Pathetic: Wolves 0 Birmingham City 1

Pathetic Wolves. Absolutely pathetic.

I’m so completely and utterly incensed by such a weak, spineless, uninspired, disgusting performance, that I don’t particularly want to talk about it.

McCarthy has big questions to answer

McCarthy has big questions to answer

Losing this match would always be gut-wrenchingly painful to take, but going down without a fight is just unacceptable.

I’m afraid the blame has to lie at the feet of the manager today. The team selection was wrong, the shape of the side gave us nothing going forward or defensively and any tactics we might or might not have had didn’t work. Nobody had a clue.

Mick McCarthy has absolutely no idea what his best team is at the moment, which quite frankly, 14 games in, is terrifying. I mean, even I went to the game today knowing exactly what the Birmingham side would be, which I think speaks volumes about where the two sides are. While Blues looked a compact unit, all comfortable in the positions they’re playing and working coherently together, Wolves were the complete opposite. How can that be?

I’ll tell you how. The shape and balance of this side has been completely torn out. Gone are the attacking full-backs who offered us an extra dimension going forward. Gone is the target man who fed our talented striker and allowed him to run riot. Gone is the skillful passer in the middle of the park, who would sit nicely alongside Henry and find people’s feet with clever touches. Gone. Gone. Gone.

You see, for all the defensive shortcomings of last season’s side, they bloody well knew how to play football and score goals. This side still has all of those defensive frailties, but no longer has the bite to even compete at the other end of the pitch.

Now, injuries prevented the likes of Foley, Jones, Iwelumo, etc to figure today, I can see that. But we need like-for-like players that can come in and fill those gaps. And we don’t got ‘em.

But the real kick in the teeth today was that Wolves didn’t even compete. If we lose, but leave everything on the pitch, I can accept that and move on. But to limp off, having practically surrendered in a local derby, is disgraceful.

The fans deserve better. Much better.

Thomas – I didn’t go to the game (I have the joy of El Classico vs Bolton next week to look forward to) but it sounds like you’re bang on the dollar. The blame lies squarely at MM’s feet. I think calls for his head are premature though – it remains up to him to put things right.

  2. ben says:

hooray 4that blog mate. unlike burnley,we have abandoned every principle that got us here. we did it before a ball was kicked when we narrowed the pitch. what a meak, limp message to tell our once marauding team. it is like a tennis court now. at least burnley accept a few drubbings to stick to their beliefs. this team wouldnt make the championship top 12 now. it is awful! the time i was most optimistic was after our 1-1 with villa. mick made 5changes to that team today. i just feel sad now. and as for our fabled other two ‘M’s…theyve cheated us and sold us down the river. couldnt afford johnson or dann. how? why? couldnt compete with a chairman-less blues. couldnt compete with a coca cola wba (for thomas). a pair of conning, manipulative, liars. i suppose they were bang on with their now infamous ‘we wont do a wba’ statement…when we go down we’ll stay down.

  3. kevb8ll says:

Obviously I was pleased with the win, but like you say Tom – Wolves made it easy for us. Where has that energy gone that you had last season?

(My next comment is made knowing that we are not safe yet!) I GENUINELY hope you guys don’t go down, but I fear it is going to be a tough season for you. 3 points against Bolton could help turn things around.

    Chin up guys.

    Kev

  4. Tim says:

“..You see, for all the defensive shortcomings of last season’s side, they bloody well knew how to play football and score goals…”

Yeah, in the CCC. It’s a completely different league and SEB and Kites just aren’t up to is as of now. Will Chris be able to compete at this level? We don’t know yet.

It was sad. Makes me glad I miscalculated the time in Toronto and missed the first half hour.

And how do you give up a goal in the third minute? That was worse than Chelski.

  5. Thomas says:

Tim, our side from last season would have caused Blues all kinds of problems today. They also would have had a good few more points on the board too.

