Middle of nowhere

Oh dear.

It’s so long to Frimpong then as the impressive Arsenal loanee limps back to London with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

First of all, let me say that’s a great shame because he was talented and a definite improvement on the central midfielders we have at the club.

Furthermore, it was undeniably a good piece of business on Mick’s part to bring the youngster here in the first place and his premature exit is certainly nobody’s fault.

Don't worry, it's over now

That said, it does leave us in a bit of a pickle.

The immediate question that sprung to my mind was: can we get Guedioura back from Forrest?

But then of course the answer to that is ‘no’ as he wasn’t named in our squad list that was submitted to the Premier League last week.

A squad list that contained only 24 senior players, 1 short of the maximum number allowed.

I would like to know (if the E&S can be bothered with some actual journalism) if Guedioura could have been named – despite being loaned out – in order to cover a situation such as this?

Either way though, the Algerian shouldn’t have been allowed to leave in the first place.

If we can name 25 players, we should name 25. Surely?

Only then can we give ourselves the absolute best chance of survival as the manager has the maximum number of senior pros to choose from.

That’s common sense isn’t it?

And Guedioura, for all his shortcomings and inconsistency that I fully accept, has without doubt proven he can effect a game of Premier League football.

I look back to the end of last season and even though he was patchy at best, he made the goal in the home draw against Fulham and was central to our 3-1 win over Albion.

So like him or loathe him, if you’re telling me he couldn’t at the very least have made an impact from the bench as we clamber for survival, I’d like to hear your justification.

Here’s another question: Why did we buy Jonnson?

The line we were fed by Jez Moxey is that ‘he’s one for the future’.

Excuse me?

One for the future?

We need players who can be good immediately and save us from impending doom, not in a year’s time when we’re scrapping for a play-off place in the Championship.

I could stomach the nonsense though if the player in question had any qualities that made me believe he will aid our cause.

Yet the only argument I seem to hear in his favour is ‘he’s neat and tidy and does the simple things’.

We’ve got plenty of those already thanks, including David Davies, a player who has also proved his worth in Scotland and wouldn’t have cost us a penny.

Maybe we’ll make do against the Albion on Sunday and maybe Henry will return wiser, O’Hara will get fitter and the likes of Edwards and Milijas will prove their worth.

But it won’t change the fact that these decisions are inexplicable.

I just hope we don’t live to rue them.

I think a midfield trio of Henry, O’Hara and Edwards/Milijas is good enough to get us out of it, it was last year until Doyle got injured and Mick panicked.

On Jonsson, I think people are being unfair. He is neat and tidy yes, but the difference is he does these passes quickly. While he isn’t brilliant, he covers very well for out of position players and is a decent back up. We have better players, but if it came to it but if needed he could ‘do a job’

My two questions to you mate:

Do you think Jonnson does anything that David Davis wouldn’t do?

      And:

If we assume that Jonnson isn’t going to start many games when the likes of Henry and O’Hara are fit (not in the squad Sat for example), who would you rather have on the bench – Jonnson or Guedioura?

      • Sheffieldwold says:

Firstly I think its a bit harsh on Jonsson to judge him after 3 performances. He was a a bargian bucket signing and IMO brought into to fill holes in the long term squad.
He can play as a defensive midfielder we only have KH as a natural in that role. Guedd just isn’t positionally aware enough and Foley is a better right back.
He can play at both fullback positions id rather see him at left back than Elokobi, but the again I’d rather see me at Left back than Elokobi!

Davis is a different matter, id like to see him recalled to fill in now Frimpongs out he wouldn’t need a squad number because of his age.

As for Guedd he’s just to inconsistent yes he’s got a decent drive and shot, but he’s crap at positioning (losing his man all the time) and he fails at short passing. Hopefully the spell at Forest will give ham a chance to build up his confidence and fitness and he’ll come back a better player, if not he can go. He isn’t as good as O’hara, Edwards in the just behind the front man role, isn’t good enough in possession to play as a creative midfielder and gets caught out to much when tracking back to be good enough as a defensive midfielder. He’s an impact substitute at best and at worst he’s a liability.

        1) I haven’t seen much of Davis to have an opinion of him. I watched him for Chesterfield the other night, he had the right ideas but being a lower league team they didn’t really seem to suit his style. He did seem a bit rash, but as I said that is pretty much all I have seen of him.

        2) The problem is, that if Henry were to get injured or suspended we have no proper cover for him (Foley needs to stay at right back for me), which is were Jonsson fills in. If it comes to who I want as back up, I’d like Jonsson to be someone we have to turn to, as with Guedioura I don’t feel safe with, he’s a liability. Has potential but his decision making is often shocking, he tries ridiculous goals and he isn’t really a team player.

