Wolves Vs Bristol City Preview

Nuno made two good points in his post match analysis on Saturday.

Firstly, when Millwall started to show more attacking intent, we should have done better at exposing the gaps they left at the back.

We picked through Derby at will when they came after us a few weeks ago but seemed much slower to transfer the ball forward at the weekend.

His second point was that when they went down to 10 men they were less inclined to get forward, which ultimately made it tougher to find those spaces.

I’d agree with this. They remained very compact and sat deep after the sending off. Still, we should have asked more questions and found a way to kill the game.

Bristol City

Looking through their results so far, it’s been a solid enough start for Lee Johnson’s team.

A late winner at Reading on Saturday (a notable scalp) moved them just outside the play-off places and like Wolves, they’ve only lost once in their 6 games to date.

In addition they upset Watford in the League Cup and enjoyed the ‘perfect’ transfer window according to the manager, so shouldn’t be underestimated.

Big money was spent on striker Famara Diedhiou and he looks a handful. Equally, academy graduate Bobby Reid has started the season well and with 5 goals already is another to watch.

Defender Aden Flint seemed destined to leave with lots of Championship interest in the tall center back, but he remains and got the winner at the Madejski. He’s dangerous from set pieces and scored at Molineux last season.

I believe I’m correct in saying City haven’t won away at Wolves since 1931 so there’s no arguing they’re due.

Wolves

It was a shock to see Ben Marshall inserted straight back into the side with Bright Enobakhare and Ivan Cavaleiro overlooked.

That’s a real show of faith from the coach for a player who didn’t feature in pre-season and I thought Marshall looked zippy enough in his hour.

Maybe it was part of Nuno’s master plan to rotate both Cav and Bright into the team for this one?

I seem to be in the minority who think Bonatini is doing a decent job up front, but we do need to test alternative ideas.

It’s a big ask to play Bright up front on his own, but he’s got the strength to hold the ball and bring others into play so why not?

Predictions

I don’t think, albeit on limited knowledge, that Bristol City have enough in their squad or team to trouble the top six.

It’s easy to be proven wrong in this division of course and they’ve yet to face any of the early pacesetters so this is a good benchmark for them.

For us, we’ve got to be looking for another victory to keep up with what look like very good Cardiff and Leeds teams. I think we’ll get it.

3-1.

Up The Wolves!

Agree that Leo is doing well, he’s got the strength, movement and link-up play of a decent forward. If he’d shot with a bit more aggression on Sat he would’ve got on the scoresheet (credit should also go to the Milwall keeper).

Bright wasn’t great when he came off the bench so he needs to prove himself tonight.

Bristol aint a bad side, and whenever I’ve predicted a loss this season we’ve won so…

Agreed Bonatini looks a good player. With the way the team plays it is unlikely that any striker would get 20 goals in a season. He was unlucky not to get a couple on Saturday. He will get one on Tuesday evening along with Neves.

I agree with regards to Bonatini I think he’s doing a good job up top, he just needs to be a bit more clinical in front of goal. Jota is fast becoming my favourite player, the kid is brilliant! To think Costa is to get back in and link up with Neves, bonatini, jota, caviliero and the rest is exciting I don’t think we’ll be short of goals. Let’s not forget this is still a new team learning and gelling together. Just because results have been good don’t think we’re the finished article, we’ll still improve. I can’t see many teams stopping us and Bristol City are no different. Bonatini and Bright to score

I agree with you Thomas about Bonatini, though a little composure, instead of volley straight at the last defender would surely have given us a 2-0 win over Millwall. Have to disagree I’m afraid about Bright – he is far from the finished article I know, but far too often runs up blind alleys instead of passing. When playing on pure instinct he is skilful, when given time to think he isn’t Bright. Give me Cav or even Zyro anyday, though when Helder comes back he is obviously a shoe-in. Am I alone in thinking that Jordan should never have been loaned out?
I will be there for Bristol tomorrow night, but am then away in N.India till the end of the month with uncertain wifi connection, so Thomas if you can do me the honour of filling in my predictions until then I would be eternally grateful:
    Sat 16th Forest 1 WWFC 2
    Sat 23rd WWFC 3 Barnsley 0
    Tue 26th Sheffield 1 WWFC 3
    Sat 30th Burton 0 WWFC 3
and of course a hammering of the other Bristol by the reserves in the Caribou (sic) cup!

I appreciate the “feel good” factor Wolves fans have at the present and rightly so, but I would suggest your forecast of a 3-1 win is highly unlikely. Bristol City have the strongest squad in years, and could arguably put two full teams out that could challenge in the championship. With wins at the end of last season against Brighton away and a pasting of Huddersfield at home, along with their form so far this season, they could definitely challenge for a top six place.
    Underestimate them at your peril!

    More likely a score draw.

Torn between a 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw. Think Bristol City are a good side and could be a real dark horse this season.

Shame if Boly not fit enough as though Batth did well on Saturday we all know he can be a liability.

Wing backs – maybe Douglas in for Vinagre purely for resting purposes as the games come thick and fast now. Also should we bring Iorfa back from Ipswich in view of Ofusu-Ayeh’s surgery as we have no cover for Doherty. Marshall maybe I know.

