Analysing the Run-In

We’re close enough to the end of the season now to look at the remaining games, torture ourselves a little bit and make some semi-educated guesses about how many points we might end up with.

I did the same at the end of last season, got none of them right and we still ended up winning the league. That kind of shows it to be a pointless exercise, but what the hell hey?

Currently we have 24 points from 26 games.

Is Mick doing the maths?

Taking a look at the final 14 matches, guessing purely the outcome and not the goals scored / conceded, this is what I got:

Bolton (a) – 1pt
Man Utd (h) – 0pts
Burnley (a) – 1pt
Villa (a) – 0pts
West Ham (a) – 1pt
Everton (h) – 1pt
Arsenal (a) – 0pts
Stoke (h) – 3pts
Fulham (a) – 1pt
Blackburn (h) – 3pts
Portsmouth (a) – 3pts
Sunderland (h) – 1pt
===============
Total (24+15) = 39pts
===============

So, what do think. 39 points enough to stay up?

My predictions have us not winning any of the next 7 games (ouch), but putting a run together towards the end to boost our survival chances.

Of course, my impressions of these games could and probably will change as the weeks roll by, which is the beauty of being a football supporter isn’t it?

Anyway, feel free to copy, paste and leave your own predos in the comments.

By the way, I did the other relegation candidates too and the table had Pompey, Burnley and Bolton finishing south of the dreaded dotted line. You heard it here first!

I think those predictions are pretty good.

39 points will be more thanenough to stay up. I think even three wins and a couple of draw is enough. 35 is about enough.

The pressure will be on to produce the results neccesary in the last three games. I think we could win all three, or lose all three.

There is a spell where we could lose four on the run, and still stay up.

Paddy – Man U – 3 pts ??? Don’t think so. Rooney is currently popping them in for fun. As much as I love Wolves this is a game we will not win.

      • Paddytheflea says:

We did win against ManU hthe last time we were int he PL, Salisbury. Rooney can not continue to pop them in like this. And we are in a great form at the moment as well.

        • AnotherSalisburyWolf says:

Yeah we did beat them all those years ago (I was actually there). But I think that to realistically imagine we can do it again would be foolish. Yeah we are in good form, but Man U are Man U, chasing the title with Rooney firing on all 8. He will continue to fire ‘em in. I dont see him having to many problems against us.

Why so fuckin’ negative, you lot?
We are Wolves, and we are gonna win every game!!!
No, I’ve not been on the weed or suppin’ margeritas, again, just think we should be 100% positive.
Arsenal looked pedestrian against Sunderland, who themselves have imploded, Rooney cannot keep winning games single handedly for ever, Everton are on a roll, which must end somewhere, and all the others are no better than us.
So, sod being realistic, lets be positive, and think we can win ‘em all!!!
By the time the last three games come around, we will be safe.
    You heard that here firtst!!

      Like the positive thinking but…

I saw Arsenal at the molineux earlier this season – they made us look very slow/weak when they broke out in numbers.

I think we missed our chance with Man Utd when they were in poor form but we played the reserves.

Still think we will be lucky to stay up, Bullard scored an amazing goal for Hull reserves last night so he will give them a boost.

Haha. I believe you are a great optimist yourself, Stourbridge. I think it is equally hard to take three points away to Burnley as it is to take three at home to ManU. I did not dare to suggest that we will take anything home from that one.

      • Stourbridge Wolf says:

True, to be honest I looked down the list and found it hard to pick out any wins! I fear the worst every week we play in the Prem, set out with the attitude ‘just enjoy it’ but it hasn’t worked out like that at all!

Burnley are good at home, so you are probably right (but I hope I am!!!!), in fact I hope you are right about your wins, I am right about mine and Wolves end up in the Europa cup ha,ha,ha!

There will be some twists and turns along the way, it would be great to look back at these predictions at the end of the season and see which blogger knows best!

The last 5 games are going to be critical..
I predict things will look pretty bleak after 33 games but if we all stick together, no key injuries, and as long as heads haven’t dropped, I could see us overhauling a deficit in those last 5 games because they are all very winnable.

Loads of people seem to think we will beat Stoke at home! Wish I was that confident.