You can’t judge SEB and Kites when they’re surrounded by players operating out of position. Writing them off is madness.

dboy, you’re spot on mate. Completely Mick’s fault today but as you say, far too early (not to mention short-sighted) to be calling for his head.

  6. Dazza In Brisbane says:

I’m sorry but calls for his head are hardly premature. That “performance” has been simmering for weeks. We are totally clueless, tactically inept, have no pace, and rely on luck rather than skill when defending. We saw it all her in OZ is glorious HD, and as soon as Blues scored, you may as well have switched the lights out.Blake is RUBBISH at this level, and Doyle is getting lazier each game. I have never seen a worse central midfield pairing than sideways Karl and one pace Edwards, they should be the engine of our team, sadly they are passengers. Pack Mancienne back off to Chelsea and for goodness sake, get VOKES BACK!!! I really can;t see us winning another game this season, we have become a total joke , and we are making same mistakes as we did in 2003.Job done though eh Jez?

  7. Jed says:

F**king wank! (It wouldn’t let me put wank as it said my message was too short, so I added a word)

  8. Exeter Wolf says:

Mick will be gone by Xmas! Especially if we don’t beat Burnley at home! I’ve just put my Burnley ticket in the post (TPS 3). At least I can switch over & watch ‘Murder She Wrote’ if we’re 1 Nil down after 5 minutes!

  9. Hallam says:

This probably won’t be of much interest to any of you but my whole day has been crap.

Firstly, my train into town was “full” and no one was allowed on so I got into Wolverhampton at half 11.
Then I had to wait a good 20 minutes in the queue at the ticket office to get my Spurs ticket (oh how I dread this match now!)
Then the performance, I don’t think anything even needs to be said about this)
I next missed the next two trains home and the bus didn’t turn up.

The only positive to take from today has been the FA Cup draw and I pray Aldershot can beat Tamworth to give me the game of my life (to those who don’t know, the Shots are my second team ;) )

  10. Jed says:

My mate is a die hard Sunderland fan. His comments about MM are beginning to ring true to me. He likes MM, and thinks he is an excellent Championship manager, but thought he severly lacked the tactical know-how to be a top flight manager. I doubt if he will be fired though. For me I think we should bring in a new number two. TC is and always has been useless! So maybe its time to bring in a tactician to help out MM. How about Gerard Houllier or someone who knows this league and the teams inside out???

Today was a shambles. There is quite clearly some unrest in the camp, Halfords face said it all when he was pulled off after 30 mins. MM’s post match excuse was laughable as was his decision to bring Ward on at half time “We needed a left footed player at left back” – no f**king shit son!. At one point our team was last years team other than Hahnemann and Doyle, we simply haven’t progressed this season. The people we brought in are at best mediocre Championship players. Our defence is a nightmare, I think I could even score against them and I’m shit! SEB, for all his heroics last season, wasn’t even sweating today, his shirt was bone dry and why, because he’s bone bloody idle! You can argue he’s not getting the service and thats a fair point, but again today he missed an opportunity my 4 yr old would have nodded in. Doyle looks completely fed up, and rightly so – I bet he’s wondering why the f**k he signed for such a shambolic outfit. We have no fight, no bite and no guile. We will not win again this year, and I doubt we’ll even score a goal unless its a fluke!
I’m thoroughly pissed off, however at least living in Canada means I haven’t shelved out for a season ticket, because it would probably be lying on the pitch in several pieces!

  11. Scoop says:

Daz – glad somebody else gas remembered out Fat Controllers assurances earlier this year.
‘Job done’ alright – for Moxey! £2.1 MILLION was his bonus in 2003 so what with inflation etc, he doubtless merited more in 2009!
And yet we couldnt afford £5k/week extra to secure Dann or the £5m transfer fee for Johnson!
Ben’s right – we’ve been sold dowm the river. Its the biggest betrayal since, since er, the last time!!!!
The whole place is a shambles. Like the early auditions on X-Factor, amateurish beyond belief while Jez Cowell laughs all the way to the bank.
‘Seamless’ video screens that still dont work, one poxy scrolling advertising hoarding – its ALL so tawdry and 2nd rate. Christ, we’ve even got a politically correct balance of male/female ball-boys. Brilliant alternative to using our academy lads who might have told Ridgwell to F=ck off and get his own f=cking towell instead of obliging his every whim!
Morgan needs to rip it up and start again pretty dam quick. Sack Moxey, sack Mad Mick, f=ck off at least 8 of this squad, get a manager who can manage, SCRAP THE £20K SALARY CAP and invest in a little bit more quality.
Racked off with myself for falling for this, the latest and cruellest scam under Moxeys stewardship.

