At some point during our impoverished recent past, I could take no more.
It could have been any one of Preston, Ipswich or Rotherham and it almost certainly featured Edwards, Saville and Coady.
I recall big black clouds, Red Row signage, a smug shrug of indifference from the director’s box and an assertion that if I didn’t like it, I could stay at home.
In Molineux, nobody could hear you scream, so I took to the blog to make myself heard, pumping out a torrent of invective like a machine gun, aimed at the owner, the CEO and amongst others, Conor Coady.
I called him a ‘terrible footballer’ and wrote him off as a useless failure, who I’d have been happy to see the back of along with the majority of his pathetic team-mates.
Were he to leave now I’d cry salt tears for the world we couldn’t conquer, such is his importance to the side. And for that Conor Coady, I am sorry.
For all the justifiable hype about Neves, Jota, Boly and co, Coady’s transformation to defensive lynchpin has surely been Nuno’s biggest revelation to date.
As the great man said upon his arrival: “I really think we can progress the players in a short period of time.”
Never has a truer word been said in the case of Coady, whose strengths have been accentuated in a new position few of us thought of him as a plausible candidate.
As is so often the sheet we sing from, we don’t like square pegs in round holes, we want defenders to defend and if a club like Huddersfield would sell a player for £2 million, then how good must he be anyway?
With the exception of perhaps Pep Guardiola, we think we’ve got the most progressive football mind at Molineux right now and I can’t help but draw up a parallel between Nuno and the ex-Barca boss, who our new cult hero might well have stroked his beard at when contemplating Coady’s future.
The following passages from the excellent Secret Footballer – Guide to the Modern Game book gives some insight into Pep’s preference for another ex-Liverpool midfielder who probably shared the same Melwood training ground as our number 16.
“English football has been misreading the tectonic tactical plates for years. When I played against Javier Mascherano he was just another holding midfielder that our team had to navigate around.
“At the time, Liverpool were relying on Fernando Torres for goals, with Steven Gerrard supporting him and Xabi Alonso supporting both with his initial pass. When Liverpool lost the ball, Mascherano would go haring towards it and, so long as you could by-pass him you were at Liverpool’s back four.
“We dominated the match by moving Mascherano all around the pitch like a moth to the flame. We achieved it by sending one of our strikers into a wide position as a decoy and sure enough Mascherano followed. Once he’d left his hole we sent a midfielder through the middle and pushed the opposite wide man and full-back high up the pitch. Liverpool couldn’t cope.
“But while we patted ourselves on the back in the changing rooms and labelling him as ‘basic’, Barcelona were appraising his performance.
“When Mascherano signed for them for €24 million, most of us scratched our heads. There must have been a mistake. But there he stayed and even more bizarrely, he was played as a centre-half.
“All that was made possible because Barcelona discovered that, in a team that kept the ball, a player like Mascherano was the perfect cover at centre-half. He was strong, he was comfortable on the ball, he was quick enough across the ground and he was brave.
“Pep Guardiola had come to realise that Claude Makalele started Chelsea’s attacks and his rationale told him that if he took that player out and put him centre-half, then he would not only start counter attacks directly from the back four but he would also have one extra attacking player. It all rested on finding a midfielder who could play centre-half.”
It must be said that comparisons between the capabilities of an Argentinian Champions League and La Liga winner and Conor Coady are not being drawn (not least by me who had consigned him as ‘useless’ only a year or two ago!).
But me expecting last year’s Makalele in Championship mode was to miss the point entirely with Coady. A tier-two version of Mascherano is far more preferable in a progressive mind.
Thankfully Nuno saw what this mere-mortal missed and Coady’s effervescent leadership, cool distribution and exceptional decision making are all beacons of light in an already dazzling side.
That I’d have deprived us all of the above makes me a numpty. An apologetic numpty.
Sorry Conor.

Few of us thought Coady was God’s gift to football and his transformation has indeed been remarkable. I think what this shows is that there’s a place for most players in a team if that team is playing a style which requires exactly what they have in the locker.
I was an unashamed fan of Dave Edwards, especially under KJ, but it’s hard to imagine where he would fit into a Nuno team. Doherty, on the other hand, I was always so so about, but his transformation matches that of Coady now he plays wing back.
So don’t be too hard on yourself Ben. Square pegs in round holes doesn’t work. But Nuno, with clever use of file and sandpaper, has reshaped some of our old guard so they fit perfectly into the new holes he has created. Who of us could have foreseen how well he would have done it?
Great article Ben.
I would like to see what he could do with Iorfa.
I know we have some great fullbacks, but he just needs a bit more belief from a coach I think.
This season he really has show the talent that many had praised him for I never his earlier years in his career.
Towards the end of last season you could see his adapatability and importance in the team growing. Nunos movement of him to centre half really has been a master stroke and it’s seen Batth finally being pushed down the pecking order (this may get him to sort his act out again).
Speaks volumes for Nuno. Could you see Conor Coady in a 3-4-3 under Lambert? Doe fuckin think so.
Well said Ben, your ‘owning up’ does you credit. I can of course say, without a hint of smugness honestly!, that I was always a fan of Coady and would regularly champion his cause here on this Blog. I admit I didn’t see him as a centre back but I did see something in him that set him way above the likes of Evans, Saville and Edwards – can you believe Lambert rated them three above Saiss? But we all make mistakes. Personally I still have major reservations about Batth and Price and yet NES seems to have improved them and sees something in them that I struggle to see.
I liked Kenny Jackett, but Kenny selling KMac and wanting to sell Coady broke the back of my support. In the end I regretted that Jeff Shi didn’t sack Kenny before he sold McDonald. People blamed Mendes, etc., for Jeff sacking Kenny, but, personally, I’ve always wondered if Jeff got criticism of Kenny from the coaches and the players about the sale of McDonald and the impending sale of Coady, which caused Jeff to change his mind about Kenny after one week. For certain, if Coady wanted to stay at Wolves (and surely he did?), Jeff must have got negative feedback about Jackett from Conor himself!
