Mick McCarthy has made his feelings perfectly clear about ‘heroic failures’, which is just as well because I think we’ve all had our fill.

Just win.

However you need to do it, whatever it takes – just win.

Not this time mate

I don’t care that we were thwarted by decisions against Stoke and Chelsea. I don’t care that we probably deserved more against Villa.

Whatever the excuse is, there seems to be just one consistency – Wolves losing.

And if we’re not losing, we certainly aren’t winning. Yes, there’s a lot to be said for grinding out valuable points, but we need to register a maximum sooner rather than later or we’ll be deep, deep in the brown stuff.

I don’t think you could ever describe a Liverpool visit to Molineux as a home-banker, but we’ve certainly been given every advantage possible to get the job done tomorrow night.

Best player ruled out – check.

Three games in a week – check.

Lost as many games as they’ve won away from Anfield – check.

The Team

If Mick McCarthy doesn’t go 4-5-1 in this game and we lose it, I think his head should be firmly on the chopping block.

We employed the shape perfectly against Villa and but for sloppy mistakes, wonder goals and silly behaviour, we probably would have taken a point at the very least.

Yes, Henry is suspended, but it should just be Milijas or Jonnson in and as you were.

So, that’s a team of:

Hennessey, Foley, Berra, Johnson, Ward, Milijas, Frimpong, Edwards, Kightly, Jarvis, Fletcher

If we go 442 and start slinging balls forward for strikers to chase, I might just lose the will to live.

I’m all for positivity, but after the signs of progress in that first half against Villa, I’d hate to see that immediately undone simply because Karl Henry got himself sent off.

Prediction League

8 people correctly predicted doom against our claret and blue neighbours last weekend, but none got the scoreline.

So it’s a single point each for josh, Jed, Haywood Wolf, robin, Clive from Houston, The Wanderer, garby and Stourbridge Wolf.

I think we’ll take 4 points from the next three matches against Liverpool, QPR and WBA.

So lets go for a defeat in this one, leaving me a draw and a win to play with in the other two.

2-1 Liverpool.

If you’re at Molineux tomorrow, get right behind the lads as you always do. It’s a special atmosphere under the floodlights so hopefully the team will respond.

Up The Wolves.

* An apology to Martin who also correctly predicted the outcome of the Villa match and was rudely overlooked as I totted up the scores. If you spot an error or see that I haven’t awarded you the points you deserve in the Prediction League, please do get in touch.

If there’s one sure-fire way to wind up Mick McCarthy in an instant, simply tell him his team are a bunch of ‘heroic failures.’

He hates it apparently.

Not half as much as Wolves fans hate him picking the wrong team once again by ignoring Adlene Guedioura for yet another week.

So we’re all pretty hacked off that we were heroic failures in a narrow defeat at Anfield then?

We wish it was Fletch, but great finish all the same!

One hundred million pounds worth of Dalglish signings should consign the very notion of ‘regret’ to the dustbin, particularly when playing on their own patch in front of 40,000 supporters.

But that’s the overriding emotion that every right minded fan who saw us thump Millwall 5-0 must be feeling, when they’ve seen a meagre 10 minutes from the Algerian and none whatsoever from Adam Hammill.

Mick even admitted Dave Edwards wasn’t fit afterwards, saying: “Maybe he needed a bit more because he’s terrific in that position when he’s fully fit.’

So why play him when every single one of us inside Molineux on Tuesday night wouldn’t have?

When supporting a club that smugly pats itself on the back for a lack of summer investment, the prospect of defeat is regularly acknowledged beforehand, such are the levels of on-field aspiration.

Such is life in the Premier League.

So when the manager proceeds to pick a team that immediately stood less chance of winning than picking other options available to him, the increasing monotony of failure sticks in the craw – no matter how bloody heroic it is.

The levels of despondency really should not escalate too much after this loss but for some perverse reason mine are sky high, even as I recall our magical Fulham showing only a few weeks ago.

