Wolves Vs Rotherham United Preview

We have to win this game.

That means starting fast, getting on the front foot early, getting ahead and seeing it through with confidence.

Our League One bound opponents need to feel smothered from the first minute, completely inferior, given no hope and ruthlessly dispatched.

This and only this will give Molineux confidence we’re not going to slip down to the third tier again ourselves.

Failing that, a scrappy one nil will do.

Rotherham

Rotherham are bad, I mean really bad. Think how awful our season has been and we’ve more than doubled their points tally.

81 goals conceded already, which is at least 30 more than anyone else with a half decent defence. Wolves have only let in 46.

They’re hardly rattling them in at the other end either. 32 goals scored makes them the second limpest attack in the division with only Wigan (31) worse off.

Their away record reads played 18, drawn 1, lost 17, scored 12, conceded 52. Nothing else needs to be said.

After Alan Stubbs was sacked and Kenny Jackett decided he didn’t fancy it after just a few weeks in charge, Paul Warne has the unenviable job of seeing out the season.

Wolves

Paul Lambert took some abuse for his team selection on Tuesday, but collecting that point, which could easily have been three, was important to stop the slide. But now he has to go for it.

I commented on the previous thread that I feel much of our problem stems from the fact we don’t get enough match winners onto the pitch.

Costa, Cavaleiro and Enobakhare all have the individual talent to win us this game and should all start. I’ve gone for Price and Saiss holding but either could easily be replaced by Edwards to give us more thrust.

I’d play two attacking full backs, moving Marshall back there if he’s coming into form and bring Williamson straight back into the fold.

You can’t say for definite that any team would win, but I do know the above eleven would create a lot of chances against a team who seemingly can’t defend.

Paul Lambert

Predictions

3-1 Wolves.

It’s one of those matches where I can’t bear the thought of not winning so I’m shutting my eyes and hoping for the best.

I hope Paul Lambert is brave in his team selection and picks an attacking lineup. If we try to make the game tight and cagey, I think that’s playing more into their hands.

We’ve got the creative, attacking players at our disposal to really go after Rotherham so I hope he is wise enough to use them.

Up The Wolves!

If we dont win this by a cricket score then each and every member of the club needs to be given a ceremonial sword and commit hari kari.
Absolutely no excuses for not winning this one emphatically
Play a keeper and 10 forwards
    Marmalize them
    Blot out their sun

I’m not raising my Big Win hopes because we am Wolves …and what we’d all like never seems to materialise on the pitch.

If we cannot take 3 points from Div 1 bound Rotherham then were in a sticky situation ourselves.

In my view playing Saville on the fullback has been quite a success stat wise. He made a free kick that we conceded a goal on against Reading, which can happen to everybody. We didn’t concede in our last game. I have not read the same kind of critic towards Coady.

      • Bedford Wolf says:

KJK – Saville at left back might look okay on paper but trust me, as someone who was at both games, on grass it is a different matter! At Reading he was pulled all over the place, inside and out and gave away more than one silly and needless free kick. At Ipswich – well to be honest Ipswich were so atrocious that I dare say me or you could have filled in at left back and we’d have still kept a clean sheet. Coady at right back does ok, Saville at left back is a joke without a punchline.

It just wouldn’t be Wolves if it was all comfortable and a cruise to a routine win. Probably 2-0 up and Rotherham get a scrappy goal in the 85th minute. Suddenly it is panic stations as Rotherham transform in to Barcelona and as much as we hoof the ball away in to Row Z it keeps coming back. Bollocks 5 minutes of injury time and we are all shitting ourselves imploring the referee ‘blow the fucking whistle you bastard’ . Counting down the seconds and a free kick to Rotherham bounces away for a goal kick. The whistle goes. Thank you Lord. Thank you. Alternatively we suddenly click and savage them 5-0 and all go home happy. Scenario 2 please but being Wolves scenario 1 is much more likely. Think i’m just gonna get pissed…..

