SHOULD BE,STOP MINCING AROUND AND GET OWEN COYLE AROUND THE DISCUSSION TABLE.
Mincing being the operative word….
There will be some players, of course, who will consider playing in Div III (League I) to be beneath them – superstars Johnson and O’Hara fall into this bracket. Berra also apparently believes himself to be of Premiership standard (excuse me whilst I try to stop laughing). Ebanks-Blake is still a more than capable striker at Championship level and will be sought after as will Sako after his excellent season. Doyle is widely admired by many clubs if only for his work-rate. All of these we will make wages savings on when we lose/get rid of them.
The remainder of the squad, with the addition of 3 or 4 decent players and even if we lost a few more (Hunt/Griffiths/Henry ?), should be more than capable of making a push for promotion at League I level. The real problem is, as Ash K says above, that if we fail to get promoted then the parachute payment the following year is cut by £8 million – so turnover will be reduced (and hence spending on wages) at a time when the club will need to strengthen the side.
Which raises the question, does Moxey have the vision to plan for two very different scenarios two years in advance – (a) a team freshly returned to the Championship (b) a team still in League I needing strengthening but in which turnover is reduced and therefore the wage bill must be cut again ? History would suggest not.
Wolfman .. you’ve overlooked scenario 3
Relegation to Division 4 !! (Thats plan SO … codename for Shit oneself.)
The “Unthinkable” has already happenned this season – and with these 2 clowns running the show it is more than possible it could happen again … I have no faith in morgan, I have no faith in moxey I have no faith that any of the pig-headed suits at WWFC have a fucking clue what they are doing … Hire another manager, Fire another manager, who fucking cares we are only going one direction with the shower of shit running our club.
I agree with what you suggest, Thomas. If only M&M had the sense and grit to take action like that. But I fear that all this talk of “massive changes over the summer” and so on is just that: talk.
They’re saying what they think we need to hear. Naturally, who wouldn’t. But how much of it can possibly be true? Why would they change things around so dramatically? They didn’t when we were struggling in the prem. Or when we went down from it. They don’t know any better. Why would they NOT sell our best players now? They don’t know any better! Stubborn people who are way out of their depth don’t change things for the better. They panic and make rash decisions that are weighed by pressure from a larger part (us). But we’re stuck with them. They call the shots and they’re staying. I don’t think we’ll go down another tier, but I don’t think we’ll go back up in year 1 either. They’ll fumble around in the dark trying to get used to another tragic footballing situation they don’t have the first clue about and we will mull around in League one for a few more seasons. It’s a dismal picture, but this is just another episode in the long-winded fight against 2 rich, stubborn men who think they know what they’re doing. They’ll have to leave eventually. It’ll just take another couple of years for it to happen.
My only hope is that they SOMEHOW manage to land a decent head coach, but then again, if they don’t, we’ll be rid of them quicker in the long run.
Just seen a tired pretentious looking geezer hanging round the car park under a brolly, looks a bit familiar.
Just as long as we get rid of jamie o hara, everything will be ok.
What about suing Messrs Doyle, Johnson, O’Hara and Hunt under the trades description act? No way are they worth even £65,000 pa collectively. Disgraces!
You see I have said this for ages. Sack them they have not done the job they are paid to do, so however you look at it they (The Players) are in breach of contract. With Morgan’s dodgy mates and contacts and money he could get away with it. Sorry it was all a dream.
Roger Johnson’s stock couldn’t be lower, but Wolves would likely give him away for nothing just to get his wages off the books and Johnson himself would probably take a pay-cut to end his Molineux nightmare.
Dig up some of my past comments on this pratt, I was on his case from two games in USELESS
Two games into his Wolves career? If so, I think that’s a tad harsh.
I was at Ewood Park for his Premier League debut and the following home game against Fulham. He looked like a purring Rolls Royce and every inch the big money defender we’d long been crying out for.
Performances went downhill after that and he never came back after the roasting he got from Shane Long at the Hawthorns.
E&S have done bit of an airbrush on MacClaren in each of his last 3 jobs he has only lasted around 6 months – but i wouldnt wish the fate of Nigel Doughty on anybody.
His stats is impressing but I would prefer Kenny Jackett before McClaren. Kenny Jackett has done well with limited resources for all the clubs he’s managed. Both know their trades. I suspect McClaren’s CV might tip it in his favor.
I totally agree with everything said. How about my idea to raise even more revenue and give the wage bill even more financial muscle. How??? Use our biggest asset, Molineux Stadium. We all think we will probably have 15000 fans at home games that leave some 15000 empty seats, empty earning capacity. How about we take the ideas from the Mighty Byern Munich and reduce seat costs. It’s simple, slash the prices and the masses will come. The more people the more revenue. Extra shirt sales, extra advertising budgets, extra refreshment sold it’s a win win situation. If Wolves reduced cost to £15.00 for an adult ticket and say £5.00 for a child the stadium would be bulging. Morgan and Moxey will be heroes in the community and we will attract more and more fans, making the future brighter. Look at a simple sum. My 10 year old sun go to a match. That £20.00 for 2 tickets. We have a drink, something to eat a program making and have spent £30.00 for an afternoon out. Cheap for me and affordable. The club received 7500 extra bookings giving £225,000.00 per game extra revenue. 23 home games and that’s a massive 5 million pounds, an extra 3 million plus for the wage bill. Simples..
