This is the sixth one all draw between these sides since Wolves were promoted so the score shouldn’t come as a surprise.
But I’m certain we’ve not played that badly in any of those other games.

Ruben’s rifle papered over a disappointing first half in which Newcastle carried the greater threat and Wolves were limited to counter attacks and the odd break of the ball.
It didn’t get any better in the second with the home side camped out in their defensive third hoping their opponents would over commit.
On another day perhaps the foul isn’t awarded or the red card is shown but I don’t think VAR should be blamed for this latest disappointment.
With the quality Wolves possess in midfield it’s criminal that we couldn’t string two passes together for extended periods of the game and allowed a weakened Newcastle to dictate.
The front three can rightly feel they’re starved of the right service but need to produce more when they do get the ball. Raul, Neto and Guedes showed moments of promise but simply didn’t impact the game enough with or without the ball.
That brings us onto the substitutions, which were beyond baffling at a point in the game when Wolves couldn’t establish any sort of foothold.
Newcastle were winning all of the duels and physically superior in the middle of the pitch. Bruno Lage’s response was to deploy two weakling wide players to stem the tide.
With Dendoncker and Traore watching on, Hwang promptly teed up Saint Maximan for the equaliser and Podence barely touched the ball as the visitors ended the game hunting a winning goal.
These are testing times for the head coach and this extended sequence without a Premier League victory can’t be ignored. He needs a victory in the next two or the pressure will soon become intense.
With a transfer window entering it’s final days and a midweek trip to a team that just got whacked for 9, there are equal measures of opportunity and despair at stake.
We must come out on the right side.
The game in the second half was crying out for Traore as Newcastle squeezed us into our own half. So much space in behind them.
Perhaps he’s heading out the door.
A bit harsh Thomas if I may say so, the performance was better than you imply for the first hour. We’ve made chances and almost scored which is more than NUFC did. We fell away in the last half hour and wasted good opprtunities to punish them on the counter attack. Did VAR save them? Well if a foul was committed then so be it , let’s not waste time discussing it nor the alleged red card for Scharr on Neto. The referee made the call. Bruno has got the players he wants and the club has put the funds in place like we’ve all been shouting for. NUFC will challenge for Europe and we need to do the same but we’ve got guns now and we need to start firing.
Agree that as Traore destroyed Dan Burn at Brighton it might have been wise to give him 20 minutes .
Fully agree BG- goals change games and if Nunes puts away the chance created by Raul’s chip in the first half then we may have gone on to a comfortable win. Rúben’s performance was unbelievable all over the pitch a real captain’s effort with a passing range unique in the PL. Criminal to let him go this window but it’s inevitable he will go at some stage. Overall I thought we did quite well, the new additions are still to get to grips with the pace and physicality of the PL but a CF is still a must. No need to panic but 4 games gone and we are in catch up mode already.
Player of the match Neves was absolutely superb today, a quite wonderful performance, and a goal of high end quality.
Defence were again solid, but why did we allow Newcastle so much space and to dominate us so much, notably in the last 30 minutes? It was asking for trouble. They had a free kick in the last minute which they put wide but I was convinced they’d score. That is not good enough game management from Wolves.
I’m very disappointed with our forwards, Neto and Jimenez look to have lost their cutting edge, they are not offering enough, not keeping the ball to relieve the pressure on our midfield and defence.
We certainly didn’t look like the home side today. So a negative from me, we need to dominate and win our home games. Yes the newly mega rich Toon Army are a strong outfit, much more than they were last season but they were missing their star midfielder today and we needed to take advantage.
Bruno asks for patience and while I would agree with him, we have to be playing much more in the opposition’s half.
Two wins now a must for Bruno from the next two games. Games I’d say we should be favourites to win.
Yes the pressure’s on.
Neto and Jimenez combined for a goal. Too bad it was called back because of a dive.
I think in the aftermath of the game where the masses will call for Hwangs head, the onus should not be on him. I was calling for Traore to come in, he’s a confidence player and Bruno clearly showed no confidence by putting Hwang and Podence ahead of him when we were crying out for an outlet but the fact we never really had any control of the game ultimately proved trekking and we were lucky to come out of it 1-1… Not one for calling for manager heads or scapegoats but time is pressing on the next two fixtures before a very tough run of fixtures and avoiding being in a precarious towards the wrong end of the table…
Here’s hoping for a turn around in fortunes ?
