Wolves Vs Leeds United Preview

The sun was shining on Elland Road back in August when Wolves kicked off their Championship campaign.

Leeds Wolves

29 games later, the clouds have gathered.

Another week of accusations, denials and finger pointing has left everybody of an old goal persuasion exhausted.

Victory is the only tonic.

Some have spoken of protest, others of rousing support, but the fog of apathy prevents either.

It’s up to the players to lift the Molineux gloom. Only they have the power to administer the thumping shot of adrenalin we so desperately need.

Strong characters and big performances are the order of the day.

Neil Warnock knows all about both.

His Leeds side are knocking about in midtable, pretty much where they’ve been all season. It could still go either way.

New owners have arrived, but the expected cash injection has yet to materialise. Still, they did some business in January, recruiting Wolves target Stephen Warnock and Norwich striker Steve Morrison, albeit with Luciano Becchio going the other way.

They lost 1-0 to Cardiff last weekend, failing to follow-up on the impressive cup win over Spurs. Their away form is terrible, having lost 8 of their 14 games to-date, with only 3 wins. Even we’ve done better than that.

Wolves

The one crumb of comfort from another miserable fortnight was the second half performance at Leicester. After Sako’s missile, we moved the ball well and looked a tidy outfit. We over committed once and paid the price, as tends to happen against teams at the top.

Dean Saunders must retain the same shape and I’d be inclined to stick with the same eleven:

Wolves Leeds

Peszko, Doyle, Edwards and Davis might come into the equation. The shape is as important as the personnel though.

Predictions

46 people correctly predicted defeat at the Walkers Stadium. Unbelievably though, only one of you went for 2-1.

So it’s hats off and two points for westozwolf and a single for the other 45.

On the basis that Saunders put out a team similar to what we saw at Leicester, I’ll stick my neck out and go for a win.

2-1.

The Leeds away following should at the very least make for a good atmosphere. Lets hope our own team and supporters feed off that.

Up The Wolves.

I’m going to be positive and go for a win we have a good history against Leeds at home still remember 1974,75 when they came to molinuex needing a win to clinch the title. I’m hoping history repeats its self we were in trouble that season to, carnt blame Moxey for that one. Wolves to win 2.1 left birthing what nails I’ve got left for the last 10 minuites. Hope if gives Cassidy a game ?

  2. A scrappy battle with a glaring lack of quality in both sides, but I think we’ll sneak this 2-1 and none of that will matter for at least a few hours after the final whistle. That’s what I’m hoping for.

All the form books and all the crap that has been going on at the Mol for the last I don’t know how many months point to a home defeat.

Despite all the talking up of Ebanks-Blake this week I would have him on the bench. Peszko on the right and Siggy up front, we just might score a few then. I think Thomas’s team is more likely and so I will go with another draw. 1 – 1

Why do the management keeping saying these players are good enough when these players keep losing. It’s beyond me.

Would put Pezsko in place of sigurdson. Don’t mind who plays up front….the ball won’t get that far and anyway being a wolves player he’ll miss.

O’hara was poor for me so Davis in for him. And tell doumbia to stop running all over the pitch and concentrate on being creative.

Out with Berra and in with Margreitter. Much better in possession and much much better at distribution.

When thinking about team selection for tomorrow, part of me thinks that DS should take into account the slating that the players that have been here a while have taken over the last couple of days courtesy of the fat one. Surely messrs Doyle, Edwards, Foley, Ward, Berra and Henry should have a massive point to prove. The latter 4 are all a shoe-in for the team anyway so the question would be whether to bring in Doyle and/or Edwards? However, the bigger part of me then thought about it some more and thought that they (especially Doyle)are in fact utterly shit and have had chance after chance after chance to prove a point over the last 3 seasons and have consistently failed to do so, frustrating the shit out of us long suffering supporters in the process. Therefore I’d go along with you Thomas and go same team again. However, DS has spent a fair bit of time talking Doyle up so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come in for Doumbia given we’re at home. I’m going for an ambitious 3-1 Wolves. It simply HAS to get better!

As for the game? The Leicester performance is encouraging enough for me to go for a fairly rare clean sheet and a 2-0 win!

  16. 4-5-1 is an absolute must. Saunders would be bonkers to abandon that. Especially given our current league position. I’d personally go with Siggy up front and Peszko on the wing but I can’t see Saunders doing that given the way he sings the praise of SEB so much.

2-0 to the wolves. C’mon lads. This is an absolute must win. If any one of the teams below us win and we lose we end up in the relegation zone. The championship relegation zone. What the hell!?

    It’s bonkers isn’t it!?

  18. I hope we stick with 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 too. Mccarthy turned to it in our first season in the Prem and we went on an unbeaten run which almost took us to midtable. Since then we have stubbornly stuck to 4-4-2 although the football and results have been dross.