Someone should do some homework on what I am saying I can not see any other way but win win win and Moxey is happy with the tils ringing..
don’t u find it strange that m+m cannot grasp this ? why is football rocking in Germany? because stadia are full because fans can actually afford to go….just think of the thousands of new fans we would attract – still , with homer simpson and mo in charge is it so suprising?
Totally agreed, like it or not Morgan spent the money on building seats. Surley between them they can understand that most of the cost associated with providing them is Fixed, it will pretty much cost the same regardless of if there is a bum on it or not.
I regret though Moxey will look at it and say, well if we sell them we will have to have X more securoity and X more stewards.
I tell you guys this fellows screwed up accounting from the school of diminishing returns can only take us one way.
Now you built em get some revenue from them.
Oh, to blazes with Moxey!!! All he cares about is the sound of Bonus Bells ringing !!!!!!!!
If someone knows and accountant who could work the figures out a little better then we give it to the Wolves it will prove what we say is right.
Morgan has to get the fans back on side, what better way of doing it
I totally agree with you.
NW rolled into town looking for his 14 club must think we are run by a right pair of tossers.
Chill out man its only an interview ! (note to self).
Please please Mr Morgan, somewhere in your list of contacts you must have aome good financial and commercially creative winners around.
I am afraid it is not mr Moxey please get rid.
The suggestion above about filling seats at lower prices is just never going to happen under Jez, I know his kind. “I don’t want to devalue the product” We sorry too late he has.
You have build the seats now but arses on em.
I was checking today and OMG have you two screwed up. In my humble opinion there are two really important things you guys missed.
1) The last two years and this year particularly, the Premiership is generally not that good. Look at the teams from 8th place down. Tell me we can not hold our own against them. 8th place is 40 points away from top. That means 10 very lucrative places below 7 of em save we could be established in.
2) The Championship this year was wide open and Promotion was not that big a challenge.
So how do you guys keep screwing it up. With Contract terminations and firings you will have spent more than enough money for us to be in the prem. You just chose to not spend it at the right time and when you did not wisely.
If you are going along with moxeys plans and ideas , wake up please.
This is more than inept this is gross negligence and incompetence.
Hear Hear ! Couldnt agree more
wouldn’t spend ANY money on players but boy oh boy have they spent bucketloads on paying off the hundreds of managers….
Precisely. And they managed to screw up at just the time when the financial rewards of being in the Premiership are going to be greater than ever. Does Morgan not even hold Moxey accountable for that ?
Absolutely top blog Thomas. See that Coyle is being slated by Bolton fans advising our board not to appoint.
Its so hard to get someone who has not failed before. With the money go round football now is, & the impatience of fans its hard for any new coach coming in. For the new man at Wolves the difficulty trebles, all the old guard to get rid of, the expectations of fans, then theres’ the owner who’s always grasping in the dark.
Lets hope they get the least worst option & just back him! But its a very tough choice & I really hope they do their homework this time.
Great blog Thomas…if only the rest of our beloved club was as impressive!
UTW
Spot on….. you get my vote to get poxy’s job
All ‘Wally with the brolly’ jokes aside, if Steve McClaren, with all his coaching experience and history is prepared to sink to our present level, I would bite his hand off!
McClaren is well past his sell date and is useless…
Amazed anyone thinks he might be good!
makes me wonder why he was only really successful in Europe..
I don’t think he has had success in Europe really.
If had been any good, surely we would have got him after MM was sacked?
From what I’ve heard McClaren would be a problem, personality wise…
I wouldn’t like him.
I agree Robin a common view in football
now is that he is a bit of a phoney. Also in his last 3 jobs at Wolfsberg, Forest and his return to Twente his services have been dispensed with inside 6 months.
I think we need to get real here.
We are a Division 3 side.
No, let me qualify that – A CRAP Division 3 side.
We are run by a couple of morons who could end up taking us into Division 4.
Saying McClaren is a phoney who is well past his sell by date is a bit ironic really. Supporters in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
He wasn’t only successful in Europe, he was Middlesborough’s most successful manager building a thriving youth academy which resulted in a team of good young English players.
Ferguson thought enough of him to have him as his right hand man for three seasons.
He has had more success than Coyle and Jackett put together.
I have no axe to grind on his behalf but, when someone with his pedigree shows interest in a rubbish football team in freefall, I think it’s a bit rich for us to be turning up our noses at him.
We’d all love Martinez or Harry or de Matteo but it ain’t going to happen.
Whoever we appoint is going to be a big gamble.
Young and unproven or experienced with a bit of success.
Considering the circumstances, and the numpties who are in charge we should be grateful for anyone showing an interest.
I’d much prefer an untried, young, ambitious, unheard of ‘Headcoach’, than McClaren, Coyle or Jackett.
We are a third division side, as you rightly point out Doogooder.
Does that mean we need to employ a third rate has been?
Unfortunately, if the young and ambitious don’t think we are a step up for them, we might have to.