They did but unfortunately nowadays the ‘science of football, ’ VAR , forensically examines events leading to a ‘goal’ to ensure we get perfectly innocent goals.
But both players, for me, didn’t do enough to keep Newcastle occupied. On a couple of occasions , first half, Neto did the hard work but crossed straight into the hands of their keeper.. He just has to do better at this level if we are going to win games.
It was the forwards today who let us down. They just have to be more threatening.
Lage’s substitutions we’re also baffling. And from what Lage said after the game Boly has refused to turn up to the game when picked in the squad. Poor that from the player, and you’d have to ask what’s going on with him to allow this to happen?
I agree John it being a dive …
Ryan Fraser has perfected the art of doing this in his Cheatmouth days ….
The physics of it are that when you’re 5ft 6” and the ball is 6ft plus in the air he’s going to be underneath it and struggling to head it, especially moving.. ..
He knew exactly how to con that idiot Peter Bankes…. who incidentally sent off Danny Batth at Bristol for a far far lesser tackle than that in Neto …
Without bemoaning VAR … it’s so inconsistent, subjective and it seems that we have different rules depending on which team on the pitch …
The dangerous lunge on Neto was a clear and obvious miss and should have been referred to the pitch side monitor…
Bruno is a dead man walking these 2 games to save himself, subs poor decisions, no win in 11, wolves aie we.
What a load of crap at least were trying to play attacking football whitch makes a change from the boring crap we had under Nuno for the last season and a half. Give Bruno a chance he will get them playing the way he wants with a couple more additions ie a striker a attacking MF so were not reliant on Motinouho all the time.
Nuno’s tenure shouldn’t be reduced to the “last half season” in which we’re were missing key players the way is so frequently seems to. yesterday was woeful and directionless bar some individuals who played excellent (Neves, Semedo).
Lage was once again bringing more questions than solutions.
Lage has not produced attacking or exciting football, his football is slow and ponderous and reminds me of how Sarri just couldn’t adjust at Chelsea.
The speed and incision with which we counter attacked under Nuno was exciting, as was winning, that seems to be gone as too often yesterday we were just going long.
Newcastle were missing key players and still mostly controlled the game.
I watched the match it always seemed Neecastle were in control we had chances yes but are attacking play always fell down by an wayward pass. We need 2 or 3 new signing in the coming days a striker attacking MF and may be a CH but to me I would rather have another striker.
Were they in control when we were ahead?
Yes, they generally were, unfortunately.
Attacking midfielder? Isn’t that Nunes? Not saying he’s the right choice ( hopefully he’ll prove that he is) but isn’t that his game?
Thomas I think you got this absolutely correct.
Mr Goa, has clearly demonstrated his commitment to the Club in that despite the major problems faced by Fosun , he has somehow stumped up the cash to lash out on quality players. Yet still there`s little real signs of progress in terms of getting results.
Bruno endlessly points to his pride in our performance. He appears to think that to look good is enough. Winning does not seem to rank high on his agenda. Today`s post game interview was yet more of the same. Hugely disappointing.
Then there`s Bruno`s abject use of substitutes. Today`s game, as many other teams are showing , is all about making changes to influence the pattern of the game, both in terms of timing and the selected subs. Bruno is proving clueless on both counts. Quite why he waited so long and then introduced the inept Hwang and lightweight Podense is difficult to understand.
All of this smacks of Bruno`s sacking at his last job. After a great season one, the guy just lost sight of how to win, and this brought about his demise. The reality is that long before the introduction of the most recent additions to our squad, we had more than enough talent to win on a reasonably regular basis. But we did not. We jsy drifted into the habit of losing. A habit very difficult to break. And in the last resort this failure has to lie with the Coach.
Could it be, I wonder, that Bruno is technically gifted as a Coach, but does not have what it takes to be a leader ?
I have always cast my vote is giving Bruno more time. But no longer. All players, irrespective of individual quality, need the confidence which comes from winning.
It appears that Bruni is not capable of providing the motivation and inspiration needed.
He lost a key player who was sold for over €100 million.
Maybe so John. But one player does not make a team, which was in freefall. Justas sew are today.
