Founded three years prior to Wolves, Bolton consider themselves the original Wanderers.

Ten minutes into this contest, they were the only Wanderers in it.
A snail start and generous set piece marking meant the battle was over before it started.
Not entirely unexpected though was it?
Recent exerts and a growing injury list. Confident opposition that hadn’t conceded a single goal in their four previous home matches. And we never get much at the Reebok anyway.
Still, disappointing.
Familiar defensive frailties reared their heads as the full-backs struggled with Bolton’s menace from wide. No massive disgrace in that though. Eagles and Lee are a cut above this level and playing with a swagger.
De Vries received plaudits for keeping the scoreline down, but I remain skeptical he’s as competent with his hands as he is with his feet. I hope he can prove me wrong.
Kevin Doyle provided some goal threat in the absence of Ebanks-Blake, seeing one header hit the bar and another well saved.
Cassidy was anonymous as the struggle to find Championship legs continues. I’ll be surprised if Sigurdarson doesn’t get the nod against Huddersfield.
David Davis hobbled off and became the latest season-ended casualty. Karl Henry must prove his worth.
Adam Hammill could also profit from others misfortune. He wasted a clear opening after being introduced for the final knockings, but must now be in contention to face the team he spent half the season with.
That fixture now assumes epic proportions as the points continue to be generously distributed amongst the strugglers.
It’s a battle we mustn’t lose.

One of the more exciting Championship relegation struggles – would be fun if we weren’t in it!
As you say though – MUST win at Huddersfield!
I didn’t expect us to get much there but if we lose next Saturday we deserve to go down. Saunders is inept
We need 2 wins from 5. Surely we can do that ? Must bite the bullet and play Peszko with Sigurdson at centre forward.
And I’d still have Batth in before Johnson
I too am flabbergasted by DS’s continued unwillingness to pick Pzesko at all costs. The problem now is that he cannot be match fit at what has become a critical stage of the season. Neither do I understand his reluctance to play the Sigg up front.
Agree despite our good run of late, Bolton apart Saunders has reverted to Johnson when Batth was finding form he drops him he finally played Cassidy and as I expected he had a poor game but saying that the service was not there also for me the biggest criticism of Saunders re: Cassidy is the lad was champing at the bit when he came back on form from Tranmere but what does Saunders do leaves him warming the bench for 2 months so he loses his sharpness and match fitness so when he does get a game or start a game he’s got to build that back up again so what does Saunders do takes him off at half time when for all intense purposes the game is lost unfortunately for Cassidy we don’t have the games left to give him to get up to speed Saunders should know this be a striker himself. Wether we stop up or not I don’t believe Saunders is the man to take us forward his team selection aren’t based on form his tatices are baffling and this creates confusion among the players.
I think you’re a bit unfair on Saunders mate.
He did put Cassidy straight in against Blackburn, a game in which he was ineffective. He also started at Millwall on top of sub appearances before another chance at Bolton. We’re not in a situation where we can give him games to find his feet. He needs to be good straight away.
As for Batth, I was at Barnsley a few months back and his performance was concerning. Harewood just bullied him out the game. I think that made Saunders think twice about making him first choice.
Next season will be the year for Cassidy/Batth, especially if we’re in League One.
The point im making is he left him on the bench to long when he came of loan. Cassidy was banging them in for Tranmere so what does Saunders do sticks him on the bench instead of putting him in the team straight away Siggi was struggling, Doyle was struggling as so was EBanks yes he had bits here and there but that was after spending weeks on the bench losing his sharpness and match fitness even Saunders has praised him. What gets me is why bring him back to sit on the bench for a month before he even got a sniff of action he’s proved at Tranmere he a decent striker 12 goals. And if you think Saunders is the man to take us forward next season what ever League we are in god help us.
Our struggle with relegation is a result of our season long form.
Understandable, given the fixtures over Easter & injuries, that we lost yesterday.
We have had one of the best ‘runs’ for years, in terms of wins; and although am underwhelmed by Saunder’s eloquence, whatever league we are in, he should stay as manager.
What are you saying Saunders is the man, I don’t think so I agree he inherited a poor squad in terms of morale, form and confidence but he does not inspire optimism with his tatices and team selections he just about got away with the win over Boro his substitutions nearly cost us 3 points he panics when we are winning and goes all defensive which means it backs to the wall for the last 20 minutes or so. If we get out of this mess and Saunders is still in charge would you trust him with a decent transfer budget if we get one that is could you see us making a serious promotion challenge next season or will it be another relegation battle, I suspect the latter.
I don’t think Saunders is the man, but my expectations for Wolves are now low.
We will not get a decent transfer budget, will we?
Is ‘What House’ a subsidiary of Redrow? – Probably –
At least there was some stability and verve in our Easter victories.
Recent history regarding managers is diabolical at Wolves.
By those standards he has done ok….
Remember expectations are low.
It will be a good summer if we avoid relegation.
In an ideal world get an Italian manager, they seem pretty good at the job.
Bang on Thomas, really dissapointed also for Doyle and Hunt who gave everything. Hope you are wrong about Hammil, he does not desreve to wear the shirt. I was standing behind the goal when he broke through and he was one on one with the keeper, he was favorite to meet the ball first and he didnt, no determination, passion or effort, which would sum up his afternoon when coming on ( more effort shown in shaking Freedmans hand at the end of the match). Ohara also remains unconvincing, not sure if he is injured, out of form or just seeing the season through, problem is not sure who can replace him.
Massive game next week – COME ON ME BABIES
For me, should have started with Henry and therefore a more defensive set-up. It was always going to be a tough game at Bolton and we should have been saving Davis until Huddersfield. Cannot believe our bad luck with injuries. Last few games will be nerve-shredding.
McAlinden was promoted after Ebanks injury. How do you rate him? He has the potential to become a top goal scorer, but is it too early for him? What’s his strengths? Otherwise Sigurdarson is truly the best alternative together with Doyle.
After a great run we’ve once again been haltered by injuries. Hammill or Pezsko on the right wing and Bjorn up front shouldn’t weaken the team too much. I’m not surprised if O’Hara’s legs are a bit heavier after the tight scedule in easter.
