Wolves Vs Blackburn Rovers Preview

You can’t fail to notice the similarities between Wolves and Blackburn, particularly since the end of last season.

Jordan Rhodes

Both relegated from the Premiership. Both failing miserably to come to terms with life in the Championship. Both sacked their Norwegian managers in the last month.

It’s almost funny.

Blackburn have done well since disposing of Henning Berg, winning all three matches under caretaker boss Gary Bowyer.

As I write this, Michael Appleton is in for talks. That would be strange appointment all round. Why they’d want an unproven manager and why he’d push for the move are both baffling questions. If it does go ahead, I’ll wait with interest to hear what they say.

Despite the ongoing pantomime at Ewood Park, they retain a nucleus of good players and in Jordan Rhodes, a striker whose star continues to rise. He has 13 goals to date.

Rovers might be sitting just four points above us, but they’ve lost considerably fewer matches – 8 in total compared to Wolves’ 13. They’ve drawn 7 of their 13 away matches, easily the most in the league.

Wolves

Dean Saunders has been quick to make himself heard since arriving in town on Monday. His approach is in stark contrast to his predecessor but you can’t help be impressed by his feisty, no-nonsense attitude. Recent performances have smacked of ill-discipline and you sense he’ll kick that into touch.

The team he puts out tomorrow will be fascinating. I have no idea what he’ll do, so this is the team I’d put out:

Wolves team for Blackburn

Don’t know if Siggy is back yet and don’t know if O’Hara is fit enough, but we need more attacking intent, particularly at home. We never even looked like scoring against Ipswich.

Saunders has spoken about the importance of working as a team, so it will be interesting to see how he uses a maverick like Sako, if at all. Will others that have been out of favour get a look in?

Predictions

46 of you got the outcome correct against Palace, so it’s an avalanche of PL points for me to update. If less of you could get it right in this one, I’d be appreciative.

Well done to Exeter Wolf, Tettenhall Wolf, Ledbury Lupus, carl wolves, Raydewolf, mick the wolf and johnok who all got the 3-1 scoreline correct and doubled up. A single point for everyone else.

Pick a score, any score for this one.

Blackburn have done well of late, but we’re overdue a decent home performance and I think Saunders will get a response.

2-2.

Up The Wolves.

Team wise i hope he chooses the ones on merit and what he’s seen in the time he’s been here rather than names.

  3. Blackburn are having a good run. We’ve just failed to pose any threat against Luton. On that basis I’m saying a 2-0 Blackburn win.
I’d like to see Saunders shake up the team to that one you’ve picked Thomas.

  6. I hope he has a bit of a shake up maybe young Doherty in at right back, batth along side Johnson, midfield of pennant Davis Henry sako with Ohara just infront of them and siggy (if fit) up top. We’ve defended poorly recently so hopefully that make us a bit more solid through the middle and then ohara’s creativity further up the pitch, with siggy’s pace and movement might hopefully pose a few problems! I reckon cagey game, 1-1

    • I like that team line up. Pretty much what I’d put out. My only worry would be Siggy as a lone striker but he’s pretty creative. Definitely give him a chance to prove himself.

      Wonderful stuff!
The last time I did that (it was an opium cake but the same sort of shit) I ended up hugging a standing stone at Avebury which roared at me (in a very friendly manner) and promised to explain to me the meaning of existence.
      A real lost weekend.
I don’t think I’ve ever quite recovered from it. I still go back to Avebury on a regular basis but can never remember which stone it was.
And I certainly can’t remember what the meaning of existence was! (It wasn’t 42).
If you’re ever there, and see someone apparently trying to screw every stone in the circle it could well be me.

I’d play the young lad who laws on loan at Tranmere up front, as for Pennant I wouldn’t give him the job of washing the kit hasn’t done anything since he came here another just another club and another loan this must be his 7th or 8th time he’s been out on loan that says it all to me about his attitude and form dump him. I surpose Deano has to see the pretenders in action for himself to get a real idea of the scale of things so I dont expect to see any major changes I just hope if people don’t perform no matter who or how much they cost or are being paid he drops them and gives to kids a chance and Griffiths. As for the result I’m going to be positive and I think with Deno coming in and haunt a fresh start 2-1 to Wolves.

Irish and scottish players are linked to Wolves, and a Doncaster defender soon out of contract and Tuncliffe from Man U. So we’ve been linked with one striker, 2 defenders and one central midfielder. Very MM-ish on the transfer market Saunders. Not surprising given his traditional english approach to the game. I’m looking forward to get a glimpse of his tactical game when we are in possesion.