I would say overall balance of things a draw was probably about right i am not covinced by Bruno Lage. Under Nuno we had a nailed on identity. 3 4 3. Break the play. Counter attack. Bruno to me doesn’t really assume the same authority. We don’t really seem to have a ‘style’. If Bruno was meant to address the final third then I will honestly say we are lacking How often do we create massive chances for a striker to poach ? Even todays goal was a Neves screamer 25 yards out You can’t rely on those all game I reckon Bournemouth away Saints home needs to see at least a 4 point haul. The pressure is growing on Bruno.
Bruno is respected by most of the team and influential in recruiting Guedes and Nunes.
He says the team won’t be at its best until mid November.
Look forward to it
Yes, that would be rather too late.
Err….the season starts in August? He can’t tread water until then. There has to be rapid improvement I would suggest. 4 points in the last 33 in pl games is not transition, it’s demise. As cheesy says 4 points from next 2 is the bare minimum, otherwise Bruno will be under immense pressure. His job is to deliver results.
That seems (Lage) like a comment from the Titanic’s captain after it hit the iceberg…
“We’ll try and limp on to New York”
Just saying for a friend..
So John
We have to wait until mid November for the team to gel do we. Well that takes us to 16 matches played and if we pro rata our current points total to date we shall have garnered around 8 points with almost half the season over.
Effectively guaranteed relegation.
Does Bruno see players as he WANTS to see them, rather than as they ARE, or are performing?
RIP Clive
Two points lost or 1 gained ?!
Looking back to this fixture last season, Wolves ran out 2-1 winners.
Our goal scorer ? Hwang Hee-Chan, with two superbly taken goals. He also provided the assist that saw Trincao’s rocket strike the cross bar.
Fast forward almost 12 months and things are simply not working out for our South Korean forward. There’s no doubt he possesses speed, strength, skill and the ability to score. But it just isn’t manifesting on the pitch. It’s not happening for him.
He seems to be a player lacking in confidence, and has been through the latter half of last season and the start of this. Raul’s gesture of giving him the penalty v Preston back fired. Hwang’s effort was tame. It certainly will not have helped his confidence nor did it help the team that night. We should have gone into the break 3-0 up, instead having to hang on for a 2-1 win. Are we too nice ? Not ruthless enough ?
Frankly, if the Leeds manager wants Hwang and they make a decent offer (£20m ?!) I’d snap their hand off. I think we’ve seen enough over a full year to see he isn’t quite up to snuff.
There were some positives from today. Neves was awesome. He was everywhere. The energy, distance covered, blocks, tackles, passes (finding Guedes on the wing, whilst he was running, with laser targeted precision was breathtaking). The goal was incredible. He was MOTM all day long. Fabulous ! And he’s ours and likely to remain a Wolves player for now. He is the best player I’ve seen in a Wolves shirt.
Kilman had a good game, Collins, early error aside, really kept Wood quiet. Semedo is getting better and better. He nullified Saint Maximin superbly, and was quite effective going forward. Moutinho was great, Jimenez still offers a threat, and had a decent game. Nunes was good in the first half but faded in the second. He’s getting up to speed nicely and adapting to the Premier league quickly. He’s going to be brilliant. Guedes was industrious. Neto looked dangerous.
The VAR decision against Neto was correct. It’s just a shame that the ref didn’t apply the same standard of what constituted a foul throughout the game. The tackle on Neto should have been more than enough for a red.
It was frustrating that we didn’t control midfield as much as we should and Newcastle pressed with more urgency and higher up the pitch. We invited too much pressure on ourselves ( look at the number of corners we conceded ). We didn’t dominate the midfield and could only muster half the shots of our opponents and 36% possession.
But, along with a number of others, I cannot understand the thinking behind the 83rd minute substitutions. I was completely baffled.
We can sub 5 players on 3 occasions. Surely bringing Traore on for Neto or Guedes would have made sense. Traore ties up players, can draw fouls, run down the clock and get us up the pitch.
Put him on, see what develops. You still have 2 more opportunities and 4 other players to bring on.
I rarely comment on manager’s decisions, preferring to trust they are fully in the know and far better qualified, but even before Hwang’s hopeless hoofed clearance into the danger area, my son and I were scratching our heads trying to figure out the thinking behind bringing on Podence and Hwang. It made no sense.
In the end it cost us 2 points and here we are, 2 points from 12. And we’ve only played Spurs, Fulham, Leeds and Newcastle.
It’s worrying and honestly no more than we deserve.
Something needs to change and this is not just about another striker. We have enough quality to beat some of these teams and score more. Missing a striker today was not the issue.
