A blog for whoever

Oh Matt Mills, oh Richard Dunne, oh Roger Johnson too.

You’ll cost us so much money I wrote this blog for you, wrote this blog for you.

In an ode to a band I used to feel a bit guilty for liking, I’d like to know who you’d love to see in a Wolves shirt from the bottom of your pencil case.

Thomas would be turning in his hammock if he read a tenuous link to Beautiful South, but with absolutely nothing happening right now I thought it would be interesting to pose the following question:

If Wolves were to sign only one more player from now until the start of the season, who would you like it to be from the names we have been linked with (of which there have been many)

If we whittled it down to Bertram, Konchesky, Mills, Dunne, Johnson, Jonny Evans and Sebastien Bassong, which one would you like to have in the team at Ewood Park for the first game of the season?

Cheap, never cheap. I'll write this blog 'til you're ours to keep

Come to think of it, who would you like to see leave as well? While that elusive marquee defensive signing is consuming all of our thoughts, I’m as concerned about the stodgy air of mediocrity around the reserve team that has long been in need of shifting.

With the 25 man squad rule gaining added significance on a seemingly weekly basis, it seems equally vital to shift some deadwood if we are serious about progressing and evolving.

Personally, Berra, Keogh, Halford, Maierhofer and Vokes can now leave the club, while one of David Edwards and Nenad Milijas could follow closely behind if – for whatever reasons – they resume bit-part roles from August.

Then there is the issue of the youngsters and the best way to aid their development and finally immerse them into the first team environment. How we handle Zele Ismail will be particularly interesting, as well as the stance on Batth, Malone, Winnall, David Davis and Mendez-Laing. More loans I’d imagine.

Maybe save that subject for another time as I get back to the question in hand. One player, one more signing, who would you like it to be (from those currently being linked).

Mills looks good, please, please, please not Konchesky!

Milijas can still make an impact, as can Edwards. Berra still OK for cover unless a good offer comes in.

Maierhofer, Halford & Keogh should make way. Vokes out to the Championship again?

Bassong…just ahead of Mills…simply because he already has proven premier credentials…and that is what we so desperately need at the back. The use Stearman (with Craddock in reserve for the scheduled loss of form Stearman WILL suffer during the season!)

Got to be TWO central defenders AND a left back, can’t play these ‘If’ games. Any two of Johnson, Mills, Bassong…and Ridgewell (NOT Konchesky or Warnock).
Get rid of Berra, Halford, Keogh, Milijas & possibly Stearman (these are NOT Premiership players).

  9. Would love, LOVE, for us to get Johnson. Obviously money is a major factor, but he’s in his last year of his contract, for a relegated team, I think Birmingham know they won’t get £14m for him. He would be perfect for us, consistent, good in the air and will give us the stability at the back that we desperately need.

  10. A few for Bassong. Interesting! Quite interesting to see who he’d partner too. Louie and Sir Fred says Stears and you’re right Fred, Craddock will surely be in there at some point, if not for the opener!

Can’t see Craddock being anything but a back up, there to help the less experienced ones. But, he has proved me wrong so many time, and done an excellent job so if we was involved I would have no fears he’d do a job.

The silence is deafening from the Molyneux. If we do sign Mills why didn`t we get him from Doncaster two years ago. Why didn`t we go for Danns when he was next door at Walsall. Would have saved a lot of money.
Both players were playing then at the level Danny Baath proved himself at last season, so why on earth aren`t we running with our home grown talent, if the transfer fees and wages being demanded in the market place are beyond our budget right now.
If its the same defence that played the first half against Blackburn and let three goals in that plays when we visit Ewood Park with in August, then somone needs sacking, Moxey.

R.Johnson would be a the first choice – no doubt in my soul. Birmingham conceded as many goals as Wolves,36, but R.Johnson is their best player. Rock solid as Craddock, but faster. I would gladly pay over market price to get him. A key player for Birmingham, and surely a key player for Wolves, if Wolves bought him. I would definetly be willing to pay 8 mill for a defensive key player + players in exchange.

Secondly after R.Johnson I would favor Bassong. If I’m not wrong he is a player with pace. I’m not sure about his commanding precence as a central defender. He played a central part of Spurs way to the European champions league, but fell out of favor after Harry Redknapp took over as manager. He can also play as a left fullback.

Thirdly I would go for M.Mills. Very dominant and strong in the air. We conceded a lot of goals in the air when Stearman and Berra played together in Wolves central defence.
Some Reading results in the FA-Cup suggests he has potential to cope with premier league. Reading conceded one goal against Man City and had a clean sheet against Everton. Weaknesses: not the fastest player (that’s the impression I got after reading opinions from other wolves fans about him).