Anyway, suffice to say, like you, I can say that I didn’t see Conor as a centre back “but I did see something in him that set him way above the likes of Evans, Saville and Edwards.” Snap! In fact, I thought KMac and Conor were our two best players, so I was mind-boggled by Jackett’s intention to sell both! Extraordinary!
Having said that, I agree that Nuno’s transformation of Coady is also extraordinary!
Smug is good…. Me and my mate used to have some excellent pub arguments over Coady and which I am ecstatic to admit; that thanks to Nuno, I was right all along.
I couldn’t put my finger n just why I had this belief because the managers he worked under certainly didn’t help but having managed people myself I saw something in the guy that I liked. It was then reinforced when I watched a short yoo chube on the team’s arrival at Anfield in last year’s cup victory. Coady not only exuded good humour and confidence, he also stopped and spoke to our fans and signed autographs until everybody had been dealt with.
This is a top bloke (for a scally) and his inclusion as Captain at the centre of our defence reminds me of another fella from up that way called Emlyn Hughes who (accompanied by much early grumbling of being ‘over the hill’) played a similar role and added more silverware to the Molineux cabinet.
So well done and keep it up Connor, and again thank you senor Santos for being able to spot a players true talents.
Good piece Ben and owner to your elbow for saying your peace about Coady.
I carefully considered Coady’s output during the Jackett and Lambert chapters and I too did not rate him or what he bought to the table.
But that was then … BEFORE FOSUN and BEFORE FOSUN FINALLY UPPED THEIR GAME TO CAREFULY VET OUR NEW ARRIVALS MORE THOROUGHLY FOR A BETTER FIT.
Let’s be honest …. the missmash of the Morgan / Moxey era when spending F**# All was seen as prudent and balancing the books has at long last been cast off into infinity and beyond.
The point of this is that Coady is playing with better quality players who do a terrific job under the guidance of a fantastic coach…. he’s playing 7-8 out of 10 every week. The new system suits his strengths to a tee …as it does also with Doherty.
I picked up on Friday how our two wing backs from our goal kicks were the furthest forward Wolves players … standing wide on the touchline further forward than Bonatini. …. I cannot imagine our previous dinosaur managers setting up like that.
Our last 10 years under Morgan have been and will be forgettable/ forgotten…. we’re on the up and upwards is where we’re headed.
As a footnote …I found it hilarious that a Baggies fan publicly labelled Poolis as a Dinosaur……. loff …you bet.
…Owner ..should read … power
Pretty much in the same boat as Bedford here, never thought he would be at Centre but liked him from day one for his tenacity, that said he pissed me off getting sent off for that stupid pull back but we all have a brain fart now and then. Don’t know about Price but still think that Baath doesn’t fit into the system. As I have said before I would never doubt his effort and commitment I just don’t think he has the skill level or vision. Great season so far though and can’t wait for the next match. Only downside for us ‘abroaders’ is that now Sky have picked up a paper and seen who is top of the league there is the inevitable changes in schedule with a glut of Wolves games which means less matches on Wolves TV that we can see live….still can’t believe the amount of talent we have in this team and in the 2nd 11…..onwards and upwards…Nuno is the ‘gem’ in it all
I have the same problem with Sky stopping us expats watching the Wolves games. So I log on to livetv.sx or Firstrowsports and am normally able to see the game complements of Sky with the occasional screen freezing, although I cannot understand the Russian language commentator.
I often go and search reddit soccer streams when the games are Linn Sky and it’s possible to find streams in HD. Would recommend checking it out for the next game!
Is it a coincidence or some conspiracy theory waiting to be written that Ben has a piece on Connor Coady on the very same day as Mikey on Southbank experience has written singing his praises. Both well written and worthy of a read.
If only to slap me on the arse for losing heart with Coady towards the end of last season even though I thought he was a good player. Our last regime and their various whipping boys cared more about their own staus than any of us fans. We were but the shite on their shoes, a carbuncle on the back of their neck a drain of their precious empire building time.
Nuno spotted his value immediately, something the shite manager/coaches failed or had the inability to do in their short timewith us. They shall be fonly remembered (for all the wrong reasons) as opposed to Nuno who is rapidly growing from the Holy Ghost to Doglike status.
Sothbank Resistance. Dohhhhhh
Southbank even.
Ben,
Respect to you my friend. To remain quiet is an easy option, but to raise your head and tell all that your considered views were inaccurate speaks volumes.
It is down to Nuno, in my opinion, that he saw something that a large number of us failed to see. That pleases me greatly.
I thank you for this post, it made me smile knowing that there are some good guys out there willing to say they were wrong.
I was in the same mind last season but what a change the only blimp was being sent off at Sheffield United Nuno has been a revelation this season and I can see him taking us to the premiership
Great article Ben, I think there’s a lot of us that could write similar apologises but maybe not so eloquently.
I think football / players will always divide fans, as above DB is not universally liked & considered to be “good enough” but I disagree (but want the fek do I know!) for me I’m super super pleased with our squad, with any starting eleven that Sir Nuno of the Wulfunia chooses, knowing his bench will be more than adequate to fulfil the needs as sub’s if he feels the need to use them.
I also don’t want to start the debate again about “our Nuno” & the toffees, but when did we have another team (above or below us) wish to poach our manager – that Italian comes to mind again – Fucktifarno!
So Ben im happy to sit on the same side of the fence or even on the naughty step with you & a few thousand more & we can all hang my head in shame but mainly I’d also like to doff my cap in the direction of the best coach in England at present.
In Nuno We Trust
Great analogy. I’d been telling friends bonatini is the dzeko. Jota is this levels David silva. Neves the new scholes/ busquets. I can add this to the list
Always loved Coady for his character and enthusiasm and his ability to cram more words into a minute than anyone in the history of verbal communication.
He reminds me of a young Emlyn Hughes or Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.
He has said often enough that he loves Wolverhampton Wanderers.
And I believe him.
Nuno has certainly coaxed the genie out of his Scouse Lamp and I’d like to see him at Molineux for a good long while yet. Possibly as captain if he can learn to master the Queen’s English.