I’d prefer an untried Jody Craddock as Head Coach rather than McClaren, Coyle or get your Jackett Moxey
Only successful in Europe? He’s never managed outside of Europe, you fool.
we are English sad sacks ! I DO NOT count England as European but if you want to eat snails and strike because someone sneezes you MUST be European . have a nice day
Sounds like you might be voting UKIP Goldy !
actually…yes ! the problem extends to the football too..i remember when only a couple of “jonny foriegners” were allowed per team . who was it we had-villneuve? we were SO flash back then!
yeah but that would make 2 wheres wally s …. theyre really hard to find – apparently . thelwell and mc claren were a great band weren’t they ?
goldy got a feeling we could soon be finding whally’s everywhere we look.
yeah but the whole bleedin lot are on the board and in the dressing room !! think it should be where isn’t the wally !
just been reading mel eves write up on 12 may in Birmingham mail …. that man puts it 100% spot on! but obviously mr morgan is far cleverer and wiser – NOT ! (well worth a read)
Just read that article OG’y.
Do you think Eves reads all our pearls of wisdom?
He’s repeating exactly what everyone here has being banging on about ever since I discovered the blog.
you know what doogy baby I thought that….. evesy is a secret wolves blogger !
We have far bigger problems than who gets chosen as Coach.
Probably 10/15 guys who could do us a job, but until Moxeys gone it does not matter a damn.
as I said above ; read mel eves opinion 12/5/13
If its true what we’re reading in the paper’s,Steve mcClaren interested in the wolves hot seat.
Two reasons why we shouldn’t appoint him,the first one he’s got a Mc in his surname and for me was part of the demise of our once great club.
The second reason ex England manager, done that twice already didn’t work don’t think it will again with McClaren.imo….Owen Coyle still for me.UTW.
Bill McGarry was a great manager!
He did well for us by and large.Though he got us relegated. It helps if you inherit good players.McGarry inherited,Dougan, Bailey,Wagstaffe,Munro,Parkin and Peter Knowles. The week before he signed for us they also signed a kid from Bradford, one Kenny Hibbitt. If you cannot do anything with that lot,you shouldn’t be in football. If he had signed another 2 or 3 as good as them, then we would have won the league. But he didn’t buy that many good players, remember Derek Jefferson.I have two abidding memories of Bill, winning the league cup and the tears he shed when he joined us second time round under the Bhattis, when he quit rather ‘be a part of the destruction of this great football club’.One can only wonder what he would make of the current situation.
Yep forgot about him a very good manager the first time around,as chris said inherited some very good player’s.
Point taken though!!.UTW..
Still think a new young head coach ( Steve Davis or Keith Downing or Robinson or there must be other contenders ) with maybe a DOF is the way to go.
Great summing up of the situation, Thomas.
Personally I think we’re unlikely to get better experience than Coyle or McLaren as manager. I don’t mind either, providing they take a firm hand with the players and are allowed to root out any changing room malignancy. It would be great if Ipswich do make a bid for Henry, Ward and Doyle as that would really help with cutting the wage bill.
I’m not bothered too much about which players stay or go. What I want to see is a totally new attitude. An emphasis on professionalism – that means total commitment to the club on and off the pitch, the highest possible standard of technical skill, exemplary fitness and stamina, coherent tactical play, unwavering discipline and superb team-spirit. That’s what I want our new manager to deliver.
With so many important player sales and purchases the quality of the new manager is exceptionally important. Wolves have a big opportunity to build from an almost zero base. Morgan has to get this one right. If he picks another Connor or Saunders he will get his comeuppance.
Well it looks like were not looking for a rising star but an experienced has been. Got to admit this disappoints me.
Agree Colin & the old guard MM type of Coyle, McClaren, Jackett, don’t fill me with any kind of enthusiasm.
Why not pick someone young and hungry, who hasn’t yet got failure on his CV ?
Could it be that only failures and has beens will work with Moxey, who surely is the root of the cancer?
Incidentally it maybe that they have just interviewed first those that are out of a job they may still yet make requests to speak to others. Well heres fingers crossed.
Looking at the betting it looks as though we have had contact with out of work managers Coyle,Jackett,Warnock and McClaren. Will they now ask to speak to any managers in work ? Still think they could make an approach for Ferguson or Davis – and how about Stuart McCall (he could give Leigh a lift back).
The interesting part comes after all the experienced men say no, given the working
conditions ie contact with Greaseball, Dullwell and Moron.
Also with little money to spend and trying to prize the Prima-Donnas out.
So to sum up. The Marx Brothers are not looking long term and laying foundations for the future
it’s another disastrous quick-fix, to sell more season tickets.
The biggest challenge we face from FFP rules is if we don’t get up at the first attempt. The drop in revenue (parachute, ticket sales etc) will squeeze the wage bill even more. Given that this only really leaves us with a policy of building a team of kids (cheaper wages) then the appointment of head coach has to be someone who has a track record for making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. McLaren has some success in this area at Middlesborough and also at United albeit he had th cream of the crop of youngsters to choose from. Sir Alex doesn’t employ any old numpty though. McLaren’s failings have tended to be when he has managed teams with top players – that isn’t going to be a problem at Molineux. He could be a decent shout.
Failing that I hear good things about Steve Davis. He might be worth a gamble now he isn’t playing much snooker.
Finally, doesn’t it speak volumes for the stature of this club that so many prominent managers are publicly putting their names forward. All the more damning on the owner that this great club is where it is.
Another thing. What does Kevin Dullwell do.? I understand he’s in charge of Development.