The situation with Boly is disappointing. On the face of it, it’s poor from the big man if he simply failed to show in order to engineer a move. That would be disrespectful to his teammates, the coaching staff, club and supporters. Surely he should have had a word with the coach to say he felt unsettled or perhaps the coach could’ve preempted the situation and spoken to the player ?
4 days to go for last minute ins and outs.
3 days to go before we play Bournemouth and what is starting to look like a “must win” game.
UTW??
I think Thomas’s summary is rather kind to the team actually.
No matter that we were facing Howe’s thugs mark 2.
No matter that the opposition was a rather expensively assembled squad.
No matter that again we came up against a very poor referee who did us no favours.
We remain unimaginative in build up and absolutely toothless in the last quarter even at home against pretty mediocre opposition.
If we don’t sign a seriously effective striker / target man (sorry Raul is no longer that man) before Thursday then we’re in deep trouble.
Even if we do we are not performing to the level we should with the quality of players we do already have.
Something not right and not my job to to fix it. I’ve backed him to the hilt but now you’ve had some backing and it’s over to you Bruno. I would like to say that a crisis is looming but it’s already upon us, because if 4o goals scored in 42 PL matches isn’t a crisis I don’t know what is.
There also seems to be confusion within as to what’s going on. Lage tonight claims that he has been asking for more strike power since he arrived and that today Boly was a no show. Harmony – it would seem not because we are obsessed with buying defenders and midfielders
And most but those who actually run the club have seen this coming for 2 years. Shi, Sellars, Lage – do they know what they’re doing?
We actually put the ball in the net twice, regardless of one being called back because of a dive.
It was a foul by Neto. You can’t put that one down to VAR.
It was a foul but the ref did not think it was at the time so you can put it down to VAR.
Negativity is not what I do. But with thirty minutes to go it was, for me, crying out for a way to be found to stem Newcastle’s pressure. To stop them believing they could commit without risk – Traore comes to mind.
A bit of added physicality midfield and in defence was needed. Dendonker perhaps. So can anyone explain why when the at last substitutions are made Podence, small and lacking in a physical presence, and Hwang a poor decision maker with little defensive qualities are brought on?
Podence had little if any impact and Hwang contrived to set up St Maximen who up until 90th minute Semedo and co had shut out.
If a coach lives or dies by his substitutions Lage is on borrowed time.
Would totally agree with you tactically but don’t you think Traore has made it abundantly clear with words, actions and body language that he has no desire whatsoever to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
And the real crux of our problem is lack of creativity and strike power – would Podence or Denonker have improved that?
Your final paragraph is correct but the issue at stake in the second half today was game management and to my mind Dendoncker was the most likely substitute to break up the countless waves of Newcastle attacks.
As for Traore, I’ll borrow something I read on another site, ” a 0% interested Traore is better than a 100% committed Hwang”. However, 0% is not the case as his last two matches show.
So what if he brought on Traore and he made a defensive mistake that resulted in a goal? It’s not like it has never happened before.
Hindsight is 20/20.
I was saying that he should have brought on the Donck. We’ve all seen enough of Hwang to know that he simply doesn’t cut the mustard. As many others have commented (not just today or for jus this season), Bruno’s decision making when it comes to substitutions is often perplexing.
Your last sentence is correct but Hwang and Podence were clearly not the right substitutions, given how the game was playing out, with or without hindsight.
We used to say that about Nuno’s decision making too.
Why put Traore on the bench if you have have no intention of using him?
Because you are allowed nine players on the bench but only five substitutions, simple maths but four won’t get picked. Would you prefer we only named a bench of five??
Before I say anything else, Ruben Neves was absolutely IMMENSE today!
What a superb all round performance from our new captain.
Also, Nunes was very good in parts and Semedo and Johnny were excellent – and playing in their correct positions.
My take on the game was that it was a thoroughly entertaining contest between two teams who should both end up nearer the top than the bottom of the division.
It was played in a cracking atmosphere and Molineux was LOUD.
When we got back to Dougie’s pad, Barbara commented on the racket coming from across West Park.
Possible red cards or disallowed goals apart, I think a draw was probably the right result.
Our inability to score enough goals to win a game hasn’t changed.
And Bruno’s substitutions remain a complete mystery.
Why bring on Hwang and Podence, two lightweights, when Newcastle were threatening to steamroller us towards the end, when we were crying out for a heavyweight presence in midfield and an outlet for our overstretched defence?
