‘Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory.’
Gandhi apparently, but I don’t always trust the internet.
Anyway, the point is there was definitely more bite in that Wolves team on Saturday and they got their reward in the end.
Chelsea are in a bad moment in the same way Brighton were in a good one the previous week, but the difference between the two performances for Wolves was being harder in the tackle and faster to the break of the ball. Everything else followed.
I suspect effort won’t be in short supply tomorrow as the lads will realise the magnitude of the challenge.
It’s a big ask, but we normally do a good job of ruffling Pep’s feathers – even in defeat.
Man City
Results at the weekend didn’t seal the title but they did give them a tiny bit of breathing room. They can now afford a small stumble in the final three matches, which must feel like a gigantic bonus.
I’d wager at least one of the three sides they still have to play – West Ham and Villa being the other two – will cause them some pain so that small gap could make all the difference.
You can rightly point to their mega-budget, but if they do see off a Liverpool side that I view as one of the greatest in Premier League history, I would count that as a big achievement regardless of their advantages.
The thing I do admire about City is that it’s always a real squad effort. Unlike Liverpool I don’t think I could reel off their best XI because it’s always rotating and whatever version you get seems to maintain a good level of performance.
Squad depth will be tested defensively though with Kyle Walker, John Stones and Ruben Dias all ruled out of the remaining games. Nathan Ake may also miss out tomorrow according to Pep.
Whatever they do at the back, we all know they have more than enough upfront to win comfortably, but perhaps it does expose a chink in the armour.
Wolves
No doubt there will be calls to start Chiquinho and possibly Trincao tomorrow after their rescue mission at Stamford Bridge, but I’d probably stick with a similar starting XI. You’ve got to respect the opposition.
I’m assuming Saiss will be out after limping off on Saturday but I wouldn’t mind another look at Toti or even Mosquera before the end of the season. A bit more pace in that back three wouldn’t be a bad thing either.
Packing the midfield and then trying to squirrel the ball up to Raul and Neto to get at their rejigged back four wouldn’t be a bad way to approach the game. Chelsea were exposed repeatedly by this tactic.
Then we’ve got attacking players with confidence in reserve to call upon if we need that extra push later in the game.
Last time out
That penalty shouldn’t have been given at The Etihad earlier in the season. It was one of those VAR wouldn’t have overturned if it hadn’t been given on the pitch. You can’t say they didn’t deserve the victory but it was a cheap way to get it in the end, particularly after Wolves defended so well with 10 men after Raul went insane. Kilman nearly salvaged a point at the end with our only meaningful attack.
We lost both games last season too, but did alright in spells. At Molineux we were 2-0 down early, but Raul got it back to 2-1 and a lot of good chances were wasted before Gabriel Jesus eventually killed the contest in injury time.
Predictions
Nobody predicted 2-2 at Stamford Bridge. There were a few 1-1 forecasts though so at least some people got on the scoreboard.
Brompton Wolf still remains clear at the top of the overall table at the end of Gameweek 35.

Up The Wolves!
I was one of those accusing the team of being on the beach already. Coady said it hurt for the fans to be saying that. Perhaps that is why we were saying it. Credit to them for turning it around.
I don’t know if Liverpool are the best team in history. but if they are then Man City may be the most complete team in history. As Thomas, mentioned, they always seem to perform regardless of who’s on the pitch. We should remind ourselves how lucky we are to be mixing it with the likes of these, and as spectators, to be able to watch them live. If we can give either of them a game then we should be proud too.
Hard to see us getting anything against a Citeh team holding all the aces. They’ll be without a few defenders but have many more, very expensive, options who seem happy to waste their careers sat on the Citeh bench. Money talks I guess.
The Chelsea game had an air of turning point about it, both for the team as a whole and for certain individuals within it. Some of the stalwarts who have carried us on their broad shoulders for several seasons appear to be approaching the twilight of their stint at our club. Meanwhile, the new intake of fresh faces showed, in quite short cameos, a verve and fearless spirit which hinted that our future can be as bright as the last few years have been.
Moneybags Citeh are a tough assignment for any team though and we’ll do well to get anything out of this. Pity we ain’t got Adama
.
The title is in our hands.