  24. Atmosphere should be good – always is against Leeds. Until we go one down! First goal is vital tomorrow. Second half v Leicester proved we can pass the ball and create chances but I worry that player’s confidence is too shot to get a result tomorrow. One nil Leeds for me i am afraid.

  25. Thomas, like your phrase, ‘ the fog of apathy’.
Would like to see anyone play, other than the usual suspects.
My heart dropped, when I read Saunders thinks he can make E-Blanks, a Premier league striker.
If Edwards is fit I’d play him, as before his injury we were a ‘better’ team.
Personally, think only a thumping victory will get rid of the ‘apathy.’
Wolves 4 Leeds 0 is my hopeful prediction.

I think that if Deån can get him off his horse burger and chips diet he’ll have a better chance.
Unfortunately for the foreseeable future, the only way EB will make a Premier league striker is if a Premier league team buys him – not too likely.
But it would bring a smile to a certain CEO’s face.

Just been looking at the bbc website and today they’ve published a league table of all 122 managers that have worked in the 4 top english divisions this seasons, based on their average points per game whilst in charge. Solbakken comes in at a disappointing 79th of 122 with an average of 1.19 points per game. However, shockingly there lies the man Morgan chose to replace him with in 119th position (out of 122!) with an average of just 0.5 points per game. I know it’s early days but most managers tend to have a honeymoon period! Given some of his substitutions in his games in charge so far, I’m a little concerned as to whether he’s up to the job. I hope I’m being ridiculously premature but this does put into prespective what an appalling start he’s actually made. And all that given that he’s working with a group of players that he keeps telling us are actually really good!

He’s actually in 11th place on his record for Doncaster, it’s his record for us that’s shocking. Granted he’s only 4 games in but I think we’d all have expected him to get a bit more of a reaction from a group of players that were supposedly underachieving and blatantly wanted to see the back of the last manager!

Saunders coaching in the last week results in a comfortable victory. Stale had belief in Doyle and Blake too. His belief was weakened at the end. He surely would have added a striker in january to the squad, and maybe he would have sold Doyle. I truely believe Saunders experience can add a momentum or two to their game, if they want to learn from the man. Exciting

As Clive says we’re a ” dead team walking ” however i feel quite confident about Sat.
    I will try and explain my logic ;

1…In three of the last four matches our commitment and honesty has improved.
2…The tactics used appear to settle the players and make them more positive.
3…I don’t think we’re in free-fall but lose Sat and we are.
4…Leeds are over-rated and WW are under achievers.
5…4-2-3-1 is our best option, even at home.
6…DS is closer than 3 previous managers to using the young’uns.
7…Leeds are slightly higher in my dislike list than Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs.

    So WW 3 – Leeds 2
    As ever UTW !!!!!

  39. If anyone still thinks Moxey is doing a good job just think about this.
Jez is the Chief Executive which means he has overall responsibility for everything at the club including the playing side. He is not the financial director who only has to worry about whether we make a profit – he is responsible for every aspect of the club. Steve Morgan didn’t say “Jez you are the CEO but all you have to do is make a profit”. No, he said “you are the CEO and I want us to be in the Premiership but we mustn’t go into debt getting there or saying there”. So, Jez delegates the playing side to the football manager but he still has control of who is signed and who isn’t signed, who is paid how much and the length of contract each player has.
When we achieved promotion Jez rightly got a whacking big rise and a massive bonus. You can argue all day whether they were excessive but he certainly deserved something decent.
But that was where it all went wrong. He set too rigid a wage structure in place for the Prem. Yes, it would be Jez who did that – all the chairman and/or owner wants to know is that we won’t be going into debt – it would be the CEO who sets such limits.
If Jez had said to Mick one day “Look, Mick, these two players you want both require wages above our limit but, as you really want them, I will sanction the wages just for these two”. No, we would not have done a Portsmouth or a Rangers – an extra £10,000 per week for two players would have cost us an extra £1 million and as the smallest profit we made in the three Prem years was £2 million, we would have had two better players and still made a profit and maybe all the aggravation of the past two or three years may not have happened. And if the other players didn’t like it well isn’t Jez the master negotiator and as the CEO, he is paid to sort out such problems.
But Jez was far too rigid in his approach and for a ha’path of tar sent us to the bottom.
So, don’t tell me Jez is doing a good job – he may have been doing well once but his lack of flexibility has caused our downfall and, if Morgan had the guts, should have caused Jez’s downfall as well. He took the applause when things went well – he should now take the kicks when things are going badly.