The signing of Eggert Jonsson gets more baffling the more I think about it. The fact Hearts fans were bemused by it tells you all you need to know. This isn’t a 17 year old kid, he’s played an awful lot of games.

Moxey often points to the difficulty of signing players that are better than what we already have, then we sign this guy? It just doesn’t make any sense. It really is a kick in the balls for our young players as well, if we haven’t got any midfielders coming through that are at least as good as Jonsson, we may as well close the academy down.

Also – why is Mick against signing foreign players, but willing to sign one who’s played in Scotland? Is he in some way suggesting the playing in the SPL is adequate preparation for the EPL?? Look how long it took for Berra to reach a remotely acceptable level of performance, Scottish football is generally sh*t, but Mick prefers players who’ve played there to those from Germany, France, Spain, Italy etc

What does Mick know about Scottish football that we don’t? He must know something!

The adelene saga just seems like a bad decision all over. Surely you can put him in the squad and most loan deals have a clause where if necessary you can recall the player. What happens if we lose jarvis and o’hara through a couple of small injuries. or any players for that matter, mick will start plugging gaps with random players when adelene could have slotted right in.

  6. Sheffieldwold says:

Yes agreed. I may be wrong but I thought you were allowed to sign players and name them in your squad as long as they were unattached i.e McFadden and Bent. Surely that must count for recalling loan players?

But after the elation of a win (albeit a lucky win), this is a massive blow. Were denied the best midfielder we’ve had in a long while. Hope he recovers well and gets to show the touch of class he’s got.

As for us 451 (with two natural attacking wingers!) and come back Karl your services are required again.

Says it all really, our management’s inability to count.
Actually, what really has happened is that Ward is being fed exclusively on spinach, ala Popeye, and McConnor’s thinking is that it don’t matter who gets injured, SuperWard will slot in place seamlessly!
Therefore why waste wages on a 25th player, when Wardy will save the day….again.

Regardless of who’s in the squad, or who will play where, the only chance we have of avoiding relegation this year is if the form of the 5 teams around us continues it’s malaise or gets even worse. Unfortnately all those squads, with the exception of Wigan and Blackburn, have better squads than us and managers who are maor than capable. Owen Coyle will turn Bolton around, the stripey lot should be ok, QPR are capable of pulling away with their strike force, although I think they will get worse before they get better – and remember they played us off the park with 11 men home and away!

McCarthy does not have the tactical astuteness for this league. We survived both seasons before, not because of how we played but because of how badly others played. This year I fear we will be caught out – in fact we already have been.

Next season, regardless of where we ar, we need a big change – McCarthy and his whole coaching team need replacing. Until that happens, we could have Barcelona’s squad playing for us and we’d still be relegation fodder.

Our transfer window non loan signings included a £2m restaurant in the new stand, (although surely there was dining capacity in the plans already), and an £800k Icelandic international, who looks as much use as an Iceland store when everyone in the premiership shops at John Lewis. This when even bottom of the table Wigan sign that Chilean winger who embarrassed our team in the FA Cup games against the Blues and cost around £3 or £4m or so, and even Bolton sign one for the future from Watford for around the same fee.
Whats that saying – something about paying peanuts and getting monkeys.
We don`t need neat and tidy players aged 24, we needed players with the pace and athleticism to play in the premiership right now. Why sign anybody at any price if they are not better than the players already at the club, its a complete resource waste. If Moxey wants to save some money, he needn`t bother putting the seats in the top tier of the new stand, if we are in the championship next season, can`t see us needing them.
And Moxey was supposed to be gutted we lost out on a stellar signing in the final hours of the transfer window, yet now it seems that was the chap from Spurs. Nice to have him but this was a loan – not a purchase, even if we survive this season, its very unlikely that he will be here next year, Frimpong certainly won`t be.
I`ll be there Sunday, wouldn`t miss this one, but can`t help feeling that the 3 M`s couldn`t organise a piss up in a brewery.

Wow that is horrible news. Frimpong did really well in the few games he played, should do well in Arsenal long-term.

About us only having 24 in the squad – I think people tends to glorify Adlene. He is a “good” player, he can shoot and run, but he’s a liability and almost every chance he gets at premiership football he shows us why he’s not in the starting eleven. He does not at all fit in the Henry role as he is pretty much all offense, so if he was going to get subbed in it would be to replace O’Hara, Doyle or Edwards which are all arguably fighting over the same positions, so there is already three healthy players he would have to outperform, and that’s not even counting Milijas.

