Things aren’t so bad after all.
Turns out, despite the apocalyptic musings of Wolves Twitter, that Jimenez isn’t finished and Dendoncker can kick a ball.
And, while the need for reinforcements remains, results like this show that there is a method to Fosun’s (perceived) madness.
Cast your eye over the Spurs defence and you’ll see that, contrary to popular belief, money can’t buy you everything.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but their centre halves cost over £100m while their imperious old gold counterparts cost less than £10m.
Nelson Semedo cost significantly more than Matt Doherty, but nobody is doubting that he is a significant upgrade on the Irishman.
It’s a similar story in midfield, where Academy graduate Luke Cundle more than coped against January arrival Rodrigo Bentancur.
None of this is to say that our owners are infallible, of course. I just wish some people would cut them some slack.
Anyway, on to the matter at hand. We were excellent today weren’t we?
It’s showings like that which demonstrate just how astute a tactician Bruno is.
He completely outwitted Conte in the first half, with the extra man in midfield allowing us to get more bodies in and around the box.
It helped that Spurs were so porous in possession, but we were far more clinical here than we were on Thursday night.
There was more purpose to our attacking play, with Jimenez and Podence linking together superbly. I thought the latter was particularly good in the first half, regularly dropping into pockets of space that Spurs were unable to plug.
There was probably an element of good fortune to both goals, with the home side’s defending leaving a lot to be desired. But you’ve still got to take the chances when they come, and Jimenez and Dendoncker did that with aplomb.
The second half was a slightly different story, as was to be expected, but we looked pretty comfortable throughout, with Sa and in particular Kilman intervening when needed.
I’m running out of superlatives for our defensive man mountain at this point. He’s well on the way to becoming a Molineux great at this rate. Surely an England debut is around the corner?
It was good to see the bench looking in better health too. Hwang, Trincao and Silva are good options to call upon, and things are only going to get better with Neto seemingly on the verge of his long awaited comeback.
All in all, things are looking much rosier than they were three days ago. It’s a funny old game isn’t it?
A fantastic result after the bitter disappointment of arsenal. Well done to the team, Bruno and his staff for bouncing back in style. Absolutely delighted to see Cundle make his full debut too, can only do him the world of good and help strengthen our midfield options too.
Interesting to read in the E&S Bruno’s reasoning as to why he chose to play Cundle, having evaluated his scouting reports, and he and the players having trust in Luke’s ability to do the job.

I have a glass half empty approach to life so I know I will get slaughtered for this but I thought Jiminez and Podence were shocking in the second half. The reckless flicks, falling down and rolling around as the play moves towards Wolves end, it really infuriates me. If there is one complaint about Bruno Lage is he doesn’t respond quick enough with substitutions.

I, for one, can’t argue with your substitutions comment because, to my eyes, Podence was clearly knackered and also injured long before he was withdrawn and perhaps that’s why he was regularly losing the ball and conceding possession. He had an excellent first half though.
Had to take the missus shopping so missed the match so difficult to determine if Wolves were excellent or Spurs were rubbish?

I never take any notice of the ‘fans’ on twitter. Wonder how many of them were at PNE in division 3 first game 2013 ? How wonderful it is to see opposing fans comments on BBC HYS describing us as a decent side. How times have changed since 2013. How brilliant is it to be going to iconic grounds like Man Utd and Spurs and turning them over without conceding a goal. We’ve waited 40 odd years for this and thanks to Fosun we have it. Oh. Humble pie eating time guys. Raul`s performance today was vintage. Yes, the Spurs defense was poor for our first goal, but the goal still had to be scored. The manner in which Raul chested the ball down, before picking his spot and volleying home was simply outstanding.
Form thereon, confidence back in abundance, Raul was at the heart of most of the good things we did. His hold up play, and ability to bring others play, exceptional.
Take a look at the videos, Harry Kane, and observe how world class strikers do the business.