  12. Hallam says:
  13. Dazza In Brisbane says:

Don’t worry, Bolton haven’t kept a clean sheet yet this season……..

  14. Dazza In Brisbane says:

Scoop, I’m sure you speak for at least 20,000 others mate. It’s all wrong. Morgan has no real interest in Wolves, the funding shows that. We will be bottom before Christmas, attendances will dwindle, and we need drastic action now. MCCARTHY OUT!!!

  15. EmeraldPete says:

The day we got promotion the very first words out of my mouth were “SACK MCARTHY NOW”!!!!

Ben and others will no doubt rememer me saying this, and remember telling me I must have been smoking crack!!!

He is a proven “promotion on a shoestring” CCC manger. He is also proven one of the all time worst PL managers ever.

    He has to go.

  16. Rich says:

Terrible performance, the lack of fight was the worst. I do not believe in sacking Mick though. Sure it looks like we’re on for relegation, but after 14 games you can’t forget the last 3 years.

Why is no one blaming the 11 that were out there on the pitch. Maybe we should flog Halford too, if that’s how how he reacts to being taken off.

To be fair to Mick, he tried to change it with Kightly and Ward.

  17. ben says:

Thought this would make interesting reading guys

    http://www.wolves.co.uk/page/News/0,,10307~1786424,00.html

I wonder if Moxey regrets saying this now? He’ll spin us another yarn no doubt.

  18. Scoop says:

The smug b*stard. Greasy, slimey racked off tosser.
And we fell for it hook line and sinker.
What price half-seaon tickets now Moxey you fat t*at????

  19. Louie says:

So Bolton are yet to keep a clean sheet and Burnley haven’twon away.
    Oh no.

If we had stuck to our principles of last season, our team could well look likle this.

    Hennessey

    Foley
    Berra
    Mancienne
    Ward

    Kightly
    Henry
    Milijas
    Jarvis

    Doyle
    Ebanks-Blake

That is a good team, good enough for the prem I think. Narrowing the pitch was an awful plan. Did Stoke change their style because every said you can’t playfootball like thatand stay up? Hell no! Same for Birmingham, kept it the same. Burnley haven’t stopped their style. Mick has tried to be too clever, something he isn’t.

  20. Jed says:

Louie, unfortunately I have to disagree with your team. The one you display is a good CCC team but a very weak Premier team. It’s already been shown, 9 of your 11 played some part in yesterdays debacle. You omit Craddock who is our leading scorer and arguably most consistent performer. As for Kightly and SEB, well I’m sorry but I must be the only one who can see that they are just not good enough for this league.

Stoke narrowed their pitch last season and it worked well. I can assure you that a wider pitch would achieve only one thing, a higher number in the goals against column. If we can’t defend a narrow pitch then how the f**k could we defend the extra space of a wider pitch? We would be annihilated!

We have a poor team with rock bottom confidence. It won’t be long before the changing room turns on McCarthy and then we’ll see even worse performances. I feel for McCarthy, he’s a good honest man. It took Dave Jones several years to finally admit that he had been let down by the board and Moxey, how long before McCarthy does the same? Moxey is the root of all evil in our club, always has been. Until he leaves then our club will always under achieve in the highest tier of English Football.

  21. Scoop says:

Couldnt agree with you more Jed about Moxey.
Why, oh why doesnt Morgan get his own people in?
The Fat Controller has to go!