Got to agree with HershamWolf, we need 2! central defenders during the close season but I think we might only get one. If we do get two, it will be a very positive sign of intent from the 3 Ms so I hope it’s the latter.

Sorry Ben, I can’t just say one player! There are two many juices combinations of the future centre back partnership that we can potentially look forward to after a couple of years of the Wolverhampton Circus trying to defend Wayne Hennessey.

    If I win the Euro Millions this week, I’ll give Stevey M a bell and dedicate it to the defensive players that I want for us for next season. They would be;

Ryan Bertrand on loan from the Chelsk with Elokobi in reserve and the two centre backs being Johnson and Mills. I for one am a big fan of the idea of Wolves building a young, hungry and above all, British-based team(not exclusively but largely). I think that Brits just know what it means to fight for each other on the pitch. Failing that, I would plum for either Johnson or Mills and pair them up with either Bassong or Dunne.

Boys, if we get the players we all want before the start of the season, I can see this season being a very fruitful one for us! Here’s hoping!

Wants to go back to France, we can’t stop him I guess. Shame, I thought we might see the best of him with a proper pre-season.

    I hope we actually get…

    * Bassong or Johnson
    * Mills
    * Bertram

And I hope we bid farewell to…

    * Berra

I think (not sure), it’s accepted that Ward is a decent fourth choice striker to have haha! Though clive will never have it..

Bertrand would be my first choice for left back, he looks good for the u21s. His passing was excellent.

Not sure about Mills, seems rash and too slow. Is he better than say, Berra? Or enough of an improvement to buy for £4m?

m still trying to get my head round your liking for Beautiful South. I’d have put you down as more a Led Zep man myself. Proper Wolves band.

    • Martin, I genuinely thought you would be the one fan to applaud me for Beautiful South reference! Seriously! I do love Led Zep too, if that’s allowed. Zane Lowe might not like me for it mind.
Anyway, time for me to ramble on…
Good to get so many comments on this so soon. Mouyokolo looks to be headed towards the Eurostar then.
I still refer back to Thomas’ ‘changing lanes’ blog and think there might be something in that.
I could see Zubar centre half at some point, but there again, if he was good enough to play there Mick would have done so by now.
I’ve got to agree with Louie, South American and Hersham. We definitely need two defenders. Irrespective of whether we get 1 or 2 though, we desperately need a partnership to build on for the long haul. Interesting to see whio that might be.
Look at Liverpool under Dalglish with Skytel and Carragher. Dunne and Collins (a couple of years back) Even Samba and Nelson. Every successful team have a partnership with few changes. Mick needs to find one and stick to it. I just thought of Floyd Streete and Ally Robertson then…perhaps a bit better than those two!

Been trying to get back to you on this one Ben but there seems to have been some sort of communication breakdown. Fair play though you certainly managed to ramble on a bit. In fact there have been so many different names suggested, i’m feeling quite dazed and confused.
I don’t really know who we need to get in, but i do know we need a new left back. I don’t have a whole lot of love for our present incumbents. Ok big George has had good times, bad times but Mr. Ward as fast and far away as possible please. Kashmir would do me. Certainly no heartbreaker.
Yep, a good solid centre half combined with a new left back and bingo!, a footballing stairway to heaven. (You knew that one was coming didn’t you?!)

I’d happily take Evans and Johnson. I can see why we might like Mills, but I think we have made enough buys in the transfer market that havent been quite what we hoped. Berra being a perfect example, looked OK in a poor league, but with us he is too slow, cant tackle, and his passing isnt the best. We cant afford another £4million mistake. Buy know quality we dont have the cash to risk making hopeful investments.

Evans has played with the best in the league and will have been taught to defend properly, he has played in Europe and has the ability. Johnson is just a good simple no nonsense defender.

I for one would also have O’Shea as he would be full back we need and provide cover in central defence should we need it.

I can honestly see us getting one centre half, and then Mick saying we have what we need. Just a hunch!

      • Sir Fred of Cathcart says:

I agree with you Ben, one centre half and then Mick professing were ready! But am a bit worried that we are down on numbers…O’Hara was already part of the squad so I’m not counting his signing as a new arrival…USA has been replaced, but Mancienne and Mouyokolo both gone, not saying they were the most useful players last season…but they were part of the squad…and both defensive players. Add to this that we look like letting Batth go out on loan again…we remain at least two defensive players short…without raising the issue of the ability of our existing players. Even with the addition of one quality centre half I would have concerns with regards to the strength in depth of our squad defensively to cope with the rigours of the premiership season!
Total fantasy but Bassong, Johnson, Bertrand in…and I would like to see Batth loaned to a good Championship side, so that the following season he can be part of our squad in the premiership…and Mick to use Guedioura more!