Greetings all from sunny Atlanta. Finally spring has arrived, shame the Wolves players against Bolton did not have a spring in their step!!
I’ve been reading comments on the E&S. Funny really when you read some of the comments that a 4, 5, 1 formation against Huddersfield will work. I think its dire next week, 4, 4, 2 a must, all out, go for it WIN. I think if we lose next Saturday, I think they should sack Saunders and get Martin O’Neil. We can just start fro there I think.
Of course, will tight wad CEO spend to get the right manager and, finally move Moxey out of football operations…
I welcome your comments gents..
I listened to the game, and it sounded like we did well to keep the goal differential to just the 2.
Didn’t ever expect much from this one so feel less dissapointed than with many previous losses.
The ongoing injuries are a concern however, Davies was really beginning to show his worth and has been a major factor in our recent good run of form.
For once the results around us wen’t reasonably well, although even having to watch for them shouldn’t have to factor in to it, but with the way things are right now, they may hace a huge bearing.
Next week is a must win.
Well, just come back from watching my son play. Bettshanger welfare 2 (his team) Dover rangers 2. Good match. Why do i mention this, well i don’t think Dean Saunders would have been out of his depth there. I noted earlier that we were going to come against a better team who are much better organised. Bolton are infamous for their fast starts. They got two goals, could have been 4 or 5 and then controlled the game comfortably. To my amateur eyes it called for a defensive 451 formation. Siggy or Doyle on their own, supported, from the left, ward, davis, hunt, henry, siggy. Back four, i would play baath instead of gorks.we were well beat and part of it was naieve, gung ho tactics.we have apaucity of qulaity and defunct of managerial organisation. I am sorry Mr Morgan, but if deano goes if we go down, and the odds aren t good, appoint some one else. However, please Mr Morgan, you can own the club we have a wonderful academy, you do great community work, but please stay away from advice of ex liverpool players, in fact get an independant reviewer to appoint the next manager. Its a debacle whats happened to the club, and the blame i feel lies with the owner. Guys after that display, who is confident in us staying up. I am not. I think it shows how far we have fallen and how far short we are of being a quality football team. Sadly i feel we have further to fall. Prove me wrong wolves.
i thought weeks ago wed be bottom by now and already gone . how grateful i am that we are where we are . the football yesterday was dire but at least we still have hope of staying up. if we drop the consequences are dire at best so i am refusing to give up even though i thought it all over. we MUST continue to get right behind the team until its over ….. wolverhampton is more than a proper working class town they have been blessed by a great football club with i reckon some of the best fans!! WTID
Only watched the highlights but for sure the keeper was at fault for both goals.
Should have done much better Doris.
Result was predictable so got to look for the positives, Bolton were always going to get through our defence so to go two down so quickly but not concede again for 80 minutes surely shows some determination or was it that Bolton eased off the pressure?
The only benefit of so many injuries is that we’re getting an opportunity to review more of the squad and work out who’s for keeping and who must go at the end of the season; after all I think most of us would have let Hunt go if he’d not stepped in for Sako. How many more capable players have we got who are not getting a game and how many salaries are being paid to players who should be gone?
I would like to know where the loan player has gone.
Whats his name? Dicko or something.
Why get a player in on loan to help out and not play him?
Is he injured? If so, don’t they do medicals nowadays?
All this about players being tired after the Easter program is utter bollocks.
How come other team’s players are fresher than ours?
Do they play less matches?
No, our lot are just lazier/worser trained/lacking in ambition etc etc etc
No excuse for losing at Bolton, bad hunting ground etc etc is again, utter bollocks.
We are crap, end of.
Clive your kind offer of two weeks board and lodging with as much free beer that
I can quaff is very generous.
My wife has a special birthday next year. One of the options we have discussed is a tour…..
around Texas. You never know……..
Is Dicko any better then what we already have?
If he is then why isn’t he playing?
If he’s not then why did we bother to bring him in?
This is exactly what Jezzer and Deano said we wouldn’t do.
I should think Dicko is the only player who would come -and he’s only here as astand by -we have Hammill and Peszco anyway, but there seems to be some reason why we won’t play them.
Got to say Dicko didnt impress much when he did come on at Birmingham, cant understand either why Peszco is not getting a look in, at least he takse a player on, which is more than can be said for Hammill
Not so many comments – to take an overview i wonder if football fans now are increasingly subject to a cycle of frustration and then apathy. When you look at league one there are few clubs who could ever hope to reach the Premier. When you look at the championship the most clubs can realistically aspire to is to be the next Stoke or Swansea. Meanwhile whats happening to teams like Stoke ? The fans become frustrated because they cant get to the ‘next level’ and the national media who mostly focus on the giants of the North west and London are just bored by them.
Nail on the head mate. Frustration and apathy.
For Wolves, what else is there left to say this season?
I think we’re all hunkering down and hoping the team can do enough.
Either way, the club must take giant strides over the summer to win back the support. Whether that’s a radical change of direction within the hierarchy or just obvious efforts to strengthen the team.
Sadly, I expect neither.
In the wider footballing circle, I think you’re right about there being cycles.
Stoke are an obvious example. In recent seasons they’ve reached the pinnacle of what they can realistically hope to achieve – midtable obscurity and a few good cup runs.
Now the natives are getting restless.
So Pulis has introduced one or two more technicians to the squad and suddenly they don’t look as compact defensively. Quelle surprise!
Sacking the manager, relegation and a stint in the Championship is their destiny. It might not be this season or the next, but it will happen.
Chop the top six off the Premier League table and that is the actual league that Stoke, Wolves and alike strive to compete in and win. To finish seventh in the top flight is as good as winning it because that is all we can ever hope to achieve.
That’s why the likes of Swansea, West Brom and even Stoke should treasure the good times because they’ve effectively reached the pinnacle.
Swansea in particular because they’ve done it with style and a cup victory in the bag. Their fans have enjoyed the ride up and seen some fantastic football to boot. I would say they’re currently the happiest supporters in the land.