I’m really made up that you are fully back in the fold Ben.
Let’s have a few more contributions from you in future please.
And a LOT more from Conor Coady
….. Tigger from Winnie the Pooh……
Brilliant.
Let’s face it, Messi would probably be rubbish at centre half. Although taking note of Bedford’s long held views my view is that Coady would still be a very average midfielder. However he had indisputably been a revelation as sweeper in his Franz Beckanbaeuresque role. Massive credit therefore to Nuno for spotting his potential.
Coady can pass the ball which is the main reason why Danny B will only ever be a stop gap. He can’t pass I’m afraid and no amount of coaching will be able to teach him. Sorry DB fans.
Crazy Horse.
That was Emlyn Hughes’s nickname, and he loved it and lived up to it.
I will never forget his comment about namby pambies who wouldn’t join the England squad for various reasons: he said he would walk bare foot from Liverpool to Wembley over broken glass to play for his country, for nothing.
I think the highest compliment Connor Coady can be given is that he reminds me of Crazy Horse.
Think we all owe an apology to Cody, Ben but his revelation has only come about because of Nuno.
Redrow signs – DOWN
Money shop – OUT (as soon as we can)
Liquidator – BACK
In Nuno/Fosun/Mendes we trust.
The “shrug of indifference from the director’s box”
Well said Ben !
I shudder whenever I think of how they took the piss out of the loyal fan base, some of whom have probably been lost forever.
I would rather support a club with no money than support a club which simply masquerades as a big club.
Hi. Hertford, speaking as one who gave up his season ticket in Wolves penultimate season in the Premiership as I saw no possibility of things improving under the deadly 2 Ms. I am pleased to report that with my faith has been restored. Thanks to Fosun Mr Shi and ,Mr Santo I will be returning to The Golden Palace having taken up Wolves second half of the season offer. See you all there.
Sorry about the poor grammar and terrible syntax. Reminds me of the much missed Amanda.
And you will have a very warm welcome, great to see full terraces and singing coming from all parts of the ground. More and more fans are buying into this Nuno revolution.
Thanks Stu – looking forward to being a regular attendee instead of now and again or from the sofa when Sky deign to cover Wolves.
Good for you Ben speaking up that you got it wrong .Whilst I do think Coady is loving life to me the interesting question is would he resist an offer to go back to Liverpool to join their first team as he would surely be an addition to their terrible defence ? I hope not but I can see how he might be tempted .
The next question for you Ben is were we all wrong about Leon Clarke ? Not that I would want him back but it is remarkable how with enough love and maybe not trying too hard he has done so well atSheffield United .Which one of us would have thought him capable of four in a game at Championship level ?
Shows you that with the right man in charge all sorts of players are capable of surprising things .
Never surrender, never give up, and NEVER GO BACK!!!!
They were all crap, especially Ward, and nothing about them when at the Mol ever suggested they would be anything else.
If they hadn’t gone, Fosun might not have looked at us, we might still have fuckwad morgan and his greaseball sidekick, and then where would we be.
We should never live in the past, coz we cant change a thing, but we can affect the future.
If they were that good, why didnt they prove it when with us?
Once we are in the Prem all these second rate teams are going to get pasted twice a season, by the liquid football maestros, and the ex players will be puke green with envy, and suffer from twisted blood.
It wont be a question of someone going to Liverpool or anywhere else, it will be the so called superstars begging to come to The Mol.
As Stu sez, no fuckin’ vacancies!!!!!
FOwb
Quite agree Clive – Class is permanent – NOT a half season wonder.
We are putting together a dream.
Never go back.
I guess it takes a big man to apologise Ben. It would be great if Moxey and Morgan apologised as well for serial offences, but that ain’t gonna happen, ever…
As for Conor Coady, I’ve always rated him but he was played all over the shop and his form suffered. I met him in London at a players/fans get-together before the Fulham match at Craven Cottage. He was very chatty and interested in why I, as a Londoner, supported Wolves. He came across like Emlyn Hughes. We both agreed Newcastle and Brighton were going up. As for the playoffs, he reckoned Huddersfield were going up, and told me why. I said Fulham. He didn’t reckon Fulham. The next day Wolves beat Fulham easily 3-1, so I thought Conor was right. A week or two later Fulham thrashed Huddersfield 4-0, so I thought I was right. It’s a funny old game, but clearly Conor Coady can read it well.
I hear Coady was wanted by Newcastle, Huddersfield and Sheffield United this season, but he has stayed loyal to Wolves. Even some Liverpool fans want him back. No way, his future is in the PL as Wolves captain and heir apparent to Emlyn Hughes.
Did anyone else notice the Plan B employed by Nuno against Fulham on Friday night?
It shook me to my boots and stood out like the proverbial sore thumb. He knew Fulham were a good attacking side that liked to play footy, he also knew their defence was suspect and running at them unhinged them.
What I spotted straight away and check back on all our games if you wish, you will see this is a new tactic, but right from kick off for about 15 minutes, we were firing off long loping balls from all parts of the pitch for Douglas, Jota, Doherty and Cavilerio to run on to. This disrupted Fulham right away and they just ran around looking for the next bloke to mark. Then we got back into our stride passing and holding the ball and this change again completely threw them.
Then after we’d tired them out with our long passes then Samba style passing, Ruddy did something that changed the game again, once again this is something he just does not do as a matter of course, Douglas and Doherty were sitting hugging the line in oodles of space, So Ruddy was chipping the ball over the head of their attacking forwards into a great gap to the feet of Douglas and Doherty, he was actually starting the moves that were ripping the defence open.
Ruddy has been at fault for a couple of howlers in the past (IMO) he does like to stand forward of his line on set pieces (I’m no goalkeeping expert, but it has caused him problems on a couple of occasions. But, Friday night it was obvious that someone had been working on this with him. His long kicks from goal, (uncharacteristic of the new style of play) were destroying Fulhamu.
So well done Nuno’s team of backroom staff, homework on Fulham done 100%, executed 100% and 100% it worked.
NB.