One of my worst ever Wolves experiences was stoke at home and the goalie got sent off so Dean Richards ended up between the sticks! Think we lost by four goals – I remember being in the Billy Wright (for some strange reason!) listening to them sing delilah. Anyone else remember this game?

How can stoke possibly survive and Wolves not – life is so unfair!

I vaguely remember that game now you mention it.

      I think it finished 4-1.

That can’t have been anymore painful than the home defeat they inflicted on us on their way to promotion a few years back.

I almost cried when Fuller ran the whole length of the pitch to smash in the last goal.

I remember that one too! Always considered Stoke as a mickey mouse team – the sad truth is they can now afford players like Beattie, Tuncay and Huth but we cant!

My predictions given the improving midfield and Doyle staying injury free.
A Bolton 1………….the hardest game left
    H Man U 0
    A Burnley 1………..early goal needed
A Aston Villa 1…….form goes out of the window
A West Ham 1……..on the up now
H Everton 1………..getting stronger every week
    A Arsenal 0
    H Stoke 1…………difficult tough side
    A Fulham 0………..out for revenge
    H Blackburn 1…….physical and dangerous
    A Portsmouth 1…..still look dangerous
H Sunderland 3…..the Molineux roar will be the difference

    24+11= 35

Seven teams all depending on the frailties and misfortunes of each other.
Never before have I been so tuned in to the results ,injuries , bookings and dismissals of other teams. What players will Bolton put out in the FA Cup this week? How will the game affect their selection and performance on Saturday?

See, just 3 wins could keep us up, providing we could nick a few draws. Just have a feeling we could get a point at Villa.

Pompey are gone, Bolton and Burnley are awful – throw in the pot Hull, Sunderland, Wigan and West Ham and realistically 35 points could be more than enough to stay up. All the above teams have difficult games and on current form Burnley Bolton and Hull may struggle to get another 10 points!
6 points from our next 3 games would give us a huge psychological boost over the fodder in the bottom 3.

For me i would love to see Hull and Bolton fall with Pompey – Hull because I hate the tango man, and Bolton just so Burnley can laugh at Coyle!

    • Stourbridge Wolf says:

      Totally!

I’d love the tango man to fall, and then Wolves to buy Hunt and Bullard on the cheap!

Hate Bolton for all the play off wins they have had over us, and McGinley for punching David Kelly in the face and then scoring – unlike the Murphy’s I am bitter!

It would be great for Sunderland to go too – all the money they’ve spent and Steve Bruce there too. How come no one is calling for his head yet?

Pompey, Burnley and Bolton to go down. The orange with the bluetooth will stay up. I honestly think we’ve shown enough in the last few games to stay up, and above all the other contenders. We’ll definitely stay above the 3 and Hull… and fingers crossed for a couple more!

36 will be enough to stay up this season, but to rely on 9 points from the last 3 games is crazy. We would go to pieces like we always do.Also, 3 points at Pompey is hardly a given as we lost at home to them. They are all tough games , and it will go down to the last day

Portsmouth are now filling in the papers to go into administration on Friday – hoooraaar! One down two to go!

Am I right in thinking they only lose 9 points if they are out of the bottom three? And if they are relegated anyway the deduction happens next year in the fizzy pop league? (like Southampton?). Someone said it could be as much as 20 points deducted like Luton?

At leat the fans can remember their FA cup victory when the trudge up to Fratton Park in 18 months time to watch them play the mighty Yeovil! I can hear the cow bells echoing around a half empty stadium already!

Feel sorry for the fans – but when you hear they signed two players in the summer that Wolves wanted (due to higher wages) I actually think “sod ‘em”! Also interesting to see Rednap (the bloke who spent most of the money) on the TV saying he “doesn’t understand it” and “it was ok when I was there” – when his telltale tick suggests otherwise. Pull the other one Harry its got your dodgy tax return on it! Bet you clocked up your fair share of scooby snacks on those transfers!

Anyone fancy a cut price Dindane or O’Hara. Aparently you get a free Daniel Lloyd thrown into the edal with the latter – not had a serious WAG at the Wolves for years!
