An unexpected gift on Valentine’s Day is always an occurrence to swell the heart, particularly when it means so much to the love of your life.
To see Nuno embracing his coaching staff so affectionately on a cold, frigid south coast tells us that these three points were more precious than all the red roses in Sainsbury’s.

If anyone was in need of a loving present then it was Nuno, who benefitted from a questionable Bertrand handball gift to get us back in the game and another welcome one when Dendoncker appeared to handle shortly afterwards from way further out. But if it filled our leader’s heart with joy after the week he’s had, then we can be forgiven for not caring.
Following the midweek no-show against the same opponents, this win is of giant teddy bear proportions for the gaffer, who will cling to it with similar levels of tenderness for a longer time to come.
And while typically poker-faced in the post-match interview, Nuno would surely have been equally lifted by the second-half performance, which categorically proved that his players are still fighting and scrapping for the cause. It was as attractive on the eye as it was unexpected, with the first 45 minutes more akin to an apologetic bunch of wilting carnations from the 24-hour garage.
Against a side who had lost five on the spin before today, it looked like our effort levels were down at least 5% on our opponents; offering zero intent when in possession and a similar lack of endeavour without it – as typified by Semedo and Traore in the build-up before Danny Ings’ stunning volley.
“It is boring watching Wolves,” bemoaned Karen Carney at half time. Alan Shearer was pulling what little hair was beneath his flat cap too, for a lack of inclination to even participate, it seemed.
Nuno stared at the St Mary’s pitch in much the same way a jilted lover looks at the dinner table when the tea’s going cold as her old man loiters down the pub, and if he wasn’t similarly enraged in the changing room then I’d be amazed.
Ruben Neves typified this in a shocking first half, but pulled the strings majestically in the second, playing in Neto brilliantly for the winner after a slaloming Traore run, before the little magician cast his spell.
It was a goal worthy of winning any game and proof, were it needed, that the course of true love never did run smooth.
As you’ve said to me several times away from the blog mate, that 5% makes all the difference.
They just tried harder in the second half – simple as that.
Swapping Neto and Traore around improved things too so credit to Nuno for that, but why don’t we start every game with the intensity we did the second half today?
If we can get going more often, we’ve got the artillery to hurt teams. Traore and Neto got into so many dangerous positions once we got ahead, the only disappointment is we couldn’t fashion a third goal.
The Bertrand handball was perhaps harsh, but his arm is right out there blocking a goal-bound shot, no? And did the ball actually hit Dendoncker’s arm for their claim? Either way, I’ll take it.
Every single moment has felt like a struggle, but we’ve got 7 points from 3 games and with renewed confidence do we dare to believe we can climb? Play with the energy that won us this game and we’ll have a good chance.
I genuinely thought Nuno was done at halftime I just couldn’t see us getting back into it. That first half performance was empty, soulless and lack king any quality at all it all felt like the end was close.
Whatever the big man said at half time obviously got the lads fired up because it was a brilliant second half performance. Every man improved and grafted and actually looked like they wanted to win it. Neto and Adama were particular excellent when they swapped wings and that brought Jose into the game who linked it all together.
7 points from Arsenal, Leicester and Southampton is an excellent return and a real platform to kick on and finish this season strongly.
Well done lads and well done boss for getting that performance out of them, I didn’t think they had the fight to go and win that game in the second half but it proves they’re still fully behind Nuno and long may it continue.
8 points from the last 5 games including arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester, not too shabby .
In fact if we win the next two ( I know, I know) but against Leeds and Newcastle so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility, then we will have the same points as we did in our best ever premier league season after the same number of games !
We can still finish above Leeds, arsenal, villa and comfortably in the top ten.
Marcel and Johnny are both back now and bolt , podence not too far away.
Oh, hold on , I’ve just had a great idea
Let’s sack nuno and all his back room staff and give ourselves a real chance of relegation!!!!!!!!
Come on you wolves
‘Nuno stared at the St Mary’s pitch in much the same way a jilted lover looks at the dinner table when the tea’s going cold as her old man loiters down the pub’
Lol, love it Ben, made me chuckle out loud.
The mood swings of being a Wolves fan. FA cup nonshow, first half continues to confound and baffle us, to where our attacking team has gone, to a 2nd half more akin to what we were used to for the past 2 seasons. Will take any slice of luck ie the penalty, as it has happened to us in reverse, so that’s the law, love it or loath it.
Not going pick out any negatives, as let’s savour 3 points and a sublime goal. Target 4 points from Leeds & Newcastle and the world looks a bit nicer. Grind out results now until the end of the season. Regroup and go again.
Nuno got the tactics spot on for the 2nd half. I commented on a previous blog, he cut a forlorn figure, who had not slept for a week before half time. The relief of 3 points palpable at full time… The man cares. He is human. For me, keep him and ffs don’t sell Pedro.
There were discussions earlier in the season that maybe the slow first halves were intentional as Nuno sussed out the opposition and then fine-tuned our style for the second half.
After today’s display, I think we can put that theory to bed.
Now is the time to ask Nuno why he hasn’t figured out our slow starts for over two years.
It is unacceptable!
Anyway, this is why you never give up at half time.
We should now target Arsenal and Leeds and try to climb up the table even more.
Do you think we should sack Nuno Tim? You are seriously fucking hilarious ..
Why is that? Nuno is serving up horrible first halves and after the game said it wasn’t bad.
He has taken Wolves as far as he can with the funding available.
Not at all. The Jimenez injury ruined the season for Wolves. Nuno’s Wolves aren’t a fully matured team yet. Neto is brilliant even when his potential isn’t fully realized. Podence can also improve as he’s a freshman in a Wolves context. Fabio Silva: work in progress. Willian Jose just arrived. The main issue Nuno has to adress, is that competing in premier league with such a small squad is gambling. We need more alternatives in our central lines: defence, midfield, attack.
Disagree.
Lots of critics here.
Lets give Nuno a season with a full strength team – no injuries and potential signings,
Then see “how far” he can take us. Through this overly played, weird season, we are 3 wins off 5th place.
Besides, who would take over. No one worth noting.
He had a full season last year. If you want to be a 7th place team looking in at the top 6 all the time that is fine (I didn’t mind it, to be honest) but if you want to be like Leicester, then you have to take a risk and get a more offensive-minded coach who can get even more out of Neto and Traore. Jimenez has probably reached his peak.