Wolves have hired Man Utd’s football analyst and a Guy from Barcelona has been brought in for scouting in Europe “as money will be made available for Nuno to complete his plan”.
The guy is immense.
I called for him to be made Captain at START of last season.
He hasn’t let me down.
Enjoyed your comments Ben. Surprising no one has made the comparison with the most successful conversion from midfielder to centre back. A certain Frank Munro. The best centre half I ever saw play for the club . Conor looks as if he has the ability to follow in Frank’s footsteps
Here’s that piece on us having money to spend in January…
https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2017/11/07/wolves-hire-ex-manchester-united-and-barcelona-staff/
I confess to moaning, like a moaning man from moaning city, with Cody’s midfield performances. They were generally rubbish, with the odd decent game thrown in.
To see him today I am gobsmacked at the transformation in him. Nuno is obviously very astute and the way he has brought Cody, and others, to where he is now is outstanding.
Sorry Conor – I have been a tit and am so glad to be proved wrong.
My local championship teams in west London are interested in the Iranian striker Saman Ghoddos. He’s playing for a Swedish side and has Europa League experience. This season he’s apparently scored 15 goals and turned down the chance to represent Sweden, instead opting for Iran. QPR were hamstrung by FFP rules and couldn’t put a deal together this summer for £2mil but will try again in January. Fulham are now interested as well and I believe we are too. We must be favourites? Looks like £4-5mil now.
I think footballers need to feel they fit in.
Coady is a different person to last year.
Perhaps, as Saiss implies in a recent interview, he didn’t like playing a game, where the ball is hoofed over his head.
It is a bring down and like the rest of the team, under Lambert, he wasn’t much good.
However, pre-season, a perceptive chap like Nuno, probably noted his ‘Scouse humour’ could be used to help unite the team and then, after watching his potential, noted how he could be developed. He gave Coady, pre-season a confidence to add to his intelligence and as a consequence, we have a very good footballer on our hands.
But we need to remember football is a team game and singling out individuals needs to be seen in the context of those around them.
I really like Bonatini and Neves but I can understand how others think Jota & Boly are stand outs.
Saiss seems to be turning into our Fellani, but it is all about the team…
We have a great one and long may it last!
Makes a change from last season. Then we all agreed we had but one standout player, Costa. Now Costa has been overtaken by a quite few others.
Coady is an irrepressible Scouser, on and off the field, always talking/geeing up others. In other words a perfect captain. Batth is just too reserved in my opinion to be an effective leader. There was some talk in the summer of Miranda being groomed as captain but thankfully that was just talk.
I said earlier that Costa may struggle with the new style Nuno brings in and may just have been well suited to the situation with Lambert and the surrounding players.
Hope he adjusts to his new responsibilities under Nuno because he certainly has the raw talents.
Interesting character Coady. We seemed to buy him as a defensive midfielder to protect KMac, but in his heyday at Melwood he seems to have been considered a box to box player with a good engine and a good range of passes. I remember reading that Carragher was very disappointed that Liverpool let him go to Huddersfield. He thought he was a potential Gerrard replacement. Clearly very enthusiastic I remember him throwing himself into tackles in a pre season friendly with Villa. Then putting everything into the role he deservedly got sent off against Brighton. He was like a puppy bouncing around then getting told off and looking dejected. He was going backwards under Jacket, Zenga and Lambert. But he still brave, had a good footballing brain, spotting dangers and opportunities, a good range of passes and a decent tackle. He just needed to cross paths with a coach that could find the right role to utilise the abilities. What makes it so amazing is that Nuno spotted it in a couple of weeks pre season.
That’s the difference Jaco, this manager and his very able staff.
I think of all the years Stuart Gray kept his job while managers got fired around him, and the beyond satire of our fitness coach being Tony Daley….
This club is now being run professionally for the first time since possibly Stan Cullis. Makes a difference doesn’t it!?
I think I might be a day late but better late than never.
I would like to wish, on behalf of all us bloggers scattered around the globe, a…
VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THOMAS!!!
May you see many more mate and continue to keep us all in order throughout these turbulent but rather exciting times.
Big hugs (manly ones in my case of course) from Mark & Sue. xxx
I didn’t know that DG, but I can only concur most wholeheartedly. Happy Birthday Thomas!!! 🙂
I don’t think any of us knew this milestone DOOG.
Not easy to keep a secret now though… perhaps Thomas is in serious training mode for his marathon next year that he hoped to slip under yours and now our radar….
Best wishes for your birthday Thomas…
Mike and Lilian ….
Yeah, birthday salutations from this side of the pond too.
Sneeky eh.
Happy Birthday Ed, from Jenny and Stu.
On the subject of age……
Likewise Thomas, ‘penblwydd hapus’, which I’m told is Welsh for Happy Birthday. Heck, I think I’ll stick to English.
Maybe not, Exiled.
You struggle with that as well!!!
What you say gringo?
Happy Birthday Thomas.
Anyone else sick to death of all these international breaks?
Bring back football that actually means something. I mean tonight we saw George Saville, international footballer extraordinaire for heaven’s sake!
Roll on Saturday 18th November!!!!!
OODCL
See you there Bedders, twelve o’clock sharp, British rail permitting. FOWB !!
Witley – nearer the time we will exchange phone numbers so we can keep in touch for the meet up. The four of us Bedford Wolves will be in The Three Guineas for 11.45am. The Newark Wolves (Ian & Sue) will be joining us hopefully and there should also be an old school mate of mine who now lives in Reading. Any more for anymore?
Really looking forward to a new ground Bedders. It is a 150 mile drive from Newark so we are setting off early. A46, M1, A34, M40 and A43 and hopefully in to Berkshire for 1ish. Will contact you en route. Hotel at the stadium has a few bars though if we are pushed for time. Kingsize room also would fit you, BOG, Witleys and anyone else ? Party anyone ? Looking forward to meeting up with a few bloggers again. Newark Wolves “Ay we”.