The reason? That a bottom six finish is most probably the best we should realistically expect, just like we’ve been told to expect for the previous two years.

Defeat hurts, no matter who it is against. It has ruined another weekend, has consigned MOTD to the dustbin and will now act as a precursor for seven days of meaningless E & S platitudes ahead of the next match, as we are all told about ‘improvement’, ‘hard luck’ and ‘togetherness.’

And all the while, us obsessive, congenital fanatics will hang on every word, before Jez Moxey slags us off for watching it in the local bowling club instead of forking out £42 for the privilege.

That’s showbiz folks.

As for our latest defeat…

…It was a game of two halves! Showed nothing in the first 45 minutes, although extremely unlucky to concede the opener when Johnson was clearly fouled by Carroll in the build-up to Adam’s shot that went in off Johnson.

Before that we had started brightly enough, although ref Kevin Friend was hellbent on booking any Wolves player who dared breath in the vicinity of a red shirt.

The outstanding Suarez –who I was relieved to come off – bagged a beauty of a second, even if Hennessey shouldn’t have made a near post effort find the back of the net so easily.

The second half was miles better following the introduction of Fletcher and he gave us all hope with a rasping finish that looks increasingly beyond Doyle.

Doyle then chose the wrong option when a simple cut back would have surely provided Fletcher with his second shortly afterwards as we enjoyed 15 minutes of dominance.

But even during that period, Carroll hit the post and Downing was put clean through only for Wayne to rescue us.

They had other chances too, although Doherty looked really encouraging off the bench as a replacement for Stearman.

Would we have lost if Mick had have chosen differently?

Possibly not.

Is defeat genuinely driving him, Moxey and Jez Morgan to searing levels of distraction and irritation like it is me right now?

I bloody well hope so.

If there was a team who suffered a more painful defeat than Wolves last weekend, it was probably Liverpool.

Kenny Dalglish’s side went down 4-0 at Spurs after seeing two players – Charlie Adam and Martin Skrtel – dismissed for a couple of reckless tackles apiece.

Last Christmas. Stephen Ward my Lord.

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, both of them are back tomorrow having served their one game suspensions in the midweek Carling Cup win at Brighton.

Steven Gerrard also made his long-awaited return to action, so it’s conceivable he could have a role to play in this one too.

Thus far at Anfield, Liverpool have drawn with Sunderland and annihilated Bolton in what was an encouraging start before back-to-back defeats against Stoke and Tottenham derailed their progress.

They’ll be desperate for the win in this one and I’m expecting them to come out of the traps flying. Hopefully Wolves are equally prepared for this.

Over the last few years, we’ve generally done a decent job of setting our stall out against the top teams away from home and at least giving ourselves a chance of getting a result. That’s the minimum requirement for me.

The Team

It said on the official site yesterday that Fletcher is back in training, which presents Mick with an interesting conundrum. Does he throw the Scot back in at the deep end and maintain a 442 or keep him on the bench and play 451? I think he’ll go for that latter, so this is my predicted lineup.

Hennessey, Stearman, Berra, Johnson, Ward, Henry, O'Hara, Guedioura, Jarvis, Hunt, Doyle

So that’s Ward reverting to left-back, Guedioura and Hunt brought into the team to make a 451, leaving Doyle to play up front on his own. Johnson will hopefully have recovered adequately to take his place in defence.

Hammill and Milijas are two other players who must be pushing hard for a start, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them given a game. However, both of them seem to have been largely overlooked by Mick, which is a shame because I think they’re worthy of a sustained run in the side.

Prediction League

Only two people predicted we’d lose to QPR last weekend, but not even they believed we’d get stuffed 3-0. Still, a point apiece goes to Ben and Kowloon Wolf. Well done lads.

Thanks to everyone for making the job of updating the table an easy one this week.

I think we’ll lose this one.