Dendoncker and Traore anyone?
Before the game, a few Bloggers met at The Park View to raise a glass in honour of one of our fallen.
We tried to cast the ‘Five for Clive’ spell.
But it wasn’t to be.
Maybe at Bournemouth, eh Clive?
I agree PJB re how we don’t really create or unlock defences. I think Bruno needs to be looking over his shoulder. And a good point re goals scored. Not good enough.
So I think it would be wrong to say we played badly for the whole match. Did we have control at any point? Not really. But we played some decent, attacking stuff in the first half, albeit mostly on the break – but we were giving them nightmares with some fast, counter-attacking play. Early chance, then Nunes with the free header. If those go in it’s a different story.
I shared the frustrations about our lack of control in midfield, it was worrying to see us dominated in that fashion. But it must be said, Newcastle created very little in the way of clear cut chances before they scored and it turned into a basketball match. We began to sit deeper as we tried to protect the 1-0 lead, and that’s something we’ve seen from Wolves for years. Had we hung on the narrative would have been different, we would’ve dug in for a hard-earned win. Fine margins.
Neves was magnificent. Running out of things to say about the maestro. I share the sentiment on Hwang. Sad to say it, but the guy offers nothing apart from some huff and puff at the moment. A puzzling and premature decision to sign him permanently after a couple of goals early in his time here. Also agree Traore should have come on. Equally puzzling.
I believe we’ll get the win at Bournemouth. We’ve shown enough quality. It should be our Watford moment form last season. Let’s hope so for Bruno’s sake.
Yes, put Traore on. He’s never made a defensive mistake in his career at Wolves.
A final thought reflecting on yet another afternoon of mediocrity minus.
In defence of our so called “attackers”.
It’s not really appropriate to use phrases like “couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo” because we never get near enough to the cow’s arse to use a banjo anyway.
It clearly needs a missile launcher from the likes of Neves rather than a banjo.
I agree with your ‘thought’ PJB but, as a banjo player, have to take exception to your metaphor.
I know little about cows but quite a lot about banjos and I do feel that the particular piece of cruelty to animals you put into the mouths of critics would actually be quite difficult and I don’t think it’s on the curriculum at any agricultural colleges yet. 🙂
I am, of course, used to the many jokes made about banjos – for example the definition of perfect pitch as the ability to throw a banjo into a skip without hitting the sides, or the classification of ten banjos on a bonfire as being a good start – but doubt their ability to contribute effectively to a serious debate about football. 🙂 🙂
I have some sympathy with the points others have made about Bruno’s future. For me he still has a lot to prove, I hope he can do it. Let’s see how it goes for the next two games, both of which should be entirely winnable.
COYW
As a ukulele player myself I’m very happy for the continued banjo references to be made as too many people only equate the ukulele with George Formby, although he played the Banjolele.
Always happy to make the acquaintance of another fretted instrument player SW. My first instrument was a ukulele – bought from a shop on Snow Hill. I later had a banjolele, bought from a local pawn shop.
When I lived in Luton for a time I came across Bone’s shop which sold, almost exclusively, mandolins. The shop had one guitar on display and one banjo – a strange instrument which had a circle of wood in place of the head. Every other instrument was a mandolin of one sort or another. The owner had been big in the fretted instrument world in the early twentieth century and ran the Luton Mandolin Orchestra – seen in the attached picture with their band bus. Possibly they were on their way to play at the Luton Town game. 🙂
No intended offence to your instrument of choice Jw just alluding to the incompetence of our strike force and a large part of the bovine anatomy.
Excellent musical history JW
Now can anyone fill us in on the history of cows arsed????
Try a barn door at 3 paces if you prefer.
Still only scored 40 goals in the last 42 PL matches.
On a different topic, there have been a number of comments – not only on today’s blog – about the skilful – or otherwise -use of substitutes. In my time supporting Wolves, I’ve seen the position change from the one where the starting eleven were the only eleven and they basically had to play until they dropped . For anyone who doesn’t remember what that used to mean, this short video is a good example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2dWjpqmkC4
It’s another memory from my time in Luton and is the 1960s midweek FA Cup replay of Luton Town against Man City. The original game was abandoned on the Saturday with City well in the lead and Dennis Law having scored six goals. Given the conditions in this clip you wonder how much worse they must have been for the original game to be abandoned.