I know who I wouldn’t play and that would probably be the same players most on this Blogg think should not be playing but if hose players are picked then Lambertt has to stand or fall by there performances and the result.

Lambertt has to make it CLEAR to the players he picks duck out of this game and you will NEVER pull on a gold shirt again.

QPR, Burton, Wigan, Blues all came with no hope, left with all three points, Rotherham 1 point gained in away games up to this Saturday, please don’t let it be Groundhog Day again. Everyone is predicting cricket scores but based on the above games, all Rotherham have to do is park the bus and we will struggle, the longer the game goes on without us scoring, the more the crowd will turn, the more determined and confident they will become. We arrived at Stoke and Liverpool as rank underdogs and I bet they were predicting cricket scores as well and we all know what happened there. Come on Wolves, treat Rotherham with respect but not fear, remember we all want you to succeed, we want you to win, we need you to win.

Just over 49 years ago Rotherham United made me cry. I was 11 and they beat us 1-0 in the FA Cup 3rd round despite heading for relegation from the 2nd division whilst we were ‘lording’ it in the 1st division.

So Saturday is payback time for me. Even though I saw us smash them 5-0 a few years back as well as the incredible 6-4 game (BOG’s Bedford Wolves flag was on the pitch at the end carried by my eldest lad Daryl – you can see it on you tube) that 1968 cup defeat still rankles.

    We will win.

We SHOULD play an attacking line-up with Costa and Cavaleiro wide, Dicko up top and Enibakhare just behind.

If we do then I don’t really care who else plays though my personal preference would be Ikeme, Iorfa, Williamson, Hause, Doherty, Saiss and Coady with Burgoyne, Stearman, Price, Edwards, Marshall, Wilson and Bodvarsson on the bench.

Aiming for the APV around 1pm and looking forward to seeing my fellow bloggers once more.

I once said before I was schizoid about Paul Lambert.
On the one hand I hate his team selections.
I want to see Cav & Costa & Hare, but also as many point out, we need a particular type of player to get us out of this division, upwards that is, to the Premiership…
Perhaps that is Marshall, Weimann & Saville?
I think Lambert will keep us up, although why it should be a cricket score tomorrow is beyond me.
I suspect in the summer the ‘Zenga era recruits’ will be moved on for a profit, and players identified by Lambert, hopefully not Thewell, replacing them.
I can see Prince, Saiss, Cav & Costa moving on.
    As for Rotherham?
I predict a victory, which probably means we will lose!

Nothing this squad and manager does surprises any more and a loss is not beyond them. We can’t score and we don’t even know who our defenders are …

That said I think Rotherham are probably the only worse side than us at defending and having nothing to lose they will probably go for it, so I expect goals … 2-1 Wolves

I think that most of us believe that PL couldn’t survive 8 losses on the bounce!
But thus far it is 1 draw out of 7 i.e 6 fekin losses to some really shite teams.
Is PL still safe if its only 1 x draw in the 8 games…..?
So why should we win 4:0 or so….
For us to score 4 will match the goals scored against Fulham but with Costa “tired”, Cav “just returning” Strikers not scoring – really 4:0 – & nil goals against – well I think based on the amount of “good displays in recent weeks”, I’m not going to back a clean sheet.
Plus the opposition is 18 away games 1 x draw + 17 x losses – whats the likely outcome in this one?????
I really do lurv the old gold & black, I’ll be at the Mol for every game to the season end (less Uddersfelt due to the rearranged rearranged game and already booking hols to suit the fixture list at home DERRRRRR) I be back next year too, but 4:0
No idea what team will be out.
      Saville in goal? could be……
This game DEMANDS pride, passion, determination, selflessness, quality, effort, strength, a plan A, a plan B and FFS a WIN