Well not much sign of Development as we slid into Div 3.
SACK MOXEY AND DULLWELL.
I think he is developing a rather large slide for moxey a couple of swings , sandpit and a climbing frame…the two m s want to use it for brainstorming…then off to get an ice cream. bless their little chubby chops !
Interesting quote from Gus Poyet after last nights defeat in the play-offs
Poyet will on Tuesday hold a meeting with Brighton’s chairman, Tony Bloom, to see whether he will be given enough transfer funds to convince him to stay on the south coast. “I always said that during the time we keep improving, I’ll be at the football club,” said the Uruguayan. “But as soon as we hit the roof? I need to know the answer to that in the morning, whether we’ve hit the roof or not. Right now, I don’t know … I’m not going to stay forever. It doesn’t matter how many years of contract you’ve signed.”
Dare we dream…?
Excellent informative blog, Thomas, and some lively discussion.
Apologies for stating the bleedin’ obvious but Wolves are in Div3 simply as a direct consequence of a series of lousy, compounding, top-level decisions.
Let’s face it – The Three-wise(?)-men and the Board do not know whether they want a shit or a haircut.
Surely, until there are changes upstairs, it matters not whether Pellegrini or “Darren from the burger-stand” juggles the poisoned chalice ??
Just read that Kenny J is going to be the first to be interviewed.
He gets a big recommendation from Graham Taylor so that’s something in his favour.
It’s all kicking off!
No jacket required great album, but not the man for me i’m afraid.
Beginning to look like re-run of McCarthy debacle. How can they sack a manager without having there eye on anyone ? My work colleague a villa fan is pissing himself his tip is Tony Daley till end of the year.
Don’t be stupid tony Daley !!! Alex mcleish my choice. Morgan and moxey doing a fine job.
Ah Tony Daley – the man who causes all our injury problems because he can’t get them fit enough. He needs to go too.
God no, not McLaren. Get coyle in and stop pissing about. What has SMc done recently? The games moved on and he hasn’t. What did he do at Forest – with money available??why did twente sack him after he was their most successful manager? He’s well past his sell by date.
Great blog Thomas!
Agree with DOOGooder’s comment further above, we have to realise we are Div 3 now and probably crap at that, so for anyone with experience the likes of which McLaren has, to show interest in managing us, I for one am pleased.
The other clubs who have been in our position of a similar size were clubs like Leeds and Southampton and at the time they were managed in Div 3 by Simon Grayson and Nigel Adkins, now we all know with hindsight that Adkins went on to do an amazing job but if you had told me he was coming in to manage our club before knowing that and seeing he had done ok at Scunthorpe I would have moaned about our lack of ambition, as would thousands more no doubt!!
I think we have to get real, McLaren’s CV is better than all others at present, he has at least won a title abroad, if he gets the job then good luck to him and we support him as best we can (same with any other manager that gets taken on) but lets not go through the whole Steve Bruce thing again because we all look a little silly when the manager who we all said wasn’t good enough for our club is sitting in the Prem next season whilst we are in Div 3.
UTW
ah.. a stripy pyjama clad thingy eh
Dont think Darren Ferguson or Steve Davis is aiming to high. Apologies for jex (?) moxey thats someone i work with.
but does he actually do any work ? tell himto apply for the managers job .. would be a perfect fit 🙂
Just driven past the Mol and saw office world delivering an umbrella stand.
I hope we get McLaren and those already making negative comments give him a chance. I think he could be a great manager for us.
Southampton and Norwich got double promotions taking on up and coming managers – Adkins from Scunthorpe and Lambert from Colchester. Whoever gets the job will have a good chance to show what they can do but for me the choices we are leaning towards are very uninspired and just confirm the leaden feet of our hierachy.
Well said Colin.
Because we are a third division team
does that mean
we have to employ a third rate has been?
Answers on a postcard to
Dullwell/Moxey Enterprises
Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.
You sir, have the intelligence of a gnat.
and you miss have a penis the size of a ladybird
David Platt anyone?
You know what Wile E Wolf, I think thats a very good shout. I doubt David Platt would be the least bit interested in us but I like your thinking. I would really love to have all this manager business sorted by now, have something to push on with. Shame really I thought Morgan was some type of construction industry guru, lets see if he can’t get the foundations right for Wolves this time round.
I dont want a guy who has done the rounds and whose name comes up with every vacancy, but with the M & Ms in charge I am not sure its the right setting for some up and coming young guy.
Firstly how the hell would they even identifiy one.
Secondly the guy is going to have to cross swords with Moxey before long, so the more experience and stature the better/
What we need with this selection is safe hands. Of all the names so far brolly man is probablly the guy. But i would really like Dave Jones back.
Noddy Holder Please…
Would fit in great with Jez and Steve
All know jack about football and care not about the club..
“Now lets all pull together,
My Oh My”
Interesting this news blackout. Think it hides a number of major faults in the so called leadership.
Overall major fault line with possibilities mentioned. Think battle between Moxey and anyone encroaching on his power base.
IF appointment made to keep Moxey happy I give it till Christmas.
The ghost of Curbs still hangs around the place.
So the tension continues around Molineux. Who? What? When? How?
Coyle, Jackett, McClaren, Warnock. The list goes on and on. Who will they choose and how will they choose?