Ha, good stuff. You’re completely right, Tom, it’s all about the money, but you never know what may happen in the future – it’s still worth dreaming of being amongst the big four and having european football at the mol! I do think there’s value and fun in supporting wolves no matter how well they’re doing though (but I have so say i’m not very qualified to say this as I wouldn’t choose to buy a season ticket these days).
Personally I think we’ll stay up – I think 4 points from 5 games will do it – but I don’t expect us to get far with deano managing us. I hope Morgan makes some steely decisions in the summer and that we can be challenging for play offs next year, like pretty much every season I care to remember in my life as a wolves fan!
Looking forward to a (hopefully) stress-free trip to the seaside in May!
Yes despite all the disappointments and wider frustrations it will be an exicting and nail biting end to the season. Without the injuries i would be fairly confident but its close to call now and the game against Huddersfield is huge.
Frustration and apathy, yes Thomas i feel both of those. But what i feel most of all is anger. Anger at what Moxey, for years, and now Morgan are doing to our club. Anger at the rubbish that is allowed to wear the old gold shirt and anger at the pathetic performances year in and year out. A company, in effect, that fails it’s customers week in week out and yet, the CEO keeps his job and his big fat pay cheque.
I’ll always love Wolves but i hate the people who are running it.
I think there are two leagues and then the rest. The first contains the Manchester clubs and Chelsea. In the next bunch come Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool then the rest headed by Everton.
“Midtable obscurity” or “establishing yourself in the premiership” – it depends on how you look at 7 – 17th. Depends on whether your glass is half empty or half full but I’d settle for a relatively safe premiership place right now but it seems light years away.
Would love to see some statement of intent in the summer but I won’t hold my breath. Wasn’t that supposed to happen with SS? A minimum two year plan which lasted 6 months and was never really backed.
Just a personal opinion which many will disagree with but I don’t think DS is the man to take us forward and establish us. There is a danger that if we stay up DS will be hailed a hero and stay – catch 22.
Success this season will be defined as avoiding relegation to the first division. Surely we ought to aspire to more than that.
I agree with Steppenwolfe. If we survive in the championship, Dean will be praised for keeping us up. If we go down, he still won’t be sacked because really he’s a League One manager, and in the absence of any ambition from the board, we’ll effectively have foregone any hope of attracting anyone more competent.
I don’t dislike Dean. He must be praised for improving the spirit of the team, and for attempting to sort out the defence. But overall I don’t think he’s the man for Wolves. If we survive in the Championship and Dean stays, I don’t think we’ll have anything other than midtable obscurity to look forward to next season.
Can any one tell me what’s happened to Peszko, Margreitter and Doumbia? Are they just so incompetent that we don’t even want them in the squad? Is it a question of fitness, or motivation, or what? If the rumours are true that we can’t play Peszko because we’d have to pay more to Cologne, then that’s a disgrace.
5 Teams separated by 1 point Blackburn and Barnsley both have 1 game in hand. This is going to be way too close to call and another nail biting finish to our season. I will have no hair at all at this rate.
On my return to the country after a coincidental upturn in our fortunes, I decided not to predict.
In the hope that we could get some kind of result at BW.
Imagine my horror to have texted a mate about a ticket for next weeks game when the reply came back we were two down.
That’s what the last two seasons have been, horror shows……
Think it is telling why anyone of experience and quality is not keen to join us on even a short term deal.
Club needs a thorough restructuring for what has happened has proved it isn’t working.
As ever, an astute piece of writing Thomas.
A couple of points are particularly apposite.
The defence looked all over the shop when faced with the pace of the Bolton forwards and De Vries may have made some good stops but at this level he just HAS to make the shots stick.
I played in goal – admittedly to a pretty ordinary standard – for many years but our coach used to say that it is a goalkeeper’s job to either hold a shot or make sure that he gets it away from the danger area.
Doris seems unable to do either of these basic things when under the cosh.
This puts extra pressure on the defenders who have to get to the rebound before the opposition forwards, and ours just aren’t quick enough.
That said, in spite of my prediction of a draw, I don’t think many of us really thought we would come away with any points.
The big must-win test is against Huddersfield, and I and Mrs DG will be living it up at a rather nice hotel just outside Dartmouth while the fate of our season goes a long way towards being settled at the Mol.
I shall be thinking of you all.
Give the lads a shout from me.
So few comments by Monday tells its own story, we’re getting lost for words and running out of optimism and anger is turning to resignation. Talking of which, Mr Moxey, isn’t it abouit time for you to go ?
John,
We may or may not stay up.. Dean Saunders may or may not be the man for the future. Our team may or may not need total dismantling to start giving us something to be proud of. All of this is to be seen and rightly so in other peoples hands…but the question should Moxey go has a definate “of course” answer for me.. We have seen this clown perform before Morgan got here. No intuition, no feel for the fans, repeated bad judgment when making decisions and the clus suffers while he stuffs his pockets with cash…
Sack the fat man for a brighter future..
I agree with all what you posted Thomas,
I was hoping to get something from the Bolton game only because the way we have been playing of late.
But the one thing that REALLY gets me is when we don’t turn up,WHY.
with every game so crucial why don’t they ?
We can’t afford to make anymore slip ups or else we’re doomed..
Disappointing amount of taker’s for season ticket’s,thats what you get Morgan Moxey for your lack of investment,Blame rests on you both for where we end up.hope we stay up because i’m one of the 9,000 odd who have done the deed.UTW.
How things have changed in a relatively short period of time, 15 or 16 months ago we were playing well enough to almost turn over Chelsea at home bar a bad refereeing decision over Lampard, nowadays we’re worrying over the prospect of a home game against Huddersfield!
Surely we’re better than this? A casual look at their fan’s blog site says something about the difference between the clubs as all it says is ‘no posts available’ obviously they lack the quality of our blog authors off the pitch but actually on the pitch they’re our equals at the moment which really is a true indication of how far we have fallen. It will be just our luck if their injured quartet and suspended player are all back for Saturday whilst our squad gets weaker by the day.