Many people have noticed how we seem to have no mid-fielder who can pass to the CF. Why is that? We got Goncalves, Jordao, Shabani, Gibbs-White and Vitinha along with the other midfielders and not one of them seems to want to pass it to the striker. I guess that was all Cutrone’s fault though.
Also, Nuno was not disappointed in the first half of the game. Most fans were but not Nuno.
Lopetegui in!
Goncalves is top scorer in the porugese league :=))) Rafa Mir is shortlisted by Real Madrid after a fantastic season in the spanish top league :=))) What a waste!!!
From the graduate of the School For Stating The Bleedin’ Obvious.
I have to state the obvious when talking to you, younger and dumber and uglier brother.
By the way, there were plenty of people who were on this blog that were giving up on the game before it was even played so maybe it ain’t so bleedin’ obvious to everyone.
Great summary Ben .you just don’t know what your going to get with wolves these days .
But we’ll done today .I just couldn’t see where it was coming from lol.
Well done boys
Up the wolves
Thank you Keith! I reckon you might have heard my roars when Pedro scored! ?
I’m biased but thought both penalties were correct (under current rules) and became very bored listening to Shearer bleating on interminably about them. Scrap VAR and give the whistle back to the refs. And change the penalty rules back to take account of intent or lack of it.
In the end it was a very creditable performance but when is Nuno going to abandon his obsession with total containment only before the 40th minute; it could easily ave cost us dear again. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more contrasting performance before and after the break.
Seriously classy performances from Neto, Neves and Semedo keeps improving plus Jonny getting fitter.
So, lots to be happy about today, not least and 3 valuable points.
However,
I’m sure many will disagree but sorry I don’t think any of the above justifies Nuno’s ludicrous selection on Thursday after which the subsequent draw meant we might well have reached the semi final at least had Nuno done things differently.
And I think we might well still have won today.
PUB I understand your disappointment in Nuno’s attitude to the FA Cup. But will Southampton supporters agree if, unlikely I know but humour me, Southampton progress in the cup but are relegated. Think Wigan and where they are now.
I actually feel the same about the penalties and VAR and a return to the basis of intent. I also feel the same about Thursday’s team selection and an opportunity missed.
My only difference in consideration is we simply do not know what influenced his decision. Was it pressure from above, fear for his job or did he see something in the mental or physical make-up of the rested players.
Whatever, I guess we move on.
Pedro and Nuno brilliant great.
Bollocks to Alan Shearer.
Not welcome in the Penn Tandori.
He was only saying what we were saying about Kilman at Leicester away. Both decisions wrong but thankfully what goes around eventually came around.
He called us hopeless
Maybe I missed that bit but if he was talking at half time I think that some of us would have thought that he wasn’t far wrong.
Relieved as well as pleased for Nuno and the team. That will be a nice journey home, training will go well this week and Leeds will be taken on with more confidence. They leave big spaces at the back which we need to exploit , yes we need to start better and not concede but 30 points is a good milestone to hit. There is a bit of a points gap above us but at least this week we are looking at teams in midtable rather than at the bottom.
Delighted with that win .One day we will play 90 minutes like that .
Forward and onward to our mid table finish .
Just hope we can keep Neto for next season .Brilliant .
The saving grace, I think, is that no-one can afford Neto. Unless, of course, we get Mbape, Messi, Salah or Lewandowski in part exchange.
Indeed .I get the impression he is a big fan of Moutinho so I am hoping as long as he is there he will stay .Plus assuming they finish mid table with Jiminez back next season if not late this season he will be persuaded especially given his youth that at least another year could progress him and give him some joy in a full Molineux .
With a new box to box midfielder and another centre back we could be back in business towards the top .How great would that be for us all .
Well that was a game of two halves absolutely crab to being fantastic in the second half why we do that still do not know but a good three points. Ben I must be nearing the top of the table after another successful prediction haha.
71st. Just checked.
Having been critical of Patricio over the past few months and bemoaning the fact that he never keeps us in games, well today Patricio kept us in the game! He made important saves and even came beyond the six yard box to claim a cross. It must add confidence to the defence and team when you’re goalkeeper is on song – so well done to him.
I still can’t quite believe the difference in performance in the second half. We’ve had several VAR decisions go against us in the last 12 months so I’ll accept today’s penalty in a heartbeat.
Traore and Neto looked far more dangerous cutting inside on their natural foot and we looked reasonably comfortable in the closing stages of the game. We haven’t seen that much of Marcal but he does look instantly assured and sound so I hope we see more of him.
Just a final word on Neto. There aren’t many 20 year olds in Europe currently playing better or able to score goals like we saw today. That’s the good news – the bad news is that every major club in Europe will be looking at him. Let’s hope we can keep him!
Ernie Neto has just signed a 5 year contract till 2025 if somebody wants him say no or a 100mill plus your paying for the ability in the future .
Agreed on Neto, but the joker in the pack is Mendes.
Sorry D but if a Liverpool or Barcelona come calling for Neto, the agents create mischief and unrest particularly if the player concerned wants to be the best in the world and regardless of whether a new contract has been signed or not.
I would love him to continue his development with us though. I still have goosebumps looking at that goal today.
Stupoo I do agree with you on certain points but he’s a Wolves player who has already stated he wants to play at a higher level. Witch fans turned on him and said who does he think he is well we all know now how good he us. It is now up to Wolves to decide how far their going to go to get Wolves to the next level and european football regular or just settle for the money they might get.
This is the thing with buying someone like Neto when he does come good like he has like Jota the bigger clubs step in and they go which means from a football point of view we never get the real benefit out of this policy from a financial point yeah we get a shit load of money but that goes into the pockets of the agent and the owner who only reinvests a fraction of that money back into the club which means the team never really benifts/improves or goes on to the next level because the club constantly sells players when they come good.
Exactly right Paul and the only way you can break the cartel.is to do what Fosun originally said they would do which was to build steadily year on year with continued investment in the future AND THE PRESENT. That involves keeping your star players for at least 4 to 5 years or replacing like for like.
What has actually happened over the last 2 years is that buying “ones for the future” has been utilised as a camouflage for trying to do it on the cheap.
In Nuno’s era “loadsamoney” Wolves has actually been a cheapskate smoke and mirrors exercise where the NET SPEND since Nuno arrived has been around £200 million in 4 years; there must be several championship clubs who have spent more.