Feliz aniversário Thomas
I’m with you Bedders still when we start again we get 3 games in 8 days
I’ve been listening to Radio WM over the last few nights and see that that very nice man down the Shite Mr Poohless is a tad unliked – those fekers were crying out for him and now they’re just crying – can see him signing Rory Delap in Jan – lmfrabato
Can’t wait to see us swop places in May next year COYW
Poohless can do with some Rory Delap throw-ins? Throw in the towel more like it now ‘cos his time is at an end. If they’d replaced him going into the international break they would have a better chance. As it is, teams below them are in a false position and will gain ground. As dire as the Crystal Palace position looks, Woy will not be welegated…
A weely agwee that woy will keep palice up and whoever the fek is at the Shite will be taking em down… Poohless will be long gone after they hit Relegation before end of Nov and bottom for 1st Jan
At the start of the season I place two bets involving The Mighty Wolves and the Shite.
Bet 1 = Wolves to be promoted and The Shite to be relegated @ 41:1
Bet 2 = Wolves as champions and The Shite to be relegated @ 118:1
The same bets today:
Bet 1 = 4.65:1
Bet 2 = 3.08:1
I think these crazy guys at BET365 know a bit about football
I’ve been told Poohless has never been relegated – which I agree with, but, who said he’d be there when they went down.
Roll on May – £795 better off and next years season ticket paid for by the Shite – ne ne ne neeeer neeer I’m lovin fekin it 🙂
WickWack,
Woy of the Wovers will stay up and West Bromwich Awful will go down.
Well done with the wagers. Wish I’d had some of that but I did nab the main one with BetVictor, 16-1 on Wolves for the title, way back in June. As pre-season progressed I was even more sure.
WickWack,
I welly like that & fought it was jonafon woss that was answewin for uwe
lmfgo
PS congrates to Leo on his player of the month 🙂 🙂
I wheely don’t appweciate you making fun of people’s speech impediments.
Paul Merson has been saying some really good stuff about us this week, reckons we will go up as Champions this season.
Pooolis chipped in too……
My wife says you are being cruel to animals, funny though
Nice pic of Poo-less but where’s the baseball cap?
In his hand with the Nike tick
After a long chat about all things football, my good friend Mark Davies and I agree that we both want the shit to stay in the Prem, at least until we get there, hopefully confirmed in March!
Next season we can totally humiliate them at least twice, as they then get relegated with a record low number of points.
Clueless poolis has put football back a generation in that part of the world, and should be put out to graze along with wernick, mcdickwadhead, and that twat from preston.
If we draw them in both cup competitions as well it will be sweet indeed to cream them four times in one season!
I’m with you on the international break thingy, Bedders.
If it wern’t for the Champions League, with its ridiculous number of money grabbing games, there would be plenty of mid week dates for internationals. There is far too much football nowadays, all money driven, and quality and standards are now for the most part in the toilet. The same teams, year in, year out, usually “qualify” for the two European competitions, coz they have the most money in their respective countries, and zero opposition, and quite frankly, its got really boring.
However, in two years time, Europe is going to be steamrollered by one of the original pioneers of international club football, our very own Wolverhampton Wanderers!!
FOwb
Got to disagree with you CFH
History to repeat itself from 2009 – Wolves up as Champions and the Shite down on bottom….
Properly FOwb
While we are apologizing, I’d like to apologize to Jeff Shi. He seems to be doing a wonderful job and has chosen people below him who can get the job done.
Well done!
Nice article Ben….
Yes I admit I was another who doubted his ability and overall contribution to the team (not the only one by any means) – as Bedford Wolf will no doubt testify listening to my moans last season.
Shows how little I know and what a blinding job Nuno is doing at Molineux….
On another matter a word of congratulations to the army of Wolves fans at Anfield last season….allow me to explain
On behalf of my brother-in-law I had to telephone HMRC this morning on an infuriating and long standing tax matter. It was clear by the responders accent the call centre was on Merseyside.
After checking the issues behind the complaint he informed me HMRC would have to call back and he then asked for a phone number and a password they would need to ask me to confirm I was the right person at the end of the telephone.
“Wolverhampton Wanderers” I replied.
He let out a chuckle.
“What’s wrong with that?” I enquired.
“Oh nothing at all” he quickly responded “I am a red and your reply reminded me of the FA cup match at Anfield last season when Wolves beat us. Your fans were the loudest I have ever heard at Anfield without a doubt”.
Take a bow those who made the journey………………………………..!!
He also said that Wolves were a “proper club with proper supporters unlike the glory hunters elsewhere” – referring to certain clubs in London and Manchester”.
Nice words.
Finally…
England 0 Germany 4 no Kane – no goals. Hope I am proved wrong!
I’m taking a bow BOG… What a day … was there along with Bedford, Stuwolf and Jen, Brompton, Newark Wolves, Everton Taxi drivers, London Wolves loyal, Weatherspoon’s staff, 6000 Wolves fan in Weatherspoons …… what a day… can’t remember much else…
Twix,
I’m bowing by your side mate
2nd best away day ever
Was in Adelphi Hotel at 8.45 with “on the ball travel” Tetleys on draught (tasted like double cream only better!) at £1.80 a pint
Game was brilliant & sharing that with 7,999 others made it special.
What a day – thanks for the memories again.
COYW
So our Leo, has picked up two awards for the month.
Not bad for a non striker with only ten goals!
Hope Nuno does not get any manager of the month awards coz we all know thats the kiss of death!!
But, several of our hoodoos have already been banished this season, not winning in November, not being any good after an international break, etc. etc.
If things carry on as they have, come December 25th there will deffo be a new Messiah, worshipped from deepest darkest North Houston!
187 hours until Reading kick off. Not that I am bored or anything. Lots of exciting things to do like drive past Sandwell Town and draw the curtains. Choose some new bog role. Pack of basic 12 or luxury 6? Examine a Lion Bar to establish if there are any bits of lion in it. Visit a selection of Spar shops and award points for the most well lit. Decide if it is time to once again order a pickled egg with your pie and chips. Run down Smethwick High Street shouting ‘Tony Pulis, your football is fucking brilliant’ and then go in The Blue Gates pub in a Wolves shirt whilst doing the samba. Whilst in the pub go to the bog (if still alive) and write ‘fuck off West Brom-Wolves ay we’ on the wall. Then run off rather quickly jump in a taxi and say ‘tek me um to the home of exotic footy’ The taxi bloke, obviously knowing his football will deposit you in Waterloo Road.WV.Oh well time to watch some boring rubbish now at Wembley……
As I wrote earlier – no Kane no goals….