I had planned to listen to the Wolves TV commentary, but when I finally made the connection I found the Covid-hit Mikey Burrows commenting from home while the team at the game were audible to Mikey but not to anyone else. At half time they tried to mend whatever was wrong, but nothing appeared at all for the second half. Which is why I ended up following the updates from the E&S, the BBC and Sky to keep in touch.
I also tried the Wolves Matchday Blog and was treated to this comment – “Kane has just smashed a shot high and wide into the stand behind the goal.” The trouble was that they got the vowel wrong in the word “shot”. It was changed as soon as they noticed it, but the original version seemed to sum up the Spurs man’s performance rather well!!.
I had the same problem with the Wolves TV commentary Jazzwolf, and was so frustrated I tried googling ‘Spurs v Wolves commentary’ and found one being broadcast on YouTube – even with the appropriate Black Country accent. And as you say Wolves TV eventually came to life.
Isn’t it funny how the different text updates and commentary are all a few minutes out !

Yes, the time differences are interesting.
From time to time my wife will put on Final Score on the Red Button. If I’m listening to the WolvesTV commentary this is really off-putting, you see the goal flash on the TV at least 30 seconds before the commentary tells you about it, it rather defeats the object of listening ‘live’. I suppose it’s a bit like someone telling a joke and someone else giving the punch line away just before they get to it.

Perspective is everything and things are never as bad as they seem ( or as good come to think of it ). A life lesson perfectly demonstrated in our last few games. An awesome January, two defeats where many start questioning yet again all things Wolves, from individual players to Fosun’s long term ambitions and recruitment strategy. Then today, and everything is awesome again.
Great performance. Sa, a hairy moment aside was excellent, Kilman amazing, Podence back to near his best, Neves pure class, and how good to see Raul hitting form and scoring. Brilliant to see Dendoncker on the score sheet. That won’t do his confidence any harm, and a really solid first start for Cundle – Moutinho’s boots are big – well done lad !
Great team performance away in London and well in the hunt for a European spot, whisper it but fourth place within touching distance.
With Jonny and in particular Neto coming back, and Moutinho almost certainly coming back next game, we can continue to be optimistic.
The away support in that magnificent stadium was brilliant – it always is !

Waiting to get a glimpse of any of the actual football (5 minutes MotD) but a great result and it seems a bit of a tactical masterclass by Bruno.
The contrast highlighted above by Ben in terms of Spurs profligacy v. our “good husbandry” is true.
But there is a happy medium. There are mitigating factors I know – pandemic financial issues and FFP etc. but there is also a happy medium. Our net transfer spend in the 5 years since Nuno arrived is around £2oo million total. The “ones for the future” strategy” is great but not in isolation. Additionally the stadium redevelopment has become a distant mirage despite the attendance being over 30,000 at every league match since promotion and usually sold out.
As I understand it our FFP constraints expire in the close season. Our squad is deficient in quantity WITH quality and Bruno is performing miracles with the playing resources we have.
Fosun have rescued a terminally under achieving football club from long term mediocrity – well done.. But if they wish to keep the club equipped to compete as a permanent PL mid table club, never mind the grandiose ambitions they came in with, then they will have to up the ante significantly. The “ones for the future” strategy hasn’t produced too many dividends so far and needs to run alongside, not in the place of a well balanced transfer recruitment strategy with an adequate budget.
We clearly have the playing resources to see us comfortably through this season with a respectable finish position almost certain. I still feel that European qualification is unrealistic and could even be counter productive without significant squad investment.
What happens next will tell us a whole lot about our future under Fosun. So Guo, Jeff and co. do you want to finish the job you started so well, but also noisily and ambitiously with sky high objectives? So far so good, but only time will tell and crunch time is close. Standing still is going backwards, retrenchment is a mirage.
Today though, again well done to the lads today and let’s see out this season in fine style.

Your view of negative is my realism. If you bother to read the whole piece properly you will see that it has a historical perspective and a future one. All I’m doing is posing the relevant questions not being negative. You also selectively ignore the several historical positive references to Fosun in my post. Believe it or not there are some who don’t necessarily subscribe to your viewpoint without question.

