There was much made of the fact we had a tough start to the season.
But the reality is over the first 11 games, it’s been a comfortable ride.
We’ve only played one of the seven teams above us in the table and none of the really big hitters.
Between now and Christmas we’ll get a proper idea about the ceiling of this group and that starts this weekend against a really smart looking West Ham side.
It was a bit of a no-show against Palace and I didn’t like how we just seemed to get worn down and put to sleep in that game. We must do better tomorrow or we’ll be in big trouble again.
West Ham
Between the league and cup competitions, the Hammers have seen off everyone.
Liverpool experienced their first loss in any competition at the London Stadium just before the international break and are now looking north in the table at David Moyes’ team who sit just three points from the summit.
Both Manchesters have been dumped out of the League Cup and they’ll rightly feel they’ve got as good a chance as anyone to win that trophy. The same applies to the Europa League where they’ve been dominant in most of their games to date.
None of this is a surprise. They were good last season and have just carried on that steady consistency and improved as a team.
That said, there is hope with mid-range teams like Palace, Brentford and Southampton all getting results against them.
I like the balance of quality and elbow grease, which isn’t something you’ve been able to say about West Ham teams over the years. Good for them.
It’s a blow to lose defender Angelo Ogbonna to a serious-looking injury and that may hamper their progress with so many games stretching the squad.
But they’ve still got a strong looking spine with Zouma, Rice and Antonio surrounded by players like Bowen, Benrahma and Soucek who’ve shown they can win games against the best.
The away end
Some thoughts lifted from the pre-match thread on the Knees Up Mother Brown forum.
We are going to learn an awful lot about our team in this game. In terms of how focused, hungry and determined they are to finish as high in the table as we did last season. It would be classic West Ham to pull off a shock win against Liverpool, then turn up to Molineux and get our tummy’s tickled. Hopefully we’ll want the win as much as we did against Liverpool!
Saw a good interview a couple of weeks ago with Coady explaining that the new manager had completely changed their style. They don’t sit back so much like they did under Nuno. They now press a lot more. Coady seemed genuinely enthused and motivated in a similar way Moyes has got our guys. Jiminez is back this season too. He is top calibre and makes a big difference to them in my opinion. I don’t think this is going to be an easy game at all. Then again…we are massive.
Tough game this for me. They will likely want to counter and frustrate us but if we are patient in possession, like the Villa game we can come away with 3 points. Coady struggles against a quick, physical striker. If Antonio is raring to go, he will win us this game.
Both teams at their peak we are certainly the stronger. But margins are very fine in the prem and if you are not at it you struggle. They will probably sit back and try to counter us. They have players that that can hurt on the break. Guess they will try Traore against Cresswell so he needs to be disciplined and not leave space in behind. We need to be ruthless and take our chances. 2-3 (Jiminez, Hwang : Dawson, Benrahma, Antonio), nervy finish.
Wolves
I think Bruno has some tough calls to make in this one. We were too passive and too lightweight as an attacking force against Palace and I do worry West Ham could bully us out of this in a similar fashion.
The obvious solution is to add some muscle and Traore for Trincao is like night and day in that respect. I don’t think we look as fluid in possession without Trincao but Adama’s directness could be an asset here and give them more to think about.
With a similar rationale, he might consider Dendoncker in midfield or Marcal in defence just to make us a bit more robust and nasty against a team that will test us all over the pitch.
The odds
The odds unsurprisingly are in the visitors’ favour but try online casino real money for some more gambling fun.

Last time out
We got doubled last season having doubled West Ham the previous two seasons. Hopefully we’re not working towards symmetry. It turned into a proper battering at the London Stadium and could have been worse than the eventual 4-0 scoreline in what was arguably the worst performance we ever saw under Nuno.
At 3-0 down in the reverse fixture it threatened to get even worse, but we got it back to 3-2 and possibly did enough over the course of the 90 to warrant a point.
Predictions
Nobody predicted a 2-0 defeat at Selhurst Park so it was slim pickings for Prediction League points last time out.
Cannock Wolf still leads the way at the top of the overall table at the end of Gameweek 11.