Having said that we did not concede!!!
I can see a place for Coady in this England set up, should and could of won last night.
Bedders, 07966 221601.
Just clicked on the Express and Liar and nearly had a heart attack, obviously they have been hacked over night, no one in there right would have placed that add on the mighty Wolves page, WTF !!
Just had a look what your post was regarding mate and I couldn’t believe it either. Advertising tickets to see the shite on our page ! Although we won’t be the only unhappy ones as the same advert is on Walsall and Villa’s pages also.
” right mind ” even.

Wolves ‘to beat Arsenal for Benfica star’ as Jorge Mendes pushes Portugal U21 international to Molineux
Who would you rather play for?
A pensionable French guy, well past his sell by date, or a fellow Portuguesian, who’s star is on the up and up?
No brainer, methinks!
He’s Diego, NOT Diogo ?
Wolves have apparently signed ex-Liverpool & Manchester City defender Diego Lattie after a successful trial. [Source: @Wolves_Academy] #wwfc
Does anybody know if there are restrictions on the number of foreign players we are allowed to take on, either on loan or permanently? I only ask because in addition to Tim’s reference above to Joao Carvalho, we are also being linked to a loan move for Rafa Silva http://sportwitness.co.uk/rafa-silva-wolves-january-loan. And all this in addition to the back up striker to Bonatini that I believe we are looking to sign in January.
While we’re in the EU,I don’t think there’s any restriction on players from EU member states we can use. When we leave, that may change, depending on government policy.
Very interesting article in the Mirror – sorry don’t know how to post a link. Essentially outlines Fosun’s plans – promotion, establish AND make an instant impact in the PL and get into the Champions League asap. Next Summer, assuming promotion, money will be unlimited with no player out of bounds.
Works for me!

I can’t imagine our Mick saying, put a shift in love.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/4896920/liverpool-england-world-cup-winner-morgan-gibbs-white/
A bit concerning about the stories emerging about Klopp being after our World Cup Winner.
Call me stupid or thick (you’ll have to get in the queue) but why can’t we offer Morgan Gibbs-White new terms until he’s 18 but Liverpool apparently can?
If he’s under contract until 2019, he’s under contract until 2019.
It will be a big test of our ambition to see what happens in the next couple of months but, realistically, who is he going to have a better chance of playing first team football with?
Answers on a postcard addressed to Mr M. Gibbs-Wright.
Or even Mr Morgan Gibbs-White.
When I said Gibbs-Wright I was Gibbs-Wrong.
No problem.
Two Wrongs don’t make a Wright.
4,000 sell out for Reading!
Wow!
Can’t wait to get there and, with my fellow Bedford Wolves, BOG, Rhys Lightning and Notts County meeting up with Newark Wolves, Witley Wanderer and son and, hopefully, London Wolves Loyal.
Some very serious and sturdy drinking trousers required for sure!
Any other bloggers going and want to link up just let me know on either dave@mcgirls.co.uk or 07709491138.

Fuck off Tony Daley !

See you at Reading Matt ?
No ticket as yet
Anyone got a spare or know to one ?
In this international break I thought I’d share a bit of Wolves trivia, with an international flavour to it. Apologies if you already know the background story.
When I was surfing the net in the summer I came across a picture of the Doog staring back at me on an Italian blog! http://tonyface.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/derek-dougan.html.
Tony, who runs the blog, is into all things 60s and English: films, mods, music and football. He has already done pieces on Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris, Johan Cruyff, Bestie amongst others. Tony’s biography of the Doog was comprehensive, from the early days with Distillery right through to management and the Doog’s attempt to introduce shirt sponsorship to English football at Kettering Town. I guessed all, or most, of this is taken from Wikipedia or an obituary.
(BTW you can do an Italian-English translation online using Google.) Tony also posts a few good photos of the great man.
The bit that intrigued me was about the Doog’s psychedelic single! What? Yes, ‘A Goal for Dougy’ was apparently recorded by the Doog in 1968, says Tony.
The Italians who commented on the blog mainly discussed early shirt sponsorship in Italy. But one comment did suggest that the whole psychedelic single thing was a fairy tale, a well-known hoax. I figured what a great hoax that after nearly 50 years gets to Italy and still has legs.
Tony goes on to say how the Coventry-Wolves match in April 1967 that decided who would be promoted as Champions of Div 2 was influenced by Doog’s music sideline distracting him!
Anyway, I tried to find out more about the Doog’s psychedelic single. Wikipedia also mentions it! Must be true! The reference there is to a newspaper report in the Guardian on 1-4-2011 https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/apr/01/derek-dougan-psychedelic. Take a look, it’s a good read but utter nonsense. This was a newspaper April Fools Day joke, a hoax that still goes around! It hasn’t taken 50 years to get to Italy just six. The Doog was such a colourful character I think I would have been duped by the Guardian’s article had I read it back in 2011.
Let’s get Tony to do a piece on Peter Knowles or Waggy or the Juventus-Wolves game when Fabio Capello gobbed on Phil Parkes to try to get him to retaliate and then get sent off, the dirty bastard. Or bring him right up-to-date with the amazing tale that is unfolding here at the Mol today.
I heard about that Guardian report when it came out and for a moment I was prepared to be taken in by the Doog’s apparent preponderance for Hendrix, Barrett and all things Psych.
What gave it away as a piece of hokum was of course, the date, April 1st and the writer, Lila O’Forp, which didn’t take long to work out was an anagram of ‘April Fool’.
A lovely story though.
Don’t you just love life when your football team is top of the table, you have tickets for their next sold-out away game, and then you find out that you are going to be a granddad again.