I could see him fit into out team either in a midfield trio with Henry and O’Hara (with two wingers and Fletch on top), or in a 4-4-2 just with O’Hara or Henry, but regardless. he won’t get any better without match training. I think he can pull a Kightly, do some magic in the championship and then return with confidence and new attributes. Mick isn’t playing him right now anyway, so why would you want him to stick around?

God forbid we have a player who actually knows where the opposition’s goal is, and actually tries to stick the ball in there!!!
We certainly don’t need another Henry….one is bad enough.
And why, pray, does it have to be Adelene who makes up the 25 man squad? Are there not a few players up and down the country who wouldn’t mind kicking a ball around for us?
      24 is lunacy.

I actually disagree here, gebb. To me O’Hara can’t fill the offensive midfield role. He was not in the game at all in the first half against QPR and only when he was played deeper, did he start doing well.

We need his passing skills deeper in the midfield as well since Henry is completely useless in setting up an attack and Edwards can’t create anything either. The back four tend to hoof the ball towards Fletcher if they can’t pass it to a player who can do something with it. And Henry and Edwards would just give it away.

So Guedioura could be used to rotate with Edwards in the offensive midfielder role in a 4-5-1. 4-4-2 is a no go going forward. Without Frimpong, I don’t think we have the players to play a 4-4-2 without Frimpong. The midfield would the consist of Henry and O’Hara and Henry is simply not quick enough at closing opponents down and he is not good enough with the ball to work only along with O’Hara.

On the ability ‘to pull of a Kightly’ I can’t see that as a positive thing. Kightly has done nothing in the PL apart from a good 45 minutes agains Villa that promised a lot but he was useless agains Liverpool. Kites still needs to prove that he is a PL player.

Brilliant in the Championship but from what we have seen so far not good enough for the PL. And now he is injured again…

Terrible news. We’re going to need some luck with injuries now. I still think we have a starting 11 that’s decent enough to keep us in the premiership. But as with all of the teams in the bottom half of the division. We haven’t got the squad depth to deal with the unfortunate scenarios football throws at us.

QPR was a ray of hope though. We can definitely do it.

Losing Manny is a big blow. I hope his recovery goes well.

Why Jonsson? A good question! Not Premiership quality.

Geudioura is at best an impact player, like Hammill.

Milijas is more a liability than an asset. Passing record is poor, doesn’t track players, lacks pace.

Henry our defensive player? His tackling record is poor, he doesn’t mark or track players.

Edwards has a great motor but has poor technique (control, passing, shooting, heading) and doesn’t tackle.

My solution; play O’Hara ,David Davis, Doyle, Fletcher, Kightly (if fit) or Foley (hurry back Zubes!).

Justifying the Jonsson signing as a ‘squad signing’ is bullshit.
Our midfield was dreadful for the first half of the season. Therefore we needed to buy BETTER players not ones that are worse.
You buy a better player and then Karl Henry becomes a squad player, not sign someone to sit on the bench behind him.
Fair enough if he was 18 but he’s not. If the player is no better then even if he was only 200k, Moxey might as well have spent it on hair grease.
If we couldn’t afford a better player then you play a kid. Simple.

    • Sheffieldwold says:

He looks the real deal to be fair, strong, skillful and relatively pacey and with an eye for goal. He has been linked with a few sides and West Ham put a bid in for him during the transfer window around the £2million mark but it was rejected. Huddersfield wanted £5-6million and an arrangement that he could continue to play for them until the end of the season. Huddersfield aren’t a selling club as they are the money bags club of League 1 at the moment and are still chasing second place, so really it’s up to the player to request a transfer and he’s said he’s happy where he is for now.

Could be a good signing if we go down and lose Fletch but otherwise a bit pricey to take a risk on at this level when you consider the price that was paid for Zamora and Saha who are proven goal scorers at our level.

For a start we’re far from assured of staying in the division which i think would have a very, very large bearing on who signs or not.

If we can be ‘linked’ to him now then why not make a move in January…it’s bollocks.

      • Sheffieldwold says:

To be fair it is paper talk but the papers up here were mentioning him being a possible target for Wolves, West Brom, West Ham, Southampton, Wigan and Blackburn in January. Of those only West Ham put a bid in which was rejected and most were related to other players leaving (i.e: Fletch to Liverpool Rhodes in as replacement). So it’s late paper talk.

If Wolves are interested he is a very good prospect his form is phenomenal at the moment He also banged a few in in Scotland previously so he has history as a proper goal scorer. Problem is from what I’ve seen he’s got all the attributes to be another Ebanks-blake, Chopra or Nugent, brilliant at lower levels but can’t hit a barn door in the prem.

Like I said if the worst happens and we drop down a division I wouldn’t mind us taking a punt on him if the likes of Fletch and Doyle went.

