Hallam. Gibbs is the only defender metiond in the loan stakes, and he will be a future England player almost garenteed so can’t understand why he would be such a bad loan deal.

andrew has a good point, midfield is strong at the moment although I do think we need an extra player to make us that little bit better and so much of Premier League football is played in the centre of the park I can understand why.

But our defense is still weak. No matter what way you look at it. Right back is sorted it’s just the other 3 positions. With only one centre back signed this summer I can see us leaking goal after goal.

And loaning defenders from Arsenal? Got to be kidding, Wenger hasn’t a clue at the moment.

Andrew, no need to extract the michael now!! Jones was good though. I’m a fan anyway, but he looked particularly sharp, and leaner. Centre half is a must, and a left back. The centre back position has been a problem for a good three years now, and one that looks to be some way from being solved.

Interesting to read so many posts calling for more central midfielders. I was under the impression this was one of our best strengthened areas; Milijas, Henry, Surman, Edwards. And according to Ben’s vivid and informative description of the Valladolid match (!), it looks like Dave Jones may be forcing his way back into contention as well.

Whilst the names mentioned are all talented, signing a number of players for one position means those who fought so hard to get us to where we are will be sat on the bench, or dropped completely. This may affect team morale.

My personal opinion is we only need another couple of defenders. Would be happy with Mancienne, and maybe somebody like Traore if Arsenal can be persuaded to do a deal. Or is this overconfidence in the ability of some players to make the step up?

Ben, you mean he is a crock in the sense that he keeps getting niggly injuries that keep him out for long periods?? Can you say KIGHTLY!! But you would not swap him for the world!!

I don’t see the difference, both great influencial young players. If I remmenber Steve G had a lot of injury problems when he was just breaking into the Liverpool team.