I’m really getting pissed off with all this talk surrounding Wolves, it’s getting dead boring.
Wolves after Rafa Silva from Benfica, hailed as the new Eden Hazard.
Wolves after Diego (not Diogo) Calvalhao from Porto, Mendes touting him to Wolves, with Arsenal banging the door down to get him.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham in a race to snap up Morgan Gibbs Wright (sorry Doog) for £5 m.
Fosun alledgedly declaring, if we get promotion this year there will be Unlimited funds for Nuno in a warchest to keep us up.
If we don’t go up this year, there is a Summer warchest to get us up next year.
It’s all very mundane and boring, bring back MacDickwadhead, Morgeed and Monetbags and Tony the Unfitness coach Daley.
Oh yes, and there’s all this crap about a new ground, yawwwwwwn.
FFS, how I’m missing the old days.
Me too Stu. I’m going to complain about this to someone. We’ve got nothing to moan about anymore. I used to look forward to giving Moxey a good kicking (in print) every Monday. I’d have given him a good kicking in person, chance would have been a fine thing. Now it’s like we’re always quoted in the same sentence as Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs when chasing new players. Just who do we think we are playing fancy football like a top six PL club? Getting above ourselves.
We’re even after the “new Eden Hazard”. Bloody hell, we’re probably in with a chance of signing the old one next season!
And, what’s wrong in sitting in a leaky old stand in Molineux? That’s character building. Bit of rain didn’t do anyone any harm and gave us something to talk about. Now we’ll probably have a shiny new world-class stadium that will just shut us all up.
I’m beginning to check our the Baggies fan pages. Makes me nostalgic for proper hoofball, puttin’ in a shift. Pooh-less, don’t you just love him? What a guy! There’s proper moaning on those pages, relegation, relegation, doom and gloom, just like the good all days at Wolves. Sob.
Dances,
Take a look at this shite, FFS, have we got to start watching this kinda football now, after all this Samba style shite we’ve endured for the last 3 Months, for Dog’s sake our poor hands are gonna be red raw with all the clapping and me throat, well, I’ll be hoarse for a Month. The cheeky chappie has even got that French bloke Giroud trying to look just like him.
My appendage is starting to go iffy at the thought of all this stuff.
Now they’re on about buying that ex Saudi reject Bonatini, what next Nuno.
Can you imagine what our near neighbours are gonna be saying……….
🙂
Well here’s the piece, you judge for yourselves, do we really need to be watching this crap week in week out.
You bet your bippy we do……
https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/watch-why-wolves-fans-should-be-getting-seriously-excited-about-internationals-potential-arrival/
Fancy feet I’ll grant you, but can he kick shit out of the opposition? No.
If he wouldn’t be man enough for Mick McCarthy, do we want him? Yes.
Not related directly to us but…
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/nov/13/leicester-owner-king-power-face-corruption-charges-thailand
Read about that.
Prince Charles has connections there and has played for the King Power polo team.
You know, this is going to be one crazy ass team if we get promoted!
If we are bringing in new players in January, are we going to have to get rid of some players?
Any suggestions as to who will leave to make room or will they just wait until the summer, when lots of players will come in and, presumably, leave.
Anyone need an adult ticket for the Reading game.
Due to a party we now have 1 ticket available, need to know ASAP.
Stuwolf
Forget last post.
TICKET SOLD.
The pull of the new Wolves
Try Matt ( London Wolves Loyal) Stu, I heard he was looking for a ticket.
Strange thing is, it’s been snapped up by a guy from London.
How weird is that,
Thanks anyway buddy.
Hi bloggers,
I know it’s a long shot – but – anyone know any coaches going to Reading with four (yes 4) seats available? (2 adults + 2 teens)
Got car trouble & looking for alternate option.
Ideally going from Wolves before I get a shite load of options from Inverness, Houston or Sarfend!
I’ve tried the usual WWFC, Tatter, Cannock, etc but no luck
Also anyone know if there’s any special trains these days.
Thanks in advance.
FOwb
Rick Rack.
The Wolves DSA are taking two coaches, well a coach and a mini bus which I am driving. I’ m sure we can get you on, but we would have to charge you as you are not members. We are the able bodied coach so everyone is ambulant (No wheelchairs).
We leave the same time as the Wolves official coaches and from the same place too, (back of the Northbank) 10-30am leave be there 0930am.
If your serious, call me tomorrow am and I will sort it out.

STILL LOOKING FOR READING TICKET
Anyone know to one?
Matt,
I genuinely thought you had got one, as they were posting about you all meeting up for a beer on Saturday before the game. I had one yesterday but it went in minutes, sorry buddy. But I will keep my ears open for you.
Thanks stu … I’m still looking
With the largest Italian community in England, apart from London, half of Bedford is in mourning today.
The other half can’t stop laughing. We will be spared the blaring horns, motorcades and general machismo next Summer.
What a shame.
Hahahahahahaha etc
Bedford
Its alright for you – as you well know my wife is Italian from Caserta, near Naples, and the family is in mourning. All picture – no sound.
Mind you as long as I get my fav grub – home made 10 layered lasagne I should be ok.
See you on Saturday
BOG
On the ‘what a shame the Italians haven’t qualified’ theme try and check out a really funny video featuring the main guy from the Sopranos receiving a phone call from the Swedish chef off of the Muppets whilst Abba’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’ plays in the background. It’s hilarious.
OODCL
Hahaha , loving the itis not qualifying, over here all the World Cup Pre and post game footy shows are usually bosnich ( who I like as he calls it as it is) and a bunch of second hand itis , perlo, perlo , perlo and “where does England go from here “
Well we go the feckin World Cup , where the feck do you go Italy muahahaha
Still probably out at the group stages if we don’t play all the young dudes mind ! But we will still be basking in the glow of championes at wolvo so who cares
I think Whitely was right, we all need to go and read some of the articles on Musings From Molineux. Thanks for the tip, I would encourage all to try this one for size, very impressive,
https://musingsfrommolineux.wordpress.com/2017/11/09/talking-tactics-nunos-noggin/
Thomas you should try and sign this guy up, he would be a great addition.
