Wolves 2 Villa 3

In the end, it was a picture that only the three M’s could have imagined, let alone painted.

Beneath the glare of the biggest of white elephants the team in white won, inspired by a home grown hero whose local rivals now call their own.

One team playing in the Premier League while the other plays in a parallel world altogether, losing for the umpteenth time on the pitch as the most feckless building project of all is shelved in favour of 50 odd houses off it.

Only Wolves could cobble together such a script, featuring a fabricated line about Compton progression, when our very own manager steadfastly objects to the very notion in the first place.

Not Mark Davies for example, who was leap-frogging Bolton above us with a man-of-the-match display at the Reebok, instead of maintaining our momentum once Frimpong departed.

If it wasn’t so chronically sad we’d all laugh.

Darren Bent tells us how many stands will be built at Molineux

But when a current board member boasts about signing off the North Bank redevelopment three days before the last day of last season, we really shouldn’t be surprised.

A monstrosity of a stand which Jez Moxey said would look ‘ridiculous’ to begin with and a team which Steve Morgan, ‘with a crystal ball, might have strengthened.’

Talk about planning.

The biggest irony of all was that for a 30 minute spell, we looked as good as we have all season, on the day we plunged to 19th position.

Michael Kightly proved why the club has stayed patient over his injury lay-off for so long, terrorising Villa and scoring a wonderful goal to partly erase the memory of Berra’s early indecision for the penalty.

The wonderfully mobile Frimpong exuded confidence and talent, controlling the midfield with Henry with right back Kevin Foley reminding us why he won a player of the year award as a right back. Funny that.

We thoroughly deserved a 2-1 lead at the break through Edwards’ flick from Johnson’s header and if anything, will regret profligacy for not being at least 4-1 ahead instead.

Both Fletcher and Edwards shot tamely at Given beforehand, when a yard either side would have yielded more joy.

But in a game of two halves, Wolves failed to reappear after the break and either looked slow out of the blocks, or just bereft of experience in actually defending a lead.

Keane’s equaliser underlined two things:

  1. Our chronic inability to keep the ball, this time underlined by Matt Jarvis
  2. Wayne Hennessey’s not-so-happy knack at conceding long range goals, later admitting he was to blame for this one

From then on the wheels came off and a game that we previously looked in control of took a turn for the worse when Frimpong was stretchered off.

With Stephen Warnock already brought on for Agbonlahor to specifically shackle Kightly, we suddenly looked laboured.

And when referee Michaal Oliver gleefully sent off Henry after first impeding a quick free kick and then ignoring a 5 second Albrighton offence, you sensed the game was heading one way.

That our very own Robbie Keane confirmed such a thought was either cruel beyond compare, or just rewards for a club with warped priorities.

With Blues beating us in the cup, our stadium redevelopment shelved and a housing development taking preference, Mick McCarthy could have been talking about the last seven days as a Wolves fan instead of these painful 90 minutes.

“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong.”

Heartbreaking after a stunning first half. To bad Henry is suspended. The team today looked really strong. The suspension of Henry is very unfortunate. I don’t know how long time it takes before O’Hara returns to his old self. O’Hara, Frimpong and Edwards sounds like a terrific constellation though. Edwards deserves credit for his hard work, mobility and initiatives. He is far more dangerous than Doyle. And Frimpong only plays better and better – hopefully he’ll play in the next match. I chose to remember the positives of today match. Todays match where ruined by the abscence of two of our best midfielders.

Trouble is Karlir, they don’t look strong for 90 minutes. We are a team that only plays one half and the half we don’t play is when we concede and ultimately lose the game.

What struck me was how we were completely unable to win any headers, or second or even third balls in the second half. We just stopped playing. Terrible second half performance ruined a stellar first half.

Whether I lose my head over all this or not is based on how serious Frimpong’s injury is, because he has brought something great to this club, and could be the deciding factor in keeping us up… but still, I still can’t believe that we lost after that first half! What the f**k happened there?

For the first time this season, I think there’s more chance of our relegation than safety, but that’s not to say there’s no hope! What we need is for 45 minutes of brilliant play to stretch into 90 minutes, and I doubt Moxey is going to sack Mick so Mick is the one who has to drill this into the team! I am not going on a witch-hunt on Mick, but to be honest if he was to be replaced I wouldn’t be heartbroken! It could well be that Wolves need a fresh start under a new manager…

The 3-0 defeat to Bolton last season was horrible, but we survived. Here’s hoping…

Just seen the Berra incident again as I thought I missed something this afternoon. Berra was slow and attempting to play ball when Bent went across him. Very unfair decision yet again.
Deciding kick of the match was not Keane it was Petrov on Frimpong. Went to pieces after that. Read comments about Mark Davies and very much agree.