We should enjoy Neto while he’s here because Mendes will already have his plans in place to move him on.
Gullible downvoters welcome.
Spot on PJB .
Sorry I might be gullible PJB but you and Paul are naive.
By your own thinking the team is no stronger than when Fosun took over in the championship.
I guess the two of you might argue that but most wouldn’t.
When I was 17 I wanted a brand new sports car for my birthday. I had to wait several years before I had a regular and sustainable income to get that car.
It’s no use screaming I WANT at the top of your voice. That policy is the road to disaster. Ask any Leeds fan about it.
So then Prawny you think spending £55 million on Cuitrone and Silva while letting Jota go for £43 million was good recruitment do you? Don’t think we are the ones who are naive, but I know who isn’t and it’s Jorge Mendes.
It’s no use scapegoating Mendez for failures if you’re not going to give him credit for the successes which exceed the cases you mention.
I’ve said before the reason we are attracting these talented young players is the pathway we offer.
I may be wrong, it may be that Compton is a more desirable place to live than Porto or San Sebastian or maybe it’s the lure of the Kebabs from Chapel Ash?
They only come to us as a stepping stone. When They have proved there selfs there off to the so called bigger clubs.
They are using Wolves to get first team football something they wouldn’t get if they went to a big club first.
Which came first as they say ” the chicken or the egg ” These players know Neto knows if he comes good with us he can get a move no problem and won’t have to sit in the reserves until he gets a chance this way he can demand first team football.
That will be £135,000,000 then!
Not if the Jota giveaway is anything to go by.
Agree with every observation Ernie.
I’ve been critical of Rui this season too and I believe rightly so but if he plays like he did today he might just win me over again.
He took a great cross from a corner second half first time I can ever remember him coming off his line he leapt like the proverbial Sammon.
That’s been his weakness crosses..!
Pedro Neto. I`ve been banging his drum for the past year, and yet again today he demonstrated his enormous talent. Just twenty, and he`s already approaching world class.
The task for us now must surely be to find a way to hang on to him in the face of inevitable interest from the [supposed ] big Clubs. I believe that this can only be done if we very clearly demonstrate real intent to take the Club forward to become real contenders.
The start must surely be to strengthen the side with senior players of proven experience and worth. The policy of concentrating on ‘ Ones for tomorrow ‘ must be cast aside.
We are all fully aware of the areas of the team which need strengthening. So please Nuno, during the coming off season, make sure all available funds are used wisely to acquire proven quality, rather than wasting our cash on exercising the options to buy the likes of Vitinha and Nait. Guys of this ilk are simply not good enough for a team with real ambition.
Mr Shi, you`ve often spoken of Fosun`s grandiose ambitions. Well we`re coming to a pivotal time. Time to take action and to ” walk the walk “. What you do, or don`t do this summer will surely define both Fosun and you personally.
Now, now Mike. I do recall that in the early days you were highly critical of Neto until more than one blogger pointed out his very tender age. It was more than obvious that he was going to become a top player unlike another youngster who cost over three times as much.
You`re absolutely right — Big error, but that was long time ago. But the fact remains that if he stays and we are to get the best out of him, major strengthening of the team is needed.
Maybe Fabio has similar potential?
Well said Ernie. Neto was brilliant in the second half.
As Charles Dickens opened his classic novel, ‘A Tale of Two Cities’:-
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”.
Today, we brought that quote up to date and stood it on its head.
Truly ‘A Tale of Two Halves’.
The first half was simply the worst of times. But for Rui, we could have been three down at the break with the distinct possibility of shipping a shedload more.
Madame Guillotine beckoned and we looked doomed.
And then, in the second half, our own Sydney Carton appeared – in the shape of one Pedro Neto, and plucked us from the gallows with his selfless brilliance.
With a little help from a hugely improved performance by Adama, Ruben and the rest of the team.
And some good fortune along the way too.
And, for those of you who have been saying that Nuno is disinterested, and lost his enthusiasm for the fight, that emotional hug at the final whistle says pretty damn convincingly that his heart and soul is still with the pack.
A great result and a superb second half performance.
Sydney Carton’s final words were:-
“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known”.
They could have been written for Pedro.
Yes it was Mr Neto. And enjoy your rest tonight.
You deserve it!
Love the Dickens references. Well we’ve certainly had Hard Times, then Great Expectations, and like the poorhouse boy said; “More please Sir.
But happy endings take longer and are harder in the Prem than in Dickens! But that 2nd half display maybe showed the germs of a way forward. Neto & Adama on different sides allowing the wing backs space, and maybe after his settling in period Jose comes to the party! A different writer but All’s Well that Ends Well! We can only hope!
Nice one Allen.
“Bah Humbug!” To the doubters.
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends. Once more!”.
“God bless us every one.”
I think I’ll go for a lie down now.
Don’t recognize that last quote.
Does anyone know that backroom staff guy who was the recipient of a protracted Nuno bear hug ?
It appeared so heartfelt, that one can’t help but think that he may have played no small part in the second half revival.
I know him.
Julio Figueroa – in charge of coaching 1st team and TACTICS.
I’ve had my picture taken with him…
I can do you a deal on 10 prints…
Tempting offer, m’lud !
But can I get back to you on it ?
Only if I can photoshop you out Twixxy.
It was him who asked me ….. I just couldn’t refuse the guy …..
You are more famouser than Captain Kangaroo!
Relief and joy at 3 points. Neto and Traore for me the difference, & I thought the back 3 played well.
It’s certainly taking Jose time to adjust to our style of play, hope he’s got more to come, but so far I’m not at all convinced, he’s lumbering and doesn’t impose himself on the game at all.
Thought their Manager was pretty petty and truculent moaning about the Penalty. I thought the whole idea of the way not to give away penalties was to stand up, hands behind the back. Bertrand turned his back and stopped the ball going into the back of the net with his hand, Penalty. What the chuffing hell were Shearer & Mcoist going on about? But then I’m biased.
I know in my heart of hearts this is nowhere near vintage Wolves, but it was good to hear Neto after the game saying they were more aggressive & that’s going to be the way from now on. Great!
So let’s get another better performance v Leeds and bury all the recent angst! Up the Wolves!