My guess is they have a dartboard in Morgan’s office with photos of the leading contenders for head coach. Chuck some darts at it and whoever gets the most hits gets the job.
Well that’s how they seem to have picked the last 2 managers.
I have a gut feeling that Jackett will be the correct ‘fit’ for the Wolves job. He is used to working with no money which is a big plus for Morgan/Moxey.
McClaren has vast experience but I suspect he would want too much in wages.
I am not worried who we get because I never worry about things I have no control over.
Fate will pluck the lucky candidate out of the pot and into the fire, or is that out of the fire and into the pot? Or out of the frying pan into the fire? Yeh, definitely the last one.
Jackett will come in at half the price of the others the fact he is as dull as ditchwater wont be a problem.
Anything that goes out of the frying pan at the Molineux usually ends up down a certain fat gullet.
I just hope it doesn’t come out the other end like most of his pies!
Lets not forget our very own wolvesblog blogger for the managers vacancy “theDOOGooder” 😉
Is it just me or have all the main contenders had a personality bypass ? Moxey DNA ?
Express and Slur comment that it could be two weeks before an appointment.
Doyle having surgery…………
Beginning to feel like mass dithering has broken out.
Rudderless and clueless.
Dear Abbott & Costello football managers dont want speculative interviews – they want to be wanted they want to be head hunted. They want the club to know what it wants and not to be completely clueless. When they are already out of work and there CV’s are already awful the last thing they need is to be invloved in public farce.
Worth a read just to remind us how bad things were back in the early 80’s.
http://twohundredpercent.net/?p=23076
I’m getting a horrible feeling that Thelwell will soon be taking over as caretaker manager.
www I suspect you might be right. Its hard to credit but as time goes by the chances of that increase.
Just like the MM fiasco. I can see the announcement coming.
“After interviewing many of the candidates available and after a dilligent search, the board were unable to find a candidate who matched our ambitions and standards. Accordingly we have decided to appoint………knows the club……………………….knows the players…………done great things………meets our very strict criteria.”
Surly they would nat have the nerve to??????
They would you know.
Another thought of course Moxey is in no great hurry. If they leave it till the last minute it will be no time to assess players and no time for signings.
I see my old friend Tony Daley on TV at a Villa players reunion. Saying how happy he is that Villa were not relegated.
Haven’t heard any comment from him about his involvement in our 2 relegations.
Another mercenary with Villa stamped on his heart while he pockets money from our club.
Exemplifies a point I have made several times – where are our former players at this club? If we cant have Wow Johnny Woow Johnny you’re the greatest in the land Richards nor Kenny nor Waggy as manager then why cant they be coaches at whatever level, on the board, publicity officers, anything!!! just still associated, working inside the club!! Not on the outside like the rest of us watching usurpers like Moxey and Morgan with no love for our club – take over and suck the life blood out of this great footballing institution. For that is what we are – a great footballing institution. With a proud history that is only bettered by clubs like Liverpool, United, etc. who luckily for them did not suffer as we did in the 80s and by upstarts like Chelsea thanks to a Russion billionaire. Despite all that none of them have the soul of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. They do not have Molineux – hold on to what it was like not what it has been like recently! They dont have maginificent statues erected for heroes like Stan and Billy! They simply are not Wolves. How on earth we have let things come to this again when outsiders are trying to kill our club, as did the Bhattis in the 80s. We need to look at ouselves for letting this happen again. We need to do something, What I do not know. Hearts on sleeves time. Words mean fVck all. Gutted and p!55ed off.
Not saying he was my choice but what has Ferguson done not to be even considered.
Is this a good omen or a bad one.
I have to assume the latter.
Beginning to look like it was always going to be Jackett. If they do ‘an evening with kenny Jackett’ it better be under 10 quid.
Hacked off beginning to look to me the london media was right and knew a lot more than we did – it was always going to be jackett. WHY. In 6 years at Millwall he has taken them from div 1 and almost taken them back again. Without the use of many loan players including Chris Woods who scored 11 gls they would have gone down. He is out of the Watford/Graham Taylor stable and plays the same style football. In his time at Millwall he has attracted hardly any interest from other clubs. None of his players have gone on to play at higher level. Lastly i have just watched Chelsea win the Europa cup – in a high reward multi-media world charisma and personality counts and i am afraid kenny Jacket lacks it in abundance.
On a totally different topic.
I see the offical web site recognized the great Peter Broadbents Birthday today/
Happy Birthday Peter, My God you were good.
Although it is right and proper for the club to do this.
Is it just me or do other old fans feel slightly sickened at the current Management, who clearly dont give a shit about us or I suspect the old players talking about the old greats.
People who cared and gave it all out on the field,
I guess I am just pissed at the moment cos if they didnt recognise them I would be unhappy to.
But these idiots are not sincere and some how not worthy of even mentioning these old greats.
Just bugs me.
I just read this after posting some similar sentiments about ex players, cherished players not being actively employed participating in day to day running of our Wolves.
HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY PETER FRANK BROADBENT!!!
Of a time when we were “Champions of the World”.
Moxey, Morgan, Bhattis – you fVckin fools.
Who have we spoken to except kenny Jacket ?
Has the Thelwell selection process been a pack of lies ?
Had Jackett been promised the job before he left Millwall ?
Why are we about to hire the most expressionless man in football ?