Thanks for sharing Amber. A really interesting read. It will be interesting to see what tweaks Nuno makes come January (and who comes ins and goes out). And of course, Costa’s season hasn’t really taken off yet.
Fascinating read. The guy knows his stuff and explains himself clearly. Ta for the link Amber.
Took me an hour to read it, but certainly worth the read.
What’s the next match you are attending buddy, I aint seen you for a while.
Leeds a week today Brompto’. Then Bolton on the weekend. Looking forward to them. I’m getting withdrawal symptoms.
How are things with you my friend? Coming down to the Mol’ soon??
Yes, I will be at the Leeds game mate. I am parking at APV and popping in for a coffee. I will be there around 1830 hrs ish.
Depending on traffic etc, I’ll try to catch you there.
How the times they are a changing. POORTHORNS: Pulis is shit. His football is shit. We are sick if it. Never going again whilst Tony is in charge We are bored shit less. We don’t have a shot in goal. Where the fuck is Rory Delay when you need him. The Board is shit. Our Chinese owner is a pauper compared to the dirty filthy Dingles. THE TEMPLE(Molineux Stadium) :Nuno is ace and I want him to have my babies. Our football is sublime. Cor wait for the next match. Jeff is ace. Ruben is ace. Jota is ace. Fuckin everyone is ace. Even Thelwell. FOSUN are ace and will see us having a party in Barcelona in about 104 weeks time. Morgan Gibbs-White world cup winner. Rich ay we (compared to the impoverished Unwashed at Smethwick Town). Forever destined to dwell in our shadow. Love is all around in WV1.What is not to like chaps. Oh and got 3 tickets for Small Heath on Dec 4.And got the Mon and Tue off for beer an all . splendid. PULIS AND MEGSON MUST STAY!

Saturday v Reading: one of the Bedford Wolves has fallen by the wayside (groin strain) and so we have brought on our ‘sub’ – Matt aka London Wolves Loyal.
Following on from the ‘what a shame the Italians haven’t qualified’ theme – what a shame the Republic of Ireland haven’t qualified and that ‘lovely chap’ James Mclean won’t be going to the World Cup. Maybe if he had a brain and some decency and worn a poppy all these years things might have turned out differently for him.

Joining into the “kick a dog while it’s down theme”
Ireland were doing really well, then that Crying, lying, cheating Harry Arter made the shittiest of passes to Ward giving him no chance, Ward tried to play it round the Danish playe who mugged him and went on to lay the ball on for a goal.
The commentator & pundits at half time laid into Ward, for once it wasn’t his fault, it was that over rated, over paid A-hole Arter’s fault.
Only one British team left in the World cup, normal service resumed then, at least the kids did try last night and made a good Brazilian side work hard, credit where credits due.
Somehow, I think that Clive will disagree with you!!!
See you on the 22nd mate.
They didn’t have much of a chance. Brazil plays like Wolves.
I thought that too Tim.
An Irishman, Scotsman and Welshman walk into an Italian bar.
The barman says stop cracking the old jokes.
Leave it……
Leave it…….
Witley …. got a ticket this morning and bedders tells me I’m on a minibus that you’re organising
Please tell me that you’re not driving it
Its only an eight seater Matt, not to sure on Bedders numbers, but if we are two many we can call a cab and form a convoy, with a Thousand screaming trucks and twelve long haired friends of Jesus, in a short cruise micro bus. And finally no, I won’t be driving anything on Saturday, like Bedders I will have my drinking trousers on. Can’t wait.
You better get your drinking trousers on old bean cos im with you …. i ve got one of bedders tickets.
So pleased for you Matt .. fancy Stuey flogging a ticket to someone else …. ought to be made to pay for a round of drinks …
Fat chance of that ..lol
Not a cat in hells chance of that !
Ohhhh Matron, Iv’e come over all flushed, buy drinks, my gosh I’m feeling positively faint.
If only Brazil had Leo up front. It’s just like watching The Wolves.
Nothing to do with this current thread but does anyone know how to persuade the Wolves web site to issue a ticket for match day parking. Every time I try to buy one nothing bloody happens and I end up spending stupid money on phone calls.
By coincidence Tipton, I’ve just bought one, and they emailed it to me right away. First time I’ve bought one and it worked just like the match ticket.
Just tried again still no luck what browser are you using
Chrome. If that’s what a browser is. Bit of a technophobe, me.
Just Park in APV mate. It’s free when you go in and have a beer or coffee. I do that all the time lol.
Yes but some of us have more principles than to go near that place – even to save a £5 parking fee! lol
Serves you right for being posh and owning a car!
Back in my day it was the number 11 bus down the Penn Road, and we walked…… to The Tiger pub, a dive of a place if ever there was, but the beer was cheap, the music was heavy and loud, and the tobacco smoke that thick you didnt need to light up!
Parking space indeed!
Next thing you’ll be trying to tell us the ground is always full and we’re playing fabulous football!!
About time the next prediction blog came out, I’m dying to hear how much fellow bloggers think of Dave Edward’s chances are of surviving until half time, without drowning in our liquid football!!
Fowb
It’s a bloody long walk from where I live and what is a bus anyway. Don’t exist in the sticks. But thanks for the sympathy appreciated as always
MENDES FRONTRUNNER FOR ALLI
Jorge Mendes is the frontrunner to win Dele Alli’s signature to his agency Gestifute, Sky Sports News understands. He is expected to switch agents when his contract runs out with agent Rob Segal and his company Impact Sports next year.
Yes but do we really want a serial diver like Alli at Wolves?
OODCL
More to the point, Bedders, is he good enough to warm our bench??!!
Apart from ditching The Money Shop as sponsors, removing the offensive Redrow advertising boards at the ground and re-instating The Liquidator as our running out anthem I’d love us to go back to this colour shirt again – much like old gold than orange or amber.
………………….and this shirt as the change kit. White with gold and black trim just like the old days. Perfick!