I’m in a footy chat on WhatsApp with a few mates, it’s pretty much been muted since December. 7 points from 9 and now I’m thinking about rejoining the fray!
Hope Jose scores soon, the lad’s looking short of confidence. To be fair to him though, he wasn’t served up too many chances – creativity is currebtly our biggest problem. With Podence out, Fabio still a wee babby, and Traore yet to score or assist this season, we’re relying so heavily on Neto at the moment. If he picks up a knock we’re fucked, not surprised Nuno rested him for the cup.
What a goal from him though, right out the top drawer! Goal of the season candidate for sure, although that’s probably still going to Moutinho!
Also a joy to see Jonny play a full hour. Having him for the rest of the season will be such a boost.

Bang on.
Haven’t felt like this for some weeks. What a great feeling!
Good to see Traore putting in a meaningful shift , at least for the 2nd half.
Needs to do it consistently.
The big difference was that with Neto and Traore moving wings, and indeed floating inside regularly, they were able to manufacture much more space for themselves aswell as being able to cut inside on their favoured stronger foot. Both can be isolated on their ‘normal ‘ wings particularly when defenders double up on them.
More switching of wings ought now to be the order of the day especially as crosses are not so important without Raul because Jose clearly isn’t in his league despite being an upgrade on our other options.
So true mate, and who decided on them changing, Nuno of course. Brilliant decision .
Or possibly Julio Figueroa?
Lol. Yeah. But Nuno reacted to the problem.
First half he dint even bother closing them Dow strolled round the park……then again neither did anyone else but that is a bad habit of Adama does it a let in games does not help out with defending.
Looking at the league table it’s very hard to see how we could possibly have been dragged into a relegation scrap even before Nuno’s selection aberration on Thursday. And who is to say we wouldn’t have won this anyway – Southampton’s form is appalling, today is the first time they have lost 6 league matches in a row EVER (any division).
So how much more satisfying would it have been this evening sitting comfortably in mid table and looking forward to a 6th round cup tie against the mighty Bournemouth.
Life is about assessing the balance between risk and reward and on Thursday Nuno’s assessment was horribly wrong.
Totally agree with that .In reality getting to a semi final is very tough .This was a perfect opportunity and he blew it .For players we desperately want to keep like Neto you have. To give them such stages to show Their talent .Losing is ok .Not giving it your best shot is not .
How many goals do you think we would have scored Thursday with our best players?
More than none Tim and at least we could have rustled up a few penalty takers with the 20 minute subs. on.
Neither of us know but what I do know is that we would have attacked a team low in confidence with a lot more intent and had a decent chance of scoring .We may still have lost .As I have said that is ok it is not trying to win with a proper team which was totally wrong especially in this season which is now most likely to Peter out .
It seems he rested players who were either exhausted or risked injury if he had played them on Thursday. I was also very unhappy with the team selected, but it seems he had his reasons.
Or nuno could have played our 20 year old against possible advice from the medical staff of fatigue, got injured, still lost and he wouldn’t have been on the pitch last night to score!
Could have
Would have
Should have

So who to blame, eh?
We only scored two, and only got three points.
Still not good enough, it would appear, for some on here, still harping on about a past defeat.
Why doesn’t someone complain that Nuno didn’t hug everyone of his backroom boys as he did the first one?
It was a game of two halves.
Well, Duh, aren’t they all?
We did what we had to do, win the match.
Yes, the first half was bad, but as stated, it was a game of two halves and 95 minutes.
If we have helped Southampton to achieve a record, then they should be grateful, and stop complaining about a penalty, given within the rules of the game, at least the rules this week!
Not our problem that they are crap.
Been there, done that, read the book and got the friggin’ T shirt.
I do not care how we win all our remaining fixtures, just that we do.
As a wise old sage once said
FOwb
Bang on Clive. I also struggle with some fans views, but they are just opinions, of which we all have.
I am happy with Nuno fobbing off the cup. We wouldn’t win it and even if we did get to the final we wouldn’t be allowed to go. I am happy to take 3 points today.
Bring on Leeds
Call that a self imposed exile do you?
It’s not Clive. He’s not coming back for ages.
It’s Brian The Snail.
From Houston.
I thought that was Clive who said that.
Fact is we’ll never know and more than likely there’s a lot more that we haven’t heard about.
We have good players and a good manager, we’re on the verge of a fourth consecutive season in the Premier League . Not so long ago we were looking at Wigan, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bolton etc with a degree of envy. Some people need to see the bigger picture and be careful what they wish for.
Is that what some Leicester fans said?
Goodness, where to begin. Haven’t had much time to participate on the blog lately due to long work hours. Have to admit I slept through this one today (shame, sorry! ?), the game being on at 4am here, but woke up to the great news of a much needed 3 points.
I too was flummoxed and angry with the cup team selection mid-week, but what’s been done cannot be undone and the only way now is forward. We’re out of all cups, we’re in the lower part of the table, so what next?
I really think the team is somewhat bereft of belief at the moment, but if that can be restored, the players are there for Wolves to finish the season strongly. Thinking about it, Wolves always have a slumpy patch this time of the year, usually fixed by a dose of vitamin sea in Spain or Portugal to come back fully restored. This year, due to Covid, that hasn’t been possible. (Pity Fosun haven’t been able to whip out the company jet to whisk the team down to Marbella or somewhere for a training recharge.) Add on top of that the horrific injury to Raul and the rest of the injuries compounding, the mental challenges of Covid, the separation from families and friends, and the small nature of the squad … it’s hardly surprising Wolves find themselves challenged.
In my view, it’s times like these where you need the leadership to step up and guide the ship back on course. It’s times like these when the pack has to stick together: club, owners, coaches, players, fans – everyone, so to get through the hard times and progress the other end. It’s easy to say, well, we’re too good to go down, and we’ll just write this season off due to injuries and go again next season. But go again how? I think that’s a very dangerous line of thinking and the situation is much more complex.
I won’t pretend I have all the answers. None of us really know all the facts. But here are my thoughts:
To Fosun, I say stay true to your goals and chart a way to get there. Learn from mistakes. You have to look at your recruitment and find ways to get much better players in. Mendes has brought in some gems, but also some duds. You can’t rely on one source. Surely you need an improved scouting system. The recent record has been abysmal (no need to mention names and single out players, but many expensive mistakes were made). We couldn’t afford an extra $5M for Maitland Niles when Arsenal rejected the offered $15M and asked for $20M, but we could afford to blow $35M on Semedo? Time to reassess. Team needs proven players in the EPL to add to the existing team core. We can’t just rely on the potential of a youth system. A balance is needed.