Moxeys yes man ?
A puppet ?
Just think i am asking the questions a worried fan is entitled to ask.
They sound more like facts to me than questions … Expect all the usual smokescreen BS stuff …. to be followed by appointing the cheapest bloke going and the continued sale of (any) prized assets ….
REDROW 7 WOLVES 0
League 2 – you better bloody believe it’s on the cards
For those of you who’ve forgotten already, YES, we are in League 1
FUCK OFF MOXEY YOU FAT SLAB OF ROTTING DOG SHIT
“Kevin Thelwell was promoted from Academy Manager to Head of Football Development & Recruitment in December 2012 and will be responsible for leading the recruitment process. He will carry out the required preparatory work and make recommendations on candidates for the Board to consider for interview.”
I think what this actually means is – “Kev, will you give any out of work managers a quick call to see if any of them want to speak to us, ta”
Not sure we even contacted Coyle,McClaren and Warnock. From whats been said in the press they put there own names up there. If it has been a charade i hope they will come out and say so.
Still hoping i am calling it wrong but this is how it looks to me.
You know what’s the matter with this web site, I will tell you. Too many of the real fans speak too much sense and the truth from the heart, that’s what is the matter they care. Really care.
On the BBC Sport website I followed the link and it says “Steve McLaren has some conditions” Is being useless one of his conditions. For me this is going to go tits up big style and we are going to be in the brown smelly stuff all over again. A very angry real fan.
In my opinion as long as the Moxey regime survives, all such operations are a waste of time and doomed to failure. Good managers, AND good players, talk to Moxey and don’t like what they hear.
He’s overseen a descent from Premiership riches to Division 3 in successive seasons, which would be difficult if you were trying. And yet Morgan still lets him oversee major footballing decisions. Of course, ably assisted by our Acadamey manager who’s now calleed something else.
It’s a complete and utter shambles and amateurish beyond belief. No change there then.
What we’ll get is a yes man who can’t believe his luck. Looks like Kenny Jackett to me.
Spot on, Martin, the club is in crisis (that’s C R I S I S).
Appointing another scapegoat (12 months wages for 6 months ‘work’) is not the answer.
MMG: MOXEY MUST GO, and preferably take ‘Topper’ Thelwell (in charge of burger-stand, academy, and now recuitment of new coaches, managers etc etc) with him.
Tackle the causes before the symptoms.
had to double check it wasnt me that wrote this response – absolutely couldnt agree more !
Mclaren >? haaaarrrrhaaaaarrr are you delusional – forget his track record, I can tell you know for no small amount that he hasnt even been contacted, all smokescreen stuff to let time pass and make the appointment of Jackett look like a well thought out process… which is all lies, he didnt pack in millwall on a whim – do they think we are ALL doped white mice ?
6 months ago I said I wasnt spending another penny on the club until I see something other than the asset stripping of my beloved Wolves … 6 months on and it looks very much like my money will be staying safely in my pockets…
How the hell do we go about getting moxey (and morgan) out of our club !?
So the rebate details are out. Wolves are returning £260k to early bird season ticket holders. By my reckoning that is about the same as a month’s combined salary for Johnson and O’Hara. Sobering thought that isn’t it?
And equates to a mere £28 rebate for each fan … there you go, dont that make up for it all …\
jokers.
Moxeys calculator needs more batteries. Every hour that goes past without
an appointment means more pies for him.
Clubs in the lower divisions are sorting out their squads.
Moxey and Dullwell sorting out boxes of crisps and anything left over that is edible
from the stores.
This “process” is laughable and a repeat of the utter shambles that followed
MM’s departure.
They just don’t learn.
Just read extracts of Margreitter’s interview with an Austrian paper in the E & S.
Confims what we were all thinking – the players were happy to simply pocket the money regardless of results/self-respect.
Depressing reading though as I remember the ‘they prefer life in the Championship line’ a few years back. Disgraceful that it’s crept back in. Could do with a few more sticking their necks on the line and telling it how it is.
How disappointing. He’s burned his bridges for sure.
I’ve been begging for Him and Batth to be given a chance for the whole of last season. No chance now.
His distribution is much better than any of our other defenders. He actually passes it (not hoofs it) forward to another wolves player. He also directs his headed clearances to team mates too.
He thinks about what he is doing as opposed to Johnson who can’t think at all.
I’ve just read this article and I think Margreitter may have secured his position in the team.
It is a refreshing view from someone who clearly wants more from football than a flash car and an easy life.
Sako to Fulham though – not quite so good.
I totally agree DOOG…He could just be part of a small splinter group that are sick to the back teeth of seeing the rest of the inadequate money grabbing team “mates”…ripping our club off. He may just be the start of a revolt against those tossers. The tossers who played well below the standard they are capable of just so they could sit in the comfort of the Championship……All the Tossers (JOH-KH-KW-RJ) the list goes on….should all be sacked for under performing.
The club’s warned that upto 50 staff are going to lose their jobs because of relegation while the man responsible keeps his. Reading responses on the E&S site, there seems to be a massive outcry for Moxey to go, people who won’t buy a ticket til he’s gone.
This is becoming a juggernaut that’s going to be impossible to stop unless fortunes change very soon.
Just one sacking is needed, appoint a top manager, get the fans back on side and keep the 50 in work.