Calm down dear, ‘we never get anything at Bolton’… The ugly truth! I still think after the recent run of games we may just have enough to avoid the drop (albeit skin-of-your-teeth stuff) and there lots if crunch games to play that don’t involve us remember! Others will have just as many nail biters as us! I just found this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/predictor/default.stm – really interesting, well worth ten minutes of your time, be honest, be brutal… I got us finished on 54 points, losing on the last day and staying up – still going through the wringer, the only way the wolves rollercoaster can take you – we can do it! Be positive! However, after all that – where we go from there, well…
Bloody hell! I’ve just done that predictor thing and we are relegated on goal difference and just one goal at that. For a life long Wolves fan that sounds scarily likely.
Now THAT is tight, I have us staying up by 1 point, Bristol, Peterborough and Huddersfield to go down…and Hull to snatch the title (always said that Steve Bruce was a good manager…ahem)…what do I know!!…what I didn’t realise was how many big games are coming up at the bottom of the league, lots of us playing each other so it really will be down to who wants it the most, and despite last weekends set back I am blindly hoping that we have a bit of fight back in the side, quality I doubt, but fight perhaps?…massive game this weekend though, a win and things look a little more comfy again, anything less and the prediction table changes for the worse I am afraid…and that could be the difference!
UTW
who wants it the most ? Well, in today’s Express and Star DS says that Huddersfield need the win more than we do ! Need -want – apparently they’ll be trying harder than us then.
If our players had ‘wanted it’ earlier in the season instead of passing the ball about at the back like they were taking the piss we’d be up in mid table at least.
Just been reading the E&S article on the all time low early birds and the two disgruntled Wolves fans in the photo looked familiar. Could it be Ben and Pa?
http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2013/04/08/
I see that Matt Doherty is doubtful for Saturday.
Looks like it’s going to be a case of ‘whoever can stand will get a game’.
I made the point a couple of blogs ago that we only seem to comment on the blog when we lose.
Seems like most people have lost the will to say anything at all now.
Come on lads!
Thomas and Ben are taking the trouble to keep this going, the least we can do is to respond.
Only a few games to go and we can all have a rest.
How many thesauruses do you have to swallow to keep saying the same thing in different words?
I just want the season to be over, The Wolves preferably still in Division 2, ( I refuse to call it the “Championship”, that’s just utter bullshit PR ) and at least we will have a few months knowing we won’t get stuffed every week.
Then we can have long meaningful discourses on who should go, who should stay, and all that serious stuff of the off season.
Also, when the season is over, MrsClivefromHouston and I will be on the big silver bird to visit ancient parents in Penn, and then a 12 day road trip around Europe.
And, Mr Doog, how come you are deserting the lads yet again for a trip abroad to Dartmouth, when you’ve only just got back from Egypt?
Fair weather fan springs to mind. Bet you only go to The Mol when prawn sarnies are on the menu!!
Have to say, it is really nice to see Stoke and Sunderland getting closer and closer to the relegation mire in the Prem, and also see the shit losing at home yet again.
A merry FO wb to you all
I look upon it as spreading the word about the boys in Old Gold.
I had my picture taken in front of the Temples at Abu Simbel wearing my Wolves Premiership T shirt and now every street seller in Luxor is a Wolves fanatic.
I’d like to think I can do the same with the natives of Devon.
Plus, it’s one of the few perks of my job. I designed the hotel’s Christmas Card and they gave myself and Mrs DG a three day all inclusive break instead of cash.
It’s going back to the barter system – I encourage it with all my clients.
Panic over Big George is back in training.
Totally off topic, but interesting in a way.
As I walked around various stores today, and people realized I am English, quite a few came up and sad they were sorry for my loss.
?????????????
It would appear that the death of Margaret Thatcher has had a big impact over here, and she is fondly remembered by those of a certain age as being a big friend of the U.S.
Out of all the women in the world, she is the one I would have liked to meet, and sat down to talk with.
I don’t care what your political persuasion, that lady was the finest politician and Prime Minister we’ve had, certainly in my time, and I will never forget the way she stood up to, for the sake of the people, Arthur Scargill and his union bullies, and more importantly, stood up to, for the country, to the Argies over the Falklands.
She deserves a lot of praise for helping GB get back on its feet, in the eighties.
I for one will miss her.
Clive let me dance in peace, please.
Sorry Clive. Can’t agree with you on that one. I’ll leave it there.
Not looking to have an argument with anyone, we are all entitled to our opinions.
Clive, One assumes you remember that poster: a load of young Conservatives outside the Labour Exchange, and the heading ‘Labour isn’t working ‘. Unemployment at the time was one million.Within 4 years of Margaret Thatcher ,unemployment actually increased to three million. What would we think if we had a well paid chief executive who promised us Premier Football, feathered his own nest, and gave us third division football. But then again, wait a minute…….
How many more injuries do we have to endure, surely we can’t have any more
the squads decimated as it is.
one thing to bring a smile back as AlfWhite posted big George is back for the pre season i hope in the Championshite with a bit of good luck,by God we need it.UTW.
Here’s the thing that really pisses me off in all this mess we’re in … just how much fight other teams have in them compared to our team. Barnsley were able to claw back to a draw against the likely champions to be, Cardiff today, and Wednesday beat Millwall away. Why do we look at a 2-0 loss to Bolton as a foregone conclusion, or “justly beaten by a better team” as Saunders could be paraphrased from his comments? Why is an away loss to Bolton “OK” if Barnsley can draw Cardiff?
I’m sorry, but aside from the players’ lack of fight, I also don’t see any sense of experience or naus at how to grind out a result from Saunders. There has to be a certain amount of “knowing how to get a result”, be it a draw or a win, and I just don’t get a feeling of preparation for getting a certain result from a game from him. He should have got a point out of Bolton, and he failed.
The whole team needs to raise their level of hunger and fight if they really want to stay up. Because all the other teams around them certainly are and nobody else is going down by rolling over.
Come on Wolves, wake up!!! Look at Barnsley fighting! Step it up!