Unfair decision? Clearest penalty I’ve ever seen.

Sure was tragic losing a game like this. I’ll try to remember the positives – Kightly and Frimpong. Even though wolves looked lackluster in the second half Aston Villa didn’t have that many chances. This could easily have swayed our way

      • bemused wolf says:

gebb the point i am making is that Berra was attempting to clear the ball as Bent came steaming in and caught him instead. So please explain the difference with Petrov kicking Frimpong in the head after the ball had gone.

Well both of them should obviously have been penalties, I’m just not that surprised they didn’t see the kick on Frimpong. To be honest I didn’t see it myself before fifth replay.

Things went horribly wrong. Key thing is now to change like for like and not do what MM sometimes does and try and move everything around to accommodate his favourites. Stick with 4-5-1 and if Frimpong is ok then it’s either milijas, gued or Jonnson in for Henry. Must keep Foley-kites and Ward-Jarvis partnerships. However I fear one of the hapless Stearman or elokobi will be brought in and probably foley shifted into midfield. We have seen McMUPPET do it time and time again. It will ultimately relegate us.

  9. Rob in London says:

A brilliant first-half followed by an abject second of ponderous, clueless football. Losing Frimpong clearly had an impact, but it doesn’t matter who’s on the pitch if we can’t play for 90 minutes. Our inability to retain possession has cost us yet again. I could finish this by calling for Mick’s head, but Morgan clearly seems incapable of, or unwilling to, make a bold decision. No point getting angry now – we just have to accept this team is heading back to the Championship.

Really enjoyable first half, first time in a long time that we’ve played that well going forward at any point in any game.

How does kicking someone in the face in the six yard box, after the ball has been won by the player you’re kicking not result in you conceding a penalty???????? I can’t believe no commentator even mentioned it in passing (even thought the one I was listening to, Trevor Francis, has an obvious loathing of all things Wolves).

Henry was stupid but, why wasn’t it our free kick anyway, the ref had already blown for a free kick on Henry?????

If Frimgpong isn’t out for long, O’Hara comes back strong and Kightly plays like that we might just be OK, that is if no more shit decisions go against us.

Too right Colin, makes me sick to watch these players rolling around constantly watching the ref to see what card they are giving and low and behold they are up seconds later either due to the getting the decision they wanted or complaining at the ref. I have counted 9 points so far this term where we have had dodgy refereeing decisions but the problem is we do not question them enough. All managers do it and most players do it too for example when larsson didnt get a corner today he went mental at linesman then they later got one when it was a goal kick.

Liverpool at Anfield 1-1 Carroll pushes Johnson over (foul) not given Lpool score and win 2-1 (1point)

Newcastle at molineux 2-0 Ref fails to give penalty when O’hara is fouled in the box, disallows doyles goal in remaining seconds Newcastle win 2-1 (3 points if penalty was scored)

Stoke Woodgate should have been sent off for penalty 1-0 roger johnson doesnt commit a foul and Stoke score win 1-2 (1point)

Norwich Fletcher scores last minute to be ruled offside when it was debatable drew 2-2 (2points)

Villa today Should have been a penalty and sending off when petrov kicks frimpong in face 3-1 we were cruising and they would have had 10 men lose 3-2 (3points)

So instead of 9 we are 10 points debatable off where we should be down to referees decisions alone. I for one am sick of it and if decisions really do evenn themselves out over a season then be expecting a lot of good goals to be ruled out and penalty kicks not given to our opponents. HANG ON NO IT WON’T BECAUSE ITS WOLVES!!!

Today really was the tipping point for me as a fan. Whilst at work I kept up to date up until the 25th minute when I was able to access a computer in order to watch the game. First off, Frimpong should be out for up to three months. Should that challenge not only resulted in a penalty but also a red card as he got nothing of the ball and denied Frimpong of a clear goalscoring opportunity. Secondly, Henry what was he playing at yes Albrighton obstructed him but was there any need to lash out and kick. Finally what has Mick said to the players at half time because it looked like a complete different mindset. Not getting in the faces of villa and just letting them come at us was plain stupid as Darren Bent and Robbie Keane are as good as anybody on their day as proven with the two fluky goals.