Captain Coady is not going to hand it to Citeh on a plate, but I hope the pressure doesn’t mean we play like a bunch of nervous schoolgirls and twat about with sideways and backwards passing, struggling for any meaningful possession.
Instead we go for Juggular and get an early goal or two. Pep has a mental breakdown and flaps about on the touchline like a winged Vulture communicating chaos to the team, who bottle it completely.
Wolves play like Real Madrid for enough minutes to seal a famous victory and are handed the keys to Klopp’s Humvee, the Liver building and what remains of Toxteth.
Great days indeed.
1 lv & COYW.
I truly believe that we will pick up at least a point tomorrow.
Yes, on paper we have no hope in hell and all we would hope to see is a fight for the badge.
We can ruffle a few feathers against the top two so let’s round off this season not making it an easy one for anybody.
Let us hope for a fight from the Boys, that is all I ask!
City players will be up for this but so will the Wolves players, I believe. I agree we should start with the same side as the last game and see what happens. Substitutions thereafter as applicable.
Suspect VAR officials will be looking to help City if they get the opportunity so do not expect any help from them! None!
Even though we were far better against Chelsea I can’t see us being good enough to take points from City who have far more depth than we do. I do hope some of the youngsters are given an opportunity to show their skills and not just for the last 5 minutes.
Wolves 1 – 2 City
.
C’mon folks we didnt have any hope up at their place last time out and the time before that but we did ok didnt we ?
My prediction is a fantastic game to fully restore our pride and banish the awful last few games from our minds.
We have what it takes to give them a massive shock.
NO FEAR !!
One of the many problems in moving house, and setting down about 100 miles away is you usually have to change tv provider.
And one of the problems with that is you lose any recordings you have saved over the years, such as from a certain December evening in 2019.
So, having no wonderful Wolves victories to drool over late at night, when her indoors is asleep, the dogs are snuggled in for the night and a last IPA in my sticky paw, I am expecting, nay demanding, a similar result tomorrow, to use, to quote Ben from a while back, as suitable wank material on future sleepless nights.
We have shown, with several pathetically drab recent performances, that we can collectively be shit for 2 hours.
After seeing and hearing the tumultuous support at the Bridge, our golden boys should be chomping at the bit for a repeat performance.
Especially, and you heard it here first, folks, as a little bird has whispered in my shell like that now FFP is no longer a factor, a spine strengthening team is to be built in the summer, and our lot will be playing out of their skins to retain their places at The Mol.
With Ruben reportedly having signed a new, long term contract, the future looks good.
Fingers crossed the little bird wasn’t a throstle!
City put 5 past a non existent Toon team at the weekend, they gonna find out what it’s like to pick the ball out of their own net five times tomorrow!
Hi. Where have heard about Neves signing a new contract?
My friendly little bird.
No names, no pack drill
In a dream Roger. In a dream. (sigh)
It’s so typical of recent wolves sides to struggle against teams that are lower down the division before stealing points off the top 6. But I can’t see us pulling this one off. Citeh know that the title is their only chance to redeem this season. Their demolition of Newcastle was brutal and I fear we will be similarly steamrollered.
Fingers crossed for a vintage gutsy wolves display knocking the title race into a spin again, but mind overrules heart for the prediction league.
Stealing points off the top 6 ?
What about the points stole off us by the top 6 ?
Come on you wolves
I agree with a lot of what you say Chester. Liverpool’s slip-up against Spurs has given Citeh a chance to secure the title and I feel that we don’t have the necessary ammo to threaten them. Fair enough, if Pedro can work his magic then we just might upset them by scoring at least. But Raul, alas, just ain’t the player he was I’m afraid so I find it hard to see us scoring.
I am genuinely interested in thisbgame. Think there could be some twists and turns – but reckon we’ll go down in the end…
.
Fingers crossed but they are very good.
Reading this morning that City have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Erling Haaland, which could cost £213,000,000, has made me think that it’s about time I stopped being a Wolves supporter and just sat at home in my rocking chair sipping weak tea and occasionally dribbling down the front of my ‘Wembley 1974’ Wolves shirt.
How are we meant to compete with that sort of spending?
What hope is there for the rest of the Premier League when the top teams can splash out stupid money on every Paul, Jack and Romulu?