  19. Clive From Houston says:

So he finally got a mention.
I thought he was being ignored because he isn’t a defender, as we all know.
He should be ignored totally, as he isn’t a Premiership footballer, at any back up level at all.
I wont mention him by name, y’all know who I’m on about!
So, who would I like to see at the back?
Well, Frank Munro comes to mind, he could still do a better job than Berra!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the whole defense needs a makeover, Berra, George, Craddock and Foley are just not up to snuff.
I agree with Louie ( can you believe it?) that Stearman is worth persevering with. I think with some good defenders around him, he can improve vastly.
Henry should be relegated to the stiffs or sold, and we should also persevere with Milijas, he has class, and I hate the thought of him going to another Prem team, and coming back to the Mol to haunt us.
Whoever MM gets in won’t get a look in as long as his favorites are still around, look at the past two seasons signings, Fletcher in particular.
I for one am still in the FOMM mode, nothing has changed as far as I’m concerned, he hasn’t suddenly learnt tactics etc in a month. All he has seen is how to demolish a stand, not an opponents defense!!

    • Robin says:

      I agree.
Am surprised some think Milijas should be sold!
Personally think, under a more imaginative manager, he’d be a much improved player.
Johnson for me, if it was one player.
But like Clive says, we need a new back four, though I’d settle for three, even two, Johnson and Mills.
They look most likely to fit into M.M.’s ‘philosophy’.

O’Hara and Milijas in the team at home with someone holding would be a sight to behold.
Realistically can’t see Mick playing Milijas much with O’Hara and so I would sell him. If we did we’d get £2-3mil I think. Otherwise he’ll be going on a free (I think he got a 3 year deal) next summer.

This post has reminded me of Playing LMA manager on the playstion, wheeling and dealing on a fantasy level, First of all im gonna presume we got 20 mill to spend with 5 going on Ohara that leaves 15. i will start by raising funds from the sale of players i dont think we need. i would sell Halford, Berra and stearman from the back, hopefully raisng 6-7 mill. I would then get rid of Keogh and Vokes raising another 1.5 mill. Finally the midfield which for me is the hardest area as all our central midfielders are on a par, with that in mind i would probably plump for Dave Edwards for 3 mill as i just cant see him forcing his way into the team. this would give us give us about 25 mill. i would then take Bassong and Johnsonn and mills for me thats roughly 19mill, i would then go get warnock from villa,

    This leaves my Team

    DEF
Bassong Johnson Mills Zubar Foley Warnock Craddock and Curious George
    MID
Henry Ohara Milijas Gueidiorra Jarvis Hunt Hamill Kightly
    ATT
    Fletcher Doyle Blake Ward

with 3 keepers thats 23 of 25 leaving a couple of spaces for loan players who i would like to see at least 1 quality central midfielder to give us cover.

Course this is all fantasy but thats how i would build my team

Only a championship side (or Scotish side for Berra) would consider moving for them so few clubs in those leagues have much cash to spend on players.

AAhhhhh! This Blog was off the air for a few minutes (maybe my post causeed it to crash as it hasn’t appeared!). So I was forced on to the sanitised site for a few minutes and read an article “Interest High” which I’d hoped would be about target signings, sadly it was a pointless piece of rubbish about MM deciding nothing about who wil go out on loan. They are really stuck for news if that’s the best they can do.

Anyway, my post referred to Richard Dunne. I hadn’t considered him until Ben mentioned him above. Is he looking to leave or being forced out of Villa? I think he sat out much of 10/11 on the bench. He’s big enough for a defender at 6’2″ and has loads of premiership experience but at 31 may be lacking pace. However, the reason he interests me is that he played a couple of blinding games for Ireland in the Euro qualifiers in May. Fantastic work rate (MM loves that!) and not afraid to put his body on the line a la John Terry when averting a couple of seemingly definite goals.
So, could be a safe bet at the right price (he should be cheap compared to the others) and should last 2-3 seasons. What’s his price anyone?

He would be a terrific signing. Complete defender with bags of experience. He has at least 3 years left in him. Unlike Mills his developing stages are behind him, he is, as a defender, at his peak, or could be if he had played regularly at A.Villa.

Watcha bloggers – and Clive, thats not very generous of you, I`ve got 4 dollars left from my recent honeymoon and i`ll chuck those in if it means we lose those two players.
Money laundering – now whats all that about then, thank goodness I`m not a Blues fan. Maybe the deafening silence from the Molyneux means a deal for Johnson is ever more likely. Maybe your five pounds and my four dollars would be of much more interest to Carsen Yeung (rhymes with bung eh?) and would help close the deal.
As a thought, why doesn`t or hasn`t MM played Ward at centre half in our clubs hour of need. Give him the No 5 shirt, that might be the only way to have Ward join that remarkably long list of centre halves/players that MM has signed over the last 5 years, then never played them, and who have been shipped out on loan or sold on. I`m mean just how difficult is it to find a big pacey, mobile centre half who can play a bit, I wonder if someone more clever than me could list the centre halves bought and fees paid out, and then funds received back in since MM became manager. I`m not taking the p**s but surely there`s something very wrong here isn`t there?!?

