Record Signing Confirmed

It seems that Wolves have completed the signing of Kevin Doyle, which represents a massive coup for the club as they had to beat off competition from at least 3 established Premiership teams.

Kevin Doyle - Record £6 Million Signing

Kevin Doyle - Record £6 Million Signing

Anyone who read my last post on the matter will know that I predicted he would go to Fulham, so before the season has even started, I’ve got egg on my face.

What we have to think about now is how the Wolves attack will take shape in terms of the starting 11. I’d like to believe at home he’ll go with Doyle and SEB up top and Kites and Jarvis on the wings to really have a go at teams. I really thought Mick would go with a five man midfield with just SEB up top on his own. With Doyle on board though, I can’t imagine this will be the case.

Nice to have the option though! :)

However successful a signing Doyle turns out to be, I think it’s an important deal as it shows the fans that the club do have the ambition that they’ve spoken about since they secured promotion. £6 million is a huge outlay for Wolves, even at this moment in time and I’d really like to believe that this signals the start of a very serious assault on the Premiership.

What do you think about the signing? Have we paid over the odds or got a bargain? Will he even get in the team?

It’s difficult to judge whether Wolves have got a good deal here or not. His buy-out clause was reportedly 6.5 million and Reading were never going to sell for less, so 6.5 million was always going to be the fee required. Whilst he may only be worth, say 4 million, that is irrelevant as that figure was never going to be accepted. If he scores 10+ goals and we stay up it will be a great bit of business!

I believe, however, this is a real statement of ambition by the Wolves board, and will hopefully help convince other potential signings to join as well.

Can’t wait to see SEB and Doyle tearing Vidic and Ferdinand apart next season!!

Also, rumour on the grapevine (or the local Southampton paper as it’s otherwise known) is that Surman was having a medical at a Premiership club yesterday (maybe Wolves?!!). Regarding my earlier comment; only Huddlestone and Mancienne to go!

You’re right about the price Andrew. It was always going to be £6.5 million or nothing. However, I think that price is what put the likes of Everton and Villa off completing a deal, as they probably thought he was on the expensive side.

But for Wolves, we have to pay the money if we’re going to get anyone of any real quality.

I can see Surman signing for us, Mancienne is still unlikely and Huddlestone is a none-starter. If we sign all 3, I’ll buy you a half.

    That’s very generous of you!

Great signing. The sight of Sky Sports’ yellow scroll bar last night was a joy to behold. I almost shed a tear at their ‘breaking news’ as I’ve been imploring it to say something about the Wolves since we beat Doncaster!
That scroll bar told me one thing: We’ve arrived, and so the £6.5million seems almost secondary to the priceless feeling of showing some intent.
You could almost sense the excitement around the town today. Happy days.

As for Surman…Not seen much of him, but I am sure he has a good reputation for a reason. Maybe a more conservative alternative to Jarvis?
I’d like to know people’s thoughts on Big Chris. I bloody love him, and want him to stick around as I think he can have an impact. It would seem many rate Vokes above him, and even Keogh in some people’s eyes.
I can hear the worn out platitudes already…’Good old Chris, he’ll do a job for a Championship club’ etc etc.
Not a bit of it for me! I rate him and is the best big man down here since Dougan.
Maybe a thought for another time, as I am basking in this signing. Get in there!

PS, I could take or leave Mancienne. Not convinced.

@ Ben – I don’t know much about Surman, but for a cheeky £1 million, he might end up being a snip.

Wouldn’t like to see Big Chris leave. We need him and I don’t think he will be shipped out. More likely that Vokes or Keogh will be loaned out and that’s assuming Mick doesn’t decide he needs them all, which he might well do.

Controversial about Mancienne. I think the bloke is quality and something different to what we already have. I’d certainly take him if he’s available, but he’s not the finished article. The potential is there though.
