After criss-crossing the globe from the USA(twice) to Canada, to Chile and then down under to Aussie, the Wolves postcard arrived safely in a somewhat less exotic location………. Abergavenny, South Wales, my home for the last 8 years.
The only problem was, the postcard was there……..but I wasn’t. I was 2000 miles away in Pissouri, Cyprus escaping the awful British weather and the interminable Welsh rain.
Cue a helpful Welsh sister-in-law, and a few weeks later the postcard arrived for its own little sojourn in the sun.
Being born in the south of England, I never lived anywhere near Wolverhampton but my dad was born and bred there and I caught the Wolves bug from him as a young child.
I’ve remained completely besotted all my life, an infatuation I have already shared with fellow bloggers in ‘Old Gold Love Affair‘.
Living, variously, in Berkshire, Surrey, Bournemouth and now South Wales, I’ve probably watched Wolves as many times at away grounds as at the Golden Palace. And watching my team has not become any easier now I’m spending large parts of the footy season in Cyprus. All this has never stopped me thinking, reading and talking(my poor wife) about the club I love, far more than is sensible for a man of my age. Obsessed is definitely the word.
We’ve had some decent players in recent times and , of course, the legend that is Steve Bull. But for me, nothing can compare with the team of my youth…. Munro, Bailey, Hibbitt, Richards, Dougan and the rest. Those were the days!
I do feel very positive about what’s happening at the club at the moment, though, and am hopeful that good times are ahead.
Of course lapping up the sun is all very well, but I still have to get my Molineux fix from time to time. So, on the pretence of visiting the mother-in-law, me, the wife and, of course, the postcard, flew back to the freezing cold and rain of Abergavenny in January.
The postcard went for a mercifully brief visit to the mother-in-law’s and then accompanied me and my wife, Kay, up to Wolverhampton for the Bristol City game.
Kay has no interest in football but she loves the weekends spent with the DOOGooders at our favourite Wolverhampton resort, A Parkview Hotel.
As usual, it was great fun, particularly as we were able to celebrate another win, an excellent performance and the present Mrs DOOGooder’s birthday. Perfect.
My wife took that photo, so here’s one with her in it. The love of my life. . .
. . . STEVE BULL!
So now it’s back to Cyprus and this had better be the last live game I see this season.
Because we’re not back until May and that’s when the play-offs start!
Nice one Martin.
And about bloody time too!
It’s a shame that you’ve seen the last of the Golden Palace and the hotel for the season.
I think we will try to get up there at least once more before the season ends.
If we do, we’ll raise a large glass of Remy to you and Kay.
…And send you the bill!
I expect you to be cheering them on at Swindon on the 11th March as well my friend.
Would have love to have gone to that one myself.
Great stuff Martin.
Two countries ticked off for the postcard in one visit 🙂
Also very proud you’ve made a good friend via the blog, which is more than we could have hoped to achieve.
Brilliant. When am I next on the list Thomas? Whilst I only live in North Yorkshire, I have lots and lots to say as I have travelled wide and afar during my 34 years in the Army. “Bully” (my figurine) has travelled to Iraq, Bosnia and even been to places where no other Wolves fan wants to go!!! I am really looking forward to receiving the card in time.

Hi Martin, good to see you are enjoying retitrment, as you can imagine this weather is playing havoc at work. I bet you don’t miss that?
Like you, I don’t think I’ve felt as positive about the Wolves for quite some time. KJ seems to be building a young team who play a passing game with no prima donnas. Long may it continue.
Hey Mickey, nice to hear from you. Really feel for you boys in this weather.
Say hello to all my old mates for me.
I can see why Doog has a picture of some hippy in glasses smoking a joint on his blog site, darn better looking than the real thing.
Nice to see that my mate Scooped is not the only one sans hair.
One day it would be good to see the reverse side of the postcard, to read the comments, both rude and clean.
Hope you have a blast in Cypress, Martin, and also hope one day all us old farts can meet up for a bevvy, some where in the world.
And as usual, FOwb
Thanks Clive. We fly back to Cyprus next week and we can’t wait.
We’ve been back here for 6 weeks and it hasn’t stopped raining yet.The wettest winter since 1767 apparently. Bloody awful for everyone back here.
You’re better off in Houston mate.
Always interesting to hear other Wolves fans stories Martin but weather wise you couldnt be flying out at a better time – any room for a stow away !
Great to have a glimpse into an expat Wolves fan’s life abroad in Cyprus! 🙂
Great post Martin. Just shows how far and wide Wolves fans are. We’re currently having 6 weeks with our daughter in NZ (Christchurch) so if Thomas wants to put NZ on the blog card map .. Let Ben know and I’ll txt him our address until mid march. One thing I am worried about is missing my ST renewal date. Although I’m sure Moxey will give me some added time?
Thanks Twixfix.
Sounds like the holiday of a lifetime. One of my brothers goes every winter and says it’s an amazing place.
The postcard’s already been sent on it’s way to the next destination, so i doubt there would be time for NZ.
And I’m sure uncle Jez will look after you.
Fantastic result last night by Bristol City I was more nervous about there result especially at 2.1 at half time I thought there’s no way they’ll be the O’s at bay for 45 min: but to go 3.1 up amazing I still couldn’t relax until the final whistle, what a result it feels like a win for us I knew they’d have a bad patch and what’s more engourageing is Brentford have there’s to come I hope sorry I know this isn’t about the post card just had to write something down………..COME ON ME BABES !
Nice write up Martin.
I love the Wolves Blog postcard spot. I put my name down with Thomas after I read the first installment from Clive in Houston.
I hope to receive it one day. I bet you can’t divulge the next recipient ?
Its nice to read about fellow bloggers, especially ex or semi-ex Pats like yourself.
It must be nice to spend the winter months in the warmth of Cyprus.
We had 8 inches of snow here in Virginia last night. But not as bad as it sounds back in the UK right now.
A resounding home win against the magpies this weekend, should cheer everybody up though.
Up the Wolves.
US Wolf
We playing Newcastle??
Bet if we did we would stuff ’em!
You’re right US, cant divulge the next recipient. Top secret you know old chap!
I can say it’s not heading for the US though.
Actually, i do hope you get it soon though mate. I do enjoy your contributions and i guess you’ve got an interesting story to tell on your love for the Old Gold.
Like Paul very pleased to see the O’s defeated but i think we are in a strong position and i expect us to push on now and win this division without having to look too much at other results. Most clubs our size who sink to this level have hit the financial rocks. We have apparently done it while being ‘a well run club’ – dumbed down inside and out ? We have got scores to settle and wounds to heal. I think Kenny is building a team that can achieve this process and Steve Morgan has certainly got the financial clout to back him if he chooses. Lets get back up there and have some pay back time.