West Ham are a more complete team and over 90 mins I don’t have confidence we’ll have answers for everything they throw at us.
Antonio is a big worry and if he does get isolated against any of our defenders, I’ll be getting a sweat on. They’re a seriously physical side with Soucek and Zouma also piling forward for set-pieces so we’ll need to get through some work from corners and free-kicks. But they can hurt you from open play too with Bowen and Fornals willing runners with and without the ball.
From a Wolves perspective, we’ve either got to control the game with possession as we did against Everton and get Raul/Hwang into those pockets of space where they can turn and do damage, or get the likes of Traore and Donk in the team and make it more of a slugfest. Which way Bruno will sway I do not know.
Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to another 3pm Saturday kick-off at Molineux and what will be a great atmosphere.
I am also not optimistic. They are very good and fast.
After the Palace performance I don’t really see us getting much here . . . . . but Wolves never fail to surprise me. Hoping my prediction is hopelessly wrong.
As suggested above, Antonio against Cody could be a key duel but I think the game could be won elsewhere. With three up front we seem lightweight in midfield. Wouldn’t mind seeing Donk come in to make it a 5 and use two up front. Jimi and Hwang. Can always change if it isn’t working.
Hard game, coady weak against physical strikers, lets roar them on , any old ones remember julian dicks, and that cech gk, we used to sing bully,s going to get u, happy days, wolves aie we.
We have got to bolster midfield after that performance against CP be adventurous and go with Back 4 and 3 in the middle and 3 up top bring back Traore 2-1 to the Wolves.
Obviously probably going to be tricky for Wolves. Moyes has built a good squad ( Man U should have kept faith in him but club politics undermined all his efforts) and on their day are match for a any side.
On form over the last eighteen months West Ham should be comfortable winners with better players in nearly every position. But like the Hammers supporter above I think Wolves can something out of this fixture. Not because of any any clever insights just a gut feeling. And of course blind optimism.
They’re a good side and I just think they’ll be better than us.

The Lage project seems to mid table fodder. The performance here could tell us a lot about whether that is upper mid table or lower mid table.
I think West Ham have too much for us, but it could be a mauling. Hoping it will be tight though.
Chesterwolf I think that’s a bit harsh we have the same players as last season bar Whang and Trincao and they are finding it difficult to get away from Nuno s style of play he needs more time and more support in the transfer window.
Need to play three in midfield ….simple …elsewise we are going to get over run. If we don’t Antonio will have a field day against Coady & Co.

West Ham are a physical powerful side these days and so to me he has to play three in midfield adding Donk and Traore .
If he does not I think we will lose as they will overrun us in midfield and Coady will once again be exposed to a physical centre forward in Antonio .I love him but this is why he will never be a really top class centre back and in that sense always a weak link for us .
Is that Mr Conner Coady who just captained England to a 10 – 0 international World Cup qualifier victory, away from home?
That was against one of the very worst teams in world football .
Southgate is never going to pick him as first choice and I understand why not .He would not get in to any of the top teams

Whenever I mention that name to anyone in England, they immediately turn into Glenn Campbell, and start warbling the song of the same name.
Why the f… am I going on about Galveston, I hear you ask.
Well, I have a very good client who I do a lot of work for, in Galveston, and he is a fanatical Hammers fan, so piss taking has been rife this week.
He owns a bed and breakfast, and I told him, just like his establishment, there won’t be any clean sheets for West Ham this weekend.
Anyway, I have to begrudgingly admit, they have a very good side, and probably Coady and Co. will get over run by pace tomorrow.
However, this will not stop our forwards running riot, and we will come away with a hard fought, very narrow, 5-1 victory.

Lets be honest we are proably starting 2 down with Dean in the middle and Mariner in Stockley Park.
If they play like the last time out it could get very embarrasing, but hopefully we will find something positive from somewhere, just wish I knew where from. The January window can’t come quick enough for me, we need reinforcements big time in my opinion.
Let’s be honest, when we expect the lads to win they usually come up with a dire performance a la Brentford and last week. When we are down in the dumps after a poor performance they often surprise us. So that’s what I’m banking on.
Supporting Wolves is always a roller coaster. After the first three games when we played brilliantly but lost, I thought things would soon click and we would start scoring lots of goals That did not happen and we picked up points despite not reaching anywhere near the levels of the first three games. After Everton, I again was optimistic but then the Crystal palace game left me in despair once again.
So I have no idea what will happen tomorrow but live in hope of a good performance and a win.
I fear our midfield is too lightweight and we’re going to get overrun.
Yeh, I too think Wham are ahead of us in their development this year. Bruno has seemed very reluctant to use his subs recently and has just persisted with his starting xi rather than making use of the out-ball relief supplied by Adama.
Nevertheless I like Bruno and I hope we will see something different today. We’re going to need to if we want to beat the hammers who are firing on all cylinders it seems.