As a rule I don’t tend to correct spelling on the internet as I’m not a total twat, but I can’t abide you spelling Molineux with a Y mate.

Following on from your point, would you call Stearman a pacy, mobile center half who can play a bit? I’ll concede he’s not big, but he just needs more weetabix for breakfast and he’ll be halfway there at least…

    Good afternoon Sleachy.
You can tell its gone 5pm and nearly time to go home and switch the old workstation off. I can spell my friend, its just I find typing very difficult with my rugby forwards hands.
I like and rate Steramna, (see I can`t spell/type that either). Anyone who saw him give a MOM performance (with Henry) at Man Utd away last year, as I did sat amongst the home fans, would say why not play like that every week?
An England under 21 international when we signed him, and we don`t have many of those, he has the pace and ability to play the game the premiership way. Shame the red mist hits him occasionally, but as he matures lets hope he grows out of that. As for the weetabix, yes, and i`d give him a years subscription to get down the gym and bulk up a bit.
He cost enough at £1.75m or so some 4/5 years ago, and you are right, he should be one of our playing centre halves. Maybe if we only sign one new No 5, he may have to play every week. Other point is he can also play right back. Pity he`s not left footed so he could be a No 3.
For me Stears and Zubar as our paciest defenders should play every week if fit, as to why that isn`t the case please ask the manager.

Here we go again (from the E&S)…

“Wolves’ chances of signing Craig Gardner collapsed over personal terms, it has emerged.”

“With McCarthy also missing out on Gardner’s Blues’ team-mates Sebastian Larsson – who was also due to be unveiled by Sunderland today – and Roger Johnson, the Wolves boss is having to think again on his transfer wishlist.”

We’ll sign that bloke from Championship Reading and be expected to believe some guff that he was MM’s first choice. I can hear the “young and hungry” ethos b*llocks already! (replace this with “cheap and cheerful” for the truth!)

I hope I am wrong but I’m now fully prepared for another transfer window full of nothing other than disappointment!

It is hardly a couple of quid, Sunderland have received over 40 million in cash for Bent and Henderson and they are spending it right now.

Even if we went higher than our usual wages, we would have still been outdone. Sunderland at this moment, are a bigger club with a bigger stadium and currently more money to spend.

No way is he worth the wages he wanted, as much as I would have liked him to sign for us I’m not that disappointed.

Be patient, relax. We are trying to get the best deals for the right people, have faith.

Spot on Louie. We can’t compete with Sunderland. If they want a player that we want, we’ll always be spanked on wages amongst other things.

Who and what do you mean by the right people, can you name any that
may come for the money we pay in wages because i can’t. Don’t forget
they are got to be better than we have already got or else you know where
we will be at the end of the season.

What I mean, is that we are going tp spend the right money on who we believe fit our system. We aren’t going to overspend on someone who isn’t worth it, which I think is right.

              Who, we’ll see I guess.

Thats what i’m saying,we need to buy proven prem players thats why we
need to pay a bit extra to get the right man..Another question do we take a chance on untested players from here or abroad..?.Anyway who or ever
he buys lets hope its a bit better than what he bought last year,Fletcher,Hammell, excluded.

and Hunt? Did pretty well when he wasn’t injured I thought…

And that O’Hara bloke wasn’t bad for the second half of the season aswell, even with a bad back.

Come on, let’s be patient and see what happens come the start of the season or 1st September.

If you haven’t noticed, the whole league has been quite slow with transfers so far, we are righting to get the right deal for the likes of Johnson, Mills, Bassong, Konchesky, Bertrand..

All I’m going to say about this is…we better get Mills! If Leicester ends up getting him instead just because we couldn’t pitch in the extra million, then we’d have reason to be angry there…

Still hoping that we can get Bertrand as well!

There is a lovely picture in the Electronic Telegraph today.
The caption is “Clubs want to shift misfits” and the picture is of Adeybyor, hands on hips……………alongside a back view of our Carl Henry.
Although the story is about the overpaid wankers of City, Chelsea etc, it could equally apply to Henry.
Anyway, time for someone to start a new blog, Thomas, ae you back from honeymoon, and are you still walking??!!

    Seb Bassong IN

    Berra OUT

Zeli will probably end up in the Bundesliga in a couple of seasons.
Docherty has the potential to progress to 1st team in 3 seasons
    Winnal potentially in 2 seasons
    Baath in 1 seasons time
Other than that I can’t see any other potential coming from our academy of youth players in the short term.