I also say hang on to the main core of players. I get it that players will at times be sold on – it’s a business, I get it, and without the gate money atm, selling players for profit is one way to generate income. But the squad is still too small and developing. It’s still in a building stage and needs strengthening if the ambition is still to be a European powerhouse. We are miles away from that. Our bench is barely good enough for the EPL at the moment, so way too early to be selling the ones who are.
To Nuno I say LEAD! Inspire your players. Enough of the self-pity. The drama is getting old. So much at the club relies on him. He has done great things for the club for which everyone needs to be thankful and respectful. But the club revolves around him. Everything is set up around him. If he leaves, if he fails. the whole setup collapses (Patricio, Neves, Moutinho, Neto, … are all here because of him). So if he really is 100% committed to Wolves, restore the belief in players, and also learn from mistakes. Enough of the small squad nonsense. We all saw where that got us this year. To be a real European contender, to win trophies, we need much more than a handful who have to play their guts out week in, week out.
To the players I say BELIEVE! Each and every one of them needs to challenge themselves every game to play like they make all the difference to the team. Ability is there. They finished 7th in the EPL for two consecutive seasons out of their ability. No fluke – they did it! So dig deep, restore your pride and belief, and love your club.
To us fans I say, SUPPORT the team. Not sure how to do this necessarily, without being able to attend games, but now is not the time to call for heads. Just look at the Championship (and below) and you will see a graveyard of teams who till not too long ago enjoyed the accolades of premiership success. Birmingham, Charlton, Blackburn, and so many more, were teams we feared to play just a few years ago. And now? All hopelessly doomed. No hope of return unless investors like Fosun came along with a dream, and bought them. So be careful what you wish for when turning on Nuno or Fosun or the club. None of them owe us anything. We are fortunate to have this opportunity where an ambitious owner wants to invest to make our beloved Wolves successful. Don’t cut off the hand that feeds you, as the saying goes.
OK, to me I say time to get off the soap box and get back to work. Just want to see our team back on the path to success, like the rest of you here. Keep the faith! There is no reason why the long term picture needs to change. The future is still bright.
So come on Wanderers. Let’s keep up our winning ways!
Go Wolves!!!
Terrible first half no fight standing off giving the Saints all the time and space they wanted. For there goal Semendo and Adama just let Armstrong skip past them didn’t even make an attempt to tackle him then Dendonker stands five feet away from Armstrong doesn’t go to him to offer a challenge just sticks out a token leg shocking.
Same all over the park first half standing off them defending to deep. Don’t know what Nuno said to them at half time whatever it was he needs to say it from the off.
If it was for the penalty which by the way there player turned away from the ball and stuck his hand out at the same time Ally McCoist and Shearer said it wasn’t but from the view I sore the ball struck his hand pen…….end off.
Dendonker was different in fact it struck his shoulder but the replays only showed it f rom the one angle Hassledinker said it hit him on the elbow…….my arse they wouldn’t show the other angle from the dug out side they showed it at first but then conviently never played that angle again.
There were round pegs in square holes ie Dendonker he is not a defender in fact I don’t know what his best position is but its not in defence.
Great bit of skill from Neto how long will we be able to keep this guy God and the Board knows we need to keep him build a team round him but that will require major investment this summer.
There are still major problems that first half has been happening now for 18 months or more we got away with it today but on another day against a better team well doesn’t bare thinking about.
3 points closer to the magic 40 can we really really kick on from this or is this another false dawn of which there has been so so many this season……….we will find out against Leeds Saturday.
Playing Leeds two days running?
That will be interesting!!
Friday
Result says Southampton 1 Wolves 2. You dont get any points at half time. Controversial penalty decisions? Not bothered we have had more than our share go against us. Where as we were bottom of the VAR league last season, Southampton were near the top. Football Gods levelling up? FA cup game is gone. No point endlessly going on about it. Although at the time I was pissed off with the team Nuno put out, in hindsight you can see why he did it. Just lost Podence and Boly along with all the other injuries. 8 points from five games or 7 from three is a good return. No surprise with Jonny back and the return to a back 3. Which many fans called for. Still something great to look forward to. Relegating Sandwell Town on their own patch on May 1st. With 4 games to go that could be a realistic prospect. Nuno is our leader. Great win. FOWB and FWAW.
What a result….
No more than I predicted…!!
As cheesey has alluded to … points are only given at the end of 90 mins .. not 45.
I’ve said before .., we’re not as bad as one thinks…. and as for the bigger decisions today… 100% correct on both penalty challenges.
Ours … arm in an unnatural position, preventing a goal scoring opportunity..
Theirs…. arm in a natural position, no intent, didn’t prevent a goal scoring opportunity.
End of.
No singling out any players BUT thought Neves had a scintillating second half and took his penalty with calm and aplomb…
Oh … Pedro Neto…. our superstar….. well done ….
Thirty points on the board now and heading for another season in the PL…
What’s not to like…..
So many people moaning about the handball decision… no one batted an eyelid when Max Kilman got penalised with his hands at his side and a shot blasted at him from three yards … in comparison this was volleyball. The old haS beens always slither out when Its to criticise anything Wolves
One of the highlights of my day was listening to Ally Mccoist eat his words after constantly slagging us off while Southampton were playing well in the first half
Anyway F##k em all
Well done Wolves .. Pedro Rui ( outstanding ) Nuno Adama Ruben and all . Happy Valentines Wolves my real lifelong love of my life
Fowb
You should have seen the doom mongers on another forum whilst the game was on. Some of them so consumed in their own misery even arguing it wasn’t a penalty. Call them selves Wolves fans. F**king disgrace.
I know cheese. … we’ve got about 8000 of them that turn up when we’re doing well and moan and knock any confidence out of players until their self prophecy materialise s . Weird innit
Too right. And when I put stuff on here like this it is because the blokes I have been going down the Wolves with for decades are saying exactly the same thing. Right or wrong. This is what they say.
Hear hear mate. You know who has been on this blog a long time and then these new people arrive and I say welcome to the blog. Then I realise they are here because we are now in the Prem and doing great. Then we have a bad period and all of a sudden these people are slating the club. Unbelievable.