The trouble is, a bit like a decent hit of H, when it’s in your blood, it’s difficult to give it up.
Yesterday I had a dream. I was leaving my flat at the top of Compton Road and walking to Molineux. The evening was cold and dark. I could see the floodlights burning through the night sky.
We were against Leeds. They were going for the League and Cup Double. They only needed a draw.
They were the Manchester City of the time, seemingly invincible, but I knew that this Wolves team could beat them.
The playing field was a lot more level in those days. (Although the pitches were often not).
I paid my three shillings and sixpence and took my usual position in the enclosure, just in front of where Bill McGarry sits.
The excitement was mounting. The atmosphere electric.
Molineux was bursting at the seams.
Then suddenly I woke up.
I’d only gone and spilled my tea down my front. Luckily it was lukewarm.
I called for the PMDG’er to come and mop me down.
I wonder who won?
That report is bogus.
60mil clause and then wages +agent fees. All less then grealish
The report isn’t bogus.
It will cost a TOTAL of £213m.
Maybe it is less than Grealish.
But if it is, that only underlines what I’m saying.
City have made two deals in the past year totalling way over £400m. They are spending the money, it doesn’t matter how it’s shared out.
I repeat – how are we meant to compete with that?
It will not cost £213… When have you EVER seen someones wage be estimated before the length of contract and then included in the TOTAL sum.
Ronaldo from Juve for United for example….. The fee was the fee… The fact he is on £500k a week was never included… or you could say the exact same thing.
Its poor journalism… that £213million is on the basis of a 6 year contract at 400k a week…. so again that report is BOGUS
Oooohhh!
Having known a few people involved in purchase of footballers I have always been told the buying club looks at the total cost of the deal. Transfer fee plus wages plus agent fees over the length of the contract. That is there committed exposure . With unknown agent fees and bonuses £213 million could be realistic.
Didn’t say it wouldn’t be realistic. But its a bullshit way to report a deal.
Never in 32 years following football have I ever seen someone’s wage be touted into the deal. Never. Not Once. Ever.
When do we ever see a signing for wolves that includes the weekly wage in the total fee. you Don’t its not a done thing. There is an agender from the media.
Well, you haven’t read many newspaper sports pages mate.
They do it all the time.
Seems legit as lots of news outlets reporting the same thing.
‘Haaland, 21, is expected to put paper on a five-year contract worth around £107m, including signing bonuses.
But it is understood that the total cost of the deal could be as high as £213m once agents, representatives and miscellaneous fees of up to €50m (£42m) are taken into account.’
Insane!
EXPECTED. Never do you see someones wage be include in the “COST” price. Its poor poor journalism.
If we start winning trophies, or fosun dump a sponsorship on us, then maybe we can compete… but we have plenty of players ok £100k+ a week so….. management is where the blame falls unfortunatly.
Not sure i’d agree that it’s managers fault. Id lay blame squarely at the TV companies and greedy Premier League executives door. We should’ve let them all go and have their shitty little Super league. We’d be rid of the big six, rid of all the fake footy fans and we’d have a truly competitive league.
I agree. That super league should of happened and 6 teams from the championship should of been promoted and so on, it would of done football the world of good and them teams could of gone and played abroad.
have, have, have, those, have.
Just saying.
Question. Are you coming to the bloggers gathering on Saturday at 6 pm?
I am sure some bloggers would like to meet you.
I’m working in Uttoxeter so don’t think i can, is it just a meal or pub after? I’ll still be working at 6 so definately can’t make the meal.
Shame you can’t make it, and I mean that, even though I wasn’t asking you lol.
The trajectory of the comments is confusing
Me? Not this year. But not sure how to take that question :S
Doogooder,
Millionaire football owners have been taken over by billionaire owners and will be taken over by trillionair owners.
Football will eventually eat itself , it’s the kids who follow the mags cubs of today that I feel sorry for because they will never appreciate the value you got for your 3 shillings and sixpence.
Come on you wolves
If you stop supporting Wolves Doog you’ll have time to write longer posts ?
Have a feeling
Not one to dabble or gamble very often, but I might just splash out on a lottery ticket tonight. There’s as much chance of winning the jackpot as there is trying to guess which Wolves team is going to turn up for the 20.15 Wednesday K.O. (Who thought that time up ?)