This is the best West Ham side in years. We’ve got to be so much better than we were at palace . I knew in the first 20 mins we were not getting anything there as they were so solid in their positions and west ham have looked like like that this season. I’m going for a wolves win but more in hope than judgment !

The Crystal Palace capitulation was very disappointing after our recent run. Let’s hope it was just a bad day at the office and we can pick it up again after the international break.
West Ham, though, are not the ideal team to play for that to happen. They are a really good team at the moment and in some ways they play a similar style to Palace – only better. So they may be able to exploit the same weaknesses. Let’s hope Lage has learnt one or two things from the Palace game to put to use on Saturday.
It’ll be closer this time. Everybody’s got us down to lose OK I’ll go along with that. Odd goal in five but it’ll be a great team effort to attempt to pull back a first half deficit. Yes?

Well, I’ve said that West Ham are the new Leicester and I stick by that. It’s pretty predictable which West Ham will turn up tomorrow (it’ll be the ‘new Leicester’ version) but I don’t know which Wolves team will turn up! Generally we’ve gone from playing well and losing, to playing badly and winning, to playing badly and losing. I’d really like us to try playing well and winning! I can see a few goals tomorrow and we will probably share the points.
Never rated moyes but boy has he got his act together and fair play to the man.
Bruno has to change and get his act together from that palace performance..that’s obvious .
3 in the middle a must or we will be ripped up i feel.
If we get a point that will be a result against an ammers side who are super confident .

A really tough game, with West Ham in great form.
It’s hard to predict Wolves, after an international break. Starting eleven will be difficult too – is Traore ready to come back in? Will Podence get a deserved chance? I rather think he will stick with Trincao.
I think midfield will be the key battleground. Not sure what to think about who starts here. Just hope we go for it, from the start.
My first visit to Molineux in almost two years, really looking forward to a pint or two in the Great Western and three lovely points…
Got to be optimistic that Palace game was just a bad day at the office. If we play like we did against Everton, be a good game. Deep down tad worried about this one, they are flying high and have some pretty good midfielders and forwards who can hurt us.
Can never predict a loss for the lads. But, if we turn up and the Mol rocks maybe, just maybe….
Wolves v West Ham United – a bittersweet memory
In his 1976 autobiography, Bill Shankly paid high tribute to Cullis, saying: “While Stan [Cullis] was volatile and outrageous in what he said, he never swore. And he could be as soft as mash. He would give you his last penny. Stan was 100 per cent Wolverhampton. His blood must have been of old gold. He would have died for Wolverhampton. Above all, Stan is a very clever man who could have been successful at anything. When he left Wolverhampton, I think his heart was broken and he thought the whole world had come down on top of him. All round, as a player, as a manager, and for general intelligence, it would be difficult to name anyone since the game began who could qualify to be in the same class as Stan Cullis.”
On September 15th 1964 dad’s love affair with all things Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club came to a shuddering halt. The day after Wolves’ first victory of the 1964/65 campaign, Stan Cullis and WWFC parted company. Dad had two heroes – Field Marshall Montgomery of El Alamein under whom he served in WW2 and Stan Cullis (Cullis also spent some time in North Africa and actually played football with the likes of Joe Mercer entertaining the 8th Army). Unlike his teammates, rebel Stan refused to give the Nazi salute when England played in Berlin in 1938.
Cullis’s last game in charge of his beloved Wolves was versus FA cup holders West Ham United, an evening league fixture under the Molineux lights on 14th September 1964. Wolves’ poor start to the season resulted in no wins in 7 games and the chairman and directors of the club were getting twitchy. The previous season Wolves finished 16th and two seasons prior to that 18th which was a far cry from the halcyon days of the 1950’s but supporters generally had faith in Cullis to steady the boat.
The match itself was a truly exciting affair as Wolves put aside their indifferent start (including a 5/0 drubbing at Upton Park the previous week) and blitzed into a 4/0 lead with goals from Ray Crawford (2), Gerry Harris and the mercurial Peter “Knocker” Knowles. Stung into action West Ham stormed back. Goals from Peter Brabrook, Johnny “Budgie” Byrne and an own goal by Gerry Harris, which earned him the distinction of scoring for both teams, made for a tense climax. The overall performance gave supporters heart that the club could climb the table out of trouble with Cullis at the helm.
Less than 24 hours later Stan was gone. The “Iron Manager” (title of his biography) from Ellesmere Port on The Wirral was no longer leading his beloved Wolves. West Ham at Molineux proved to be his final throw of the gold and black dice to the disbelief of dad and which more or less led to his love of the game waning.
Strangely enough there is an area in Ellesmere Port known as Little Wolverhampton. Whilst Stan Cullis obviously helped cement the bond between the 2 places, way back in the early 1900’s, The Wolverhampton Corrugated Iron Company in Horsley Fields, owned by the Jones Brothers, made the astonishing decision to move the factory lock, stock and barrel to Ellesmere Port. This was due to lack of expansion available in Wolverhampton and the equally frustrating issues with shipping their in-demand goods to Australia and the USA. Over 2,000 employees from in and around Wolverhampton moved with the factory to the Wirral and about 400 houses were built to accommodate the workforce and families. Some of the families walked the 70 plus miles to Ellesmere Port carrying their possessions with them. Imagine that today….!
To this day the area has street names such as Penn Gardens, Dudley Road, Stafford Road, and Compton Place.