I would like to see Griffiths (or Doyle) up front with Siggy. Griffiths plays up front as a lone striker for hibs, and yet he manages to bang em in.

I agree with Griffiths as for Doyle he works hard and runs his socks off but there’s no end product he’s not a poacher and very rarely creats something out of nothing where as the lad that was on loan to Tranmere carnt remember his name buy all accounts is a bit of a poacher and also score a lot of his goals for Tranmere by creating chances for himself where’s as Doyle on the hole has to have them put on a plate for him the Goal against Bristol City apart but that’s just it for me Doyle doesn’t score enough goals or create enough goals he is and has always been a luxury for me and it’s one thing we carnt afford at the minute and that’s luxurys.

I would only say if the players don`t realise that this is their last chance saloon, and don`t give 110% to the cause and the new manager then they are going out the door. I don`t care who he picks because for the 11 players who start have to do it, and about f*****g time too. So 2-0 to my team Wolves.

I have been very much enthused by Dean Saunders messages this week, but then remember that it’ll be the same old players. I’m surprised you’d start with the same back four, but if we do play more positively, and the right back stops those crosses going (as Dean said, meaning left back) maybe we can have an instant improvement. After all we have played well at times this season.

  25. The stuff coming from Dean Saunders these past couple of days have been quite encouraging and very suggestive; particularly one rather long piece about discipline and an almost military mentality. Sounds like he wants to whip the lads into shape, which is exactly what they need – but hopefully they will also get some enthusiasm and passion along with discipline.
I’m hoping we’ll break out with power and rejuvenated passion, but that’s probably me being overly optimistic.

It will still be a battle, particularly against Blackburn, but come on Wolves – I’m predicting a 3-2 win.

  28. I hope there will be a buzz around molineux tomorrow night. If the players pick up this it may be a good performance, from a side I feel will be unchanged , or barely as Dean will wanna see what the normal starters are really made of. They will probably step up and the saga at the back will continue I fear. Mixed feelings about this one. Hoping for a win, but don’t want the wasters in the side to have a couple of good games and cement their place again. 2-1 wolves.

  29. I don’t think I like the appointment from what I heard. I don’t like this “army” run harder type of football, it is not the future, it is a recipe to repeat the MM way, which brought limited but ultimately unsustainable success. I enjoyed the MM years as much as anyone, but to go from MM to SS to MM mach 2 seems to make little sense.

Whilst Stale wasn’t going about it in the best of ways, I do think that to pick him as a ‘long term appointment’ and give him 6 months is a shame, a real shame. I think injuries ravaged us, we have put a lot in the bank since he arrived and his coherence after his dismissal is something we miss. I’d have liked him to rebuild the squad more than Saunders. That said, I suppose it is Steve Morgan’s money 10 000 001 pounds that bought the club so he is entitled to do what he wants (I fundamentally disagree with this notion but that is the system as it stands and I don’t think I’m in a position to change that here in Australia).

I don’t think we’ll win, perhaps lose 2-0. I hope we win, I hope Saunders is a success but I’m not sure what to think about the medium term future of the club.

We have no idea what team Deån will pick or what his tactics will be so this one’s a bit of a lottery – No change there then.
    I’m optimistic for several reasons:-
    1) We will almost certainly be returning to man marking and not zonal defence.
A much simpler form of defending to players of limited tactical ability and awareness.
There hopefully won’t be so much “he’s your man” “no he’s yours” – “OOOPS! 1-0 down.
    2) Ståle’s teams were basically not fit enough.
I don’t know if a week can have an effect but Saunders will want them running about and closing down the opposition. And he will limit the visits to McDonalds. This can only be a positive for everyone apart from junk food outlets.
Moxey will just have to eat more to make up for it.
    3) I have no problem with the use of the long ball if you have attackers who can feed off it. Everton and Man U have done it to great effect.
Deån has said that he will mix it up – that’s fine in my book.
I can’t think of a better sight than Bully racing on to a long through ball, defenders bouncing off him, and thumping one home.
We just need to find the next Steve Bull. I hope Deån will Cassidy and Griffiths a chance to see if they can fill their boots filling his boots.
    4) The crowd will be behind the team tonight and ‘The Honeymoon Period’ will start.
The lazy buggers have a chance to redeem themselves and I think they will all want to take it.
That’s why I’m going to forecast a Wolves win.
    3-1