I mean, literally, which starting 11? And what frame of mind ? Could Podence figure ? By all accounts he could play with his toe or foot injury, with injections, but to date has chosen not to. Concerned at the risk of further aggravating the condition. Perfectly understandable in my opinion .
There was a piece on BBC sport regarding Villa. Top line, Villa could be kingmakers this season as both Liverpool and City have to play them. Not a mention of us as per. I guess it was the Gerrard spin.
It doesn’t really bother me. As a Wolves supporter I’d rather feel my team were under the radar and over achieving. That particular glove seems to have fitted us well in recent seasons.
At this point I’m kind of resigned to us being out of the race for Europe, even the Conference version. I’m far more interested in what sort of performance we are going to put in and who is going to seize their opportunity in the last 3 games.
It’s seems strange, but I still feel it’s hard to put a pin in Wolves campaign this time around when we are nearly half way through May. There have been so many ups and downs thus far. Even without the BIG E, assuming we don’t qualify, it could still be a very good season.
Beat either Liverpool or City and a good result against Norwich, with good performances to boot and Bruno’s first season will have been a hugely successful one, considering this is a squad he inherited.
Lose all 3, with the players seemingly thinking of their first mojito on the beach everyone keeps referring to, and it will seem like a missed opportunity, when we were so so close.
Like the final big firework at the end of the bonfire party that failed to go off.
Then all attention turns to the transfer window. It needs to be more dynamic with more incomings and outgoings than we have seen with our current owners so far. Certainly if we are going to kick on and compete next season. Make no mistake, aside from the usual suspects, there will be Newcastle, Villa, Leicester, possibly Fulham all pushing hard. Next season could be the most challenging yet.
Back to tomorrow night. I’m going for a highly optimistic 2-1 win.
If I do win the lottery, one of the first things I’ll be doing is booking a beach holiday for the family.
And if Wolves can muster a final hoorah and a couple of wins, well that mojito will taste all the better.
UTW
I was one of the ones who lambasted the entire wolves Team and coach on the previous occasions pre Chelsea game, and rightly so imo. Chelsea had most of the possession granted, but they really didn’t trouble us to much in fact we had probably the best chances in the opening 45.
Then like all of the so called top 6 they was handed a dubious penalty, the rest is history.
We all know City will come to the mol and dominate possession as they always do no matter who they play, but if we take our chances we could get something from this game I’m sure.
A draw would be a good result against City and a win against the mighty Liverpool that would be the best and rob Liverpool if the title… Then I will wake up. Up the wolves….
I’m afraid that my natural optimism fails me this time; can’t see us winning, although I’m sure the team will not lack for want of trying. Effort, yes, I was quite satisfied with the performance against Chelsea even when I thought we’d lost 1-2 !
Plenty of chances created, and young ‘uns showing their ability, even if said chances were ‘squandered’, ‘spurned’, ‘wasted’, or simply missed. When I observe how many of our opponents’ chances are blasted high or wide every week I have to wonder if their fans are similarly contemptuous.
I’ve invested a very modest £30 on three bets. Unless we lose tomorrow I will be on a nice little earner that might have bought Dennis Waterman a drink back in the day.
£10 the draw at 19/4. £10 straight win at 12/1. £10 the win/BTTS at 25/1. Even a measly draw sees me in pocket overall. I feel the odds are generous as we simply can’t be 12/1 or 25/1 against winning. We’ve stuffed Citeh before and we can do it again.
We can play P/L kingmakers tomorrow and I fancy us to be the party poopers after that-life affirming comeback against Chelsea. Let’s at least deny Citeh two points to take the P/L title to the wire. The TV guys will be over the moon if the title goes undecided to the final day of the season. I won’t be surprised if we win but I’m forecasting 1-1 for this site.
I love all the newly returned optimism following an unexpected but very welcome comeback against an out of sorts Chelsea team. One swallow and all that but that’s why we support our team- capable of playing sublime football on our day. I always think it can be our day and look to a narrow win. We will need Raul at his best though because it will take 3 goals to beat this City team. Are we capable of that- of course. We are Wolves!
I have decided to predict a wolves victory for the last remaining matches…. a broken clock and all that. Want to see us go out of this season on a bang not a whimper. Just play lads. Make it interesting. Please.