  22. Louie says:

Kites and SEB not good enough? They’ve only played 8 games between ‘em!! Neither have been fit while playing and Kightly hascreated and SEB has scored one. Sylvan scored 25 in the CCC which means he deserves a crack at the prem. Kightly scored ten and set up 25. Jed, your point about them is jut not fair. Craddock has done well and scored some, but I can’t see him getting past this season and he can’t last the whole season every game I believe.

It worked with a wider pitch. We were more creative and scored bloody loads. Sure we might concede some, but I won’t be complaining if we outscore soem teams.

  23. Stourbridge wolf says:

Have to agree with Jed I’m afraid not Louie.

I paid £38 to go and watch that rubbush on Sunday and they didnt even make a fight of it.

Hennessey – or chocolate wrists as Collymore called him. Glad to see him out

Foley – lets see him back and fit.
Berra – turned inside out by Jerome – yes Jerome not Ronaldo. Waste of money, out of his depth.
Mancienne – Roasted by Jerome so badly that MM switched him with Stearman after 20 mins. I here he “earns” £1.5m per year – he didn’t even earn a packet of crisps on Sunday.
Ward – I’m no fan of MM’s love child but he did well to be fair compared to the rest.

Kightly – it hurts to say it but not good enough, not fast enough to beat Prem defenders and no tricks.
Henry – probably our best player so far this season (which is a shock), a local lad so I think he just cares more than the rest.
Milijas – luxury player, great delivery from a dead ball but nothing else. I went to the Arsenal game and he had to play everything first time as if he was scared of the ball.
Jarvis – has a go but lacks a quality ball into the box. Also gave away a penalty on Sunday we were lucky to get away with.

Doyle – started well and still looking like one of our best players. Needs to get in the goals.
Ebanks-Blake – after the heroics of the last two seasons it again pains me to say just not good enough – add to the list with Nugent, Earnshaw, Chopra et al who scored freely in the CCC but couldn’t do it in the Prem.
    n Sunday.

Fear we are doomed already – too much money wasted on players that dont even get a game, and too many players that havent raised their game. Feel like we have gone backwards.

  24. Jed says:

Louie, it doesn’t matter if SEB and Kightly bagged 500 goals between them in the CCC, in this league they have done nothing. Yes SEB has scored a goal, from the penalty spot – he has had at least 4 great chances to score from open play and hasn’t. He is off the pace and creates very little. Kightly as Stourbridge Wolf so eloquently puts it is “not good enough, not fast enough to beat Prem defenders and no tricks” – so far, other than the penalty, (which I could argue was more to do with Milijas’s flick and really poor defending than Kightly’s skill and pace) what exactly has he brought to the table this season? If you don’t know I’ll tell you – nothing! It may be that he is only 70% fit in which case he shouldn’t be playing and we should have adequate cover to replace him, we don’t, he plays, he’s shit, he gets injured, we still don’t have cover!

And Louie, I’m interested in who exactly the teams are you expect us to ‘outscore’ with a wider pitch, because for every one you name (if you can) I can give you 18 that will outscore us!

On Sunday we lumped the ball up the field a lot, our two strikers are small and (supposedly) pacy, they need it to feet. If we are playing the ball in high then we need someone to aim at, otherwise its just an exercise in conceding possession!

Anyway onwards to Bolton, don’t know about anyone else but I’m nervous, not about the game but about the riot that could happen if we get turned over. Fortunately I’ll be watching the game from the relative safety of my arm chair!

  25. Jed says:

Look at the quality we’ve been linked with – laugh? Not me I’m crying!

    http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Wolves-willing-to-pay-Derby-3m-for-striker-Rob-Hulse-article239339.html

3 million for that donkey says it all to me! No ambition!