    • Agree with all that you have said DOOGooder.
Many of Bully’s finest goals came from running onto long balls, and there were wo smashers wearing 3 Lions on his shirt.
With what we have now, and from what I have seen of Siggy, either at Wolves or on YouTube, he seems the most likely contender to fill those boots.
Youth, pace, strength, determination and fight. Hope he gets a shot at striker soon.
Players and crowd should be in better frames of mind.
Molineux might become an uplifting place under the floodlights for the first time in a while.
I also hope the Cheeky Welshman will draw a bigger crowd than of late.
Feeling good, and it’s streaming on line.
I’ll be sitting on my deck with a glass of wine, and just hope my neighbours get to hear me shout “Come on me babbies” a few times.

Very much looking forward to seeing how the players react to DS. I expect a win tonight so am going for 2-0 with SEB and Sako providing the goals.

    • If he plays Pennant instead of Sigurdarson and Davis instead of O’Hara then it’s just the same old tired team Ståle was playing. It definitely needs switching up.

O’Hara has to start for me. Even if it’s to play 60-70 minutes. His influence at Peterborough, Ipswich and Palace was incredibly apparent when he came on.

      • That’s the problem though – all he has is the same team Stale was playing. I would prefer O’Hara to start and I hope I am wrong. I am confident though that DS will have a big influence on the players and I expect their attitude to be so much better than it was under Stale. If they can get their heads right then they can move on and are more than capable of going on a winning streak.

    • Would rather see O’hara start and we gae a lead before he tires, than have to bring him on in a rescue bid.
Also think Siggy has far more than Pennant to offer. He’s gone soon, so will have no heart for it.

  40. Difficult one to predict really. Saunders hasn’ t had any time to make a real impact apart from enthusiasm and given the form we are in it will take more than that at this early stage. The team you suggest Thomas is based on experience, good thing in the circumstances, some will step up to the plate and some won’ t. So I’ m seeing a draw on this one 2-2.

  41. Managerial bounce – us to win 2-1 I’d say! Though I don’t think we should be carried away if we win this just the same as how it won’t be hopeless if we lose this – but it will be interesting to see how DS has Wolves playing when he’s only had less than a week with them!

To a back four who were already incompetent I think this is exactly what happened when Ståle bought in zonal marking. A lack of responsibility for goals and a lax attitude and we began our slide down the table.

Man Marking is simplier for defenders but it is also easy to defeat. Pull your front men wide, big gap down the middle. Decent attacking midfielder makes run to centre and o’hara watches him go. Job done.

    • The bad goals i have seen conceded this year in my mind come from poor positional play from our defence, and the backs espeically the left one getting skinned. They sure looked convinced but man for man does require some basics which i think we are lacking.

Remeber how much jarvis had to back track for Ward last year. I am not totally against Ward, he works hard and tries just is not a LB

2: Pace and good positional sense.

So I think we can safelt say was beyond our current guys.

  51. I know next to nothing about Saunders and it was interesting reading all the opinions – cheers! The players owe us all big time, let’s hope today is just the beginning.
    2-1 Wolves.

  52. Quite happy with appointment of DS. He’s served his managerial apprenticeship and no one in the game has a bad word to say about him. Like what he has said so far too.

Time to show it on the pitch. Will be interested to see his first 11. Hope they only get one chance to impress, cus they have already had enough chances and blown it.

Going for a hopeful Wolves 2 Blackburn 1

  55. Just came across a report that Pennant says he was signed on loan by Moxey not Stale.
    WTF??????

Our worst fears come true, probably explains Nouble too.

Put a stop to this Deano.

    Imagine the conversation:

Moxey: So Tony (Pullis) who will pay his wages while he is here.

    Pullis: We will pay 50/50.
    Moxey: OK signed

    • I fear this is a lot of the problem. Moxey buys (scrounges) the players, hands them to the Manager and says OK make him a Pre player

  57. Gonna be optimistic and go for a 2-2 draw. I think our new gaffer will have had a positive impact this week – but not enough for a win yet, I just hope we play better, I don’t think I could watch that shite again!

Going to wait and see what Deano does before I make any sort of judgement. Hopefully a cross between Mick and Stale. I really hope he doesn’t revert to Mick’s tactics but a move towards that end of the spectrum will probably help us get out of this league. Out of sheer optimism I’ll go for a 3-1 victory. Come on me babbies!!