A moment of madness from the frustrated Mancs leads to a sending off and an extra time winner from Wolves.
Would love it.
Man Citeh player sent off?
Not if VAR has anything to do with it.
I’d like to see Bruno be brave and put out this side
Sa
Boly
Coady
Gomes
Chiquinho
Neves
Cundle
Moutinho
Ait Nouri
Silva
Neto
but it’ll never happen. Bruno is no gambler. He’ll play the same side with the omission of Saiss due to injury rather than him not having a decent game since Everton. At least Gomes will get a shout although it wouldn’t surprise me if Donk got slotted into the back three which has happened before. Personally it’s a free hit so he may as well ring the changes and put out a youthful side full of energy. Trincao on as sub to add some late fizz depending on which Francisco turns up. Lets hope Neto improves further and gives us something to shout about. We’ve had some great games against Man City over the last few years even when we were in the Championship under Nuno in a League Cup tie when we held them to a nil nil draw (Enobakhare groan!). So i’m going for a 3-2 thriller with us handing the title reigns back to Liverpool cos iv got no chance of catching Brompton so i may as well go back to fantasy football dreaming. Hoping they’ll be knackered from their Chumpions League exploits, the Newcastle drubbing and a depleted defence.
Onwards and sideways UTW
Forgot to put score
Well let’s just get the red carpet out shall we!
Man city- Liverpool- man city- Liverpool
Sick to death of klopp and god ole’, seriously, you would believe that it will have to go down to the last day and possibly goal difference because these two couldn’t possibly lose a game before the end of the season.
What a pair of twotknobs.
Since when did football powerhouse franchise’s have to be based in London or the north west to have an advantage!
I’m giving Villa a free pass tonight and hope they stuff klopps boys, then we can put citeh in their place and remind the bbc that the midlands a actually still exists.
Europe has gone as far as I’m concerned so
4-2-3-1. For the remainder of the season, imagine god , prepping his boys for our ‘ hard to breakdown’ 5 @ the back ,
Then, we hit them , all guns blazing, whats to lose
Sick to death of pool x citeh
Come on you mighty wolves
I predicted a draw @Chelsea, although only a goal apiece and we could’ve should’ve won.
Citeh will be more clinical but I still fancy us to get something.
Hard to see us winning this game but hope springs eternal…
I’ll go for an optimistic 2-2 draw. I’m travelling across from Suffolk so I just hope the team is able to produce an attractive and competitive performance under the floodlights for the sake of the fans.
Are you joining us for dinner on Saturday?
Guess I have to be realistic. City want to win the Prem. They are better than us. So, even though it would be absolutely amazingly brilliant for us to win, I just can’t see it.
Why not? We’ve beaten them twice since promotion. Plus a tie.
GOOD LUCK…
Against my better judgement I hope we can nick a goal and hang on for a draw
We’ll have to raise our game but a point will feel like a win, a fighting loss will feel like a win but please let’s not get hammered… We like playing quality opposition, it raises our level accordingly…
Wolves play there best game of the season to turn the title race on its head. Dreaming is for free.
I wonder who the blogger is who is putting a dislike against a post for no reason. Sad man.
It’s not me, you tosser, as hinted previously.
And I haven’t spent all my dosh on a new house, just most of it.
I am not coming to the Bloggers Bash coz I don’t wanna see your ugly mug.
No other reason.
So there.
I will miss you mate. Truly. See you next season fella.
Don’t forget we are playing Man City. The referee. And VAR. For this reason I have sent Next Door neighbours cat on a secret mission to Stockley Park. A top secret dossier has been compiled . NDNC (next door neighbours cat) will be armed with a machine which emits a sonic sound radar which can only be heard by Stockley Park officials. Thus said radar will instill some common sense in to officials and stop them giving nonsense penalties against WWFC. Any VAR failures will be punished by forcing them to spend 2 weeks on holiday in West Bromwich. So hopefully NDNC will come up with the goods and in a weird sense of irony a penalty is given to WWFC on 67 minutes when a stray pigeon is hit on the head by the Citeh keepers clearance. VAR review it in line with the sonic radiation going round in their heads. And award a penalty to WWFC because you can’t have a pigeon being ‘hit on the head’. Pep goes bonkers to such an extent that the mental health unit are summoned to administer immediate psychological care. To no avail. WWFC 1 CITEH 0.