Back-to-back wins at Anfield is surely the stuff of dreams isn’t it?

Liverpool have a lot of creativity in that side now and I’m expecting the likes of Suarez, Downing and Adam will cause us grief.

3-1 to the scousers.

I do think we’re capable of going there and getting a result, providing Mick gets it right with the tactics and the lads play to their potential. They’re still vulnerable at the back in my eyes, so hopefully we can stay in the game long enough to ask a few questions of our own.

If you’re going to Anfield tomorrow, have a great day out and get behind the lads.

Up The Wolves.

This week, we welcome Mike from The Anfield Opinion to the Wolves Blog Guest House ahead of our match against Liverpool on Saturday.

Liverpool conceded 4 last time out

Thomas: Mike, after what seemed like a solid start to the season, you’ve suffered two disappointing losses. Do you still remain confident of a successful season?

Mike: Both defeats were certainly disappointing given our strong start to the season, but Liverpool put in very different performances in the defeats. Against Stoke the Reds created lots of chances and controlled possession, with only a quick breakaway and a mistake by Carragher affording Stoke the penalty which got them the win.

Against Spurs however Liverpool were incredibly poor, with the central partnership of Henderson, Adam and Lucas leaving Martin Skrtel exposed against the prolific Gareth Bale. Whilst Kenny tried to re-organise after the first goal, the Adam sending off was the beginning of the end for the Reds.

However I’m still incredibly optimistic about the season, it’s a squad which is still finding its feet after a considerable influx of players in the summer, and once the system is tweaked I’m sure Liverpool can mount a challenge for a Champions League place.

Thomas: Yes, you’ve seen a lot of new faces arrive over the summer. Which has impressed you most thus far?

Mike: I think Downing has to be considered the most impressive. When he was signed for £20 million in the summer a number of heads were turned, with many saying the fee was too high, but in Downing Liverpool have a player who can play either on the left, in the middle or out on the right with relative comfort, with the width and creativity he adds being much needed in a squad that has lacked both in recent years.

Thomas: Yep, I’d agree with that. Downing is a player I rate very highly. What constitutes success for Liverpool this season?

Mike: Every Liverpool supporter will tell you that the club exist to win trophies and the only thing that constitutes a successful season is winning the league. But being realistic, a Champions League place would constitute a great campaign for the club, and if there’s a domestic cup win in there that would certainly be a bonus.

Thomas: Would you still say Steven Gerrard is your most important player or has Luis Suarez taken over that particular mantle?

Mike: Being the club captain and a season veteran, it would be easy to consider Gerrard to be Liverpool’s most important player. His role has changed this season though, and although he is still important, Liverpool no longer have such a dependence on him now the likes of Downing, Henderson and Adam have arrived and Lucas has shown considerable improvement.

Suarez is certainly a fan favourite, and given his age and immediate connection with the fans he certainly has the potential to be a future Liverpool captain, though that’s some way in the future.

Wolves are aiming for back-to-back wins at Anfield

Thomas: What did you make of the two matches between Wolves and Liverpool last season?

Mike: Wolves’ win at Anfield was the final straw for many fans, including myself, when it came to Roy Hodgson. It was an incredibly poor performance from Liverpool, as was so often the case under the aforementioned manager, though it has to be said Wolves put in a fantastic performance on the day.

The away tie was much better for Liverpool, recording a comfortable three goal win. It was reassuring to see Liverpool actually playing well away from home for the first time in a while. Though I have to say looking back the win feels a bit bittersweet, with the two scorers on the day, Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles, now with Chelsea.

Thomas: What’s your opinion on Mick McCarthy?

Mike: Some consider his brand of football somewhat defensive, but he’s done a fantastic job with Wolves, bringing them up from the Championship and, most importantly, keeping them in the Premier League, something which is no easy task given the number of clubs who are relegated straight after they come up.

Thomas: Which of our players do you rate and why?