  28. Will they come and park the bus? Or will they, with the pressure to stay up now lifted, play with the freedom and fluency we can only show in the Cup? Or will they, after so many disappointments, turn up hopeful but become resigned to defeat if things begin to go badly?
We’re rubbish against teams that just try not to concede and I fear that’s what we’ll be up against. So what we need, more than anything else, is an early goal to make the bus option a pointless exercise. If we get that, we could get a hatful. If we don’t it could turn into a long and tortuous afternoon.
I like your team, Thomas, but I’d probably put Eddo in for Price ’cause we need goals and he’s proved repeatedly this season he can score them.
Should be in the APV for a pre-match sweetener. Nice to see a few of you guys there, especially Brompto’.

This is our make or break game. We go into this game, on form, in 23rd position with only Rotherham worse than us in 24th position.
We have, in the last two league games, shown an improvement but have only 1 point to show for it.
Too many times in the past have teams come to the Mol on poor runs only to win or draw. I am nervous about this game and rightly so based on the aforementioned observations.

Thomas, I like the look of your team though I suspect it will be Iorfa at right back and Doc at left, also Edwards behind Dicko/Bod. However we know that PL often makes changes that raise an eyebrow or two.

I think we will edge this game though it will be close, probably 1-0 or 2-1.

Looking forward to coming up to Wolves for this and meeting up pre-match at APV.

I’m somewhat nervous about the game itself: Rotherham will be up for it and will sense blood. They also bring a returning player in the shape of Anthony Forde. An early goal from Wolves will be good to calm things down.

By all accounts the defence did ok at Ipswich but it will be good to have Williamson back. I’m not sure how fit Cavaleiro is after his lay-off but hopefully he can complement Costa on the other wing. I would also like to see Enobakhare start but I’m wondering if PL has decided to sideline the youngsters and rely on the old heads (not that that has been a roaring success so far).

I’m hoping not to be squirming uncomfortably in my seat in the second half, but we’ll see how it all pans out tomorrow.

Whilst this is a game we should win, its not a must win – there is still a lot of football to be played after this one; and even if we do win theres still a need for quite a few more points. So I hope Molineux doesn’t display a sign of nerves which so easily transmits itself to the team – just get behind them. I can’t see Rotherham parking the bus – they need more than a point from this one, so we should have space in which to operate and class should tell.

Only having been to half a dozen games this year (2 under Walt, 4 under PL), I bow to more regular attendees views, but I do feel tomorrow is a “win/win” situation.
Win the game (and I think we will), then we remain in with a chance of staying up. Lose (or draw), and likelihood is were in the bottom 3 by 5.00pm, and I’m pretty sure that PL is done for. If so, my choice to replace him would be Gary Rowett, who seems to be waiting for a “Big Job” to come along. He’d still have a dozen games to save us, but if he didn’t, nobody would blame him, and he’d have the full pre-season to plot our escape from Div 3………again.

Such a fine line between feeling like we are back among the aristocracy at Anfield and feeling like we are stinking out a cesspit after losing to Wigan. The deflected shot, the ball that crossed the line but not given, the lapse of concentration on a free-kick. As with most games in the last x years we seem to pllace our destiny in the hands of fate rather than get the job done and put us out of our misery. I know I’m paranoid but we seem to do that more than any other team I know. Game management has absolutely no place in the wolves culture, hence my decreased life expectancy the b#st#rds. So what of tomorrow’s game with the gods. To quote Dirty Harry do we punks feel lucky? Well after much deliberation and considering the pluses and minuses of recent experience YES I think we are due just a bit of good fortune. But then again that could be the paersecution complex kicking in. I’m surprised the blog subscribers haven’t got more phobias and schisms than Woody Allen. Hope your not in to much trouble Matt, Newton was a great football player for us. If you make it to the North Bank Bar hopefully you will like Chinese birthday cake and candles. Roll on Saturday.