How the **** can you come out with ridiculous statements like that? Just because people are fairly new on the blog doesn’t mean they are not die hard fans of old. I am not here because we are in the Prem. I am here because I only found out about the blog in the last couple of years. For your information, I have been a regular supporter, home and away, since the mid sixties, and was there through the very thin times. I was even there, literally having to fight my corner, at The Den on New Year’s Day 1977.
Basically, I’m saying don’t tar everyone with the same brush.
Bar the odd infiltrator, everyone on here is a Wolves fan. It’s just that some are more blinkered than others and some are more objective than others. I like to think that I’m objective, but that’s just an opinion. Cheers. Rant over.
Dont worry about it Mit…….they have to vent there anger at at someone it we be someone else next week for not agreeing with them.
There are some who think only they and their little cliques are the only ones who have been there through the bad times; I’ve supported the club for 60 years most as a STH but I don’t harp on about the eighties etc. even though I attended just about every home match and many away during the 19 wideness years.
None of the above stops anyone having the right to have ambition for the club to be successful, specially when the owners have made some very grand promises.
So to those of you who readily accept mediocrity or worse as the norm get on with it, we don’t all have to share your limited ambitions. It doesn’t make us any less loyal than you think yo are.
And btw. my son is one of your so called “8,000” because he lives 200 miles away and when he can come can rarely get a ticket.
I think you got the wrong end of the stick mate , so for that apologies. I wasn’t referring to peoplelike yourself or most of the people on here as such , iwas talking about the people who turn up at the Mol and just moan and boo
Now people can’t get in and we haven’t been playing g as well they’re on other forums during the games constantly slagging Wolves off .
I was not referring to yourself people on here . Sorry if you thought that I was
Thing is chaps … when we were on our knees… chorley Bhattis … That lowest attendance when Tommy Docherty said he’d buy us all a ticket if we ever got to Wembley sgain … can’t even remember who we were playing .. thing is , if I’d looked over my shoulder then I reckon I would have seen most of you lot.
Up the Wolves !
Yeah but it’s not acceptable that you were at Chorley. Or in League 1. Or actually support the team. Apparently we are ‘happy clappers’ which is ironic being that the 14000 ‘fans’ came along when we were winning every week in the championship came along to clap along happily. First sign of a few bad results and the misery begins.
I think it’s called ‘human nature’. Where I used to work, if you found yourself in a real shit situation at 5pm and we’re looking for help, half the staff would step forward and ask what could they do, the other half put their coats on and left for home without a second thought. It’s no different with our fans. I know who I would want to be with if it really hit the fan and you would be one of them. Back to the game- love it when we come back from the dead and ram the so called pundits criticisms back at them. Never patronise the wounded wolf.
Why do you have to label everyone.
A wolves supporter is a Wolves supporter.
Cheeseter,
I think that where we are as a nation…probably most people struggling mentally. Weather crap, everything extremely flat not unlike Cyril the linedancing hedgehog .
It has an effect on the way we experience things that are supposed to lift our mood and be enjoyable…its probably why a lot of us overreact. Two days later…doesn’t seem quite so bad.
We’re all struggling somewhat. ‘There endeth the word for the day ‘

Ally McCoist was really annoying with his continuous bleating on about how good Southampton were in the first half, and how pleased he was with their wonderful first goal.
Talk about a game off 2 halves, first was watching them in the bathi era, second half pressed them, higher up, the hug nuno gave to his staff made me nearly crie, people say he does not care, beat Leeds Friday 10 out off 12 not bad, best part off game, gibbs white never went on the pitch, time to get more drunk , let’s all have a virtual disco, wolves aie we.
Hello Lord Twix
Well what can I say?
As we messaged at half time “last season we were 2 down at the same venue then…..”
However I could not see this coming despite our “win 2-1” optimistic forecast for the second period.
The turnaround was unbelievable but it means MOTD will be on tonight.
Will phone just before we play Leeds.
All the best to you both.
BOG
Good one Mike…..
Your story lines and anecdotes are worthy of inclusion in the National Press….
The Sporting Star line bought back many memories…
Stay safe in Bedford mate…
There was no change in mindset between the two halves. It came down to tactics, pure and simple.
First half Neto was well marshalled and mostly running down blind alleys. Traore was cutting wide and running to the byline, sticking in a cross to …… mostly nobody.
Second half both Neto and Traore were given more freedom to roam. Neto looks more dangerous on the right but this begs the question what to do with Traore?
The answer is let him run inside where with more space he can scare the bejesus out of even more defenders and midfielders.
It worked a treat today.
My worry is it won’t always work and when it doesn’t who is on the bench to give us new options?
There was no one on the bench today that could offer any improvement on the team.
Granted we still have Raul and Podence to come back but we will always have injuries – and hopefully more European/cup games so I think this small squad idea may need rethinking.
Without a deeper squad we will continue to be hit and miss as we are now.
We’re grinding out the odd result whilst using up our luck bank but we’re running on empty and it’s showing.
“I don’t agree that the first half was disappointing. It was a tough game. Southampton are a good team.” – Nuno

I didn’t know Matt Lucas supported Southampton!
I’m certainly not a technophobe. Without modern technology we wouldn’t have this excellent blog and I don’t think there would be many wishing to speak out against the goal decision equipment which has done a wonderful job in removing the doubt from what, after all, is the whole object of the game we love. But this weekend has revealed for the umpteenth time the whole problem with VAR. This abomination was intended, like the goal equipment, to avoid unfairness and eliminate doubt. Unlike said equipment it has failed completely to do either. It can tell to within a hairsbreadth whether a player is offside – or at least it would do if it could be sure when the, normally out of shot, ball was kicked which it can’t. At 25 frames per second it’s never going to be obvious which frame to select as the canvas on which to draw the infernal lines. On another aspect, pundits, who used to delight in airing their views on whether penalties should have been given, now find themselves engaging in discussions about whether VAR was right to award/not award a penalty. In either case the discussions only proving that if you laid all the pundits in the world end to end they still wouldn’t reach a conclusion. And how many times do we see wrong decisions being made only to hear that ‘VAR don’t check for that’.