Mike: Kevin Doyle is a great front man who I certainly wouldn’t mind having at Anfield to keep competition for places high alongside Suarez, Carroll and Bellamy. Matt Jarvis is also a fantastic player who often doesn’t get the credit he deserves from the mainstream media.

Thomas: Where do you think Wolves will finish this season?

Mike: I’d predict they’ll finish safely around the middle of the table. Whilst I don’t think they have enough to challenge for European places I think they certainly have more quality in the squad than many other teams who will likely be battling it out around the bottom of the table.

Thomas: Ah, you’re too kind. What question should I have asked you and what would your answer be to that question?

Mike: Who’s likely to be the Premier League top scorer come the end of the season? To which I would have answered, despite the prolific form of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez.

Thomas: Can’t see it myself. Barring injuries, I can see Rooney getting 35+ in the league alone. A bold prediction though so I tip my hat to you. Finally, what’s your prediction for Saturday? Wolves secured a 1-0 win at Anfield last season. Any chance of a repeat?

Mike: I think Liverpool are a much better side this season under Kenny Dalglish than they were under Roy Hodgson last time Wolves visited Anfield, but it also has to be said that Wolves have improved, too. Still, for me it’s going to be a Liverpool win. 3-1 is my prediction.

Thomas: Understandable. Thanks for chatting with us Mike and good luck for the season (after Saturday).

‘We’ve scored 10 goals in three games, we have beaten Liverpool at Anfield already,’ screamed the PA announcer before kick off.

‘We can do it again today, and take a giant leap up the Premier League,’ he yelled.

At 12.44pm, we were everywhere and nowhere baby, so where were the team?

Nowhere. In a performance to rival our hapless Boxing Day no show against Wigan, the lads were at it again, producing a first half performance that Jamie Redknapp described as the worst we will play for a year.

Ball puts a shift into the net

Thirty eight minutes before a solitary shot at goal and a complete inability to string more than two passes together as we lumped ball after ball after ball in the general direction of Doyle and Fletcher.

In some ways, this was worse than Wigan because we didn’t have the ‘early goal ruined our plans’ excuse that was pedalled so idly in the aftermath.

This time, there was no plan.

Liverpool, with their extra man in midfield, cut through the rusty Henry and anonymous Milijas like a hot knife through butter.

And when the two midfield men are having a tough time, our 4-4-2 formation looks as ugly as the Molineux pitch itself.

Speaking of which, how can our state-of-the-art, £1 million surface have ever fallen into such a shocking state of disrepair?

A horse of the year show would struggle to do such damage, never mind a glut of fixtures and reserve games week after week, which the turf hasn’t been subjected to this season.

If Adam Hammill felt intimidated before he stepped onto the ‘grass’, then God knows how he felt when he realised he had to run with the ball at his feet through the terrain for 17 minutes.

Not that this is an excuse for what happened today. Liverpool put paid to the myth that they are a two man team, full of useless, foreign failures.

In Meireles they have a real class act, whose bald pate was head and shoulders above any other player on the ‘pitch’, while Dalglish has added organisation to their previously failing back line, replacing flakiness with feistiness throughout the rest of his team.

And we all know about Torres.

Couple this with a listless home performance and there was only ever going to be one result.

How can Milijas, who ran the Anfield midfield so majestically only weeks ago, look so anonymous? Even Sammy Lee – who covered 24 miles of technical area according to Pro-Zone – looked more proactive.

How can a team, who could all claim to be man-of-the-match contenders at Anfield, look so utterly lost this time around?

Zubar trod water, (or was it the quick sand pitch?) Berra looked ponderous, while Stearman did at least battle on gamely, annoying Torres frequently and catching the eye occasionally, if not the odd divot and ballboy.

Collectively, the back four were inexplicably incoherent, summed up by Zubar’s daydreaming for the first.

Stephen Hunt started the game feverishly, but ended it lost like the rest of his team.

Then there was Jarvis, who played as badly as most can remember, in another showing that defies explanation.