@clivefromhouston Thatcher’s policies were a disaster for the country and for the working man. She destroyed whole communities by closing industries and taking council housing out of public ownership. She ensured that the state was dismantled so that the poor, the destitute, the ill would no longer be supported. She was a politically destructive, corrosive and evil woman. It’s appalling to think that Americans would imagine we see her as some kind of heroic leader.
That aside, Wolves defeat at Bolton was disappointing but predictable. Avoiding relegation is very much a touch and go thing now. Saunders is a disasterous appointment as manager – our style of play has plummeted since Solbakken left. If we stay up there is no way Saunders will mould us into a football-playing team fit for the Premier League.
True we have shown a little more spirit of late – the determination shown in the Middlesbrough game was commendable. But we need to pass more accurately and move more intelligently, create space off the ball offering alternatives for the player in possession – do the simpler things better.
Do the players ever watch and learn from the habits of the top European sides? When was the last time we retained possession in the opposition half patiently probing for an opening that we eventually created through slick, quick interchanges and darting runs?
Points wise the next two home games are obviously critical – we are unlikely to fail in them and then go on to pick up points away to Charlton and Brighton. Four point minimum from the two games I’d say – a draw against Huddersfield would not be totally disastrous IF we then beat Hull.
Full Molineux support required for the team even if things start to unravel. Remember that desperately needed victory over Bristol City after the horrendous own goal did not appear likely at half-time.
@clivefromhouston Further, Thatcher, by destroying the unions, ensured that worker’s rights could be ignored – we now have short-term low-paid contract work with no long term security for a family man to build a career. That callous harpy allowed the executives of companies to award themselves richly in astronomical wages, additional lucrative bonuses and guilt-edged share schemes while at the same time they laid people off by closing factories and “streamlining” their businesses, outsourced work and enforced new contracts on employees that severed their rights.
And had her goverment been on the ball they would have been well aware of Argentinian intentions concerning the Faulklands. Their inability to forsee the invasion meant the loss of many lives and the cost of fighting an unnecessary war on the other side of the world.
Well said that man!
I’m afraid I’m with Clive on this one.
I don’t necessarily agree with all she did but Thatcher was a politician with principles and she fought for those principles with all she had.
Not for her the namby pamby “We can’t say anything against anybody because they might not vote for us” or “Let’s wait and see what the latest trendy minority says before we agree with them”.
She had her principles – right or wrong – and she stuck with them.
When she came to power the country was a complete basket case being run into the ground by the Union leaders. They didn’t give a shit for the workers. They were only bothered about their positions and their power and their perks (not much different from the bankers today). They thought they were above the law – and they were. The government could not do, or say, anything against them because they would bring the workers out and the country would grind to a halt.
Striking was called ‘The British Disease’.
We were a laughing stock around the world. Our car industry, once the greatest in the world, was being strangled by lazy workers who didn’t give a toss. I know, because my father was a director of Jaguars and took early retirement in despair at the standard of work and horrific laziness and over-manning on the production line. Every time he mentioned it to any worker, the shop steward was called for and they all downed tools.
You saying about people being laid off in factories is quite right. But I think you will find that those factories operated perfectly well afterwards because they had the correct numbers of workers, not the bloated over manning that the unions had insisted on.
The ‘Closed Shop’ was the biggest pile of crap of all.
I was working in an Advertising Agency in the early 70s and we were all forced to join a Union against our will because if our work did not have a union stamp on it, no printer would dare touch it and no newspaper would dare publish it, for fear of incurring some jumped up Scargilite’s wrath.
If Thatcher had not taken on the Unions and beaten them, this country would have been bankrupt years ago and been washed down the plug hole of history.
And, you are wrong. She didn’t take Council Houses out of public ownership – she let the public buy them. You ask anyone of the thousands who did that if it was a bad or good thing.
Also, when she was leader. She had clout on the Global Stage and we were looked upon as a big player. Now we have wets like Cameron and Miliband fighting to be second spear carrier.
There are a lot of people who have reason to hate her and there are equal amounts who think she was the best peace time PM we have had. There are valid arguments for and against.
Whatever you think of her, at least admire the fact that she had her principles and stuck by them. That’s what we elect our politicians for – not to change their minds when the public mood changes.
If you don’t like what they’re doing – vote them out. The country never did that to Thatcher so she must have done something right.
And to the people who had street parties yesterday celebrating her death (most of whom probably don’t vote anyway and were only out to get pissed, set fire to a few cars and chuck a rock at a rozzer) I say that’s fine, it’s your right.
But what would you say if I came round to your house and celebrated the death of one of your family?
If you are actually related to Margaret Thatcher DOOGooder, and it does sound as though you might be, I apologise to you. I’m not dancing on anyone’s grave, but I don’t see why that means we should just accept sentimental claptrap from the Right about how Thatcher was a “politician with principles right or wrong”. She wasn’t. She was wrong. And she made the working class pay dearly by destroying all the rights that generations of socialist heroes had fought for.
Closed shops were a guarantee that employees remained united in strength – nowadays anyone who wants to undercut a living wage by offering their services without the overhead to the employer of pension contributions, health and safety regulations, humane working conditions, sick pay benefits, insurance and so on can. And they do. And the capitalists love it.
Meanwhile The Sun and the Express and Star continue to promote their vile right wing propaganda that cutting taxes, slashing council budgets, demantling the public sector vilifying immigrants and those on benefits are all patriotic, good things. These vampires won’t be satisfied until workhouses are reintroduced.
Interestingly we have become bankrupted through the unregulated excesses of fat-cat bankers who’ve gambled our money in flagrantly dishonest way to make their millions and send the country into ruin. It’s Thatcher red-bracered Lords-of-the-Universe capitalist bully boys who’ve ruined the country.
There aren’t valid arguments for and against Thatcher. Thatcher was a disaster. Why should we admire her “principles” when her “principles” were that greed is good, that people don’t matter, that the winner takes all.
Thatcher took council housing out of public ownership by selling the stock off cheaply to tenants fully realising that in future years the councils would not have the money to replace them and ordinary people would end up with nowhere to live. She always dangled the “get rich fast” carrots in front of the working class and with the help of her right-wing press barons and industrialists sold them the dream that by owning a house and having shares suddenly meant they were rich. Lies, lies, lies.