The introduction of substitutes at least made it possible for injured/exhausted players to be replaced. But, as ever, this inevitably led to feigned injuries and tactical substitutes. At least the present situation is more honest, if a manager wants to change players he doesn’t need to make excuses. The reality is that we are not far off having specialist subs who are brought on , say, to take a penalty. This does change the game of course, but we are already a good way down that road with the five now allowed. Should it go further? It would help avoid having players who only appear on the bench. It might also avoid tactical fouls and ‘taking one for the team’ if replacement players were more freely available. What do others think?
I don’t think we played as badly as some bloggers believe. But yet again we can’t close down a game . We allowed Newcastle far too much space in the second half and we could have lost it at the end. Again our build up play was good but we don’t create enough clear cut chances. Hwang will rightly be blamed for the goal – it was a schoolboy error. Bournemouth is a must win or we could be bottom by next Saturday.
Being a Wolves fan is tough. I have watched virtually all of the last 11 games of Wolves and not one victory, nor many goals. That is difficult to swallow, and hardly entertains. Pushes us closer to a heart break!
Something is not right in the style of play and the lack of goals has to be more about the system rather than a lack of talent or a lack of a striker!I
Whatever happened to LIQUID football?
Very concerning, but we roll up our sleeves and prepare to fight at the next fixture. We shall not surrender!
We scored 2 goals. One was called back but that was not Raul’s fault.
Chelsea have 5 goals in 4 games and are in 6th.
Read the results.
WE SCRED ONE GOAL.
2 games this week to save his job.
6 points or gone.
Expect two 1-1 draws tbh.
Everything was OK until Hwang came on
He’s not good enough .
Don’t blame Hwang. Everyone knows he is no defender and lacking in confidence. Everyone except Lage that is. Mistakes in substitutions are made by the coach and any blame is his to shoulder.
And now Shi has a big decision to make.
Why traore didn’t come on is a mystery to me he would of taken the pressure off in the last 15 mins ..
To see Neves face at the final whistle a tragedy.. such a shame we gave away 2 points for the sake of him alone (as much as us)
Couldn’t watch MOTD 2
It’s better to watch the highlights on the Wolves official website, then you don’t have to listen to or see Lineker. There’s 12 minutes this week.
Watched the game for the first time this season.
Positives:
The two new Portugese lads.
Neves Brilliant
Samedo
Killman
Negatives
Only one Bruno.
Under Nuno I always had the feeling that he new his best team and how to use his subs. Bruno may be a good coach but, is he a leader and motivator. I seriously have my doubts. To put Hwang on instead of Traore was in my opinion the act of a man who has very little idea of what he is doing.
Two games this week, at least four points or hopefully Bruno is gone.
As for Hwang if Leeds want him I will drive him there myself and not charge for the fuel.
RIP Clive
What if he put Traore on and he made a defensive mistake? He has been known to make them.
Hindsight is 20/20.
I’m a Toon supporter and may I suggest your club moves heaven and earth to keep your captain.. we’d have him in a heartbeat
Hands off!
I agree that Thomas was a trifle hard on the players and I saw much to give heart if the manager were to use his substitutions more favourably. Half an hour from the end there was a distinct need for the Donk and Traore to be introduced; strength and height in defending and the need to force their defenders back in to using the usual three defenders to worry about Traore.
Mick Mccarthy and Nuño were also a trifle slow in bringing on substitutes to alter the initial set up. I could not believe the timings and personnel of his changes.
Get us a central goalscorer for goodness sake and yesterday.
Missing the big man already; didn’t always agree with his views but that’s the richness of our game; it’s diverse viewpoints.
Raul was able to put the ball in the net yesterday. How many do you think another striker would have scored?
