It’s the International break. The Transfer Window has closed. There’s not much going on Clubwise.
So let’s take a few moments to celebrate a couple of encouraging England performances.
And the performances of two players in particular.
One we all love to love. And one we all love to hate.
We all know Captain Fantastic. Elton John even named one of his classic albums after him.
After an all too long wait, Conor Coady was given his chance a couple of games ago and grabbed it with both hands with his customary enthusiasm, defensive nous – and renowned goalscoring skill.
To score, and be made captain, in only your second representative match is something that I can’t remember happening before and I’m sure won’t be repeated too often.
In the two games he’s played, Conor has gone from, not wanted due to Southgate’s preferred back four, to fitting into the new back three formation which Gareth seems to be starting to favour. Mere coincidence? You decide.
And his natural leadership qualities are there for all to see. Who needs a full stadium when you’ve got Conor dishing out the decibels?
And you can’t help but love the bloke.I hope that Coady will become a mainstay of the England side for years to come.
Now to the other player I wish to talk about. The nickname, The Brown Dirt Cowboy suits him well I think, because he always seems to spend a lot of time rolling around in the mud, and his lifestyle, at times, leaves a lot to be desired.
It pains me to say it and I might well get some stick from some fellow bloggers but – if you ignore the histrionics, the VERY annoying haircut, the silly rolled down socks and calves like tree trunks… there is an excellent footballer hidden underneath.
He has the ability to control the pace of a game, pick a pass, draw a foul – and score goals. He is the nearest thing to Gazza that I’ve seen, and the England team look a load better when he’s in it.
There. I’ve said it.
I’m going for a lie down in a darkened room now, after having washed my mouth out with soap and water.
But, putting all tribal loyalties and rivalries aside, perhaps we should just celebrate that clubs from the West Midlands can produce two such diverse, and skilful players who can light up our National team.