In attack I’d stick with Bonatini up top but would definitely start Cavaleiro in place of Marshall.

Hope for a good win to maintain our 2+ points per game record.

Will be following matters as best I can via Croatian wifi and looking forward to going to the Forest match on Saturday.

That said they are well funded nowadays and have clearly gotten off to a good start, brissle that is, and so don’t see a walkover coming. Another game where the result will define if we have the right points accumulator mindset for automatic promotion. Think so.

  16. I wish we had a Bully type up front, one who could be guranteed finish off the moves and even just muscle in a goal on his own: game plan: give the ball to Bull, = goal!
I think City will be tough opposition, more so than we think.
I think they have the firepower to take their chances from set pieces, a draw or them to steal it 2-1, though obviously I’m hoping for a comfy 2-0, it never is.. who would have thought we would have been biting our nails in injury time v 10 men after the way we controlled the match on Saturday?

Those were the days my friend, I thought they’d never end.
If we’re heading for the PL, we should be beating teams like Bristol and not hanging on against Millwall. I think we are gelling but this division is not a walkover.

      • I got all nostalgic for Bully recently while showing my 7 year old son my Wolves heroes on youtube…. then again after watching Bonatini get into great positions but fail to finish, and then after the match in the club shop was a Bully mug with my name on it… this is a long old season, and winning is all that counts, performances will come.. TBH I think the return of Costa will really kick start us – a bit like the Jarvo-Kites combo on either flank

In support of Bonatini, all our players are asking questions and are performing well, whoever Nuno picks now, I am more than comfortable with. Marshall played like he had’nt been away, obviously tired towards the end but gave a good account if himself.
Bonatini has slotted into the system Nuno wamts him to play, on many occassions he could have shot but chose to pass, if you look at Bright, he shoots when perhaps a sideward pass would have been a better option.
But I can’t see us slipping up in games like previous seasons, so I think it will be another win, I’m sticking my neck out that tomorrow we will click and goals will come.

That’s all very well when it’s hot but it was freezing and pissing with rain most of the time, so in the end I had to put some trousers on!

Still, Public Service Broadcasting, Lovely Eggs, Bootleg Beatles and Flaming Lips made for a thoroughly enjoyable time in the mud.

Setting off even earlier – 3pm tomorrow due to infernal ongoing roadworks irrespective of which route we take and West Mids rush hour traffic. The roadworks between Catthorpe interchange and Junction 15 on the M1 (about 14 miles) have been ongoing for about four years. I wrote to the Highways Agency who replied “they may be finished by Christmas”. Did not expand on which Christmas mind you.
I pray that one day someone somewhere will open a direct rail route between Bedford and Wolverhampton. It would be heaven and as Bedford Wolves has 16 season ticket holders plus another 6 or 7 other regulars we would fill half a carriage!! At least! Just think three card brag and copious amounts of Boddingtons en route.

This could be the game where a greater proportion of the chances go in rather than out. Bristol look good going forward and may well get an unusual opposition goal.

It may be 80+ years since Bristol won at Molineux, but statistically the odds are just the same as if it was the first time we’ve played them – and we clearly have the edge there. Who said “There are lies, damned lies and statistics£”?? 🙂 ……. or possibly 🙁 of course.

This is a warm up, practice match for Nottingham Florists on Saturday. There are no easy games, but we have the quality to win, just need the mental approach to be right, make sure every player is up for this one, then 3 points thankyou.
Will Bright ever score I wonder, maybe tonight if he plays, fancy Cavaleiro getting another too.
So a cool 2-0 win for me, at least no squeaky bottom last fifteen minutes to spoil the enjoyment of another football show. Ever the optimist.

The weather could play a big part in tonight’s proceedings .
I think we may see a lot of high and long balls over the top from them when the wind is in their favour. This could and should be hugely to our advantage as we ALWAYS play it on the deck .
We will have to play deep which will draw them out and as Nuno said we must exploit the space they will leave. Which we will.
Thats my game plan so i predict a big win.

Watched the game v Millwall on WolvesTV. We played some decent football and looked very good at times.
It’s hard to break down sides when they have 9 men behind the ball, which I think Bristol City will do tonight.
I think they are a decent side and, like a lot of teams in this division, can produce a result.
Going for a draw but hoping I am wrong.

  71. This is going to be a tough game City are no mugs. My concern is that if we do manage to get ahead will we then go on a kill the game like we should of against Millwall its not the fact we didn’t create enough chances its the fact we were not clinical.

A draw would not be a disaster, we need to take our chances because sooner or later if we don’t we will get punished…………I hope it’s not tonight..!

OK, tonight as happens frequently we’re going to have an off night as the 2nd string take up a few more places on the team sheet. A little over confidence in the players and the stands means we’ll not be quite at it, and Bristol will use their few advantages and have one of those games that everything and the Ref run for them.

Looking forward to this one. Bristol City seem to be a footballing side so it should be an open game. I would bring back either Cav or Bright for this one and would like to see Marhsall at RWB. Doherty’s final ball can be frustrating at times. Playing it say and going for 1-0 to the Wanderers

Read a few of the posts on here (while I’m so busy) and despair that anybody would be pining for afobe’s return. I mean, he wanted to go; I don’t see why we should be the club to resurrect his dying career.