I think that the general gist of blogs could be summed up by saying could do better. There is no doubt in my mind that the individual talent in our team is such that we should be challenging for a top 6 position Considering our new captain could walk into ANY team in the premiership on his current form it must be soul destroying to him for the effort and quality he pours into his game to walk off disappointed If the hierarchy (manager and above) want to keep this man then start making the right decisions or lose another Wolves legend. You chose to loan a competing team in the premiership a captain a voice on the pitch and a loyal quality player who is good enough to represent his country because he couldn’t play in a back four Rubbish You knew at the end of last season we were struggling to score goals because of a lack of quality in the centre forward positions and yet with literally hours before the end of the transfer window you still have not brought in anyone to fill this space. This person whoever he is should at the very least been sought and signed up and joined in the pre season training Not after 6 games and after a settling in period. As for the utilisation of the substitution system I remain aghast that we started the season against Leeds with a bench that was reminiscent of a school outing and even though the heat was getting to the players on the pitch the manager could not sub anyone for fear of making the situation worse. Like many other people who have written in on yesterdays match the non introduction of Traori is a mystery When Dan Byrne saw Adama warming up he had to make a call for a new pair of shorts as his had suddenly got heavier .If you use the excuse that Adama wants away then surely he is happy to be in the shop window and for different reasons he will then try his best. This was one of many substituting mistakes made by the management team who need to do a lot more homework on player abilities and what difference the subs can make. I honestly think we have a good set of players who along with another centre forward could see us competing in the top 6 and then we could keep our top players and encourage other top players to join us
He wanted to leave.
2 days of the transfer window left. It’s been open for 3 months.
Shi and Sellars still scratching around for the striker we have needed for 2 years.
Stating the obvious I know but clearly not obvious to them.
Sheer incompetence.
I’d rather they wait and get the best player they can than rush and get someone who is of lower quality.
They aren’t buying toasters.
Rush after 2 years, get real! We rushed into Silva, Cuitrone, Hwang and Willian Jose and arguably got them all wrong. They are already guilty of buying toasters,
Toasters are only bought for weddings on this side of the pond.
So you don’t eat toast once you move out of your parents’ house until you get married?
We use the grill instead.
Savages.
I totally agree with Thomas on this one. I felt that for much of the game Newcastle had a stranglehold on the game. I was pleased with the absence of Guimarães and hoped Wolves would be able to dominate the game. But it was not to be.
That said, Ruben was phenomenal and Nunes showed some nice touches. Collins and Kilman are gelling nicely and Semedo played well, particularly after getting an early yellow. Just need a bit of cut and thrust in the final third. Whilst we are talking of players, let’s not crucify Hwang; he is in a bad spell but is one of our own and needs support.
These Wolves home matches are becoming great social affairs at Chez West Parkian. So good to chill out with friends, before and after matches. Particularly nice, this time out, was the short get together prematch at A Park View with fellow bloggers – see DOOGooder’s photo – in honour of Clive. RIP old buddy.
RIP Clive
5-1 coming soon
Looks like we’ve signed Kalajdzic.
‘He’s 6 feet 7 of Football Heaven!
Let’s just hope the big lad can play.’
Stick him in the middle and tell him to stay there, we’ve enough technical players to work the flanks and play off him. Adama’s ability to skin a fullback and cross might be the alternative we have been missing these past 2 seasons. Regrettably Raul is no longer that type of player although his defence headers from set pieces were key yesterday.
The jigsaw is complete- but are they from the same set? For Bruno’s sake I hope they are.
Best me to it mate .. with the breaking news…
He’s 6’ 7 … and football heaven don’t ever take my Kalajdzic away … dah,, dah,, dah,, dah ,, dah …
Hope he beats the value for money tag that Mouthino holds…
Could be that … 5 – 1 (to Wolves of course) on Saturday we’d all wish for …
Maybe he could emulate that other erstwhile bean pole The Doog and score a hat trick in his first home match.
Let’s hope this is the missing piece of the jigsaw and that there are no more departures – fingers crossed.
Let’s hope so too mate …
They say goals are good for the soul .. (well I do..!)
And we could do with this addition without doubt …
He might be Stefan Mairhoffer in disguise?
Let’s be positive Cheesey…
Besides Stefan wasn’t an Austrian international… …
Banish that thought from your mind CoD, Other names to conjure with and despatch straight into the bin – Tomas Frankowski, Robert Taylor and Willian Jose and probably many more who have disappeared into the mists of time.
Yeah I know. Was just putting a bit of mischief in to the mix ! I am sure Our Austrian international giant will do the business.
Actually. He is the sort of geezer who could become a cult hero amongst the Wolves fans. I have a feeling he will be!!
Bit like yourself Cheesey ..?
IMO anyway ..
Well thanks mate. You and Clive were really big mates. CFH will live long in our memory. OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH LIGHT. And he wi?l be uo there now finding out the WWFC legends. And of course always 5-1 and FOWB !!
Long Live Clive! We have his words archived here. And he never moaned on. COMBs.
