The gap to sixth is only two points, but it will still take a strong finish to make it into the European places.
By my reckoning, something like 62 points is going to be the minimum requirement and that means four wins and a draw at least from the remaining seven games.
The obvious route is beating Newcastle, Burnley, Brighton and Norwich leaving us to scab a point off Chelsea, Man City or Liverpool.
Not impossible, but far from straightforward.
As the lads like to say though, we go one game at a time and this will be a good test at a rejuvenated St. James’ Park.
Newcastle
Expect a hot atmosphere tomorrow night because the Geordies know they’re probably one more win away from securing their Premier League status.
Three successive defeats have just reintroduced a small amount of doubt, but in context, two of those losses were to Chelsea and in-form Spurs.
Although they still need to play Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal, their other winnable fixtures combined with a decent head start should be sufficient for survival.
The money they spent in January looks like money well spent with Trippier (now injured), Burn, Targett and Wood all making contributions in important wins. Marquee signing Bruno Guimarães has had limited game time but got his first goal a few weeks back and may well start tomorrow.
Allan Saint-Maximin is their most obvious attacking threat while Chris Wood has an excellent scoring record against Wolves so limiting service to both of those players will be key.
The home end
Some comments lifted from the pre-match thread on a popular Newcastle forum.
There won’t be much in this at all. Wolves have the best away record in the league outside the top three. The foundation of that is they’re a really solid defensive unit. That’ll be boosted by the returns of Boly and Semedo. While defensively solid they have found goals hard to come by and that won’t be helped with missing their biggest two threats in Neves and Jiminez. That means they’ll be relying on a tricky but erratic front three of Podence, Trincao and Silva to do the damage. Yesterday’s horror show aside. We haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since December, but much like Wolves we haven’t exactly been electric in front of goal either. I do think we have to factor in a bouncing SJP under the lights. I think this will be a fairly low scoring game and I’m torn between 0-0 or 1-0 to us.
Win this, get beat off Leicester, beat Palace and stay up. Buy 16 new players in the summer and win the league next season. Easy.
They are super good on the counter, and very hard to break down. I wouldn’t personally go pressing these too high. They are such a well drilled team, and that midfield is very dominant. Lage has done a great job.
I can’t see where our goals will come from at the minute, we haven’t scored nor looked like scoring from open play since the Southampton game. Couple this with playing one of the best defences in the league and I think we will do well to get a draw.
Wolves
Well done to Bruno for going the opposite way to my proposed tactics for the Villa game and being proven 100% correct. I didn’t think a midfield two would do enough to stop them playing through us, but Moutinho and Dendoncker did superbly and the front three got into their defence far better than I expected.
It’s a different proposition away from home so I wonder if we’ll see changes? It would be harsh for anyone to drop out, but it is difficult to second guess Bruno as he will adapt to suit a particular game.
The wingback situation is very interesting. Semedo was in contention for Player of the Season prior to his injury but Jonny has come into the side and looks even better. You’ve then got the talented Ait-Nouri and the more physically capable Marcal offering great options down the other side. I can see there being a lot of rotation between these players between now and May.
Fabio and Trincao have seen their stock surge in recent weeks but they have to prove they can perform consistently. Podence continues to infuriate and dazzle in almost equal measures so it’s a very mercurial front three.
Last time out
Wolves were worthy winners at Molineux earlier in the season. We should have been a couple of goals up before Newcastle got level in contentious fashion, blasting the ball into an empty net after Jose Sa was seemingly taken out in the build-up. But Hwang got his second smartly taken goal of the game to win it in the second half.
Both games ended 1-1 last season with Ruben Neves equalising via a smart diving header at St James’ Park. Newcastle had dominated up to that point but Wolves could have won it late on and Fabio saw a point-blank header clawed out right at the death.

I didn’t back us against Villa so I’ll be more optimistic about tomorrow.
The atmosphere in the ground will present a challenge, so we need to be strong early on and work into the game. Newcastle remain vulnerable defensively and if we can play in their half, I’d expect us to create openings.
I want to see the likes of Fabio and Trincao get on the ball and play with the same confidence we saw last Saturday.
Bringing Marcal and Boly into the side has given us more beef defensively, which is important when we’re so lightweight further forward. I also think Jonny makes a huge difference because he joins in with the attacking play better than our other wingbacks and occupies good positions. Although I’d be loathe to move him, I must admit I’d like to see him down the left and Semedo down the right at some point as that could be the best combination long term.
The last time Newcastle tasted victory was 10th March, away to Southampton, a 2-1 win against another team struggling for consistency.
Since then they have had 3 consecutive losses, all away from home. 1-0 at Chelsea, 1-0 at Everton and a humbling 5-1 at Spurs.
Having lost their first match in April, we’d be fools to expect anything other than a bounce back from the Magpies on Friday evening. Their beady eyes will be fixed on disrupting our late sprint for the shiny prize of European football.
However, the rare calamitous collapse ( Leeds ) aside, this is a resilient Wolves. A confident Wolves. Yes, we will be without our midfield magician Neves, but as Villa will attest, we didn’t really miss him, certainly in the first half last Saturday. His absence would certainly be more of an issue against teams above us, but our current squad should have no fears playing against any of those teams below us. The closest of which, by the way, is 12 points away. That’s a huge gap.
Fabio Silva has earned another start. His performance last time out was probably his best so far. So much stronger, more physical, running in behind, going long and short. A complete performance, except for an elusive goal.
Our goals for tally is still our Achilles heel but we have scored more goals in 2022 than any other Premier League team except Man City and Liverpool. Honestly.
If we play like we did against Villa we should have enough to come away with at least a point, but three points, well that would ignite our end of the season thrust for 6th or 7th.
This is another game we really need to win. With our remaining 6 games after this including Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, maximum points from 3 of Norwich, Brighton, Newcastle and Burnley, plus picking up a draw would add 10 to our current tally of 59. Even that may not be enough. Realistically we are competing against Man Utd and West Ham. Arsenal and Spurs, both 5 points ahead of us and with 1 or 2 games in hand are probably out of reach of even the most optimistic predictions.
Of the top 8 we are clearly least favourite to succeed in our push for Europe, but it is all to play for and very much in our hands, starting tomorrow night.
Are there any Wolves supporters out there who wouldn’t have taken that position 8 months ago?