On a positive note seeing kightly on the scoresheet once more must have lifted everyones spirits he looks as if he is finally getting there. He tore Clark a new one today and just ran at the Villa defence all day long. The back line is looking stronger, nothing could be done about penalty even though it was mainly berra’s fault for dawdling and Robbies strikes were just from another planet. Why o why did we not move for him? Also he was booed off by a section of supporters today why? He cherishes the club that we support and never ever celebrates when he scores.

Read earlier that frimpong could be out for up to three months and O’Hara is hoping to be back for lpool game who will be smarting from Bolton today. Today was a good chance to try and put the pressure on those who are behind us but now we are the ones who are doing the chasing. Some changes have got to be made and in order to get targets in get rid of some of the dead wood. Elokobi, Hunt, Keogh, Vokes.

If Mick can get them to play like they did in the first half against Liverpool no matter what the outcome I will be cheering the lads on and they didnt half look stretched today. Going to need some big performances from the lads to propel us up the league.

The squad sheet looked great before kick off. Really fancied our chances.
We go a goal down, then a miracle happens. We show strength, balance and flair. Kightly looks like the player we all know he can be, Frimpong is amazing, Henry, surrounded by good
players, passes the ball well with a little more space. 2 – 1 up, i am singing and dancing, i have been waiting for a long time or this. Then the whistle blows.

    Second Half.
Frimpong – the key to our midfield, been with us a few seconds, is out for 3 months with a fractured cheekbone.
Henry responds to blatant wrestling with an annoyed back heel, red card deserved. I thought you were a bit more street savvie than that Karl. Out for 3 games.
19th in the table with our 2 main defensive midfielders gone, and a manager who i am scared of the team he may now pick.

The biggest surprise is that our descent into the relegation zone has acted like smelling salts to some, when we’ve all been screaming in fear of a scenario like this for weeks.
Despite all this gusto about ‘business acumen’ and long term strategy by the 3 Ms, we have been exposed as a clueless, amateurish club, who place more significance on spin and cement as it does progressing the club.
And if Morgan dares reply with a ‘well Ive given Mick 45m net’s then more shame on you for not sacking him and saving this disgusting season.
Passive, smug silence and everyone hates it, bar the 3 Ms themselves.

    Great stuff Ben.
I predicted a defeat based on the premesis that as soon as hopes are raised as they were at Spurs, the next game is another huge disappointment. Normally this is due to strange team selection and tactics and a woeful performance. This defeat was even more painful because none of that was the case and in the first half we were excellent with Frimpong showing what class can do that huff and puff by a bunch of good lads patently can’t.
And we managed to throw it all away. Frimpong’s injury (giving Petrov the benefit of doubt) was bad luck but the rest was self inflicted. Jarvis’s clearance was as inaccurate as, and much more dangerous than, his crosses, Johnson headed in to the danger area and Hennessy admitted he should have done better.
Henry was silly and naive and the gift was gleefully accepted by that cheating little turd.
Whatever the circumstances, the pattern continues. Nothing to cheer for weeks, hopes suddenly raised followed by huge disappointment.
Season tickets should have a printed warning,
BEING A WOLVES SUPPORTER IS BAD FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.

We didn’t deserve to lose and for once I agree with Mick that everything seemed to conspire against us, although you can’t excuse the Henry red card. So obvious we are going down, let’s just get on with it. We can then rebuild under a new manager, while watching our best players do their thing for other clubs, including Kightly ironically.

But don’t worry, we’ll still have Karl Henry…

As soon as i heard milijas was coming on i knew we would lose. We just dont have enough players to dilute THAT MUCH DROSS … What this all comes down to of course, is that we are pinning all our hopes on ONE ARSENAL YOUNGSTER, cos the muppet has been unable to recruit one for ourselves. it was frimpongs distribution that allowed jarvo and kights to menace in the first half, when he went we looked absolutely lifeless. as we have most of the season. How do we pick ourselves up from this, and the inevitable disappointment of the next and the next, when we all know how to solve this problem with one simple p45.