Forget the ‘harsh scoreline’ nonsense. 3-0 was more than fair considering all of Liverpool’s misses in the first half, featuring fine Hennessey saves off Torres and Maxi, not to mention Meireles’s rasper that grazed a post. In reply, we had a Fletcher half chance easily saved.

Liverpool started the second half as they played the first and scored a belter through Meireles. Anyone who dubs his 30 yard strike as ‘unlucky’ is frankly delusional, considering the same player had a one-on-one saved by Wayne within minutes of his wondergoal. Was that unlucky too?

Yes, we created numerous crossing opportunities as the second half progressed, but none in the vicinity of our strikers, whose happy knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time is starting to grate.

And if we are to keep peppering the box in the games to come, then surely we need a big man who can head a ball with meaning towards the target?

A couple of shots on target in 90 minutes tell their own story.

Adam Hammill at least offered one glimpse of promise on an otherwise unfathomable afternoon.

Of whom, Mick said in ominous belligerence: “He’s going to be a good player for us and will fit in because he’ll work hard and is prepared to put a shift in.”

Our 14th and heaviest home defeat of the season suggests we might need a bit more than hard work Mick, however much we love the lads for it.

After last Saturday’s spirited defeat at Man City and the convincing midweek triumph over Doncaster, Wolves entertain Liverpool in tomorrow’s early kick-off.

With 8 defeats from their 11 away games to date and only one win, it’s easy to see why Kenny and co find themselves down in 13th place. They’ve picked up more points at home than Arsenal, but their wretched away form continues to derail any possible progress.

Wolves are looking to complete a famous double

Pundits accused Roy Hodgson of employing negative tactics, which is hard to dispute given that they’ve only mustered 8 goals on their travels. So it will be interesting to see whether Dalglish attempts a more adventurous gameplan tomorrow.

They’ll still be without Steven Gerrard, following his sending off at Old Trafford a few weeks back, which is unquestionably a boost for Wolves. He might not have been firing on all cylinders prior to his suspension but we know he’s capable of brilliance.

For Wolves, I expect to see a couple of changes to the side that lost out at Man City, with Karl Henry restored to the midfield and Steven Mouyokolo coming into the back four. That would mean a lineup of:

Hennessy

Mouyokolo
Berra
Stearman
Zubar

Jarvis
Henry
Milijas
Hunt

Fletcher
Doyle

If that does turn out to be the starting eleven, I’d pretty much agree with the selection. I think we’ve got to go 4-4-2 and have a go against a struggling Liverpool defence, but by bringing Karl Henry in to anchor the midfield and picking four proper defenders, we should add some steel.

The subs bench should also be a lot stronger than it’s been in recent weeks, with new signing Adam Hammill likely to be named in the squad. He’ll be hoping to get one over on the club that launched his career.

Prediction League

Congratulations to Stourbridge Wolf for usurping me at the top of the Prediction League table. Although the point he scored for predicting defeat Man City was only enough to draw him level, he takes the lead courtesy of ‘S’ coming before ‘T’.

Unsurprisingly, nobody went for 4-3 to City, but many did forecast the correct outcome along with Stourbridge. So take a bow Kowloon Wolf, Jed, Exeter Wolf, Clive from Houston, Philly Pete, AikiWolves, Dazza in Brisbane, Martin, These are the days and last but by no means least, kwolf.

This weekend, I’m plumping for a draw.

Our home form has been good in general this season and I’m expecting us to give them a thorough examination defensively. However, we still have a propensity for conceding slightly soft goals, which I think will give them a chance.

1-1.

If you’re going to Molineux tomorrow (I hear it’s a sell-out), have a great time and get right behind the lads.

Up The Wolves!

A phenomenal performance, three priceless points, and Steve Mardenborough’s name finally consigned to the dustbin.