Maybe I was a bit harsh on ebanks but I see him as an out and out goal scorer and fletcher is just more effective in that role. Ebanks is too hit and miss to be a solid first teamer. That’s the risk you take with bringing strikers through from lower divisions.

Doyle for me is a creative striker more attuned for playing wide or in the hole behind an out and out striker.

I do see yours point though that we need a smart midfielder connecting defense to offense so we don’t just hoof the ball, as you say.

I agree that Guedioura “could” be used in the offensive midfielder role. It just doesn’t look like he’s gonna get the opportunity to play regularly and develop, so he might as well develop in Nottingham Forest and come back a better player.

By pulling a Kightly I was mostly referring to actually impressing in a championship loan deal. As someone else pointed out when he came back, how many of our players would actually be able to do that? I would think Doyle, Fletch, O’Hara, Jarvis and Guedioura, in addition to Kightly, are of the few offensive players we have that could actually singlehandedly improve a struggling team. Besides, Villa wasn’t his only good game since he came back. Vs Tottenham he played well, and ran the longest of everyone on the pitch which says something about his level of fitness. Vs Aston Villa he played extremely well the first half, and though he disappeared somewhat the second half he was still my man of the match easily. Besides, Aston Villa had to sub one of their backs just to deal with him, how often does that happen with Wolves? Vs Liverpool he wasn’t amazing, but though he only played 60 minutes he still created our biggest chance. Besides, he was running against Jose Enrique. I don’t hear anyone knocking Jarvis for not beating Johnson more, even if he is half the back Enrique is.

Kightly takes the pressure of Jarvis. I think he could prove important for the rest of our season, given that he stops getting injured…

Clive it’s another Poxey spin-he thinks will please us. Mick has sent his spies-it’s an affront to our
    intelligence-again. £4.5m warchest blah,blah,blah.
It’s only Tuesday and I am already bored with p,ayers mouthing off about Sunday. Shut up and work on a plan that can beat the shits and compensate from losing Frimpong. All players need to show his enthusiasm for the fight.
Good news the roofs on the new stand and means North Bankers will be dry. New restaurant will be serving soon! Things are looking up.

It’s going to be interesting to see what team MM puts out on Sunday.
I’d like to see a 4-3-3 again and really get in their faces, which can turn into 4-5-1 if we’re winning by a few goals. I think the team really picks itself for the weekend though, Doyler has to start on the right, then we only have JOH, Edwards, Jonnson and Milijas as options for the middle, my bet is Milijas is a sub.

I’m looking forward to the game and I’m hoping Saturdays fixtures go our way (although I’m not entirely sure how I want them to go….)

    Blackburn vs QPR
    Bolton vs Wigan

Wigan beat Bolton and Blackburn draw with QPR then we stay out the bottom 3 but WIgan close the gap… Blackburn win they move on the same points as us, Bolton win they go above us. I guess the best would be for Wigan and Blackburn to win, then us to beat scum so we’re 3 points ahead of Blackburn and QPR, 4 ahead of Bolton and 5 Wigan…

It makes it more of a must win really!

Morning young Putney, how is your Dad?
I haven’t spoken with him since he was half way back from the Mol last Tuesday.
Hope he’s not committed hairy carey in deep dark despair!!!
In response to your blog, aren’t they all “must wins”??
When Houston finally got a “football” (throwball) team 10 years ago, the only thing the new fans were worried about was beating The Dallas Cowboys, the nearest rivals. They had signs up saying things like ” We don’t care if we go 1 – 15, beat The Cowboys”
Of course, they don’t have to worry about minor details such as relegation over here, so
league positions are not an issue.
Our league position is an issue, but form still should go out of the window, and the players should be made well aware how big a fixture this is.
It was reported fairly recently that the black country derby is the BIGGEST local rivalry in the country, possibly in the whole of Europe.
So, on that note, a huge FUCK OFF W… B… to all tesco’s of the world!!!!
      and of course,
      FOMM
      Have a nice day.

The last time I spoke to him was when I sang down the phone to him after the QPR game…. he seemed in good spirits then!

I don’t think all games are must wins, we should be trying our best to win every game but the consequences of losing some games are different to others. The dirt is a must win for every reason (which you’d hope MM would be using to motivate the players!).

I’d like to see one thing on TC’s clipboard on Sunday “get into them, f*ck them up!”.

What’s funny is that two years ago everyone was complaining that we’d signed an unknown Algerian centre midfielder on loan, instead of Premier League experienced players, and now everyone wants him in the team/squad.

I would say that this is down to three things. First, he actually turned out to be a quite good, unknown Algerian midfielder. And second, the alternatives are still the same players that took us out of the Championship. And they are not very good. Last, G-man in the squad is better than no man at all.