So please can we get back to the days before the vandals in charge of the game turned a sometimes unsatisfactory system into one which week after week and game after game seems designed specifically to cause unfairness, aggravation and outrage. Back, in other words, to the days when it was all down to the man with the whistle, a human who sometimes, like all of us, got it wrong, but was doing his best. VAR has spectacularly failed to improve on this often maligned system. End of rant!! 🙂
What a great result, what a well taken penalty and what a superb goal from our Pedro, all understated by MOTD2 as we have come to expect. Let’s hope it settles everyone’s nerves so that they can settle down to play the thrilling football we know they are capable of while making steady progress upwards in the table.

We have had more than our fair share of shocking VAR decisions, Pedro’s heel, Jonny’s wrist etc ruling out what we all thought were legitimate goals. I don’t want to win or lose games on VAR decisions. Before the pandemic I was hopeful of achieving a lifetime ambition by taking my grandson to Molineux. I postponed that purely for the fact that I could not cope with the situation of a Wolves goal being scored, enjoying the eruption of bedlam around us but then VAR ruling it out and 30000 people chanting F*** VAR. How do I explain that to a five year old and tell him not to repeat that to his mother.?
The pandemic and the lock out of Molineux has caused me to reflect. VAR is applying the rules to the letter and it’s not what we want but the rules are the problem and how they are being applied. It’s a bit like blaming the Police when you get a speeding ticket.
Jazzwolf
Would just like to add support to your point on the offside and 25 frames per second issue; it may be water under the bridge etc. but going back just over a year I made the same point when Neto’s goal against Liverpool was disallowed. It took Stockley Park about five minutes to find a frame where Jonny’s toe was “offside”. To me it was “clear and obvious” exactly what was going on. The other classic example with us was the 8 minutes it took VAR to give Man. City a penalty at Molineux last season. How can clear and obvious take 8 minutes.
It;s not just us who suffers. Week in week out we watch incidents involving the 2 red teams from opposite ends of The Ship Canal where they are played over and over until the frame or angle which favours them appears.
To say VAR and Stockley Park are open to abuse is the understatement of the century.

Says it much better than I can
Excellent article. Thank you for posting it Bilbrook. I had never heard of it before but I have read some of Michael petalengro’s posts before on the now defunct (I think?) south bank resistance. He has a real eloquence in his work and seems to effortlessly combine a gritty down to earth realism of life as a wolves fan with a poetry and philosophy that somehow elevates what he writes to a higher plane…….and he doesn’t like Sandwell which is always the mark of a decent human being.
Thank you for bringing that to my attention Bilbrook. Just one word to describe it. Inspirational!
That’s brilliant. Well said Michael.
Like every Wolves fan I am overjoyed with the win and as usual baffled by the two halves difference in the team. Surely that is NOT a recognised tactic anywhere (luring them into a false sense of security is definitely not in any coaches book). And it cannot be Nuno’s inspiring speech at halftime that makes all that difference – otherwise I am sure he would have switched on by now and gave the same speech before the game started.
The only worry I have about the second half is the lack of service to our CF. I know he is new and possibly the rest of the team seem to think that it was the same forward line from the last game. Jose seems to hold up the ball well but at the moment seems to be lacking opportunity to have a go at goal himself. I just hope the rest of the team show a bit more faith in him.
Nice to see Marcal back. He is a good sub for Jonny at the moment (at least until Jonny can last the full 90 minutes). But we certainly cannot afford an injuries up front as the replacements are well below what is required (although I would love to see Carboneu at some stage for 10 mins or so – when we are 3 goals to the good).
I have been thinking about our first half performances vs our second half performances for quite some time now. I used to play a lot of cricket in my younger years and was an opening batsman and here’s the analogy I would draw. If you go out to bat with preservation of your wicket as your dominant mindset you can grind down the opposition and eventually get on top and batting becomes easier. However, it can also allow the bowler to feel he is dominating and get into a rhythm and with one small mistake or error of judgement you get out and it then becomes harder for the next batsmen to get on top of the bowling because they are now buoyed with confidence. Conversely, if you go out with the intention of dominating the bowler, the bowler can feel under pressure . He will start moving away from his bowling plan to try and control you and runs can flow very easily. Of course, there is always the risk of throwing your wicket away in attempting to dominate. So, both methods have their pros and cons but on the whole, I think you win more games and win more comfortably by going out with the mindset to dominate. I think Nuno’s natural tendency if he were a batsman would be to adopt a more cautious approach. I think he is trying to become more adventurous but is struggling as it doesn’t come naturally to him. He is more Geoff boycott than viv Richards.
Well, I forecast 1-1 but thrilled to be wrong. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t been said so eloquently above. I must admit I feared for us when that superb Danny Ings goal went in. We looked awful and deserved to be at least 1-0 down. The St Valentine’s Day Massacre was a newspaper headline that sprung to mind, but that was just the drama queen in me coming out!
For the life of me I cannot understand the psychological barrier in our often dire first half performances.generally. It’s not just this season either. Maybe time to call the shrinks in! Whatever. Luck was with us in the second half but the old saying about making your own luck is so true. So often we have been on the wrong end of decisions, and the stats bear me out, even placing us as the most sinned against.
The switching of wings by Traore and Neto after 45 minutes looked either like an act of desperation by Nuno to a masterstroke. I particularly cheered our fleet-footed wing men cutting inside, leading directly to our two goals. Neto surely scored our goal of the month or even of the season. I’ve despaired recently of the sheer number of crosses that come to nothing, in the absence of Raul, and it was a blessing in disguise yesterday that our wingmen went the direct routs instead. Once Jose is more adjusted to the faster speed in the PL, he will be more able to emulate Raul.
I think there is a serious anomaly with VAR. If the referee blows for a minor to moderate foul in the box, there is only a small chance of VAR overturning it, on the basis of a clear and obvious error. However, if that same category of foul is committed, but the referee doesn’t blow for it, there is very little chance of VAR awarding a penalty,. Why? If the fouls are of equal stature, a penalty is a penalty. But, it’s not, it all depends if the referee blows for it. This helped us yesterday with the two handball incidents. And, just look at the Patrick Bamford incident against Arsenal yesterday when he was the meat in the sandwich without an Arsenal player even touching the ball. A penalty all day long if blown for, but not something VAR would award if the referee didn’t blow for it
Agreed Dances. PB put the, ball through between them only to be fouled by both of them when neither were within feet of the ball. It’s totally unjustifiable for VAR to be powerless to intervene because the ref – possibly unsighted – didn’t blow for something like this.