Another tough game coming up but credit to the boys for spirited fight back on Sat.
I’m intrigued by the fact that Martin Atkinson is the referee AGAIN for this fixture as he was when he gave Sterling six goes at converting a penalty..!
I can’t be 100% but this could be his 3rd on the trot… strange eh..!
Our heroics will continue with another keenly fought draw… hopefully Atkinson and VAR will be kinder.
put boly on the left and start chiquino
very..very drunk……….
All throughout the season I have predicted on form of the teams. That has not worked at all. The only thing I discovered is how unpredictable Wolves can be. In fact I feel they do it on purpose to shove me further down the Prediction League.
Well, my response is, predict a loss – let’s see you get out of that one Wolves !!
A fantastic response by the team last week. A great response by Trincao (who in fairness had a pretty crappy season so far). The good thing for him is that Wolves fans have short memories when it comes to performances. I remember Hwang being lauded as a wonder kid after his first couple of appearances (and goals). The last few weeks have been rather different.
Here hoping for a wonderful performance by our team.
Fuck Man City and fuck Liverpool
Cmon you mighty Wolves !
Lych Gate tonight ?
can’t mate … got to work a nightshift straight after the game . can’t even have a pint
sorry mate would love to
Tough night at the office, but that can be when Wolves shine. Pep must be thrilled that Adama is getting splinters in Spain rather than scaring the hell out of him and his team.
As long as Wolves can give City as good a kick in the bollocks as they did Chelsea, I don’t care what the score is.
Trying to find a way to say we’ll get something from this but just can’t see it. Any other point in the season maybe they’ll have an off day but surely not when the title is so close. And Real Madrid we ain’t. Just hope we give them a good game.
City are a decent side and have recovered some momentum following the Champions Cup debacle. A point would be a good result for us but don’t see it happening.
Was going to hide behind the sofa but the last 20 mins against Chelsea gave me some hope for tonight.
We really could decide who wins the prem in the next games.
City have such strength in depth a few injuries aren’t going to cause the a problem. I just can’t see us getting anything tonight – hope I’m wrong.
Not sure why they are being given the nomenclature City when there are loads of others just as there are many uniteds. Another bee in my bonnet is Stamford Bridge being called the bridge. Pompous arrogant…….. At least there’s only one real Wanderers!
Looks like there may be another season ticket up for sale if Wolves don’t respond positively to me.
Do we know when first match is next season?
6th August with a break 13th Nov to 26th Dec as we all travel to that footballing hotspot for the World Cup.
Thanks mate. I asked Wolves if I could get a concession on my season ticket as I turn 65 on the 14th, they initially said NO.
I am waiting for a response on my reply back to them !!
Which Wolves will
Show up?
Who knows?
Our best chance lies with Neto outpacing their defence and setting up Raul …or anyone!!
If we can keep them out in first half anything is possible
Need Sa heroics for 98 minutes and no penalties!!
Have you set off yet … can’t be late for this weekend…!
I hope Linda had learnt the phrase .. ‘Wolves Aye We..’
18th August 1962 Wolves v Manchester City
60 years ago, holidays for most “working class” folk consisted of a week or two in such luminary resorts such as Blackpool, Margate, Skegness, Rhyl or Southend. We holidayed at another popular post war resort – Weston Super Mare where the tide retreats over a mile – when the call to arms came and we headed back early on Saturday morning for the game.
Arriving in Wolverhampton at lunch time we headed home to Sedgley on the number 58 trolley bus with the suitcases and then dad and I headed back into town for the match leaving mother and sister to do the washing – its women’s work after all is said and done.
Since 1899, Wolves and Manchester City (originally known as Ardwick FC) have played each other 125 occasions and its remarkably close. Wolves with 49 victories to 51 City successes. Even more remarkable is the number of goals scored over those 125 games, more than any other encounter over a similar period at an average of virtually 4 goals per game. The scores are littered with 4’s and 5’s and even 6’s per game. (One ended 6/4).