    • Absolutely agree Nemo. This ought to be taken for granted but i’m not sure it is…..
A FOOTBALL CLUB EXISTS FOR ONE PURPOSE ONLY, TO PLAY FOOTBALL. THE CLUB CAN ONLY BE JUDGED ON THE QUALITY OF THE TEAM AND WHAT ENTERTAINMENT AND ENJOYMENT IT PROVIDES IT’S SUPPORTERS.
Financial stability is just one, admittedly very important, part of producing the ultimate product; a successful team the supporters can be proud of.
Jez Moxey has now overseen 3 years of repeated failure and decline on the pitch, to a point now when a great club like ours is teetering on the edge of relegation to the the third tier.
He still insists it is a well-run club and boasts of Wolves DNA and changing room ‘protocol’, whatever all that means.
The truth can clearly be seen on the pitch and in the results. Three years of abject failure.

With all the negativity/realism flying around it’s hard not to go for a ‘loss’ prediction. However, Leeds are very inconsistent this season and generally quite poor away from Elland Road. So, on that basis I’ll plump for Wolves to win (is that how u spell it ?) by 2 – 1.

PS – some great memories of this fixture from the vintage days, chiefly the end of season clash in May ’72 when won 2 – 1 (that result again) to deprive Leeds of the double. Much controversy, much chaos & mayhem on that Molineux night of long ago…over 53000 in the ground. Incredible – and I was there.

It’s time for a truly radical move. An idea so simple, yet revolutionary, a concept that would please everyone concerned with the welfare of Wolverhampton Wanderers. It would be cheap, which would satisfy the two fatcats Morgy and Moxey, and more importantly it would be a winner with the players. Yes, it’s time Wolves had NO manager. Come on, would anyone really notice the difference?

It would be the ultimate in player power from the club that nurtured the player power practitioner extraordinaire, the mighty Doog himself. It’s a natural progression. The team could even be given a win bonus of a golden clipboard each, personally signed by our most successful manager of recent times – and if they lose they could each be beaten senseless with an Ipswich Town match programme, signed by Merlin himself.

    Up the Wolves.

Interesting to see all the PR coming from the club regarding the situation and where the blame should be placed etc, particularly the motivating video which I can only assume is in response to calls of boycotts or the idea that people just don’t want to pay for tickets to poor matches any more.

After a week of reading, debating, and thinking about where and why it’s all gone so bloody wrong. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a great team performance and a much needed win to get us all thinking about football again. Personally I’m over CEO’s and finance!
Wolves 3 Leeds 0 is my dream, I mean prediction.

I posted something here yesterday which was pulled. All I said on the subject of the “CEO” was that I wish I had balls the size of a certain Italian celebrity called Al!

Apparently Zele’s loan at MK Dons has been pulled and he’s back with us for the rest of the season. I wonder if this is of their doing or at our request. Maybe DS saw something in him, as Ben and Thomas did, the other night to suggest that he might have something to offer us this season, even if it is handled very carefully and it is just coming off the bench for 10 mins if we’re losing and desperate for a goal. The last twice we’ve been in this situation DS has brought David Davis off the bench so I’d be all in favour!

  61. No idea. They’re not exactly pulling up any trees at the moment so I’ll say 2-2.

  65. Just in the car on the way back from the game. Came down to surprise my dad outside the Molineux for his birthday. Unfortunately couldn’t get the result to make his day.

But did anyone else hear the post match interview with dean Saunders just on BBC WM? He made complete sense. He knows everything that’s wrong. Poor defence. Poor strikers. New players needed. He let slip “players that we can afford”.

Clearly he’s not being backed my Morgan. He knows what he needs. And he’s not getting the funds. Sounded completely frustrated.

Danny Batth was fantastic today. Should start every week. Doyle for me plays well out on the right. Sako should never have been tracking back for the penalty. Ward should have been there doing that. Ward can’t be our starting left back next week. Number one loan purchase is a new left back.

We have been saying for months and months are defense was shit and needed new players, while all the time danny baath couldnt get a game. He was brilliant for shef weds last year. Today was first time id watched him and, forget about the goal, he is head and shoulders better than any if our current defenders. Why has it taken 4 managers and so long for him to play. It is absolutely disgraceful. Well played Danny baath.

So Dean wants to stop letting in Goals but can’t afford any players. Simple. You’ve got Batth in … now pick Margreitter.

Can’t say l enjoyed the game . Two poor teams in my opinion . A point won at the death in obviously very important given it has kept us out of the drip zone tonight .
Hurrah for Danny Batth …very solid ..if only he
could have planted that chance to make it 2-0 .!!
That would have settled nerves , but a corker of a leveller !! .
Moxey said in answer to ‘where’s the money gone’ it’s out there on the pitch …well , l couldn’t see much of it..
A saddish long trek home once more ..oh well , Derby next week !! More wine please vicar …