Neil Kinnock said it all in June 1983
“If Margaret Thatcher is re-elected as prime minister on Thursday, I warn you. I warn you that you will have pain – when healing and relief depend upon payment. I warn you that you will have ignorance – when talents are untended and wits are wasted, when learning is a privilege and not a right. I warn you that you will have poverty – when pensions slip and benefits are whittled away by a government that won’t pay in an economy that can’t pay. I warn you that you will be cold – when fuel charges are used as a tax system that the rich don’t notice and the poor can’t afford.
I warn you that you must not expect work – when many cannot spend, more will not be able to earn. When they don’t earn, they don’t spend. When they don’t spend, work dies. I warn you not to go into the streets alone after dark or into the streets in large crowds of protest in the light. I warn you that you will be quiet – when the curfew of fear and the gibbet of unemployment make you obedient. I warn you that you will have defence of a sort – with a risk and at a price that passes all understanding. I warn you that you will be home-bound – when fares and transport bills kill leisure and lock you up. I warn you that you will borrow less – when credit, loans, mortgages and easy payments are refused to people on your melting income.
If Margaret Thatcher wins on Thursday, I warn you not to be ordinary. I warn you not to be young. I warn you not to fall ill. I warn you not to get old.”
He was right. And we didn’t listen, to some part because of that lying rag The Sun.
I am certainly not related to Margaret Thatcher and was brought up in a working class family who were staunch Labour supporters.
The one thing about her that everybody agrees on is that she divided the Nation.
It then only remains to decide which side of that divide you are on.
If Kinnock had won the election, the Unions’ grip on power would have been tightened and if you think that would have been good for the country, the workers and industry… well we disagree.
You can quote politicians until you are blue in the face but they are only spouting rhetoric to support their party.
But if you’re going to quote Labour politicians then you should not ignore what the most successful (and in my opinion most hateful) Labour PM said about her:-
“Margaret Thatcher was a towering political figure. Very few leaders get to change not only the political landscape of their country but of the world. Margaret was such a leader. Her global impact was vast. And some of the changes she made in Britain were, in certain respects at least, retained by the 1997 Labour Government, and came to be implemented by governments around the world. As a person she was kind and generous spirited and was always immensely supportive to me as Prime Minister although we came from opposite sides of politics. Even if you disagreed with her as I did on certain issues and occasionally strongly, you could not disrespect her character or her contribution to Britain’s national life. She will be sadly missed.”
I suspect we will never agree on this matter but I accept you have a valid right to state your case and respect your views.
I worry slightly that you don’t seem to want to offer me the same courtesy.
The one thing we do agree on however is that the Sun – together with the Mail – are lying rags….
Allegedly. (Just in case anybody from either of those notable publications reads this).
@clivefromhouston – If you want a woman to lionise try Aung San Suu Kyi, not the witch who thought that there was no such thing as society.
By the way Kevin, I also lionise Aung San Suu Kyi.
A woman of principles who stuck by them because she believed they were right.
Enough said.
Hardly enough said. Principles are tosh, if your principles are immoral and Thatcher’s were.
You and clive are supporting the Thatcherist revolution that said that the rich no longer need bother contributing to the public purse because after all they can afford expensive private services and don’t need to use the essential public services that the poor rely on.
Thatcher drew a line in the sand and said above this you are one of us, fully equipped to be self-sufficient on the riches you have inherited by your chance birth into the families of the wealthy. You deserve everything you have got and it’s good to keep on grabbing.
Below that line you are undeserving, work-shy scum deserving of nothing. We’ll sell you lottery tickets, fatty processed foods, gutter-press propaganda and misery – be thankful for it.
I’m sorry to all our blog readers about the can of worms I just opened, I didn’t realize we had Arthur Scargill’s son on board!!
I was not wanting a debate, but it seems there are some raw nerves out there!
I too was in the grip of the unions back in the early seventies, when I worked at Goodyears, on the Stafford Road.
Closed shop, one tiny slight to a “worker” and all out.
Countless hundreds of pounds I lost due to some bloke I’d never met having a tizzy in a tea cup.
What did I do?
Got out.
Went to work for myself and swore I would NEVER be involved with unions again.
I didn’t need some dumb prick from the depths of a Glasgow slum “negotiating”
my job for me.
To me unions = socialism = communism = dictators = end of liberty.
By the way, Kevin, my history may be a little rusty, but wasn’t Margaret Thatcher the daughter of a grocer, and lived above the shop?
If that was an inherited richness, then by the same logic, most of us were born into the same wealth, and can do for ourselves what she did for herself.
Anyway, as I said earlier, I didn’t mean this to become an argument, we all have our principles and ideas and opinions, and although I don’t agree with yours, I respect you for having them.
One thing we all agree on is we want The Wolves to win all the remaining games this season, stay up, and move on positively next season.
So, in conclusion, our two favorite rallying cries
COME ON YOU WOLVES
and
FUCK OFF w… b…
Mmmm… actually Clive your potty mouth upsets me too!
Socialism = individuals working together for the benefit of society as a whole. As Marx said “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”
Your idea of “freedom” is to allow a rich ruling elite to exploit and rape society exclusively for their own benefit. Result – an ever-increasing gulf between rich and poor, an explosion of exploitative, low-wage, insecure employment, gated communities, an increase in private security firms, increasing civil unrest and finally civil revolution.
My two rallying cries
Come on you Wolves.
and
Hurray for the Albion too. May both teams be meeting again soon in the real First Division, rather than the abhorrent Thatcherite Sky Barclays Premier League.
“Went to work for myself and swore I would NEVER be involved with unions again.”
Ayn Randism, eh. It was the unions that won you those workers rights, that living wage, those pension contributions, that job security, those health and safety conditions, that thriving Goodyear social club.
It’s a pity you were too selfish to put something back when the union required a mite of solidarity from you on behalf other less fortunate union members.
that annual leave, that sick pay., that…
When I think of all the sacrifices working men made to win those benefits for the ordinary working man that have been thrown away in one generation by those who had their heads turned by the lies, propaganda and repulsive ideology of Thatcher it makes my blood boil.