Have just struggled with predictive text to put ‘unsighted’. It kept turning it into ‘unsightly’ which even I think is a little unfair, even though not many refs would probably claim to be oil paintings!! 🙂
Glad you agree. I was outraged on Bamford’s behalf. That was actually more than the minor to moderate foul used in my analogy. It was a stonewall penalty, all day long. Bamford was taken out. The ref must have been unsighted and VAR must have been asleep, unless it was just favouritism to a perceived ‘big club’ like Arsenal… And, where was the linesman?
At half-time I was looking forward to 3 points in the prediction league. At full time I was glad and surprised that Wolves had the 3 points rather than me. Talk about a Jekyll and Hyde performance – that one is up there with some of the worst/best.
Noticeable that teams are now not just doubling up on Traore but also on Neto. They can afford to station midfielders out wide to do this job because they know that our 2 central midfielder are not ball-carriers. Which highlights once again the need for an attacking midfielder who can drive at the defence with the ball – a bit like Armstrong does so succesfully for Soton (Greasel for the Vile etc). To an extent Traore filled this role yesterday, and looked much more effective than in the 1st half. Maybe its an experiment we should continue with.
Despair to delight in ninety minutes.
First half, Southampton pressed us mercilessly. As soon as the ball reached an OldGold shirt, he had two or three snapping at him, rushing the pass, frustrating our attempts to gain any sort of rhythm or momentum.
But I’ve always thought that no team can keep that up for ninety minutes and second half our boys found so much more time and space to operate. And boy, didn’t they use it well. Not only did Adama and Pedro switch sides, they also played closer to Willian, leaving the wings clearer for Jonny and Semedo and putting more pressure on the centre of Southampton’s defence.
Pedro’s goal was a peach and had me leaping from the sofa and frightening the poor cat half to death.
Much discussion of VAR, especially amongst Saints fans I would imagine.
For me, given the rules as I understand them currently, which I must admit is hardly at all, they were both penalties and should have been given as such. The reason they weren’t is because VAR doesn’t like to overrule the ref on the pitch, either way, so his initial decisions stood.
The point is though, VAR was bought in to give correct decisions and take away the controversy. In view of the fact it is obviously not doing that it should be scrapped forthwith and we can all get back to celebrating a goal when it’s scored and not some minutes later when they all line up to kick off again. It is, in short, absolute shite(sorry ladies, I feel very strongly about it).
You are hereby villified and exiled for using a swear word.
Interesting, it is only my dear son who gets bitched at for the occassional risque word., not anyone else.
Not fair.
I told him to pick up his ball and come home.
Hello Clive’s mum. Is your son freezing his nuts off over there?
Yes he is, big Babby.
No water or internet or tv for three days, and power went off in the middle of the night, but came back on four hours later.
Him and Mrs CFH have learnded how to spake to each other agin, stead of playin’ with eye fones
Tell ya what though, Wish I could link back to my comment exactly on the Game Preview.
Believe Fickle was the term.
Yes I know we will never know what might have happened if Nuno had picked a full strength team on Thursday,,,,but my point then was if we had to choose lets prioritize Sunday, I’m back from the Naughty Step feeling vindicated>Especially after reading Saints’ fans’ letters wishing they were weren’t playing Bournemouth and bemoaning their collapse.
I believe our second half performance was as much to do with Saints running out of steam…as it was to repositioning of Neto Traore etc
I also believe that Nuno knows what he is doing.
Our season started with a bang vs the Blades and since then its been ragged. But as the injuries get repaired and the squad gets more on the same wavelength I’m optimistic that the last dozen or so games will deliver 20 or more points and we will have serious momentum going into next year.
Been saying this for a while…
Then lets clear underperformers out and sign a serious ball carrying midfielder. and have a plan for life after Moutinho. If Raul recovers fully then great, wonderful even , otherwise we need to secure the next best thing this summer…
(And our win on May 1st will send Sandwell down)
Regarding the midfielder you mention Marin, I feel that Otasowie could well fit that bill.
I would not attempt to justify the change in performance between first and second half as a pre determined strategy BUT.
Whilst the pressing technique employed by most teams now is pretty terrifying for the first half-hour, few of these teams have the energy to maintain it for the whole game.
Chelsea (home) Arsenal (home) Soton (away) are decent examples of teams we have plucked in the latter stages. Leicester (home) Chelsea (away) were close to being taken.
We are still rather unique in our deep-play pressing and I don’t know if this is the preferred way forward for Nuno. But likewise I’m not convinced that all teams who want to apply the trendy pressing game have fully grasped the implications of playing our style Mr Hassenflackentootenwhistle certainly seemed a little bemused.
There is a picture of Nuno on the BBC football site after Saints v Wolves. With a beaming smile. Which suggests to me contrary to the conspiracy theories : 1. There is no mental health issue 2. He is not being censored by the Chinese Communist party 3. He is committed 4. When he says he is happy with solutions eg Willan he means it 5. He is happy at Wolves. Alternative scenario he has guarded digs at the owners and shows frustration. None of which is apparent. So onwards and upwards. I predict we finish somewhere between 45 and 52 points. And fully expect to be reminded of that if it all goes tits up. And if I offended anyone with my posts yesterday (PJB, Paul AD 67 and Mit) I apologise. Early kick off. Early beers. Foolishly wound up by antics on OTHER forums. I need to ignore it. Soz. FWAW.
Don’t lose your passion Cheese, prefer strong mature bite, rather than a dairy lea triangle response.
Cheers mate. Appreciate your comments.
Lose his passion?
He’s got more chance of regaining his virginity!
It was Brompton’s comments that irked me, Cheese, not yours. I’ve learnt to take yours with a pinch of salt, particularly if they’ve been made after the watershed. Apologies for any future misdemeanors accepted.
Cheese we are all in it togethe. I have no problem with your Blogs because like me you are passionate about Wolves…..I don’t always agree with your view but do enjoy reading them.
Does anyone know if Stu is ok? Not seen him on here for some time.
Ped ant, was thinking the same, his comments are very insightful and missed. Hope you are OK Stu?
Perhaps still sobering up following the rugby?!
I think he’s OK.
Still posting things on Facebook.
Stu and Jen both ok
Just had texts from him
Thought Southampton were a good team????