If we count the conference league as ‘Europe’ then 8th will probably do it (Palace need to win the FA cup for that not to happen), while 8th could even be good enough to qualify for the Europa league if West Ham win it this season as I think that they’d then be in the Champions League. That’s enough for me to become a temporary Hammers supporter tonight before our boys do the job at Newcastle.
I fear not as no country can have more than 7 teams in UEFA competitions as I understand it .Even for 7 th my understanding is that apart from Palace winning the Cup which is relatively unlikely I believe that if Leicester win the Europa Conference which is much more likely they will take the 7 th team’s European place .
Thus a lot of things have to go our way as well as our needing at least 60 points !

Very good summary as ever, Thomas. The away end comments also add good value too from a purely objective view and are always interesting when we consider how far we have come this season. The Toon are clearly nervous and rightly so given our master class of counter attacking football last time out. They won’t go gung-ho and it may be a game of attrition. However, if Podence is fit to play I fancy a ground out win- as someone previously has commented, when he plays we tend to score and win. Fabio to break his duck this season.
After finishing in an around the top ten in the Prediction League for the last two seasons, I have had a poor run this time out largely because I haven’t been confident of us being able to put the ball into the net. I’ve too often gone for low score draws or losses based on our form in front of goal. And yet, somehow Bruno and the boys have managed to get the results and that is why we are sitting nicely in 8th and threatening another jaunt into the Euro League. It’s easy in hindsight, but I should have backed us more often.
Take the Villa match for example. Forgive me for a moment to highlight some negatives from a joyous and valuable derby win. Yes, we dominated much of the match, bagged a couple of goals and deservedly took the three points. The whole team put in a top level performance. What is not to like? But the manner of those goals still doesn’t fill me with confidence looking forward. Yes, Jonny’s finish was sublime for the first, but it took two Villa defenders sliding about on their arses and two missed attempts before the job was done (why didn’t Podence have the confidence to pull the trigger when one on one with the keeper?).
For the second, Trincao got ahead of his defender but just didn’t seem to want it enough before Ashley Young showed him just how difficult it was not to score from that sumptuous cross.
And that is not to mention a number of other chances that could or should have been taken.
Now I’m looking at Newcastle match. The Magpies have a had a poor run recently – the Eddie Howe honeymoon seems to have run its course. For us Silva is starting to show some strength and fight and the team seems to be clicking despite the absence of some key individuals.
And yet still, somewhere in the back of mind, there is that little Gremlin sneering “Yes, but where are our goals coming from?”.
Begone you green devil, you have beset me for too long. Our goals may come off the back of Dubravka’s noggin for all I care, but I am expecting a win !!
Draw for this one. As much as the Villa game surprised me, I doubt we can rely on every team we play to be as awful as they were for most of the match. I still see us lacking goals. Fabio and co up top are still fluffing to many chances to make us capable of routine wins.

The new manager bounce seems to have run its course and their rather astute signing who was making a real difference to them has been sidelined.
Another game changer for us I think can be the seven subs. If something isn’t working we have the players to change the game. ( I never thought I’d hear myself saying that before Christmas)
Add the fact that I’m making the long trek up for this one I want and expect nothing less than a massive win.

We haven’t got a good record up in Newcastle and they have bought themselves out of trouble with new management.
Saint-Maxim and Woods will be difficult to stop, but we need the win for a continuing Europe push, so here’s to another 3pts.
Newcastle’s new manager bounce seems to be over esp if they lost to a dire Everton who looked doomed without a serious upturn in form. We are brimming with confidence so hopefully Bruno doesn’t pay Toon too much respect and sticks with 343 and we go at em.
As good as Marcal has been in his last couple of games, personally i don’t think he pips Ait Nouri for a spot. He brings more muscle but that is countered by RAN’s creativity and for entertainment value that wins hands down in my book.
Competition for places is good though and pushing everyone to improve which means we have a semblance of a good squad. Hopefully that’ll shut the naysayers up for a bit.
I think we’ll qualify for the The TV Money Spinner Euro Conference Cup. All that competition does though is nail down the big six domination as smaller club’s squads become stretched or the quality within those squads is thinned out with affordable squad players given the lower resources available. This will affect teams domestic program adversively and entrench the current status quo further. It’s nothing more than crumbs from the kings table. It should be treated like the League Cup with similar teams feilded until the final.

