As far as the end result goes, my glass is half full after another 90 minutes of frustration.
Struggling opposition? Check. Still hand them the initiative and offer little going forward? Check.
The first half was pitiful but oh so predictable. For a team that supposedly oozes technical quality in Neves, Moutinho, Neto et al, we could barely string two passes together.
Why can’t Nuno realise that a more progressive style from the off would boost our chances of taking the lead, and give him the ‘control’ he craved when first arriving at the Golden Palace?
Even in the second half when we saw more of the ball and played higher up the pitch, we struggled to create much from open play.
If your only chances are going to come from set pieces, which isn’t a ploy that’s going to get you very far, then Coady and Saiss have to bury those glorious opportunities. No excuses.
We’ve lost our identity and everything is disjointed. What is our style of play?
All I see is a midfield devoid of confidence to dictate a game, a number 9 that is anonymous, and a reliance on a boy wonder for inspiration.
And don’t get me started on the lack of options on the bench.
I think most of you will agree on a couple of things that need to happen in the summer. Commit to 4231, and sign a top-quality centre back, physical midfielder to support Neves (oh, how I miss big Alf N’Diaye) and an out and out 10.
And something you might not agree with – move on from Nuno.
I love the bloke for what he’s done for the Club. Nothing will ever take away from that. But I think we need to face facts and accept that for all the talk of a more progressive, possession-based style, Nuno’s defensive outlook on the game just doesn’t fit that ethos.