Thanks for that great contribution BOG, bittersweet is just about spot on.
I can remember very well the shock Dad & I – along with just about everyone else – felt when the news came out. As I remember it Stan had been quite ill for several weeks and had been a little out of touch. The axe fell as he was recovering and getting back into the routine and so seemed doubly unfair. The board’s action seemed to me then – and still does to some extent – to justify Len Shackleton’s inclusion in his biography of a chapter headed “The average football director’s knowledge of football”. Apart from the heading the chapter consisted of a blank page. I was glad that Dad and I had the chance to thank him personally when we saw him in the circle at The Grand Theatre a short time afterwards.

It seems that Gareth Southgate sees a lot more in Conor Coady than a good proportion of Wolves fans.
Every centre back, with the possible exception of Van Dijk – although even he has shown he’s mortal recently – can struggle against big forwards with pace.
But not many can lead, read a game, ping a 40 yard pass and get picked regularly for the England squad.
And, yes Clive, I do know Virgil doesn’t qualify.
I think this West Ham side are looking frighteningly good though and I am expecting a really tough game and that we are most likely going to end up with ‘Nil Points’.
But I can’t bring myself to predict a defeat.
I think we should start with Traore and he should be given ‘Licence to bully’ all over the pitch.
If we have the same attitude as we did first half against Everton, we might just get something out of it.
As the Black Knight said in Monty Python and The Holy Grail:-

With the performance of Wolves being so inconsistant, it is difficult to predict. If it is the Wolves v Crystal Palace we will get slaughtered and if it is Wolves from the first half against Everton, we will win! The team must be changed from against CP, with Tarore and Donks coming.in. We usually don’t play great after an international break but we will see.
If Tarore is to leave us in January then he needs to be in the shop window, and to ensure we get 30 million. Won’t get that at the moment, but a couple of excellent games from him will have Klopp and others fighting for him. On his day (which is very rare) he can be a worldbeater. Currently very one dimentional!

62 years ago on Sunday I saw my beloved Wolves play for the first time. It was away to West Ham. We went 3-0 down and lost 3-2 with goals from Bobby Mason and Peter Broadbent. I will be there tomorrow looking for revenge! Wolves 3 West Ham 2 of course in memory of my idol!
Nervous about this fixture, particularly after the inept display against Palace.
With a tough Xmas period this could be a defining result in terms of where we really are in this league.

Much comment about the danger of Antonio up against Conor, but I’m not sure he’s had much success in the past so why so different this time.
Interesting that hammers fans have a similar opinion to us on Mr Mike Dean. They feel he’ll give them nothing. I suppose there’s some hope there then too.