I think that most of what needs to be said has been said on this particular blog.
One thing more and that’s my lot until I get back from seeing my mate Eric.
The Mirror reported yesterday that McClaren was interested in the Wolves job – but with conditions.
The main one being that SM & JM have to convince him of their ambition to get us back where we belong.
McClaren obviously sees this as possibly his last chance to establish himself as a top manager (don’t laugh).
He won’t take the job unless Morgan promises him a decent amount of money to spend.
Therefore, if he gets the job he will get the backing that Ståle and Deån never had.
Which gives us the best chance we will ever have, given our position, of some success.
In my humble opinion it can only be a good thing for Wolves.
A decent coach, with a decent track record and a decent amount of money to spend – and desperate to make an impression.
And if he doesn’t get it, all you McClaren haters out there will be happy.
Mclaren would require far more commitment than the 2 Stooges have ever had in mind … he isnt even being considered, of that you can be sure. What still puzzles me though, is how they seem to have duped Bully into believing any of this bullshit. Why is he endorsing Steve at every opportunity … Similarities between this and the Bhattis using Dougan as a popular figurehead perhaps ? Surely not….
Looks to me DOOGooder like it was always a one horse race all this selection process milarky was to try and ease Kenny Jacket into the job. Although i am not a fan of McClaren i see even less in jacket so i am not happy. I would have to see an up and coming manager like Steve Davis. It wouldnt surprise me if we dont eventually see him at somewhere like West Brom or Stoke. I am also annoyed at the arrogance and the deceit of the club in pretending the job was open.
I don’t hate McClaren Doogooder, I just don’t think he is what we need.
We are all entitled to an opinion.
To me he is a third rate has been & I do not think that is conducive to a club in our position.
He may be a very nice chap.
Thomas,
Back in February someone called “Craig” asked you if he could send you “a guest post in defence of Steve Morgan”, which you accepted.
I, and maybe other readers, would be very pleased to hear Craig again, this time perhaps in defence of Messrs Morgan, Moxey, and the multi-tasking Mr Thelwell (assuming Craig isn’t one of these three !).
Thanks.
Yes, I would like to see that as well.
On the next manager – would have hated McC twelve months ago and not been delighted with Coyle. Now they both seem plausible options, certainly in comparision to Jackett.
Thought Margreiters bit was articulate and on the ball.
I’m a bit disgusted by the paltry sum of £35.00 given to early bird season ticket holder’s for another relegation.
If they had sacked moxey they could have trebled the amount of money in rebate and saved the 50 jobs under threat, tight bastards.FOJM,FOSM,FOKT.
It’s looking more like the jackett has the job by all the rumours flying about, even steve bull is spouting his name in his E&S column,it looks like a bit of moxey to me trying to get the fans on to back kenny jackett because its steve bull,as much as i like steve bull he’s not getting my vote..Owen Coyle my favourite.UTW.
Last year my season ticket in billy wright upper was £500. It was the biggest waste of money of my life, watching the worst wolved side in living memory. The two robbing fat gits come out and say how sorry they are. They patronise us with the slogan – tough times dont last, tough people do. A new season ticket to watch lower league football is £460. A saving of £40, which over 23 home games is a saving of £1.74 per game. The lying robbin fuckin……….. £1.74!!!!! Final straw. Morgan, you said you would leave if the fans dont want you. leave NOW!
50 staff may lose their jobs, these players should hang their heads in shame as a direct result of their total lack of commitment and effort and their ” I’m alright so f..k you attitude”, people will be losing income at a time of recession. Seems like more of the ” we are all in it together” that politicians like to say but do not actually mean.
Some sour grapes from our half a million unigame Austrian friend, but I’m sure he’s right. Though I have to say the ‘cultured football’ I saw was anything but, it was like watching comatose crabs at times. As for the new ‘head coach’ I think the deadly duo should hire the Swedish Chef, he’s cheap, easily disposable and has plenty of experience working with muppets.
Why is jacket as short as 8/11 for the Wolves job. Is it because he is the outstanding candidate – No. Is it because wishful thinking Wolves fans are backing him – No. Is it because disinterested people in london town think they have some inside information – Yes. Its obviously leaked out around jacket that he has virtually got the job. If this is true then the’ hunt for the right man’ that were being fed up here is a smokescreen and insulting bullshit.
I am still hoping that the deplorable Wolves hierachy may yet be embarrassed into a re-think. We will see i am probably being niave.
I don’t know what to think anymore Bout managerial/ head coach positions. I threw my eyes upto heaven when mick was appointed. Coyle since last time always my choice, but who knows?? He could end up being shite too! Jackett could do good, plays good stuff. Or could be a loada bollocks.,.. None of us know really ,so we should all have learned enough over the past 10 years or more to be open minded.
I like many of us, am of the opinion the slections was made from the outset all this talk about process and selection is bull shit.
The fact that some guys have not even been contacted proves it.
How these shitheads have the nerve to continue to insult us and expect us to believe their shit time after time beggars beleive.
If its the same again Mr Morgan then thats it for me you and that fat ass you emply will finally have destroyed my love of the great club. You are both a bloody disgrace, but shame on me for even giving you a second chance let alone a 4th.