Our 1-0 win at Liverpool will surely go down as one of the most wonderful and joyous triumphs in years, in a display to cherish whenever the tough times threaten to rear their ugly heads again.

In addition, it might finally stop the lexically deviant Garth Crooks from flicking his pen top angrily the next time Gabby Logan tells him that they have to drop in at Molineux.

For the time being at least, we are no longer a subordinate, throwaway clause at the end of a jumbled Paul Merson sentence at 5.30pm.

We are Wolves and our season starts here!

Milijas: 'Are my eyes playing up?'

Words genuinely can’t do justice to how good we were last night, from Hennessey’s commanding presence in goal (and crucial save from Mereiles) to Sylvan and Stephen Ward’s tireless running up front.

If Ward was an impenetrable presence in our line-up before the game, his name must now be as deeply etched on the teamsheet as Steve Bull’s under Turner.

But after such a joyous victory, our goalscoring hero’s inclusion over our £7 million, six start signing can be debated another time.

Perhaps more pressing questions are whether Berra and Stearman can replicate their colossus showings on a weekly basis from now on?

Can Zubar and Elokobi pick up from where they left off on Merseyside?

Will Milijas (possibly my MOM) and Foley win the ball and then keep it so sumptuously, for so long, in the fixtures to come?

And moreover, was our Boxing Day disaster just a one off or does it tell us that January still can’t come round quick enough, despite this monumental showing?

With Big Mick defying the odds in the dugout once more, we can be sure that whatever the answers above, it won’t be for the lack of effort and togetherness.

Wolves head to Anfield tomorrow night looking to make amends for that abject Boxing Day defeat against Wigan.

Mick McCarthy will know that having sunk to the bottom of the Premier League table, patience will be in short supply should performances and results not improve quickly.

Steven Gerrard headed Liverpool to victory last season

Unfortunately for him, Liverpool’s home form has been pretty formidable this season, even if their mid-table position suggests otherwise. They’ve registered 5 wins and 2 draws from their 8 games to date, with Blackpool being the only side to leave Merseyside with a maximum.

By contrast, Wolves have been abysmal away from Molineux, losing 7 and drawing just once. However, that single point was registered in Liverpool against Everton, so if you’re clutching at straws and looking for omens, perhaps that’s one to hold onto.

Mick’s team selection will no doubt be under scrutiny and I’m expecting a couple of changes that surrendered so meekly to Wigan. Here’s my predicted lineup:

Hennessy

Zubar
Berra
Stearman
Elokobi

Edwards
Foley
Milijas
Jarvis

Fletcher
SEB

Fletcher is overdue a start so perhaps this will be his opportunity following another goal from the bench on Boxing Day. Jarvis will surely return and I expect Hunt to make way for him, with Edwards preferred on the opposite flank.

Alternatively, Mick might prefer to go 4-5-1 and if that’s the case, I’d expect Jones to play instead of Fletcher. Ward could conceivably play at left-back but I think big George would be unfortunate to lose his place.

Prediction League

Well done to Rob for correctly predicting a 2-1 Wigan win. For a change, most people went for a Wolves victory and they duly kicked us all in the knackers.

Got to be realistic and go for a defeat in this one.

I’m feeling pretty low after that awful showing against Wigan and can’t see us getting a result at Anfield right now.

I’ll plump for 3-1 to Liverpool.

Perhaps if they’re under par and we can somehow cut out the errors at the back, we could scrape a result, but the latter in particular seems highly unlikely.

If you’re going to the game, have a great time and roar the lads on.

Up The Wolves.

As spectacles go, it wasn’t pretty. Two teams effectively parking the bus was never going to make for a classic encounter.

But Wolves don’t need swashbuckling attacking performances, they need points and this was a welcome one against a faltering Liverpool side.

I’ve been uber-critical of our manager’s tactics of late, but I think he got it spot on last night. Sacrificing a forward for an extra midfielder allowed us to compete in the middle of the park and with Kevin Doyle doing the work of two strikers, we still offered legitimate menace in attack.