As for Amber wolf…are you Mystic Meh in disguise? Or a harbinger of doom? Made me chuckle, but i hope your premonitions are as good as here…

….. resurrect his dying career…… brilliant mate. I AGREE 100%. He was great when he was with us without question, but no-one at the club asked him to leave, that was purely his choice. He thought he was better than the club and NO-ONE is better than the club. He obviously is not as good as he thought he was as he has failed in the Premiership. We are going in to the premiership next season, so why would we want someone who can’t cut it there. Great decision to not bring him back imo.

The brutal sacking of the Crystal Palace coach shows how fine a line there is in coaching. Palace were all over Burnley and deserved something. Nuno also favours the same intricate passing style. It’s not enough to simply spend pots of money on players and play attractive football; that doesn’t guarantee success. Thankfully we have got off to a splendid start but we have to be grateful that Nuno took a chance on us when it could so easily backfire on him.

I’m afraid it was another case of referee incompetence. He gave a free kick to Bristol City (which wasn’t). From the free kick a cross which hit the arm rather than the other way round and he gives a penalty. Wrong again. A few minutes later Danny Batth is flattened in their box. And I mean totally cleaned out. Guess what? No penalty. We had enough chances to win two games. Got to say it was a bloody good game and fair play to Brizzle who certainly did not come to defend. Still take 14 from 7.

Thanks for your view mate. I always said that any team we play have earned the right to play in the championship so I do not EVER expect us to walk over a team regardless of who they are. The only thing I do expect is that we play in a manner that shows we want to win and play with 100% commitment. If we did that then that is good. I do believe however thati it would certainly help if we could put away the chances that we are making.

Bristol are the best team we’ve played this season by a long chalk. But a Wicked, truly wicked deflection for their first and a dirty, disgusting, scandlous excuse for a ref giving a dubious penalty stole the game from us. 8-1 could have been written into the history books tonight I shit you not.
Wolves played their best football of the season, but our inability to put it in the oinion bag is still a problem. Albeit here’s me moaning after we score 3 and refused to lie down, but when the officials are corrupt what can you do.

Outstanding game of football, can’t praise Wolves enough, again Vinagre had a belter.
No complaints, these are the cards we were dealt tonight, I’m still buzzing from the Samba footy albeit on one of those cold, windy Tuesday nights that the Portuguese can’t play in.

Roll on Saturday, FO cardiff shitty.

All I can say is the football league need to take a long look at the standard of refereeing being dished out at the Mol because most of the refs we have had are abject and totally atrocious, they give our players no protection at all, I’m all for a good game of football but some of the tackles dished out to our our continental players is abysmal it that game was in the prem the ref would’ve sent one or two of their players off,the referees job is to protect players as well to officiate the game which brings me to the penalty that never was, the linesman didn’t flag for it who was closer and had a better view imo.other than that we should’ve won by a country mile, dare I say a striker needed.

Hit the bar & no pen for Bathh plus shit ref’s again, can’t Kenny H come out & speak about the standard of ref at the Mol?
14 from 7 is great but we’ve dropped points so far, if we’re serious about top two we have to put this right.
A return to winning way at Forest will keep the 2 + points average going.

Gents as a Bristol City fan I have to admit that we were lucky to take a point from you. That’s football as you all know. There are always games when you deserve the points but just do not get them. Having said that, it was a good game and I wish you well for the season. You played some good football (your right winger was dynamite) and I expect you to do well this season. I’m pleased with the way City fought back and disagree with your poor assessment of the refereeing decisions. Refs are always poor when the decisions go against you. My only criticism of your side were how they whinged and wined at every decision that went against you. Refs are used to that…..just get on with it. There were certainly no favors gleaned there. My earlier prediction was a draw….and it was a draw. That is 4 points from 2 away games for us…..See you at Ashton gate later in the season. Brace yerselves! You will not dominate on our home turf!

    Andrew,

I read your earlier post and it made me smile, It is nice when other fans take the time and trouble to come on the blog and share their views, obviously we will disagree, but your views are as welcome as anyone elses’s.

You team are the best team we have played at Molineux this year without a shadow of doubt and I expect your team to hold their own this season, I genuinely do hope you do well and we are both knocking on the door come May next year.

This was the best game of footy Iv’e seen at Molineux for many a year, your guys gave as good as they got, no complaints, and you are right, we do have some whinging, wining players who do have to get used to this style of play.

Referees cut both ways for teams, but I do disagree that “that’s the way it is” in this league. Why,? Why should any team, not just our have to put up with Piss poor refereeing, he destroyed what was a fabulous game of footy between two teams that could have given even more on the night had the officials been of a better standard.

Don’t accept that dross mate, your team are good, but could be better with officials that know WTF they are doing, I go to watch good footy and came away content that on the night we did all we could to win the game on that night, yes we could have defended better but the footy was good and very enjoyable.

Thanks for taking the time to come on here and share your views, your’e always going to be welcome on here.

Good luck for the season mate. Great game of footy.