IMO Lambert has put a huge amount of pressure on the team, by not going for the win in the last half hour against Ipswich.
By his own admission this is a must win.
As others have said if we can’t beat Rotherham we don’t deserve to stay up.
I hope we don’t bottle it and that we really go for it from the off.

I wonder if PL will have the strength to rest Dave Edwards. I would love to see how the team actually goes without him.

2 or more up front and go for it – playing safe only leads to problems. 85th minute 0-0 and we will find a way to lose.

You’re right Mosman, although Edwards is supposed to be Mr Reliable, I’d prefer someone who can trap the ball, look up, and make an incisive pass, or even go past a player a two with the ball close to his feet. Edwards is best suited to those high tempo games where we’re up against a better side, like Liverpool, not one where we need to control the play.

So. although my prediction form is shit, i’m going for a

Wikileakes have just announced the team, Julian Assange has confirmed these are our guys for this hi profile game against lowly Rotherham.

Only in Lamberts world could this happen….
    Ikeme,
    Coady Hause Williamson SAVIILLE
    Siasse Price
    Marshall Weinmann Costa
Plus a n other to be decided on. ( my choice would be Dicko) but it’s not my choice.

Not too shabby but we shall see……

could be a swan song for PL.

That’s far too creative a team for PL! More likely he will play

      Ikeme
      Coady Batth Stearman Saville
      Price Saiss Edwards
      Costa Bodvarsson Weimann

      Or even;

      Ikeme
      Saville Edwards Saville Saville
      Saville Edwards Saville
      Saville Edwards Saville

      It’s official Saville is Spam!

Look forward to catching up with a few of you pre-match and to see a few shots zipping past the beleaguered Rotherham keeper.

    For the record – and not sure if it’s a good thing or not – we have entertained Rotherham 13 times at Molineux in our history with a record of;

    P 13. W 9. D. 4. L. 0. F 31. A. 10

In fact they failed to even score in 6 of their last 8 visits.

Please Mr Lambert play 4231 with a front 4 of Costa, Enobakhare, Cavaleiro and Dicko.

    PLEASE!!!!!!!

Just how I thought it would be. Dreadful. But 4 points was required ipswhich rotherham and that is what we got. By the way Saville was alright today. And Marshall. The 2nd half protect what we got was a bit galling and nearly paid the price. But i guess we were owed a bit of luck. Need 2 or 3 points from brentford fulham as still flirting the bottom 3.

I know what Cheesey is saying but how low have our expectations been dragged ? Saville was alright today yab a dab a doo ! We will hardly pick up any more points playing this badly.Even if we just stay up where the hell is this going under Lambert ?

That bit of luck (their 2 yard miss) could of kept us up and kept PLs job..
The Wolves way is how we do it ..to the wire

But completely, totally, and utterly unnecessary..

I don’t think Fosun will find that performance very pleasing, 3 points or not. Surely he could have put a striker on the field. If he’d played Thomas’ team we’d have won 3 -0 or more .

  76. Lambertt has to go….simple to play such a negative way and tactics was absolutely disgracefull. The team was set up not to lose fair enough but you have also be creative and attack minded, if they had took there chances we would be in the bottom 3.

With the games coming up and Lambetts negative approach, team selections and tactics I sorry to say we are going to get beaten in most of our remaining games, today’s win is just a stay of execution because of Lambets gutless tatics.

Weres YOUR bravery………Lambertt………yes we won but lets put it in perspective 1.0 against the bottom team…..!

    Pretty desperate stuff I’m afraid.

We won but managed to make Rotherham look like a team that weren’t too bad.

And that is a damning indictment on the state of our club at the moment.

Lambert doesn’t seem to know his best 11 or what position to play them in. While he is bending over backwards to find a place for Saville the likes of Costa look confused and are just getting pushed towards the exit. Dicko who just looked like he could get back
to scoring goals is another who is now just getting messed about. Price is now misfiring cutting a sad confused figure in midfield. It looks a mess to me and i cannot really see how he is going to pull it all together again.