Yes, well done the lads, but the squad is not deficient in any way, Bruno is a very good manager, but miracles are not required. We were not terminally underachieving, neither were we a long term mediocrity. That’s a team, yes, a team, of very good players, playing for the manager and the fans and each other. We, and Fosun, can anticipate a possible top six, or even top four finish, but whatever, we’ll enjoy watching our team perform very well against the top PL teams.
I don’t expect, or think we need significant investment. As for the stadium redevelopment, that’ll come, but in today’s climate it’s understandable that they hesitate.
You obviously share all fans’ enthusiasm for success, so we’re on the same side. I for one am happy to go with the current Wolves scenario; it has not often been better since the days of Billy Wright !

Thanks for a balanced response. I think I am oft misunderstood, I don’t intend to be overcritical and don’t think I am. My overriding point is that you can’t just progress with “the ones for the future philosophy” alone and I stand by that. We need to import experienced talent as well.
Come next summer we have to face the possibility that we could lose both Neves and Moutinho and I doubt whether that could be overcome from within. Is there a contingency plan? We have never adequately replaced Jota and before and since his injury Jiminez has had to plough a lone furrow for too long.
I too have been through the good, bad and ugly all the way back to 1959 so can hardly be accused of being a fine weather supporter, I must have attended thousands of matches home and away during that time and am enjoying the current era as much as any I’ve seen and a lot more than most.
And no we don’t want to overstretch our resources. But Fosun have been here for 6 years now and after all their positive input stagnation and decline which inevitably go hand in hand would be tragic.
I know it’s a fine line but the right balance has to be struck. For the last 2 years (with mitigation) Fosun have retreated into a shell and now is the time to come out of it. The pandemic is hopefully in retreat and our FFP sanctions expire in the summer. I am not suggesting mass expenditure just a shift in emphasis back towards more inbound investment on a controlled basis.
We are approaching a watershed and I believe we need to move onwards with a bolder approach to “evolution is better than revolution” than we have been doing in recent times.
Pre game conmitments precluded watching the match live, but what fun later, knowing the score, and watching the whole game, with a Spanish commentary!

Great performance and tactics from Bruno. Two games in a week which showed the good and and the no so good side of this squad.
Again Bruno has worked wonders with what he has putting Cundle in was a risk but what choice did Bruno have and there in lies the problem. The fact Cundle did not let him down is brilliant for the team and the player, but it is only one game.
To be consistent and competitive week in week out then the squad needs up dating.
Example Dendonker brilliant today but that’s just one game in three years that I’ve been able to say that will he be the same against the Foxes going on his past form I’d have to say no! He is just not consistent enough that’s why he’s not been in the team regularly he’s only in today because of injuries and Trinco is no better.
If he could reproduce the performance he did today week in week out or even 80 per cent of the time then we wouldn’t be talking about the need to get a ball winning box to box midfielder.
The squad doesn’t need to be that much bigger just better quality if we really want break into the next level/top six.
Just as spending millions doesn’t mean success just ask Spurs fans it’s how you spend your money that matters and who you is doing the spending the manager or the chairman.

Firstly, I have to say that Spuds defence is, perhaps, in need of a little TLC. Happily, the same can’t be said about the Wanderers back line which remained imperious against the ever more desperate efforts of Kane, Son et al to dent their superiority.
Big shout out to Max K who is easily on a par with VVD as the best defender in the league. So skilful. So composed. So dominant whoever he is facing.
Also well done Luke Cundle. No risk at all in playing him, Bruno says, as he does it every day in training. But he acquitted himself excellently.
Important goals for Raul and the Donk came about because we had loads of men in the box, something we’ve seen too little of recently.
Overall a very, very, very pleasing performance and one of which the whole club can be proud.

Some weeks ago I advised of a really good novel called ‘The Match’ by George Brent. I somehow suspected that Mr Brent could well be a Wolves fan.
Since then I read a very favorable Press Release relating to the book, which gave his e.mail address. Anyway, I contacted him and he confirmed his fanatical long term support of our team. He told me that it was Wolves`s desperate financial plight in the dark days of he 1980`s which prompted his writing of the novel, and this is in fact the basis of his plot.
I have since exchanged a number of communications with Mr, Brent, and some of his tales of his early escapades on the South Bank are hilarious. He loves the good old days

