Ticking Over: Wolves 0 Everton 0

Well, another match unbeaten, another useful point gained and a tiny step closer to Premiership safety. Not too shabby.

Although we didn’t win the game, the roar that greeted the full time whistle demonstrated perfectly, just how important this result was to our survival cause. We’ve now gone unbeaten this season against Everton, Spurs and Villa, which is a superb achievement, given the quality of those sides.

Wolves had to defend well to earn the point

I thought it might be our day, particularly when the news filtered through that Mikel Arteta wasn’t playing. Everton have some outstanding players, but the Spanish midfielder is just that little bit classier and has the ability to unlock a defence in the blink of an eye. In fact, had he played, I’m almost certain the final scoreline would have been different.

Still, Wolves were made to work hard for this point and front to back, everyone put in a shift, to use a McCarthyism.

The back four were very good.

Jody Craddock won practically everything. Berra was shaky to begin with, but grew in confidence as the game progressed. Big George Elokobi gave his all and even delivered a couple of teasing balls into the Everton box on the rare occasion he ventured forward. I think he’s successfully wrestled that left-back slot away from Stephen Ward, at least in the short term.

Zubar was probably the best of the lot though, using his power and pace to defend flawlessly and bomb forward when the opportunity presented himself. Our two brightest moments in the game came when the Frenchman exchanged clever passes and surged into the Everton box, only to come up agonisingly short with his final ball. His improvement has been a big factor in our recent upturn in form.

In midfield, Henry and Mancienne were neat and tidy, constantly grappling for the ball and winning enough mini-battles to ensure Everton couldn’t break us down. Jones wasn’t as effective as he has been in recent matches, but still got into some good positions. His second half booking for taking a quick free kick was ridiculous, particularly when identical situations involving players in blue shirts went unpunished.

Doyle was good, but not quite up to the usual high standards he sets. He looked a little jaded to me, so it’s just as well he’s got a full week until we next play. The rest will probably do him good.

All in all though, pretty good stuff from the boys in old gold. We’ve definitely built up some momentum, so you could look at it as a shame that we have to visit the Emirates next Saturday, where defeat is a very strong possibility. However, as we are in such good shape and as Arsenal have the small matter of a Champions League tie against Barcelona in the back of their minds, what better chance will we have to cause a massive upset and in doing so, enjoy our greatest day yet?

You never know.

What the Papers Say

Mick McCarthy is ever the realist. He has seen his Wolves team – for so long struggling in intensive care – emerge with a run of eight points from four matches. But he knows they are still a long way from Premier League safety.

What Wolves lacked in attack, they made up for in defence to gain another crucial point towards safety.

According to the thoughts of Mick McCarthy, every point is a prisoner at this level and his Wolverhampton Wanderers team managed to intern another one at Molineux yesterday in their efforts to avoid relegation. Quite how they captured this particular one, their eighth in four games, may remain a mystery to Everton.

excellent summing up of the game.
surprised you didnt mention yet another poor refereeing display at molineux.
particularly confused as to when he booked jones for taking a free kick without waiting for the whistle, yet allow Everton to do the exact same thing and allowing play to carry on. consistency ? hardly. someone please explain.

Good, battling performance from the boys, shame we couldn’t have created a few more chances and tested their keeper a bit more. If you just watched the highlights, you would assume that Everton were all over us. All in all, a good point that keeps the unbeaten run going.

That booking of Jones was ridiculous, it’s just refs trying to show they’re in charge. But if you’re going to be a twat, you just ask for consistency. How was Saha not even booked for that tackle on Berra, barely ten minutes later? Crazy

Very happy with that point. Even happier to open the Sunday papers and see no mention of Wolves in the Relegation run-in segment (Burnley, Hull, West Ham and Wigan were for anyone interested). I don’t agree with that level of optimism, but things are definitely looking brighter!

Having hindsightedly (there’s a word to conjure with) watched the whole game after knowing the result, it was easy to spot the glaring deficiency we have.
Absolutely no authority in the air in the box.
This is not a criticism of the lads, I’m sure this will be rectified in the transfer window of the summer, when oodles of Crouches will be lining up to help us in a second successive year in the Prem.
We created a shit load of good chances with crosses, and had no one big enuff to take advantage, especially with Everton, who are a bunch of powder puffs in the height department.
Having said that, once again, we stopped the opposition playing their normal game, and did brill.
Yes, they had some chances, but as we know from our earlier games this season, you gotta take ‘em to score!!
Doyle was quieter than normal, and I agree with the earlier blog, he needs a well earned rest this week.
Put yer worry cap on, Arsene, we are coming to North London again, and look what we did to mighty Spurms the last time we were there!!!

A good point earned, but from what I have seen it looks like it was a lucky point given the chances Everton created.

Hull having won, and seeing how unlucky Burnley were to lose today really made me realise we are still far from safe. The two wins and two draws have put us in a great position, but away at Arsenal next weekend could mean other teams can eat into our points advantage.

Where has all the confindence I had between Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon gone? Never easy being a Wolves fan!

Too true Stourbridge. Let’s be honest, we will probably lose at the Emirates on Saturday, and Hull will probably beat Burnley, then all of a sudden, Hull’s 6 points from 2 games means they will be 2 behind us with agame in hand
Complacency is the enemy, and too much of it going on

As I said, too much complacency
If we lose at Arsenal, and then at home to Stoke, we will be back in the shite
Just because we have taken 8 points from the last 4 games, does NOT mean we will get anything at all from the next 3
No chicken counting here in sunny Brisbane

I’m not chicken counting, believe me, i just thinking we’ve put ourselves in a darn good position. All’s i’m saying is that there’s 6 teams in a worse position than us

I understand that complacency is never a good thing.. I’d be more worried if the players were complacent though, and I think there’s no chance of that with McCarthy’s Wolves. The truth is that we are very unlikely to go down and this is reflected in the mainstream media.

Wigan have trips to Man City and Fulham this week. At the weekend, Hull go to Stoke. West Ham go to Everton. Burnley host Man City. If Villa get their act together at Bolton we could be virtually as you were and still 14th.

I don’t think its complacency to point out that every single team in the league would swap their final 5 fixtures for ours. Given that we are playing the teams in positions 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 20th you could make a good case for saying we are playing the only 5 teams with nothing to play for.

    Not truth, but hope

I hope so too, but our home form hardly inspires confidence, and I cant see us getting anything at Arsenal and Fulham