Yes but Kevin…do you like her not, please stop beating around the bush.
agree- unions were needed but they distroyed all our industries…the miners worshipped scargill as he pulled up in his jaguar after leaving his lovely home after filling his belly..smells like communism to me. the unions became the new rich..and loved it
The trouble with true Socialism is that it never works.
‘Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely’.
One of the few self styled Communist regimes left in the World is China.
Is that the sort of Socialism you aspire to?
Or is it the Tony Blair Socialism?
Whichever it is, your quote:-
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”
Rings a bit hollow.
Dear Oh Dear Oh Dear!
So Thatcher founded the Premier League did she?
I am not a big supporter of The Prem but I don’t think you can lay that one on her.
You’ll be saying she scored the goal that got the Baggies promoted next.
“So Thatcher founded the Premier League did she?”
Well indirectly I think you can make that case. No Thatcher, then no Murdoch, no Murdoch then no Sky, no Sky then no Premier League. Simplistic, yes but it was Thatcher that inspired the “greed is good” rampant unregulated consumerism that has resulted in the grotesque billionaires playground that is the Premier League.
So yeah, Thatcher ruined football too.
My Grandad and Dad were supporting Wolves when the players earned pretty much the same sort of wages as the working man – after all professional footballers are only kicking a ball around. Now we have arrogant young men earning more in a month than the average supporter might expect to earn in a decade. That’s Thatcherism. That’s your unregulated free-market capitalism in action.
Poor Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and co. fans no longer even have a football club left to support. All they’ve got is a multinational corporate merchandising machine that as a business has to guarantee that can never fail and thus ensures that it hogs all the resources and has the game’s authorities in its pocket. This isn’t football anymore.
If you are talking about the ridiculous wages players earn and disparity in club wealth, I think you should blame Jimmy Hill before Margaret Thatcher.
And whoever decided that the ‘home’ club should keep all the gate receipts instead of sharing with the away team.
And Bosnan for giving all the power to the players and took away transfer fees for the smaller clubs.
Nothing to do with Thatcher my friend.
Thatcher dividing Britain all over again, it’s what she would have wanted 😉
Good one, Jed. Smiley!
Thatcher was a lackey for the rich.
Everything owned by the people she sold (stole) to private enterprise.
Now we pay VAT on say gas, when prior to her, we owned it!
Phenomenal that people think she did anything, other than for greedy individuals, who put profit before people….
Or profits before football fans aka Moxey and Morgan
Up the Wolves….
I notice in this mornings press that Fulham and Stoke are supposedly set to battle it out for Berra’s signature in the summer. That man must have the best/worst agent in world football. He’s spent the last two years linking him with other ‘superior’ clubs through the media only for the reality to strike that nobody actually wants him. A message for you my friend-You’re client is shit! There’s no way he’ll get a prem club in the summer, in fact there’s only one championship club he’ll get and that’s Ipswich!
I’ve still not stopped laughing about Leicester buying Ade Akinbiyi off us for £5.5 million. Maybe I should have got over it by now.
Carl, what the bloody blinking blazes do you think this is, mate, a football blog or something? You can’t come here and talk about footballers! This is a blog for alleged failures and has-beens!
Oh, sorry. You’re talking about Christophe Berra. My apologies. Carry on. As you were.
How much did we pay for Berra again ?
Whatever it was, we wuz robbed.
Independent Poll:
Do you think football matches should mark the death of Margaret Thatcher with a minutes silence? Yes 5% No 95%
Thatcher despised the game.
No.
Football should keep to football, and politics to politics.
Sorry I brought up the subject, as an aside really, but some people need no excuse to pour forth hate and vitriol at the drop of a fuckin’ hat, and can’t let it go.
Potty mouth insertion intentionally.
Anyone who cannot see another’s point of view is akin to the religious fanatics of all brainwashed persuasions who preach love and peace, but will kill you if you don’t agree.
I’m off to watch Barcelona stuff Beckham and Co.
Have a nice day. y’all
“Potty mouth insertion intentionally.”
Yup, that’s about your standard. Best to stick to what you’re best at.
What I’m best at?
You come on here, spouting total utter political gobshite and fuck anyone who disagrees with you.
Well, Porter, listed below are all the salient, knowledgeable, well thought out points of your above diatribes.
Did I get them all?
Must admit Kevin, you sound a little bit like Rik from The Young Ones at the minute chap, only possibly a little more angry, you really need to take on board that other people have an opinion, even if they don’t agree with your own, if you can’t at least do that you come across as a crackpot you try and ignore in the streets to be honest? I can’t say I am a lifelong Conservative, or Labour or even Lib Dem supporter, I vote for who I think is talking the most sense and who I think will help me make me and my families lives better if I work as hard as I can…I have voted Labour and Conservative…both fucking hopeless to be honest but what can you do…now we only get to play one round on this golf course we call life, so enjoy the walk and smell the flowers as you go….and as ever
UTW
i know a liverpool diehard with a season ticket in the kop … cant talk politics at all with him like many others oop north cos they cant listen at all to any opposing opinion. reminds me of a north korean fat blokey. brainwashed and oppinionated .. would vote labour only -even if they didnt agree with the policies! weird !
@clivefromhouston
Still swearing? Mind that blood pressure old timer, why not take some ease and listen to Elvis Costello singing “Tramp the Dirt Down” or Morrisey’s “Margaret on the Guillotine” or Sinead O’Connor singing “Black Boys on Mopeds”. Maybe sign up at the local college for a night class in political theory?
@banburywolves
It’s all the irrefutable truth about Thatcher and her vile politics – nothing to do with opinion. Someone who thinks Thatcher was our greatest Prime Minister needs disabusing. She put the hate, not the great, back into Britain. To think otherwise is not opinion it is fantasy.
Political theory?
Now if that’s not an oxymoron then I don’t know what is.
And to someone who comes on here and tries to tell me what my opinion is, I have only one thing to say.
Go Fuck Yourself.
Dear me Clive, you really do prove my points for me, don’t you, when all you can resort to is obscene insults.