So the teams in and the defensive change is Zubar at right back. Now Saunders says he likes players who work. Well Zubar is about the laziest player we’ve got so go figure that. Hopefully Foley will cover for him but if not then the defence is even worse than before.

Cassidy up front is a good call. Fans will like that. For me , well he’s a good league one player and perhaps this is the start of the planning for next season ?

    Wolves 1 – 3 Blackburn.

Positivity from me and backing for Saunders, given what he’s said this week.

The line up looks like a defensive 4-3-3 to me. Let’s see how they shape up.

Pleased Cassidy has been given a chance.

    Wolves 3 – 1 Blackburn

same old rubbish. Cassidy has done nothing. only 1 shot on target. Despair descends.

That was the way , pferd. Happy with the opening period , good energy . Also , heads didn’t drop after the poor pen decision . This is where we see how , or, if Saunders is the new way . Come on you wolves !!!

  66. Haywood Wolf says:

Yes better than what we have had lately, still some sloppy play – passes going missing, little off the ball movement when we have possession but with time and the new backroom staff here’s hoping we can work on this/tighten them up. Alternatively we can get shot of Ward who played one decent pass and misplaced too many. He is not a LB.

Stopping the rot has inspired a bit of cheer I feel!

  67. MMM to be honest not quite sure what to make of that. Looked very like last year.
We just dont get it done in the box, I agree lack of movement of the ball. Doyle does not look like scoring. Just where are our goals coming from. We just dont seem to have the basic skills.

An improvement on Solbakken but the inevitable conclusion is that there is no real top quality in our team and we showed very little up front again. My aspiration for this team for the rest of the season is to get the 6 wins required from the last 19 games to keep us in this division. Anything more than that and it’ll be well done, Dean, and let’s look forward to a massive clear out in the summer.

Agree with you . However I do feel that we have a few real quality players . O’Hara , Ikeme , Johnson , um errr ….tricky one . I really do rate Siggy , perhaps Peszko , Sako ? .Truth is , last years dross can more or less pack their bags . I did feel very proud and happy for young Cassidy . At least he got a chance at last to start . A great crowd reaction for him as well . Not the greatest of home debuts , but , Blackburn will be as hard as they get .
Saunders off to comeback point !! Bloody hard to be a positive Wolves fan eh ??

      Love you all …UTW

Agree with your summary. We lack enough quality.I think Saunders will just about keep us up with what is an extremely poor squad. At risk of repeating myself,we are in this position because of MMs’ policy of choosing hard workers over quality players.Come seasons’ end,a massive clear-out is required and a re-build needed.Probably need a couple of years minimum before we are again ready for the Prem.

  69. Support from the South bank was magnificent. I was level with the penalty looked a blatent dive. Blackburn typically full of gamesmanship. Cassidy struggled to make an impression which demonstrates why we cant just ditch all the first team players as some advocate. The 3 subs did make an impression and overall i was encouraged by the effort.

    Encouraging!

  71. I think we were better than the comments so far. Henry was MOM, I did’nt agree with that but he played well. David Davis was superb I thought. He held the ball well & always offered himself. We dominated midfield.

Peszko showed real pace & commitment when he came on, Cassidy was workmanlike but did’nt have the final trick to get a goal. I was pleased with all the players, they played well. We were higher up the pitch, we pressed the ball, causing Blackburn to go backwards which teams have made us do this season.

Very promising start & breath of fresh air after the awful dross seen under Solbakken. He just was’nt for Wolves, and I for one am mightly relieved he’s gone.

Zubar was subdued but it was good to see him back, Foley played a really good game on the right of midfield he nearly got a couple of goals. Sako first half careless and clumsy losing the ball but 2nd half was running at Blackburn & causing havoc. The guy in front of me said he’d like to see him play in the centre.

Would have loved a win, but this is great early shoots of a revival. Just a shame that our forward players don’t anticipate balls going into the box & get on the end of them. We’d score then & would’ve won this game.

Doyle received one cross in the box, 2nd half, wide right but he let it bounce off his shins. If he’d have got in the box earlier a goal was on the cards. Hope Deano works on that this week in training. 8/10. Well done, lots of promise.

  72. Play was a bit too predictable for me with no plan b or c. This style will only get us so far but pleased to see more effort from players – pity that has been lacking recently. We need to survive this season and there needs to be one hell of a clear out in the summer.

Slept on it and MM all over again. More effort and excitement but how far will this style of play get us? Will it get us into, and keep us in, the prem?
Guess Deano will have learnt a lot from this match.