  26. Dazza In Brisbane says:

Blake’s form is indefensible, he is clueless, just shows the gulf between a good CC striker and a good PL striker (which Blake is not). Our signings now have become more than questionable, and McCarthy has managed to turn one of England’s best defensive prospects into a shadow of his former self. Halford…what a donkey…Surman..lightweight…The Hoff..what a clown he is…Milijas, Castillo…great for other clubs, but appalling for us. McCarthy has no clue what he is doing, how many time do we lose a “must win” game. I actaully think we will beat Burnely and Bolton, but sadly, with tonking to come at Liverpool, Naure ans Spurs, it really doesnt matter. We never signed enough quality to stay up, and Moxey knew this.Morgan needs to act, grow some, and get teh chopping block out. However, I doubt he will do anything at all, because he hasn’t got our club at heart. If it was Liverpool, it would be a different matter.

  27. Dazza In Brisbane says:

We will be down before the Christmas decorations….. I saw this on another forum , at least it made me smile!

  28. leinster wolf says:

Just back from my third trip over to see the lads…. Havn’t seen a goal yet !!! 3 x 1 nils… vs Utd C.Cup & Pompey & yesterday. Had a great time in the pubs in Wolverhampton & got to chew the fat with other Wolves…. However, the football….. were in big trouble… no fight, no game plan, route one to 2 small strikers !!! no confidence, 2 dreadful central defenders & mediocre CCC midfield… Apart from being beaten on the pitch, the dreadedBlues made mincemeat of us in the support stakes.. Why do we give away supporters such a prominent part of the stadium…. Look where Manure & Everton & Villa give away fans… Sh** seats out of TV camers range….. Stick them in the corner of the Billy Wright & leave the SouthBank alone….

  29. Stourbridge wolf says:

Lets look at the list of signings…

Hoff = never seen a bloke this tall miss so many headers, looks like bambi on ice. At least that bloke Hull got was on a free.
Castillo = lazy, one footed, slow.
Millias = Great dead ball – but… no pace, no composure on the ball – luxury player we can not afford
Halford = £2.5million for a long throw – Nice business Sunderland at least Dick Turpin wore a mask!
Surman = who? ‘One for the future’ I’m sure – shame that future will be in the Championship!
Zubar = looks ok, but has missed too many games.
Doyle = Looks our most likely player, but will soon get fed up with the lack of service.

If I was that bad in my job I’d be out on my ear.

Bolton on Saturday – what is the bet they will just out muscle our boys and sneak it one nil? Thankfully i have resisted buying a ticket for this one – I’m sure when I watch it on football first it will be a great advert for the best league in the world!!!

  30. Thomas says:

Great to see a couple of new names commenting. Stourbridge wolf & Leinster wolf, welcome.

Leinster, that’s shocking yo haven’t even seen a goal. I feel for you, I really do. And your point about the away fans is something I’ve been going on about for ages.

Why the hell do we give them the full length of the pitch to raw their team on? I fully understand that police like to segregate a certain way to help keep fans safe going to and from the ground. But we should be shoving them in the corner somewhere and making the atmosphere far more hostile.

Stourbridge, I certainly get your frustration mate. And the signings haven’t been good enough. However, from performances we saw at the start of the campaign, we know these players can do much better than they did against Blues. It’s up to Mick to pick a balanced side, with players in their correct positions to at least give us a chance.

Personally, for Bolton, this is the side I’d like to see (taking injuries into account of course):

    Hennessy or Hahnemann

    Foley
    Craddock
    Mancienne
    Ward

    Edwards
    Henry
    Milijas
    Jarvis

    Keogh/Hoff
    Doyle

That’s a back four with proper balance to it, a midfield with a player who can actually pass the ball and something different up front. I think we need to make a change up top to give us another dimension.

  31. Louie says:

Come on, You can’t expect them to play great when they are in a higher league and half fit. It’s just not fair. Kightly should not have played properly yet and SEB needs a run of games.

With a wider pitch we would have had a better chance v Hull, West Ham, Portsmouth and Birmingham. 1 point against them 4, at home!!

  32. Stourbridge wolf says:

Cant help but think a wider pitch will just result in better players taking the p*ss out of our full backs!