So Bruno is persisting with his baffling substitutions policy. He doesn’t play to the crowd, as he must know by now that you chuck Traore on with half an hour to go and get a big cheer. Plus he scored that epic against PNE. OK we were ‘defending a lead’
but our subs changed nothing, the pressure kept building. Considering the second half and despite our defensive effort a point is fair. Happy to give Bruno time to get it together.
Boly AWOL. MGW away, Coady away. Any traces of Nuno gradually disappearing. But still no clear idea how we are going to win games. Hang on there’s a stom brewing on the South Coast.
1 lv & COYW.
Unless he wants out I can’t see the justification for ditching big Willy for peanuts which leaves only 2 rookies as cover for Collins (who has yet to convince me on the deck) and the outstanding Kilman. If no replacement is in the offing, with Coady, Marcal and Saiss already gone, this seems a bit too light on evolution and very heavy on the revolution balance.
There seems almost an indecent sense of haste by Bruno to “cleanse” the club of as many of Nuno’s stalwarts as possible as quickly as possible. In reality only Neves, Jonny and Jiminez now remain as Nuno’s men.
This Blog is the true hearbeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. The passions ignite wether we are pro or anti Fosun. Wether we have signed this player or that. Have we signed enough players? Are they good enough? Have we sold the wrong ones? I love it and wouldn’t change it for the world. And i know CFH would be reading every comment and giving his verdict below. We are Wolves. Wolves Ay We. OUT OF DARKNESS COMETH LIGHT.
Just by way of coincidence CoD, the motto of the school I went to was “Clarior e tenebris” – which, of course, is Latin for “Out of darkness cometh light”. I’m sure that if the Roman legions had ever reached Sandwell there’s have been a Latin equivalent to FOWB.
COYW
I think they avoided Sandwell mate. The stench was too bad !!!
Sounds very probable 🙂
Is this true?
“The old gold outfit have not won a top flight match in August since 2011”
Not sure, but I can remember August 2011. We were briefly top of the PL after two wins and a draw in three. I can definitely remember May 2012 when we were bottom of the PL. I went to our final match at Brighton, where we lost 2-0 and someone threw Roger Johnson’s shirt back at him.
Great. Bournemouth have just sacked their manager. That means they will be all fired up for tomorrow night and on the back of a 9-0 defeat. Always bloody happens to us!
Don’t worry mate.
I’ve just read that Paul Merson has predicted a 1-0 win to Bournemouth, so we’ll be fine.
A moral victory in some ways, as we did score ‘twice’. At 2-0 it would have been game over.
Well I suppose a draw was a fair result but I put the loss of two points down to game management. Newcastle were playing the physical card and I think Bruno should have responded in kind in his substitutions. And sooner too. That said, the Newcastle equaliser was a bit of a freak wonder goal, and 9 times out of 10 it might have been skied, just like our clearance that led to it wouldn’t have been 9 times out of ten.
With apparent mutiny or at least dissent in the ranks (Coady/Boly) the pressure is on Bruno now. He’s been backed in the transfer market and will rightly be given time to bed the team in after the window closes. But how much time? Depends on the results. Fosun have shown with Nuno that they can be swift and decisive. The stakes are high. Look at Scott Parker at Bournemouth.
36% possession combined with 69% pass accuracy is only gonna end one way, you can’t control the game if you can’t maintain possession. Those stats are abysmal, only Fulham got a lower pass accuracy percentage than us, even Bournemouth got higher despite shipping 9. Guedes was the main culprit with 50%, then Collins 62%, Nunes and Mouthino with 68% and Jonny 71%. Looks like the new dawn may take some time to get up to speed.
Defense looking pretty solid imo.
We are back to where we were last season with Bruno’s baffling substitutions. Why not switch to a back three to see the game out, everyone knows that system inside out and put Traore up front to stretch them and Donk in for Mouthino. I don’t have a problem with Hwang or Podence as squad players but they were not what the game needed and ultimately Bruno’s poor choices cost us the game.
Bournemouth are a very poor side and a win against them will prove nothing, a loss though would definately bring Bruno’s ability into question. They’ll have ten men behind the ball so it’s not gonna be a stroll in the park.
Lage is officially mental IMO if he doesn’t play Traore to feed our new giraffe and even Jimenez on the deck..
These 3 points a must or I don’t want to even think about the nxt games