If you can bring yourself to apply some logic then you will understand that I am not telling you what your opinion is, I’m merely telling you that your opinion about Margaret Thatcher is erroneous and contrary to the truth of the matter.
Still being a Wolves supporter is one redeeming feature of your character, eh?
listen children..she divided opinion greatly mainly due to her policies but even myself who cant stand the tories saw the good and the bad things associated to her. whatever i think it has to be said that good or bad – she did manage to drag this country upwards at a time it was not unlike living within a dickens novel . whatever we think i do feel the bile and partying are really distasteful. maybe the thatcher haters should have had it their way…the unanswerable question is where would we be now?
‘your opinion … is … contrary to the truth of the matter’
Kevin, Kevin, for what its worth I (more or less) share your opinion of Thatcher BUT you surely know by now that there is no such thing as ‘the truth’, merely different peoples perception of what constitutes ‘the truth’. An analysis of pretty much any law case will reveal this to you (and I’m no lawyer).
Clive, I blame your ‘potty mouth’ on Thatcher!
I haven’t quite worked out why yet but I’m sure someone will come on the blog and put me right.
Well, the DOOGooder, she was only interested in education for the ruling elite wasn’t she. She’d be comfortable with a working class that prefixes all nouns with word fucking because that would help her to demonise them in the eyes of the middle classes, doesn’t it.
Words have power and presenting yourself as foul-mouthed, also carries the danger of presenting yourself as ignorant and brutish.
And again, that is your opinion, I have heard many more on TV and radio that are polar opposites to yourself, but I guess they are wrong and you are right, yes?
http://www.salon.com/2013/04/09/the_woman_who_wrecked_great_britain/
Thatcher’s achievements:
– Record levels of unemployment
– British manufacturing capacity halves
– Hospitals closed
– Hundereds of schools closed
– Deregulated the financial sector
– Introduced the Poll Tax
– Increased VAT from 8% to 17.5%
– Depleted Britain’s social housing stock
– supported the apartheid regime in South Africa
– called Nelson Mandela “that grubby little terrorist”
– haboured Chilean fascist leader Augusto Pinochet
– abolished free milk for primary school children
– covered up the police’s role in the Hillsborough disaster
– biggest transfer of wealth from poor to the rich
– failed to forsee the Falkland Invasion leading to the deaths of many British and Argentinian lives and the cost of fighting an avoidable war half-way around the world.
– oversaw the worst period in Wolves history
On behalf of the the British people please relay those facts to your American friends, Clive.
Ben/Thomas, I know you do an amazing job with this blog but could I just ask of you one huge favour please? Could you please get the preview for the Huddersfield game up asap so that we can discuss the more important issue of our possible relegation into the 3rd tier of english football, leaving this article free for anyone to continue their debate about the death of a wretched, sour faced, evil, old witch?! Many thanks, Carl.
Amen to that, Carl.
And I will actually now promise not to post on that topic again on this blog. I’ve said my piece. It’s all done.
And on that note, it’s slightly worrying that injuries along with Saunders comments the other day would suggest that we’re going to be back to the old guard for the crucial run-in. Foley will be back in at RB and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ward back at LB. With Henry back in midfield it really is over to the players that got us into the mess to get us out of it. The problem is that if we don’t start well, it really won’t take much for the fans to turn against this bunch of cretins. I think we would have at least afforded the younger lads a bit more breathing space. On a more amusing note, Saunders has been nominated for manager of the month!
It does rather sound as though Ward, Foley and Henry will all be included in the starting eleven doesn’t it? The fans have got to back the team and give them support throughout the game on Saturday, even if things are turning sour. This one is even more important than the Bristol City home game.
and what the —- has this got to do with politics? 🙂 will be interesting to see how it pans out wont it? not suprised hes m. of the month myself . the fact we arent bottom now is a good enough reason. i know a lot of folks dont like him but i think he is well capable of getting us out of this league if we stay up. not so sure about the top flight though..fans have got to give him time though as the players need stability now.i reckon mrs thatcher should be the next manager…anyone??
I personally seriously doubt he’s capable of keeping us in this league let alone getting us out of it!
Who else has died???????
93 comments eh ? 0h. Mrs T death has dredged up some old arguments….could argue that Unions helped make modern capitalism more efficient but historically outran there course. Problem capitalism has got now is its reliance on consumer activity and pledge to consensus politics ( literally its ability to keep delivering the goods ! ). Prof Smart-Arse UTW FOWB (HONS).
Could argue that slave labour would have helped modern capitalism more, but they couldn’t get away with that could they. But make no mistake they would if they could.
On a different issue I have tried and failed to post some financial information a number of times to no avail on the Express and Star site. Someone posted that according to the official accounts Wolves only had £30,000 cash at hand and in the bank by the end of May 2012.This is true for Wolves Property Ltd only. The football club ie Wolves 1986 Ltd actually had £12,836,000 cash at hand and in the bank as at 31 May 2012. At that time the accounts also show the football club had outstanding debtors to the tune of £31,561,000,ie somebody or some other company at that time owes our football club more than thirty one million quid. What is this all about? Why cannot the Fans Parliament people ask theses sort of questions, and why won’t the Express and Star post financial information that is accurate and in the public domain?
Would the 31 million quid owed have anything to do with staged payments for Fletcher, Jarvis and Kightly ? I think you need to get yourself on the Fans Parliament as it needs someone with your sort of financial expertise to (a) identify and (b) ask about these matters.
Jack, The accounts are for year ending 31 May 2012,so before the player sales. I think the £31m relates to an interest free loan to another company in the group. It is easy to dig out this information from Companies House, but I made my living in contracts not accounts. What we need is a professional accountant, who is a Wolves fan, to have a look at the accounts and let the fans know what the position is.Alternatively, the local newspaper should do it,but that is not very likely is it.
clothes off if you love the wolves !……………anybody? once round the ring road?…twice?!
If theres no minutes silence on saturday our defence will probably show its respect by standing still for 90.
Thankfully our right back is likely to be a Paddy and our left back either from Warrington or another Paddy so safe to say they won’t be paying her too much respect!