You’re right about Antonio, he has an air of danger, but last couple of games, West Ham scored 3 and 4 goals but he didn’t score and seemed almost peripheral.
Saiss may be too liable to get carded or even sent off, but although Matcal is tough I think Ait Nouri’s skill gets him the vote. Keep Kilman on the left, bring back Boly. I don’t really see Dendonker as robust or nasty, more of a Dangerous Dave to me.
So, bring back Traore, with Hwang and Raul of course, and play 100% attack and let’s see.
Going back just two years, West Ham were relegation candidates under Pellegrino and our 2.0 victory should have been five. Remember the roar when Cutrone scored? So here we are now and West Ham are where we want to be (shaking the status quo at the top end of the league) and we are becalmed not knowing what sort of team we are or want to be. Previous comments have said it all, this is going to be a tough game , I want Boly and Traore back in the starting line up , I hate the idea of them being frozen out and traded in transfer business, I want our analysts to do their job and ensure all West Ham’s restart routines are covered so that we don’t concede from set pieces, I want us to give West Ham something to worry about. Hope we win but don’t expect it.
I think West Ham will win this game 3- 1 unfortunately.
As others have said, a difficult game to predict, there are too many variables for me to be sure about anything. Having said that, I don’t think it will be goalless. My guess is that there will be a number of goals, but in whose favour I have no idea. So I’m going for 3-1 to us, but would not be surprised if the reverse happened. So COYW, let’s give it our best and see what happens.

This is a tough one……..
The general consensus from above is that we’re in for a tough time tomorrow.. and I would definitely agree with that.
The ‘Ammers in third (equal 2nd) place cannot be argued with and Moyes has put together a talented squad with some key players…. with Antonio being the biggest threat.
That said ‘footballing’ teams offer us the chance to make for a good open game.
Ogbonna will be a miss for them so let’s hope that our front men can crate them problems too.
Always an interesting game with Mike Dean in charge.. which I dread will produce the usual chaotic refereeing decisions against us … but let’s see how it pans out…

No worries here. Billy Mitchell off Eastenders gonna get his arse smacked. Phil Mitchell will think there is some sort of drugs raid and Dot Cotton will realise there is a poltergeist apperition in Dr Leggs underpants as West Ham lose obviously by 3-0.
Really hard to pick this one. On form they should win. But we know we can beat them if we play to our potential. Fascinated to know what Boly did or said to piss Bruno off as he’s arguably been our best defender the past few seasons and might be the cool head we need out there for this game…

History is littered with promising starts and collapses in this league, so i’m going for a West ham wobble and hoping that Bruno has found an answer to our seeming inability to cope with high pressing and physical opposition.
A game that can certainly go either way. Predicting a draw. I agree with the team selection above. I think Traore should start and put in some storming runs.
I hope Bruno has had the team practising those free kicks from just outside the penalty area. I can see at least a couple with Soucek around.

With the ref/VAR line up we’ve no chance before we even start. West Ham this season are just too good, fair play to them but I can’t see us winning this as much as I’d like to.
I can’t predict a loss so I’m going for a draw.

Agree with most posters that this will be another severe examination of our top order credentials with more to follow. Tactics and shape will be important- 442 anybody?- but unless we win the battles and put in the hard yards we will be second best and on the end of a sound defeat. A lot rests on Raul and Hwang’s fitness after the International break. I have a theory that the top teams spend less time on how to nullify our threats than the so called lesser lights who relentlessly press and force errors. May work in our favour today. Hope springs eternal, as ever, so a narrow win for me. I am less concerned about Mike Dean than some- I agree he’s incompetent but unbiaised.
I’m not feeling confident for this one. It could end up being a really good game though. I think they’ll end up with the points unfortunately. Prove me wrong wolves come on
Really feel that we need Traore back on the field from the start today. For me, the most disappointing thing at Selhurst Park wasn’t so much how we ultimately got bullied by Palace, but our insipid performance up-front where we didn’t move the ball fast enough or create sufficient chances. Hoping there is a reaction today, so have gone for what might be an optimistic win.

For many seasons Wet Sham were dicing with relegation. Slight improvement until Moyes arrived and he certainly seems to have found something.
Despite many friends being fans, I’ve never warmed to them (OH is a Millwall fan so that may explain it and I live in SE London). Nevertheless they are a team to be reckoned with at the moment. Can’t see that changing much.
Hoping that Wolves put in a credible performance (especially as my nephew is back home, albeit briefly, from NYC for the 1st time since March 2020. He’ll be with his brother in the Steve Bull (and they won’t be allowed back if it’s a poor show from Wolves!)
Just watched “Code Red” on iplayer. Very emotional. So let’s have a goal from Raul.

Really interesting to see how this one goes, could define the rest of our season. I hope it all comes together and we manage a narrow victory, then build from there. Coady to boss it.

Rather a splendid victory today. 1-0 was the least we deserved. We were on the whole dominant and their keeper was a lot busier than ours. Great win. 19 points from the last 9. Cant be bad.