Thomas I agree that the earlier performances were not too bad – even when we didn’t pick up points. But the truth for promoted sides is that unless you beat the teams in your section of the league at home you will go down. We have now failed against West Ham, Hull, Portsmouth and Blues and I can not see where we can make up those points later in the season.

I kidded myself that we had a chance to stay up over the summer as I thought we were better than the teams listed above – and I fell for the ‘Job done’ lies that were fed to us by the club. Truth is that we are worse then all of them – even Hull have Bullard, Hunt and Giovanni!

Doomed I say! Back to the CCC – and five minutes of coverage on the footy league show at 1am on a Sunday morning! Depressed!

  33. Stourbridge wolf says:

    It gets worse…

Derby striker Rob Hulse, who rejected a move to Middlesbrough in September, is a £3m target for Wolves.
    Full story: Daily Mirror

I hope this is BS! As a striker from Derby is just what we need – aren’t they nearly in the relegation zone of the CCC? Weren’t they relegated from the Prem with the worst points total ever? Add this to the link to the Preston defender and why dont we buy Savage too – he will “put in a good shift” I’m sure – pathetic!

  34. Bob China says:

‘On Sunday we lumped the ball up the field a lot, our two strikers are small and (supposedly) pacy, they need it to feet.’

If SEB is not receiving any decent service, how do you know he’s not good enough?

  35. Bob China says:

Castillo, lazy?!?! where the hell has that come from?

  36. Dazza In Brisbane says:

Did we really pay 2.5mill for that donkey Halford? For that alone MM should walk. As for Rob Hulse, surely not….you are kidding right? Whoever next? Sad thing is, Hulse is teh type, qaulity , and level of player that will only come to us. Being earmarked for relegation is harldy a great selling point come January when the transfer window opens. I am also startingt o question the 6.5mill we paid for Doyle…he’s good, but 6.5mill? come on. We have got ourselves in a shocking mess, I saw the game sin Australia, and I said then that although they wer eonly “friendlies” only Zubar and Keogh looked like they were interested. The rest of them were on a jolly. I saw them training at the WACA, they never broke sweat.I sa wthe game against perth Glory, not even a quarter pace… yes, I know we didnt want injuries …but we did (Iwelumo), and hundreds of us paid 1000’2 of $$$ to get there to witness it.The fans have always been treate dlike shite by Wolves, next season may be on ST too many for some.

  37. Stourbridge wolf says:

Castillo was definately lazy against Arsenal – again (being the mug I am!) I had the pleasure of paying £38 to see him just watch his man run past him to score twice when Arsenal came to the Molineux. Granted it was Arsenal though – he is by no means the worst I have seen this season but I would rather have Hunt or Bullard in my midfield

For me he seems very one footed and only plays the ball sideways – we already have Henry for that! Ha, ha, ha! (an unfair joke as Henry has actually been ok from the games I’ve been to – perhaps as a local lad he actually cares)

After my rants of the last couple of days by chance a TPS ticket has turned up for Burnley!!! No thanks Mr Moxey/Morgan you can stick that where the sun dont shine! I didnt go for two years after out last pitiful Premier league outing and I can feel myself falling out with the club again. Why should I spend my hard earned when Mr Morgan only has a half @rsed attempt at giving us a chance to stay up.

  38. Stourbridge wolf says:

Dazza – better to be over there buddy trust me! I had to go into work on monday to have the p*ss taken by all the blue noses, and all I could say was that the “better team won!” And the weather is cr@p here too!

I said WTF to everyone when the OZ tour was announced – can you think of a worse preparation for your first season back in the Prem? Jet lag, other side of the world at a key time for transfers, poor teams, poor pitches – complete shambles. But as you hint in your post it looks like a nice holiday we would all like to have, but most cant afford!

Oh and Halford was defo over £2million (but undisclosed) – around the same price Hull paid for Hunt. Got to stop going on about Hull, but it just gets to me that even that perma-tan idiot at a cr@p club can attract better players than MM.