If Wolves qualify for the Europa League conference, they should just say “No thanks”. All of the FFP issues they went through last time are probably not worth it just for that.
Plus it would be a great statement that teams don’t want to play as many games as these organizations want to line their pockets.
I’m going for a Wolves win on the basis that Bruno is finally getting the best out of the squad for any given match. Traore on loan to Barca? We’re now coping without him, when at one point we were wishing he was still around to bring on as a super sub. We can survive without Jimenez too, and the injured Neves. Neto coming back slowly,? We can survive without him too. Saiss and Kilman look shaky, no problem, we have replacements. Every member of the squad seems to be good enough, so we have a strong bench. This time last year under Nuno the bench looked poor.
Newcastle may have gone off the boil a bit and reverted to type, i.e. struggling this season after the expected new-owner/coach/spending bounce. But it wasn’t much of a bounce. Wolves are learning to score first and more than once. Those matches when we should be 3,4 or 5 up in the first half will begin to happen if we create the chances. 3-1 tomorrow.

I was surprised to see Villa made favourites last week,same now with Newcastle. Maybe because we’re without those two, but as others have said, we are fine without them. Other stars are available in our super squad.

I’m surprised too about the odds. The bookies were generous, but the fat lady hasn’t sung yet. For Newcastle, I got 12/5 for Wolves to win and 13/2 with BTTS. My prediction league guess is 3-1.
Against Villa, I came up trumps twice with 19/10 and 11/2 for the same bets. I was gutted for Wolves with that penalty, but it did pay out for my 11/2 BTTS bet! Mind you, I only forecast a 1 -0 win in the prediction league.
I’m doing better with the bookies than the prediction league. We’re consistently underrated by the bookies and media pundits. In the Liverpool v Watford match last weekend, Carragher called Watford as Wolves at one point in the commentary. It’s the way we are perceived I guess. We will have the last laugh.

However it must of dawned on Wor Eddie as he washes down another pickled egg with another bottle of Canny Toon Broon that the days of quaffing Lambrini and Canapes amongst the decrepid OAP’s at Roy Hodgeson’s gaff on the Saaff Coast is a whole lifetime away. And several degrees colder. That pinched expression comes from facing into a minus 30 blizzard for too long. Fabio is starting to show he can stand up to the defenders unlike last season when he was easily knocked off the ball. Fabio to score 2 now he is feeling confident.
As fans we can only dream and speculate about what might happen next match, next week, next month etc but at the moment nothing is more important than Friday night’s game. This has got draw written all over it, says me who is usually wrong.
A bit late commenting as I’m in a B&B in Oxford, where I was born and bred, after having just got back from a gig – in a venue just a hundred yards from where I spent the first ten years of my life – by one of my favourite bands, Police Dog Hogan.

Slightly off topic, reading of the forthcoming international match, England v Hungary, to be played at Molineux, brings to mind those famous televised matches in the fifties when Wolves beat various overseas teams, including the Hungarian champions Honved, and Moscow Spartak. On the first occasion Stan Cullis literally flooded the midfield, to bog down the mighty Magyars…..that was after England had been beaten 6-3 at home, and 7-1 in the return match away. Johnny Hancocks – smaller than Podense, five foot four and size 3 boots !

Quick observation this afternoon on the radio. ABSOLUTE RADIO Sports news ‘ Wolves aiming to go within 2 points of the top 4’ and an interview clip with Bruno. BBC Radio 5 live Sports news ‘ Newcastle aiming to stop a run of 3 defeats. And Joe Bloggs is back from injury’. Convinced the BBC sports department is run by Frank Skinner.
Tricky one to predict and I’m going for a one all draw, Newcastle have improved too much to lose another on the trot. Mind you, it depends which Wolves team turns up and whether Newcastle get nervy as this is one they probably need to win to be certain of survival.
Well this could be a tough Friday night. Newcastle are improved, at home, but still a bit unpredictable so it’s a tough one to call.

Final prediction. We will undoubtedly get screwed over by Ref/VAR at some point and expect at least one dodgy penalty for Toon. And a blatant penalty overlooked for Wolves.
Very poor first half from Wolves. Sloppy at the back, casual in midfield and absolutely no movement from the front three. Hwang has been particularly poor.
We need Neto on for the second half and an almighty bollocking for everyone at half time.
This game is still there for winning as Toon are nothing special but we need to be a lot more positive.

That was a dismal performance and we got what we deserved. Hwang and Fabio were poor today. Neto should have been on at half time. Awful performance.

Saw a few replays of the pen on telly and it looked decidedly dodgy. Seen them ruled out for Wolves. Arsenal away. Liverpool away. But we were shite and deserved nothing.