Disgraceful!
my sentiments exactly … i’m ust waiting for them to announce it and all my weekends will free up from August …
It’s nothing short of criminal what they have done to our club and I cant bear to witness any more of it … there are so many better things i can be doing with my time than watch Wolves get slashed and burned to the ground …
Dumb and Dumber with Dullwell really take the biscuit.
Lying, Incompetence, no respect….you could write a whole page of misdemeanours.
Think we are in the crap big time now all chickens home to roost.
Whoever they appoint in 6 months time they will change their mind.
This job is one of the most difficult in the league. It’s not one for a novice…….
ive had the worst week of my life starting with a tooth abcys followed by having to watch my dog being put down in my arms yesterday…I am struggling to stave off the emotions with the thought of “at least ive still got the wolves ” …… and all the enjoyment football brings – need I say any more?
Sorry to hear about your dog fella – feel for you on that one
thanks mate ..really appreciated. it kind of puts everything in context..she was a yorkie and gold and black (black and tan to the layman) thanks
Am I the only one who doesn’t want to put http://www.expressandstar.com in my browser, and see what bad news / drivel / b.s/ is spouted out?
And if the rumours do prove true, whether i think KJ is the man or not, I’ll get behind him.
I need to see a lot more deadwood being cleared out though.
The biggest advantage we have today compared with the 80’s is the Internet……if enough people back the cause and it goes viral Morgan and Pie Man could be long gone……Someone will see the potential…..lIVING IN HOPE!!!! 🙁
A Leopard cant change it’s spots, moxey will keep his stranglehold over the club and morgan will keep bleeding the club dry to fund redrow … the only variable being the brand of bullshit they use to try and cover it all up with…
bleak times indeed.
Is there hope here…?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/16/gus-poyet-suspended-brighton
No hope at all.
Poyet wants a guarantee of more funds. You can just see Moxey and Morgan falling for that one.
First man to say ‘I know loads of lower division players who will come in for peanuts and do a job’ gets the gig.
It seems that SEB, Hunt and Berra have gone if the E&S have got it right. We are trying to sell Sako and it looks like Edwards will stay. Who is making these decisions? Will the new manager have no say in who he wants to keep or is it already a done deal? If not then it seems like Moxey and possibly Thelwell are pulling the strings. Moxey should not be involved in football related issues. It’s partially down to him we are in division 3.
I find this so depressing. It is their decisions over the last few months that have got us into the sh*t we’re in. We talk about a purge, a fresh start but nothing is changing. Moxey is still running the show.
Wolfman Jack, I think that would be a great result, but as ever I just can’t see it happening.
So I read today, that the big clearout starts.
Now let me be the first to admit a clearout is needed, we were carrying way to much dead wood.
I am not compaining about the various merits of the decisions, but three things are concerning me.
1: The decisions are being taken before we have appointed a new Head Fallguy.
2: They seem to be based totally and soley upon money. Can it be that every player out of contract, is of absolutely no use or interest to us or the new fall guy?? Two younger players who are out of contract have gone. No problem with Jody, he retired. So every single player they could dump they have done so. Taking up the options was a must do because there might be money in it and thats fine.
3: Nothing has changed the fat arsed one continues to make all the Footballing personell calls.
Morgan you really better know what you are doing. After 58 yrs of loyal support this might just be the end for me.
Now the mass exodus has began, lets hope they get rid of some more of the deadwood,ie.
Henry
ward
Eggert jonnsen( what ever his name is.)
Foley.
Time to bring in new blood, the kids and one or two steady heads.with a good manager..Owen coyle.
NY Wolf said:: After 58 yrs of loyal support this might just be the end for me.
How close is this I’m 58 years in Feb 2014. All this $hite is so hard to swallow for me, I believe in the states you call it Bull Crap.
Light side do they make Man City Shirts in FBS Size?
Funny thing Liverpool have ALWAYS been my number 2 team but Morgan as even soured me on them.
Were Gorman and Winnall lost causes??? I dodnt know but would appreciate some input.
Just heard that Waggy is back in Hospital lets all hope for the best and keep him in our thoughts.
Get well soon Waggy, what we wouldnt give to see making a fool out of Chopper Harris again.
We loved you back then and still love ya today.
Waggy Waggy Waggy
Have just read in the Express and Shit that Chris Powell has popped up as another candidate for Head Coach / Manager (what ever you want to call it). This is a candidate I wouldn’t mind seeing at the helm (my personal view). Not a massive amount of managing experience but seems to know his way around league 1 and the championship.
http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2013/05/17/charlton-athletic-boss-chris-powell-in-the-frame-for-wolves-job/
Get well soon Waggy.
Yes amongst others he would do for me, but in the end it wont matter who we choose.
He will not be allowed to do his job properly.
Today was just the beginning of more of the Jez Moxey strategy of how to run a football club.
Cutting the cloth to suit…………………. It works all the way down to non league and he will still be a success cos he made a profit.
Chris Powell fill’s me with a bit more confidence than most of the other candidates because of the budgets he has had to work with at Charlton, probably one of the lowest in the championship, and he hasn’t complained once all season, unlike a certain noisy Uruguayan I could mention 😉
He sounds like he could fit the bill perfectly, I believe his wages wouldn’t cost that much, which would be great news for the two money grabbing bastards upstairs and I don’t think he would bother them that much either.
Oh well…. just have to wait and see