I’d like to know what happened in the dressing room at half time.
    We looked a different team.
There was a 20 minute period when we played the best football I’ve seen us play in the Premiership.
It goes to show what a forward thinking midfielder , (Frimpong), can do.
Also Kightly was on fire and firing up everyone else in the team, but the spark was not there after 45 minutes…
At half time something must have been said, that deflated our enthusiasm as a team…
As it stands we will go down.
Perhaps with Frimpong say only missing one game and Kightly and Jarvis firing on all cylinders we might have a chance, with someone other than MM at the helm. However we are playing catch up.
Our ineffectual chairman, more concerned with his building business than the Football Club, is a reincarnation of the Bhatti Brothers.
He should have acted when it was obvious we needed a new manager.
Miracles can happen, but my £20 bet that we would go down at 5-2 some months back is no compensation, for next year in the championship and yet another rebuilding (the team that is) process….

The silence from the happy clappers in deafening, but no doubt you’re out there somewhere waiting for us to draw with Wigan or somebody equally as shit. I blame you as much as i blame the 3M’s if we’d all pulled together when it was blatantly obvious that mcdickwad should have gone, we’d be long rid and not having to suffer the utter utter shite we have seen over the past couple of years.

What, on forums and blogs such as this? It’d make no difference whether we all pulled together online – we’d need protests on the scale of the Blackburn fans, and that isn’t working, is it?

Maybe I should blame the so-called ‘numpties’ for not actively protesting for Mick’s dismissal – it’s the same sort of logic!

Just to try and provide a little balance i will pretend to be a happy crapper – got no problem with getting in a better manager but i looked through a list of clubs that have been in the Prem all of whom have changed there managers many times and most of whom have gone from bad to worse.

        Barnsley,Blackpool,Bradford,Burnley,Charlton,Coventry,Crystal Palace,Derby,Hull,Ipswich,Leeds,Leicester,Middlesborough,Forest,Oldham,Portsmouth,Reading,Sheff Utd,Sheff Wed,Southampton,Swindon,Watford,West Ham,Wimbledon.

        forgot Birmingham.

Colin. How about Pardew for Hughton? Hodgson for Di Matteo? O’Neill for Bruce? Hughes for Warnock?

Yes it can be done but if you get it wrong can be dire – agree with Hamlet blogs are an enjoyable free for all that probably doesnt directly effect the running of the club.

its called living in a civilised world where the freedom of speech is not only allowed but actively encouraged. Also aren’t you shooting me down for having a different opinon to you – ironic!

No I’m not, and I didn’t actually say anything about Mick’s position in my last post – of course people are going to want MM out, just look at where we are! I’ve no problem with you saying you want a new manager, but I do have a problem with the implication that those who have decided to get behind him and the club are mindless idiots (dare I use that term) who are dragging the club down!

People say the same about the more negative Wolves fans – that they’re dragging the club down – and they’re just as wrong! I’ll repeat my point – nothing anyone says on forums and blogs like these will have any impact on what goes on at the club.

After all said and done the only way we can make morgan listen is to protest,i think we have
been to patient with the way our club is being run or not run,Morgan would get more respect
if he sacked him now rather than wait until its really to late, with McIdiot we’ll surely go down
but with somebody else we may have an outside chance of staying up.we need to really invest
in a decent manager with a good knowledge of how to play the beautiful game. all that money
morgan gave him 49.mil has been wasted in buying mediocre players.what was said at halftime god only knows but the secondhalf we where awful.he can’t keep blaming it on bad
luck it ain’t. so the sooner he goes the sooner we’ll be seeing more of what we saw in the firsthalf, then we’ll fly up to safety.FOMM.

The best 35 minutes of football I`ve seen Wolves play in the premiership. Should have been out of sight by half time, but Berra is an accident waiting to happen, and we just don`t have the quality to make the most of those half chances.
I haven`t felt this despondent for years about my football club. As you say Ben, watching my namesake score a super goal for Bolton on MOD, what damage has MM done, and how long will we take to recover from his tenure when it is over. I can`t see us winning another game this season, and we won`t have a keeper helping us like the Baggies had at the weekend.FOMM.

If, When, Why, But, Bullshit! The excuses have run out, and I fear its too late. The 3 Morons are taking us down to midtable Championship, The couple of real Premier League players will be sold for profit. What do we expect with the 3 Stoogies in charge – Miser, Muddled & Misguided, any line of business cannot flourish with idiots at the helm. I feel sorry for the loyal following getting ripped off for their hard earned cash.
How about a real incentive, no win no pay?