I managed to get this small bet on with BetVictor when I saw the line up, and the strong bench with Jonny. I thought we would lose but I came to my senses in time! From the start of the season I thought Bruno was a breath of fresh air after Nuno’s decline. The Fosun business model is the only sustainable way forward. Just look at Man U, Spurs and Barca, now paying for years of profligacy in spending. And they haven’t just wasted money on players, Spurs must have the best stadium in the world for a mid-table team (!) followed closely by Arsenal’s.
Bruno is doing one hell of a job. Is there a player he hasn’t improved? He’s taken Max Kilman from Nuno’s scapegoat, to an England-class player. Cundle and Gomez have come in and played to the manner born. I reckon these three players have cost us a grand total of under a million quid. What would it cost to go into the transfer market and buy three players for these positions? Kilman must be the biggest bargain from non-league since Jamie Vardy. I can hardly wait for Jonny and Neto to be back to match sharpness.
In my opinion Bruno is as good a coach as Pep, Klopp and Tuchel. But pound for pound, in terms of the relative cost of the respective squads, he’s head and shoulders above the others in actual achievements.
With you on Bruno’s contribution DWW – absolutely fantastic. Sadly and for whatever reasons Nuno somehow lost the plot latterly and Mr Lage is like a breath of fresh air. He also has a more varied approach to post match press briefings.

A couple of things
1- Doherty got a few boos from the wolves which surprised me, he didn’t look too chatty whilst marking coady but I was just wondering if anything happened?
2- there’s something very wrong with Antonio conti wearing a baseball cap with a cock on a ball badge ?

Laughable
In my view, Wolves have a well balanced team and a squad which is showing more depth than of late. There are no “ marquee signings” , ( thought that was a tent) , and our younger on loan players, such as Giles, Corbeanu, Gibbs White and Connor are all valued highly by their respective clubs.
Wolves have something which is difficult to achieve and does not happen overnight. There is a culture of valuing and understanding each other . Roles and responsibilities are clear. We should never underestimate the enormous influence of Conor Coady. Did you see him go to Cundle after the game against Spurs. When interviewed he is confident , friendly and thanks the interviewer, unlike many players who look embarrassed and cannot wait to walk off. Off -field the leadership given by Bruno Lage and his team is clearly highly effective and respected by the players.
The players under Bruno are learning to improve individually and as members of a well balanced team.
As a seven year old , in 1952, I watched the Wolves with my Dad, although I remember being passed down over the heads of supporters to the touchline in order to get a better view. ( how times have changed). We are I hope, on course to reach those halcyon days once more.
On a different note, I note with sadness how some contributors to this site respond to the often considered, views of others, and immediately tap with a thumbs down if there is something with which they disagree. This is sometimes followed up with a discourteous critical response.
Personally, I would scrap this system. It is open to abuse .
However, I suppose that is the nature of a blog and we are all big boys.

On the squad front with you almost all the way but I do feel we lack a little strength in depth even allowing for those youngsters coming through. I get it that it helps to keep a tight knit unit but there have been times this season when the bench has looked very threadbare.
I’m a little behind you in terms of longevity but can go back to the last time we won the FA Cup and I also believe that CC is the best captain we’ve had since Bill Slater though would also give a big shout for Mike Bailey. And for sure Bruno has brought the best out of most of this squad. For me the most noteworthy is the toning down of the wild side of Saiss who looks much more responsible and a better player as a result.
I found your observation about downvotes very interesting. I managed to accrue 29 thumbs downs above for (imo) a relatively mild critique of Fosun’s stewardship of our club. We don’t all agree on every aspect but many bloggers who have dared to question the party line have thrown in the towel from this blog over recent months and years, which is a pity. Loss of balanced debate is detrimental to any forum and mildly critical and constructive opinions should welcomed. And I am also the first to acknowledge the positive contribution made by our current owners since their arrival. That doesn’t mean that we can’t strive to do still better – the self styled “big 6” has yet to be disbanded and it won’t be achieved on a shoestring That was Fosun’s declared objective on arrival and that will requite heavier investment on and off the field.
Meanwhile I continue to enjoy the ride.
There is plenty of time yet if they really have the stomach for it.