Kevin Doyle - Best performance for Wolves?

There’s very little point in highlighting the fact we were solider defensively in this game, as the shape of the side was always going to have that effect. But every player did their job and when mistakes were made, someone was always on hand to sweep up the mess.

Craddock and Berra were particularly impressive; repelling everything that came their way. When fit, they’re still the best center half pairing we have at the club. Zubar and Ward both looked comfortable too, so that back four should be maintained at all costs in my opinion.

With both sides plonking three men in the center of midfield, time on the ball was always going to be at a premium, but Wolves gave as good as they got in there. Mancienne seemed to be sitting deepest, which allowed Milijas and even Karl Henry to surge forward in support of the lone striker. But it was the Chelsea man who stood out for me, stifling the influence of Steven Gerrard and using the ball well in tight areas of the pitch.

Foley was again neat and tidy, even getting himself into the penalty area a few times to connect with crosses from the left. But I still feel we’d be a better side with a natural winger out there, particularly in this system where attacking from wide areas is crucial.

On the other flank, we do have a natural winger and Matty Jarvis caused Liverpool headaches all night long. His pace and trickery will give Jamie Carragher nightmares for a long time to come and it was just a shame that nobody profited from his good work.

But the man of the match champagne belongs to Kevin Doyle. His ability to hold the ball up under heavy pressure and find passes in tight spaces is amazing. My old man pointed out that we’d be lucky to keep the Irish international, even if we manage to stay up. On last night’s evidence, I’m inclined to agree. He not only looked a class above anything we had, but he outshone all of the seasoned internationals in the Liverpool side too.

We move on to a crucial match against Hull on Saturday and a similar committed performance shouldn’t steer us too far wrong. The only question is whether Mick will maintain this 4-5-1 or return to a more attacking 4-4-2 system.

Your guess is as good as mine on that one.

There’s added spice to this game following the controversial events that occurred during the Boxing Day clash between the two sides at Anfield.

Pepe Reina in particular can expect a hostile reception. The Liverpool goalkeeper sprinted the length of the pitch in that match to ensure Stephen Ward took an early shower, which seemed unprofessional, to say the very least about his actions.

Steven Gerrard is likely to play tonight

That dismissal spoiled what had been an engrossing encounter up to that point and the game ended up being a procession for the home side, once they’d got their noses in front. Wolves certainly need better luck if they’re to cause an upset this evening.

You could classify any points picked up tonight as a bonus, but Liverpool are vulnerable this season, particularly on their travels, so a positive result isn’t out of the question. We’ll need to play far better than we have been though and find a cutting edge in the final third.

The team selection tonight will be very interesting, with players like David Jones and Ronald Zubar surely having played their way into contention with impressive displays in the cup on Saturday. There’s also the question of who’ll lineup in the center of defence. Mancienne was shaky against Wigan but performed better against Palace in a game that Berra struggled in. Here’s my predicted eleven:

Hahnemann

Zubar
Berra
Craddock
Ward

Foley
Henry
Jones
Jarvis

SEB
Doyle

I’d love to see Jones and Milijas in the same team, but I’m positive Mick will persist with playing Foley further forward than he should do on the right. I think SEB will continue up front, so hopefully his fortunes will improve against the side he supported as a boy.

It should be a sizzling atmosphere in a sold out Molineux tonight and a good performance is long overdue. But with Liverpool showing signs that they’re slowly turning a corner and Wolves struggling at both ends of the pitch, I can’t predict anything other than defeat. Hearing the news that Steven Gerrard has made a speedy recovery in time to play doesn’t bode well either.

We’ve already shown signs that we can compete for long periods against the top sides, but when we go a goal down there doesn’t seem to be a plan B. So if we are to get something, that first goal really is worth it’s weight in gold.

If you’re going to the match tonight, have a great time and roar the lads on.

Up the Wolves.