Perched high on the South Bank terrace this high scoring fixture certainly lived up to its reputation. The mercurial Ted Farmer scored 4 aided and abetted by Jimmy Murray (2), Terry Wharton and Alan Hinton plus an own goal by George Showell as Wolves ran riot scoring 8. It was a quite barmy game of football with thrills galore at both ends because Manchester City went all out as well. Indeed it could probably have been 10/7.
This was certainly worth the rush to get home and then back into town as we stood and marvelled at this all-action display. Farmer would surely have gained dozens of England caps but for his crippling injuries. In April 1961 he scored his 21st goal of the season in the 21st minute in his 21st match of the season and on his 21st birthday. (Or something like that). Overall, he netted 44 times for Wolves in just 61 appearances in the top flight.
In goal for Manchester City that sunny August day was the blonde shot stopper German Bert Trautmann. Trautmann was a WW2 paratrooper in the Luftwaffe and was captured on the Western Front and found himself banged up in a POW camp near St Helens. After the war he refused repatriation and worked on a farm in rural Lancashire whilst playing in goal for St Helens. In 1949 first division Manchester City signed Trautmann which caused a national outrage. Understandably emotions were extremely raw so soon after the conflict and Germans (along with those of the other Axis nations) were treated with suspicion and hostility. However, Trautmann played in nearly 550 games for Manchester City and gradually the resentment subsided and indeed he became something of a national hero in 1956 when he broke his neck playing in the 1956 FA cup final vs Birmingham City at Wembley. The injury was not discovered until 3 days after the match after he had made some stupendous saves as City won the cup 3/1.
Trautmann retired in 1964 – his last appearances in goal were for Wellington Town (later to become Telford United) and in 2004 he was awarded an honorary OBE for his dedicated efforts in Anglo/German relations through football.
Not really sure what he thought about conceding 8 goals – he probably had recurring nightmares about Ted Farmer bearing down and arrowing a howitzer into the top left-hand corner. All the same Trautmann rightly earned his place in English football folklore and he obviously loved his adopted country.
Bedfordshire Old Gold
BOG.
Awesome mate, as usual.
Brilliant memories. I still have reports about the game. What a start to the season it was! Looked like we were on course for the title until 10th or 11th match.
Ted Farmer’s Heartbreak Game is worth a read if you can find a copy. Not a friend of Mr Cullis, sad to say!
Top drawer stuff Mikeyboy….
I remember the neck break incident well..
Just how on this planet do you unearth all of these old gold abc black nuggets. ?
Not optimistic so if I go for the draw they’ll get the win.
I live in hope as usual!
Looking forward to the light show at Molineux and, hopefully, some fireworks from Wolves later. We can but dream.
We could really do with Podence for this, if his foot is up to it.
More of the same form Saturday, please.
I wouldn’t mind seeing us go with a back four from the off.
Chiquinho also deserves more time – why not start him?
Should be a good atmosphere under the lights. City don’t actually need to win this, although they will be expecting to.
Let’s put the cat amongst the pigeons.
Draw for me too mate
A semi cloive tonight please ?
Show us your mettle lads
Hopefully, it won’t be a rugby score
I’m feeling more and more confident the closer to kick off we get. I think we’ll give them a game but they’ll nick it
Gettin in just under the wire again. I believe. If not please disregard. Thanks, Bob
After 24 minutes i have turned off and gone to watch a film !!!
Difficult to score when you can’t get the ball !!!!!
To be honest I do not think we have played badly, but Man City are awesome.
Could not fault the effort but we were just outclassed tonight
Notwithstanding the debatable penalty decisions (if they’d have happened up the other end, would at least one have been given?), City were superb.
Just shows how far we have to improve (and how much we have to spend) to get anywhere near them.
Couldn’t fault the effort though.
First on MOTD. Typical. See you both on Saturday.
That was a lesson in football tonight . We are light years behind City couldn’t live with them tonight.
When Dendonker scores we always lose.
Season cannot end quick enough.
As above. No lack of effort from our boys. We were just outclassed by a very very good team. KDB . What an absolute player. Everything was effortless and he just sprayed the ball around at will. As for our 3 penalties. Well we just don’t get them do we. It was a sort of ‘reverse Clive’ scoreline !
We did a reverse cloive..
Not surprising as citeh are untouchable at their best.
